Daughter of the Deep must be so wild from Dev’s pov especially the fight scenes at the end. I mean can you imagine your little sister and her classmates are now currently in the most advanced submarine known to man and they battle with your slightly less advanced but way newer submarine the Aronnax and just when it looks like the Aronnax might win the battle, a giant octopus shows up and crushes it. Then you fight said little sister on the Varuna and suddenly she picks up a gun and starts laughing like a madwoman and shoots you then you wake up a few hours later to find out that the entire senior class of Land Institute got wrecked by a bunch of eight graders. Oh and apparently three seniors had gotten beat up by dolphins and the very delicious food you’re eating is made from algae and was cooked by an orangutan.

I was trying to design a daughter of Neptune for my au (the currently unnamed one with Ash Tornin) when I came to the realization that she was looking a lot like Ana Dakkar from Daughter of the Deep.
Ana is the demigod daughter of Neptune and a descendant of Salacia (the Roman goddess of the sea). She was raised in San Alejandro, California (a beach town just north of Santa Barbara) with her stepfather (a son of Mars) and older half-brother, Dev. When Dev turned 13, he left to train and join the Legion up north.
While her parents had already served their ten years, they were summoned by the gods on a quest to retrieve the Golden Eagle. They both died on this quest. With nowhere else to go (and heading off soon anyways), a twelve year old Ana made her way northward. Several months later, she would join the 5th cohort on account of a lack of combat skill and her father being generally seen as less important.
When he was 17 (the same year Ana would finally arrive at New Rome), Dev was elected praedor. Little did anyone know; he was a traitor working for Saturn and the Titans. He would die two years later in the final battle on Mount Othrys, where Jason would supersede him.
While Ana isn't the best when it comes to combat, she is an excellent tracker, scout, seaman, and communicator. She is able to speak several languages including (but not limited to) English, Latin, and Bundeli, as well as knowing sign language.
Powers wise, she is an incredible swimmer, can breathe underwater, and understand with sea creatures. Hypothetically, she can also generate earthquakes but is reluctant to do so due to the abundance of fault lines in California. She's only tried it once and is.... unwilling to do so again.
#Much like the Greek Trio the Roman Trio get along like siblings#They are the closer with each other than they are with anyone else#Ana is the leader of New Rome's Naval Forces#... and the only member#She can understand whale songs :)#riordanverse#percy jackson#heroes of olympus#daughter of the deep#ana dakkar#new rome#Roman series ideas

August’s book review will be another one of Rick Riordan’s books, Daughter of the Deep, will be posted on the TiaReadsTween website on August 15th.

Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a five-year high school that graduates the best marine scientists, naval warriors, navigators, and underwater explorers in the world. Ana's parents died while on a scientific expedition two years ago, and the only family she's got left is her older brother, Dev, also a student at HP. Ana's freshman year culminates with the class's weekend trial at sea, the details of which have been kept secret. She only hopes she has what it'll take to succeed. All her worries are blown out of the water when, on the bus ride to the ship, Ana and her schoolmates witness a terrible tragedy that will change the trajectory of their lives.
But wait, there's more. The professor accompanying them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and Harding-Pencroft have been fighting a cold war for a hundred and fifty years. Now that cold war has been turned up to a full broil, and the freshmen are in danger of becoming fish food. In a race against deadly enemies, Ana will make amazing friends and astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.

So I just finished Daughter Of The deep and I must say that Ana Dakkar is propably one of the best protagonists that Rick has written. I really love her.
It's sad how underrated this book is. It has so many good relationships and it focuses on platonic ones!!! And the scenes with Ana and Dev are so so freaking good, my gods!!
#Daughter Of The deep#Dotd#Ana Dakkar#Dev dakkar#rick riordan#Riordanverse#Please read it#Its really good#And the friendships are so fun#Ana Nelisha and Ester are a really good and fun trio#And the growth between Ana and Gemini is just.... Yes amazing

dreamyourselfbackagain:
“ people like me don’t get to have peace. ” (Dev for Hans)
Hans sighed softly, rolling over onto his stomach, “peace is overrated” least that was what he believed. Not that he had ever known peace, but then he supposed it just came from being around his family too long… his real family, or original family? He wasn’t really sure which was right. Besides, after the so called Great War, he wasn’t really all that sure he believed in peace. “What do you mean people like you? You want to be a lawyer fighting for what’s right don’t you?” anything deeper… well their conversations never normally got that far.
@allxthingsxglxtter
Dev rubbed his face as he sat on the edge of the bed, realizing his offhand comment was more telling about himself than most of their conversations had been so far. Leaning back to look at Hans, he couldn’t help but smile a bit at the assumption. “Honestly it’s sweet...that you thought me that noble. I want to be a lawyer because it makes good money and is challenging. Right and wrong aren’t so...clear cut as everyone seems to think it is. And I attempted to kill my own sister and helped blow up an academy with students and teachers alike in my old life....so I suppose I should say that villains like me don’t get peace.”

