Women’s history just became even richer
By Marco Margaritoff | Edited By John Kuroski
Published March 14, 2025
Items found with the skeletons — including iron arrowheads, horse harnesses, and a broken vase — helped researchers trace back the burial to the 4th century B.C.
Tumblr media
Institute of Archaeology RASThe oldest woman found in the grave wore a calathos, which is a ceremonial headdress.
Archaeologists in Russia have uncovered the remains of four Amazon women of different ages buried in the same tomb. According to CNN, this is the first time in history that such a discovery has been made.
Published by the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a new study estimates one girl to have been between 12 and 13 years old when she died. The second was aged 20 to 29, the third was 25 to 35, and the fourth was 45 to 50.
The tomb itself was built from clay and oak blocks.
Items discovered at the burial site — iron arrowheads, a bird-shaped hook made of iron, horse harnesses, harness hooks, iron knives, animal bones, various vessels, and a broken, black vase — all helped researchers estimate the burial to have taken place during the 4th century B.C.
This suggests the warrior women were Scythians, who were ancient warriors living throughout Siberia between 200 and 900 B.C. Female Scythians, in turn, were Amazons — and the inspiration behind Wonder Woman.
The more magical elements, of course, have yet to be discovered.
Tumblr media
Institute of Archaeology RASThe excavation took place at a cemetery called Devitsa V, which contains 19 burial mounds.
This remarkable find took place at a cemetery in the Voronezh region of Russia called Devitsa V. The site is comprised of 19 burial mounds, and has been studied since 2010. It took an entire decade, however, for the Don Archaeological Society of the RAS to excavate these specific remains.
“The Amazons are common Scythian phenomenon and during the last decade our expedition has discovered approximately 11 burials of young armed women,” said Valerii Guliaev, head of the expedition.
“Separate barrows were filled for them and all burial rites which were usually made for men were done for them.”
The ancient personal items of this stunning discovery carry with them priceless ancient information that clarifies just how these people lived, millennia ago. While the girl and one of the young woman’s graves were ravaged by robbers in ancient times, the other graves were left undisturbed.
One young woman was buried as a “horseman,” which meant her body underwent a rather macabre tradition that includes cutting the tendons in the legs. Underneath her left shoulder was a bronze mirror, two spears, and a glass bead bracelet along her left side and hand.
At her legs laid a one-armed drinking cup and a dish adorned with a black lacquer design.
Tumblr media
In addition to the headdress, many other priceless artifacts were also found.
The average life expectancy for a Scythian woman was between 30 and 35, making the oldest woman’s age at the time of death impressive enough. The calathos, or ceremonial headdress adorned with floral ornamented plates and pendants, however, was just as surprising.
The jewelry she was buried with was 65 to 70 percent gold, with copper, silver, and iron comprising the rest. Scythian jewelry has previously been found to contain far less gold. She was also buried with an iron knife that was wrapped in fabric, and an iron arrowhead with a forked end.
The researchers explained that the headdress was shocking to find, as so few of them even survived the burial itself, not to mention the years before people dug them up. Archaeologists typically find mere fragments of these calathos, rather than entirely preserved ones.
Besides the intriguing, ancient objects found in the middle of Siberia, the fact that no one has ever found for Amazons buried in the same grave before makes this rather exciting. There’s no telling what researchers will find in the remaining mounds at Devitsa V.
After learning about the ancient Scythian Amazon warrior women being uncovered in Russia, read about the Slavic warrior woman buried with weaponry in a Danish Viking cemetery. Then, learn about the ancient warrior woman unearthed in Armenia who may have been an Amazon.

What if Matthew tries to prove he’s different but leaving flowers by the door of her dorm, passing her cute little notes in class, buying her breakfast/lunch/dinner, calling her cute by a nickname that at first she hates but slowly falls in love with it. I can see her going to Trevor, griffin or Ava for advice
He calls her krasnaya devitsa which is beautiful or gorgeous girl in Slovak. It completely confuses her. She thinks its something made up until she learns more about his family
Nico talks to Ava or Trevor about most things. She'll go to Griffin if she needs someone taken care of (jk).
I feel like their first big interaction after the basketball game is in the spring semester where they just happen to have a class together. Its in the morning so he learns her coffee order and he'll bring her little breakfast snacky things.
It takes her a minute to warm up to the coffee, and she'll never touch the food, until one day when she's feeling sluggish and a bit fatigued. She almost faints and he makes her eat something.
Matthew is so nice and sweet and Nico is super conflicted.
"What do I Avs? He keeps leaving flowers" Nico asked her sister. "and he also keeps calling me krasnaya devitsa, whatever that means."
She grabbed the new flower that was outside her door and added it to the vase of flowers from the previous days. She wasn't about to throw them out, they were pretty.
"Awe that's adorable! Do you know what language? Why can't I have someone like that?" Ava mused over the phone.
"You can have him" She scoffed
"Remind me again what you have against hockey players? What did we ever do to you?" Trevor finally piped up, making himself known.
"Shut up Trevor!"

