Alongside my research-based practice, which occupies much of my time, I love to unwind with some digital doodling. ✂️🖥️

Since my physical collage materials are back up north, I’ve been working with scans and found online ephemera to create these digital collages. It’s a way to keep my hands and mind loose, and these playful experiments often influence my work later on.

By exploring how textures, colors, and compositions come together, I discover new combinations that I can incorporate into future projects. I thrive when I can lay everything out in front of me, curating and arranging until it feels just right.

But beyond the creative exploration, these collages remind me that design isn’t just my job—it’s also my hobby. Sometimes, I create purely for fun, with no end goal other than to maintain my mental health and keep my creative mind active. 🧠✨

Thing Centered Design Ethnography

In order to understand the behavior between objects disposed of, the interaction between things is not only between the user and the thing but the thing of things. For example, if the objects of disposal such as a contact lens container have an RFID which then can be traced, the instrument should also trace its interim period in its ‘living’ environment prior to ‘final destination’ into disposal (ie. waste bin). As with all disposal objects, there should be data at the point of ‘entrace’ into the home, and its ‘exit’ out of the home to measure the frequency of disposal and whether the rate of entrance and exits has a delta. Since this is a condensed experimentation, footage captured is largely driven by my personal experience of daily ‘habits’. The result of these habits also carries the by-product on the act of disposability or resource consumption. While the Fridge, Cabinet and Waste Bin likely good instruments to track things such as plastic disposal, the Laundry Basket would be on water consumption and energy usage for clothing.

**Using iOS motion sensor app with Photos/Video footage, I experimented with different location placements to empathize with the thing’s hypothetical POV as Collectors and Actors. The actual framework would likely involve the POV of the ‘disposed’ objects as well such as plastic containers (shampoo bottles, contact lens cases etc...)

SCENARIO 1:: Bathroom Cabinet + Waste Bin + Contact Lens Container

There are several occasions that I’ll wear contact lens: when it’s raining, when it’s too hot and my glasses would slide off my face from the sweat, when I’m doing sports... today it is super hot. Casually I have a small bin placed on the glass which is where the sensor has been placed. I also tried placing the sensor behind the cabinet so that whenever someone reaches inside and takes out something that will result in disposal it is also tracked...

SCENARIO 2:: Kitchen Waste Bin + Yogurt Container 

The Waste Bin is looking at us and not knowing what to expect... and the yogurt container is on my hand looking down at the waste bin. If the waste bin has a wallet and it only gets richer by staying empty, how would it strive to achieve its goal? I’d imagine every time I dispose of something it would be recorded. It could be a gamification of whomever at home gets the least strikes for disposing of gets rewarded?

SCENARIO 3:: Fridge + Nut Bar

While a smart fridge would know what I have in my fridge, it should also know how much ‘potential’ waste it produces. As an Actor, it should signal the disposable habit records next time whenever the family purchases something that can be refrigerated and advise on methods of reducing disposability within the food storage process.

SCENARIO 4:: Laundry Basket + Washing Machine + Clothing

Every load of laundry ranges from 14 - 40 gallons of water, and with an annual loading of over 300 loads per year... that’s nearly 12,000 gallons of water per year; while an average person consumes less than 280 gallons of water a year. There are definitely days when I find myself doing more laundry than usual, particularly on the weekend when I am exercising like a triathlon. But there are also days when I am not sure if the piece of clothing needs to be washed as frequently as it needs to be and we often wash clothes out of ‘habit’ without realizing the standards of hygiene relative to our personal health and immune system. Should our laundry machine understand our standard of dirt and be able to advise on how much longer can a piece of clothing be worn (providing that we are not disgusted by it) and how much consumption of detergents are actually needed??
