Days 43-44: If you haven’t watched Mech Cadets yet what are you doing? Go watch it! It’s amazing! It’s like a mash of pacific rim and evangelion and the mech designs are beautiful! Also, it has great diversity and a beautiful art style. These’s scribbles are my first go at designing a robo for myself. Hope to work on it more later!

editor's note I go on about the history of the shaman king media franchise for like. way too long and I'm not deleting it so. plot summary starts after the flowers anime image

it started out as a shonen adventure manga created by a mangaka named hiroyuki takei which ran from 1998 to 2004, where it somehow Ate Shit And Died, leaving the manga ending unfinished somehow (idk I wasn't there)

it got its first anime adaptation in 2001

this anime had 64 episodes and covered a complete story. hey goose but if it aired in 2001 and the manga ate shit in 2004 how did they- they didn't. they made shit up. remember kanata dying on the cross? take that extend it to cover half the story and make it FUCKING AWESOME

shaman king 2001 has this impeccable Vibe to it that I really love (the only other thing I can think of with similar impeccable Vibes is sk8). a lot of fans prefer this anime to the manga and I can't blame them it sure has its perks. it also has its downsides. which is mostly terrible dated character designs and diverging from the manga if you're not into that.

I love this show though this is what I rewatch when I want any old shaman king in my spare time

SHAMAN KING KANZENBAN MANGA

that's right- between 2008 and 2009 the entire manga was reprinted to get its "true ending", including redraws of some panels

later in 2012 BAM SHAMAN KING FLOWERS

yes there's a full mainline sequel. flowers itself ended in 2014 when the magazine it was in Ate Shit and Died. the story was continued in another manga, The Super Star, before last year the magazine publishing TSS, say it with me now,

Ate Shit and Died (yeah Takei has real bad luck with that)

and then, just a few years ago...

BAM SHAMAN KING 2021 REBOOT ANIME

finally, an anime adaptation of the kanzenban manga, true ending including... this is where I show up. finally! I needed something to watch on a long car ride in august 2021 and happened to download the first eight episodes on netflix, a decision which would have no repercussions on my life philosophies or me as a person (lies)

there are pretty mixed feelings about this anime overall (the pacing goes fucking BRRRRRRR that's for sure) but I can credit that thing with getting me into shaman king and restructuring my brain so it has a special place in my heart

(it's also what I first get people to watch when they agree to shaman king with me. you should really read kanzenban instead because it's better)

lastly there's the flowers anime airing right now

and like. soooooo many more sequel prequel and spinoff manga. and also all of takei's works (I'm planning to read ultimo soon because someone said that's where the spirit based on the vermilion bird came from and that has a common ancestor with allen sugasano so I'm going) oh shit and funkuro/funbari chronicles the mobile game that is either closed or on its way out. and so much more

I'm not going to explain every one of them because I realized you probably wanted. a plot summary. so

like I said before it's a shonen adventure manga so it follows a lot of tropes, but I think it does them pretty well and in its own way. if you read through the entire mainline manga (kanzenban, flowers, and tss) it's clear takei has a lot to say through his work and he's pretty explicit about his view of the world (shoutout to evil triangle who invented capitalism)

takei's writing and research can be kinda iffy at times and I would never say his work is for everyone but I love it to bits and it has really helped me out over the years

my personal favourite pieces of shaman king media (besides kanzenban) are:

Red Crimson (spinoff of the main sequels following an adult legacy cast, brilliant story about love and grief except for the Horrors)

& a Garden (prequel spinoff about the hanagumi witches, side characters from the first manga)

2001 anime (explained this one already)

6. What do you need to write?

Non negotiable: Music that’s making my brain go brrrrrrr at the moment. For this fic, I listened to Last Christmas by Wham! over 200 times and — more embarrassingly — Watch Me Work from the goddamn trolls movie ((I was in an energetic slump))

12. Was there a scene you wanted to include but didn’t?

Yes!! Originally I was going to actually write their first date, aka ice skating in New York. I ended up scrapping that idea in favor of having more emotional vulnerability in their other scenes (bingo, tree shopping), because the progression felt more natural. Once I added more meat to those scenes, the date felt redundant and slow.