thinking about the freshman year classes of harding pencroft...go on. click it ↘
each house having a few specific subskills naturally caused me to believe that the students of each house only learned those skills. however, ana mentioned learning military tactics (a skill specific to house shark) and marine biology (a skill specific to house orca), which makes me think that all skills are taught to all students, without limiting what a student from each house can learn. i really like this because it contributes to the concept that no house is better than another and all of them are vital to harding pencroft.
so, i think that each freshman takes a general class for each of the three houses that they aren't in, listed below:
marine communications: a general class representing the skills of house dolphin*
military tactics: a general class representing the skills of house shark
applied mechanics: a general class representing the skills of house cephalopod*
marine biology: a general class representing the skills of house orca
*for these classes, i took some of the terms used to describe the skillset of the house to make up a class name.
basically, a student from house dolphin like ana would take military tactics, applied mechanics, and marine biology because those are the houses they're not in.
that covers three periods of their schedule, but what about their house? each house has a specific skillset, as i mentioned above, and the main skills are listed below.
house dolphin: communications, exploration, cryptography, counterintelligence*
house shark: command, combat, weapons systems, logistics
house cephalopod: engineering, applied mechanics, innovation, defensive systems
house orca: medicine, psychology, education, marine biology, communal memory
*some of the other skills mentioned in the book for this house were navigation and counterespionage.
what i'm thinking, is that, for their fourth period, a student can choose one of the skills from their house to focus on. they can go anywhere in the school (besides the gold-level areas) to study and learn. the library is endless, the machine rooms are available, and the aquariums are always open. they can even consult teachers for help. however, most of this class is self-guided, to focus on what the student wants to do.
if they don't feel content with the skill they've chosen, they can switch. they can also choose to focus on multiple skills from their house if they feel comfortable taking it on. additionally, if a student wants to graduate from two houses (their main house and an honorary house) like ophelia, they can use half the time to focus on their chosen skill from their main house, and their chosen skill from their honorary house.
the fourth period goes with the fifth period. the fifth period is basically the team regroup. the five students from each house come together, and led by the house prefect, do some sort of team building activity. for example, the freshman class of house dolphin might spend their time together solving a set of riddles in different forms of marine communication, while the freshman class of house cephalopod work to design a hypothetical device that solves a real-world problem. this is a way for the students work with others from their house after a self-guided period and display the skill they've examined in their personal study.
besides all of this, students are also obligated to take some other classes, such as theoretical marine science, and physical fitness. i'd assume there would be rotations, so they wouldn't have to take a class like physical fitness everyday.
for sophmores and above, i think classes would probably be in a similar format. i don't know much about the gold-level classes/areas, so i can't really predict how they would be incorporated.
in conclusion, that's what i think the freshman classes would look like at harding pencroft. feel free to share your thoughts!

Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

Daughter of the Deep is a fantastical book. Just when you thought Uncle Rick was done with writing books, he comes up with another bestseller filled with adventure and diverse characters. Daughter of the Deep is a retelling of the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by the French novelist Jules Verne. A fresh take on the classic novel filled with fun, adventure and pages smattered with marine biology is what this book is.
"The impossible is merely the possible for which we don't yet know the science"
The main character, Ana Dakkar is a South Asian, hailing from Bundelkhand, which means a lot to me, considering the fact that this is the first english book that I have read that stars an Indian character. This book features the classic writing style of Uncle Rick- a diverse set of characters, from those who are autistic to those who are Brazilian, an adventure that leaves you immersed and engrossed in the story and a splash of culture here and there, and that is only the least of it.
I finished this book in two days, and I desperately wanted it to last longer so that I could stay with Ana on the ship Nautilus for a little while longer. I could heap lots of praises on this book because it deserves it and then some.
For someone who enjoys Riordan's writing, or someone who wants to get started with his books, or is looking for a retelling based on a Jules Verne book, or is looking for a refreshing read that will warm your heart- you need not look further.
Rating: ★★★★★(5/5)

daughter of the deep is actually honestly truly one of rick’s best works. not really plot-wise (i’m still more partial to the greek/norse/egyptian works because i’ve spent more time w them 😔) but i mean more in terms of characters and their relationships. like first of all i LOVE that ana and gem were actually friends at the end??? there wasn’t much romance hinted btwn the two?? and like rick is known for his pairing of people so i found this amazing. BUT ALSO ANA AND DEV. i was IN LOVE w dev because of his antagonist arc. he reminded me so much of luke castellan because both of them thought they were doing their loved ones better by joining the “dark” side (for lack of better words) because they felt the side they were on was only failing them. but ana and devs relationship as siblings was just so good because you could FEEL her betrayal and how much she lost hope in him. anyway this was by far one of rick’s best works when you look at it in terms of characters & their relationships
#i can’t speak so much on the diversity although there was a lot of it !!#obvs a lot of diversity doesn’t mean it’s good rep#i didn’t find too many issues w dev & ana tbh like i didn’t see too many stereotypes of desi people#i can’t speak for gems rep cuz he’s black and i’m not but there were some parts that i was a little 🤔#daughter of the deep#rick riordan#ana dakkar#dev dakkar
