Rise & Devil Theory theories

ONCE MORE the BRC brain rot takes hold on this fine Thursday evening. This time thinking about the connection between Rise and Devil Theory!!

Why would there be a connection between her and them? Think about it: Devil Theory are known in-game for being aggressive assholes, even turning on their fellow writers by snitching on them to the cops. Not to mention the whole “were apparently working with/for Faux behind everyone’s backs” thing.

So then how the hell would Rise be able to apparently have free reign of Pyramid Island, Devil Theory’s own home turf, when DT themselves have been shown to be jerks to other writers? Especially other writers trying to move in on their turf, as seen in the game when the player starts going after them!

She was even blocking off most of the island until BRC got more REP. Ultimately trying to stop them like that would moreso benefit Devil Theory than Rise herself in the grand scheme of things.

AND SO, I present to you, a list of theories about the possible connections between Rise and Devil Theory, about how/why DT would make an exception for Rise! This is gonna be long, sorry, though at least it's not nearly as long as the two headcanon posts I did for Devil Theory and DOT EXE.

Getting this out of the way, the possibility that Rise has no connection to Devil Theory at all. I still think they wouldn’t take too kindly to another writer moving around freely on their turf, even if she didn’t do any graffiti. So then in this case, maybe she somehow sneaks around and never gets noticed by them most of the time. But then that makes the gate guarding risky from her point of view. Though it’s also a bit funny with how she’s just out in the open after that, in a spot where one of the Devil Theory guys can challenge you anyways, so surely he would’ve seen her then, lol

Rise seems to make a big deal about social media, given she has you take pics of her for her missions. I imagine she’s likely a very big name online, so then maybe at least some of the Devil Theory members are fans of hers! They have an agreement, Rise can hang out on the island for “exclusive photos” and stuff, as long as she doesn’t do any graffiti herself. Of course, nothing about her getting other people to do graffiti for her (at least, in a way), given how she gets BRC to up their Rep before letting them into the rest of the island :P (This one is my personal headcanon btw!!)

The Devil Theory guys all have crushes on her (probably stemming from her social media status maybe??), and basically letting her on the island as a chance to ask her out. Resulting in them competing with each other over it. Rise is actually fully aware of this… and just messes with them, so she can still be on the island without having to commit to anything.

Alternatively, they are her simps and she basically pushes them around, which is how she’s “allowed” on the island, she outright bullied them for it. Maybe they’re into that too, don’t judge them for it, lmao

Maybe the most potential for drama? Kinda? But one of the Devil Theory guys could actually be dating her, which explains why she’s being made an exception for being allowed on the island without getting harassed by the others.

An extension to the previous point, it’s a polycule! All the Devil Theory guys are actually dating each other and Rise is in on it too.

Just plain friendship is also an option of course! Maybe Rise and the Devi Theory guys go way back, and they just let her on the island as a favor, as long as she stays out of their way in terms of writer stuff.

Another option: Rise kicked all of their asses in a 1 on 4 fight, so they let her on the island out of respect to her. Probably-maybe the coolest option, tbh :D

Sort of a small subsection that can be applied to all of these: How does Rise chose to deal with Devil Theory being assholes, especially the whole “snitching to the cops” thing? There’s a few possibilities to consider:

First option: She actually didn’t know it was for real. She knows their reputation and the rumors, but she didn’t think it was actually true. In the game, talking to Tryce just before going to the island, he mentions that it’s a “rumor” that they snitch to the cops. So that only gets proven once you try to go after them yourself. Then in this case she breaks off from (or breaks up with) them, after learning the truth. Big potential for dramatic fic writing here! And character development in the aftermath at least on Devil Theory’s side of things, but maybe that’s just my own preference...

Second option: She definitely knew the truth, but turned a blind eye because it at least wasn’t affecting her directly. “Not my monkeys, not my circus” as they say. Not to mention, she probably had it in the back of her mind that her trying to say anything or convincing them to quit it could risk them snitching on her to the cops. In this case I imagine there’s at least some guilt on Rise’s part for not doing something sooner herself.

Third option, and I think the most exciting for both dramatic fic writing and potential character development on both sides: She absolutely knew what was going on the whole time, and even had them call the cops to help her out more than once!! If the truth ever got out on that, you can imagine her social media status would take a BIG hit… but again, excellent potential for character development for both Rise and Devil Theory in this situation, both of them learning to be better from this, at least imo ;u;

Took a bit to think about this! It's a good question

Osiris

Surface level fear: being trapped. Not claustrophobia, because he's fine with small spaces. He specifically doesn't like being in a situation where he's confined in some way: physically held, handcuffs, locked in somewhere, etc.

Deep fear: not being able to provide for his team. He may be extremely rough and has a sadistic streak, but not towards his team. Osiris fears the day that any of his boys get arrested and he can't get them out. He fears someone getting sick and not being able to get them the proper care. He fears them going hungry and cold.

Beezlebub

Surface level fear: stuff on really tall shelves. He's just got that itch that something's fall down and crack his head open. He recognizes that this completely irrational.

Deep fear: he's fairly fearless, and it takes a lot to shake him up, but he really REALLY doesn't like hospitals. Beezle hates the idea of being stuck in a sterile, depressing environment. Doctors are terrifying harbingers of pain in his eyes, and feels like the halls of hospitals are "choking with death". Everything about hospitals from the unusually eerie quiet to the reason someone would be in one just freaks him out. He definitely doesn't have a traumatic past about this (wink wink)

Pluto

Surface level fear: the Bermuda Triangle. He heard about this as a kid and just never really had that mysticism go away in his eyes. He would then say that quicksand is below that, and that Bloody Mary is below that.