I also planned on having grandma Leclerc tell them to “stop flirting and just go on a date or whatever young folk do these days” during the tree decorating scene, but alas. It wasn’t meant to be.

20. What is something you wish more people noticed?

Honestly, this fic was designed to be very “brain off, heart open”, so there wasn’t any sort of deep symbolism I really wanted people to catch. The thing I’m glad people caught on to was the fact that — unlike a real hallmark piece — there was no misunderstanding/miscommunication plot line.

That was entirely on purpose! It felt totally contradictory to the characterization I had for Max (earnest, blunt, no secrets) and Charles (would have common sense beat into him by grandma). So I deleted that option from the jump lol

also this has me thinking about this clip that i screen recorded and stared at like twenty million times a day while i was gone because the girl he’s standing next to is wearing an off the shoulder shirt and he has a hand on her shoulder and im drooling. i was already planning on making a separate post about these screencaps but im gonna post one here hehehe. there was nothing going on between them or whatever she’s like half his age LOL but!! i thought id post anyways and you can think about it hehe. it’s not a great angle or anything of his hand on her shoulder but still

A Thought on Overwatch/Detroit: Become Human

This has been rattling around in my brain for some time now:

Because the aims of Ramattra and DBH’s Android revolution are so similar, I’ve wondered how they would react to each other. 

(This is kind of a long post so I’m putting a break here in case you would like to scroll past lol)

If DBH was the video game in Ramattra’s world:

Would Ramattra feel seen/represented? (I imagine not, since the androids in DBH are humanoid, but I wonder if he would relate to Markus)

Overall, what would Ramattra think about DBH and its messages about humanity, if there can be common ground between androids/omnics and humans? Or if humanity should not be the end goal?

If Overwatch was the video game in DBH’s world:

How would each of the main three (Markus/Connor/Kara) feel about the way androids/omnics are represented in Overwatch?

Would Markus relate to Ramattra’s vision or think it too extreme to completely eliminate humanity?

Would they wonder why humans gave the androids/omnics in Overwatch the capability to be violent when they aren’t allowed to otherwise? Why the perhaps archaic designs?

If they existed in the same universe where the characters could interact with each other:

Would Ramattra get along with Markus? Would they bond over humanity’s lack of, well, humanity?

Would Markus (or any of the other androids) be able to convince Ramattra of the brighter points to humanity? 

I mentioned this question to my bf and he brought up the point- whose design would have come first and why: Ramattra or the Cyberlife models? I would assume Ramattra came first, but to what end? If an android/omnic is meant for battle like Ramattra is, why use more resources to make him look human rather than focus on his function? 

Would Ramattra feel resentful that his design makes it more difficult for him to function in society or would he think less of Cyberlife’s designs because they pander to human comfort? 

I don’t have any answers to these questions at this time, unfortunately but they do make my brain go brrrrrrr.

What about some of your non fandom based characters, can you tell us about how you came up with some.of them?

So I talked about my cats and the Nephilim. I also have my space fantasy characters but they've kinda.... gone into stasis. Though like, I guess I could talk about how I come up with stuff.

Like honestly, it's just that I read a lot of fantasy, scifi, myths from wherever I could find them and real life science things when I was growing up. I started making up my own stories before I learned to write on my own, but I didn't really have persistent characters and universes until I got into The Hobbit and then Lord of the Rings. I was really into vampire myths and I decided to make my own take on them and figured how they might fit into their world and stuff, and that character that I made as kind of the "representative" of that species was also my first real oc. Her name is Maringa. I got way more attached to her half-brother Solaith when I made him but they're both still super important to me.