Deep fear: being rejected by his team. Whether it's because they learn about his relationship with CUE.mp4, or because his more sweet nature is exposed, he's just terrified of no longer being with his friends. Pluto sees himself as not being as tough or cool as the other 3. He has nightmares about the day that the cruel nature of his teammates, especially Osirirs, turns on him.

Hades

Surface level fear: drowning. This is very ironic considering the location of their base. Yes, he does regularly fear falling off the structure into the ocean. No, he's going to tell anyone about this because he doesn't wanna be seen as wuss. Yes, the other 3 know about this despite his efforts.

Deep fear: being irrelevant/forgotten. He fears the day that gangs are truly squashed by the government and the culture dies. Hades wants to forever live on in the game of being a writer on the streets with healthy competition. Being a writer is all he has, so if the culture disappears or he's arrested or some other thing that makes it to where he can't do this anymore, Hades would genuinely not know what to live for.

New BRC AU/headcanon/fan fic idea/etc., also kind of a sequel to my "Rise and Devil Theory possible connections" post from a while back.

So in the Jet Set Radio games, there's a gang called Poison Jam. People have already pointed out a couple of similarities between them and Devil Theory, mainly design-wise. In JSR Future, they're led by Cube, who eventually joins the protags' group.

So then if we're already pointing out parallels between Poison Jam and Devil Theory, here's a neat idea: Rise being the secret leader of Devil Theory! It'd be another possibility of how she'd be allowed on Pyramid Island without getting hassled by them.

More rambling under the cut!

Now getting into a few more probable specifics about how this could work:

Though first, regardless of how she's the leader, she never reveals the truth to anyone. She's still got a reputation to maintain! Maybe Tryce or someone else on BRC figures things out and tries to accuse her, but she just replies, "That's a very dangerous accusation to make." Meanwhile whoever accuses her starts feeling like they're being watched... 😈

After DT gets kicked out of Mataan and get settled on Pyramid Island, they start getting sick of Rise as their leader. Maybe they blame her for losing to DJ Cyber (since they got kicked out of Mataan, they probably lost to FUTURISM), and getting sent to the island. So they're trying to figure out how to oust her from the crew, though Rise is aware of this and keeping an eye on them.

Alternatively, Rise is the one upset at DT for losing and getting them all shuffled onto the island. So she's looking for ways to cut her losses with them and join a whole new crew by herself.

It could also be both sides being mad at each other for the loss. :P

So either way, BRC comes along and Rise tests them. Once they impress her enough, she cuts her losses with her old crew and joins BRC!

Whether or not Rise is aware of DT's dealings with the cops could also factor into this, like what I mentioned at the end of that other post. She could be the one who encouraged them to use the police to help get rid of their competition in the first place!

But then either A: she has a change of heart after joining BRC and stops doing that, or B: DT take the whole thing too far, including the deal with Faux to help him, so then she just stops because of that.

Also, another idea! DT start making deals with the cops and Faux without telling Rise at all. When she finds out, that's around the time BRC show up on the island. She's angry that her own crew went behind her back like this, so then this leads to her testing and then joining BRC.

Actually, speaking of Faux: When Devil Theory get beat by DJ Cyber and FUTURISM then sent to the island, they stage a mutiny and kick Rise out of their crew, blaming her for it. Meanwhile, they start making deals with Faux, who in turn directs them to rat other writers to the police. Faux basically makes himself their new leader, or at least makes them think that. He either wants them as his own crew because he wants to fight against DJ Cyber and FUTURISM, or otherwise he just wants to trick DT and wipe them out easier when he starts his All City King plan.

In this scenario, Rise could be on the island with them because she's trying to figure out some sort of revenge against them for kicking her out (possibly why she "helps" BRC and eventually joins them instead). Otherwise, maybe she finds out about DT's dealings with Faux and the cops, and is mainly keeping an eye on them moreso out of worry. They kicked her out, but she still cares about whether or not they get hurt. Or maybe it's more like a "waiting for the future drama with popcorn ready" situation where she wants to see how bad their karma will get, lol

Bonus scenario: Rise says in the game when she joins BRC, "I will allow ya crew to join me." Maybe, she means BRC joining her... and the rest of Devil Theory. She could very well still see herself as DT's leader even after joining BRC. And in turn, DT still see her as their leader, possibly why the DT member in the post game is actually willing to give BRC a chance to beat his score and make him join.

So then she shows up at the BRC hideout with the rest of Devil Theory in tow!

Tryce: "I'm sorry, what the hell is going on here?"

Rise: "Don't worry, they're all housetrained."

Tryce: "That is not what I'm asking here and you know it."

Rise: "Look, they'll behave if I tell them to behave, and we're genuinely here to join with BRC from now on. So don't worry about it, yeah?"

(also probably Rise x Devil Theory polyamory in this scenario, maybe, lol)

This is technically old art because I finished it last month, and originally got up to finishing the sketch back in the summer of 2024. But it is also new art since I haven't posted this public yet! Okay let me explain.

This was originally for @cypher-zine, of the generic Devil Theory guys instead of my DT OCs specifically. But I got as far as finishing the sketch before realizing that the size didn't match the required size for the zine. Whoops!! :u

I still worked hard on it though, so I saved the sketch to finish it later. If you wanna see my art that was actually included in the final see, see here!

So yeah, eventually I was able to finish it up in December. I held off on actually posting it, because I figured I could just save it for later. Like for when I had a month where I wasn't posting much art.

Welp, due to stresses and anxieties I've had to deal with, that month is the first month of 2025!! Oh boy. I'm sure things will turn around for me soon, but yeah.

One last thing, I hate Devil Theory's cybernetic legs. They're so damn hard to draw. I kinda want to redesign them at some point, to both be easier to draw and to have them make better sense in how they're supposed to work, lmao...