I still work pretty much the same way but just with a bit more finesse than when I started. I find things that inspire me or that make my brain go BRRRRRRR and then I figure out how to translate that into my own work and see what tweaks I can make that still keep what I enjoyed. It might be a worldbuilding detail that shapes an interesting character background or a character archetype I want to take in a different direction or just "character design PREBBY".

I put more effort into this then I care to admit but like it's my boy so like it's warranted. Also this is basically a part of a series I'm doing where I just kinda draw personal comfort characters because like honestly what is even the point if I can't draw characters I like? Diluc being one of the newer additions to that list of characters that is slowly starting to concern me in terms of length. Super rambly description below here

Fun fact my ass hadn't even played the game yet, my friend just happened to put a tier list in a chat and like after immediately going 'eyy yo who's the one in the eye patch and blue hair?' I just immediately looked at Diluc and went "I see red floof hair, I am obligated to pet them". My ass just immediately was 'hnnnng red floof hair must touch-' and like that still fucking stands but I find that funny how that's my first thought. As you may guess he is in the romantic category (which is like where 80-90% of comfort characters go for me) but he's also in the platonic category but like very lightly because hahahah immediate infatuation with character go brrrrrrr. He just gives me big comfy uwu vibes. I don't know why I have such difficulty describing why a comfy character is a comfy character when I can literally sit there and be like "I would let this man fucking spit on me but like I also want to cuddle up to him and play with his hair and like maybe peck his cheek a little uwu" and be done with the explanation but no my brain is "oonga boonga can't explain things for shit". Also hhhhhh his voicelines actually fucking kill me like he's so fucking sweet and I love he deserves the fucking world and I'm critical tier simping- I can't like put it in words but like I am down bad. Like bad bad. Like only Kaeya and Beidou hit worse then Diluc does and even then. Beidou is literal goddess tier so like her and Diluc aren't even a fair comparison in my eyes and Kaeya is on nearly equal tier with Diluc (Kaeya's slightly higher based on his voice because like aha fixation on vocal tones and inflictions go brrrrr and like dub Kaeya is literally the most calming vocal tone to me but like it's not that big of a difference so I just say they're equal tier). His hugs are probably very fucking warm and like I'd just feel comfy and safe and all fluttery. Also like aside from me gushing uhhh I started experimenting a bit more on my art since this is newer then the last one so like I could work on it a little more. I am literally in love with this one and like I was terrified of drawing a Genshin character since the designs have like little detail on them and such but like surprisingly it wasn't as bad as anticipated though so like yayyy. Also not sure whether I'm gonna make another one of these yet mainly cause I had one lined up for Kaeya but like I don't like how it looks so I gotta redraw that shit all over again but like I know the next thing I'm drawing is gonna be Genshin related because like I have a lot of ideas for that.

Picked up a Xenom from Basphomet's Workshop entirely because of your adult toy post and even though the USPS tried their hardest to keep me from getting it (3 months in customs, thanks) it's finally here and it's SO PRETTY. Many thanks for that post. Monster mouth makes brain go brrrrrrr.

Oh, you know, you're one of those people who is a true pearl of creativity! A lot of people like to make more classic Oc's, I think it's always very nice that some people like you offer us originality to bring out traditional stuff. It's really very cool!

I think there's beauty to be found in the more "classic" characters, but I like to let my brain jump around and clutch the weirder ideas. When I was younger and getting into fandom and making characters I was told many times that my ideas where too out there or that my OCs were "Mary Sues" (I hate that term), and it took a toll on my creative process, so now that I'm older and smarter I just let my brain go brrrrrrr

Again, I feel extremely happy that people like my characters! I really do work very hard to make their designs and write their stories, and knowing the people who see and read about them like what I do is rewarding like nothing else :D

bit of a shot in the dark but have you ever read Lightning Degree? i read it over on isekaiscan, and asking because i consistently mistake mdzs fanart for lightning degree fanart sdhjdndkd. I've read the novel and love to think of scenarios with that canon in mind, but I prefer to mash the MDZS Donghua and Cql adaption designs together like play dough which is what makes my art <3