Devitsa sings in Bulgarian in this song, in another she sings in Russian. She announces at the start: ‘I’ll write a tender song about you’, and the video shows her in various candid/plandid situations over a moody-broody techno-pop instrumental. I struggle with some of the lyrics, but her performance is mercurial and the words ring out like memories alongside fragmented clips. She talks about filming the object of her affection, and then showing the film to them. The video is the cameraperson watching the star (devitsa) watching the cameraperson, the song and the clip are all about the looks of love and how we stare at people. There’s something melancholic in the thudding of the drums and her voice, despite it being a song about infatuation.

Babette for the name aesthetics please? Thank you in advance!
Babette is playful and confident, sweet and just a little bit brash. Babette is laughing too loud (just loud enough), buying small presents for friends, curls escaping a hairstyle.

Red = beautiful
Hi there, my dear friends. Today I'd like to make some kind of "word of the day" post — but in my own way. Cause regular "word of the day" posts are boring — today I'll speak of one word which often is understood incorrectly not only among foreigners, but even by some Russians.
That's the word красный [krasnyi] - lit. "red".
Seemingly, what could be more simple? For example, Красная площадь [krasnaya ploschad'], always translated as the Red Square, is called so because all the buildings on it, including Kremlin towers, are made of red brick... or not?
Tumblr media
Nope :)
Let's start of that from the end of XVIIth century til the end of XIXth one the towers and walls of Moscow Kremlin were painted white, like this:
Tumblr media
To find out the real point of why a white square was called "red", let's have a look at the word красный (m.) / красная (f.) / красное (n.). And also — красивый (m.) / красивая (f.) / красивое (n.). As you may notice, they have the same root: крас-. Because in old Russian language they were literally one word!
Красный originally meant красивый [krasivyi] (beautiful). And the red color itself had a lot of other names in old Russian: червонный [chervonnyi], черёмный [cheryomnyi], багряный [bagryanyi]. It was considered the most attractive color: vivid, noticeable, color of ripe fruit and hot blood, associated with life power. So firstly this was just "beautiful color". And much later this word was completely connected with a color, and for other beautiful thing another word (very look-alike though) was formed.
So, the square was not "red". It was just the largest, the most important and beautiful in Moscow.
And what else can be красный in Russian?
Красное солнце [krasnoye solntse] - beautiful Sun
Tumblr media
Even today some Russian people think that it should look like some kind of a specific "red sun". But that's much more simple. In Pagan times Slavic people worshipped Sun as one of Gods, named Ярило [yarilo], from ярый [yaryi] - "strong, fierce". Surely, such an important character, giving people light and warmness, was loved and called "beautiful". Also, one of old Russian princes Vladimir the Great (958—1015) had a nickname Владимир Красное Солнышко (солнышко is a diminutive from солнце), which was given to him by people who believed in his god-like personality.
Красная девица [krasnaya devitsa] - a beautiful maiden
Tumblr media
Is красная (or красна as a short form) девица some weird red-colored person? Of course no (though on picture above one is wearing red clothes - as we remember, the fanciest ones). This is just how a pretty young girl was called like. This phraseologism was very popular, and often came in pair with добрый молодец [dobryi molodec] - "a handsome lad".
By the way,
добрый is not so simple word also! Literally you can translate it as "kind", but that's not the whole pack of it's meanings. Want to reveal them all? Follow my tumblr and see one of my posts coming soon!
See you!

The daughter of the Tsaritsa and crowned princess of Snezhnaya. Born from a snow-baby the cryo archon breathed life onto, she lived a happy life growing up. As the queen's Little Snowflake she brought warmth into the castle, loving her mother wholeheartedly and was Pierro's dear friend as they were her caretaker. But soon the Tsaritsa grew obsessed with her desire to destroy the old world, beginning to form the Harbringers and increasing the Fatui ranks but she still holds a soft side for a maturing Ana. The printsessa is soon trained in the arts of war, weaponry, military strategies, infiltration, and diplomacy both fair and manipulative along with her daily studies of etiquette and courtly lady skills.
As time goes on both Ana and the Tsaritsa notice that the princess has let to receive a Vision, the notion of the archon's own daughter has not earned the gods favor weights heavily on them. Ana begins to train daily, pushing herself to the limit to prove her drive to both the gods and her mother while the empress's heart grew colder as the Fatui's reach spreads to most corners of Teyvet. One day during a meeting of the Five Harbringers with the Tsaritsa a small ball of light falls slowly from the heavens. The ones gathered watch as the orb swirls and flickers towards Anastasia. Could it be? Could this really be her Vision? Ana reaches out, smiling warmly as she accepts this gift but when the light touches her finger..............CRACK. The effect was immediate as the princess fell ill and seemingly nothing would cure her. Now the Tsaritsa is livid, now her goal must be achieved at all cost. Dottore then makes a proposal, the queen desires the power of the Gnosis's correct? What if they use a tiny shard from all seven and place it into Ana thus granting her complete power? Once the princess's sickness left she was
For her personality, Nastya is sincere but sharper then a blade. She acts like a pure lady with all the poise and dignity but is cold to most people as a leader of the Fatui. Through her words, grace and a soft but firm touch she commands the agents to further her will. But inside she longs for so many things. The return of her mother's warm smile, to roam the land of Teyvet freely, and to bring back the former glory of the Fatui.

She listened to the clock tic-tic-ticking on the wall and attempted to guess what time it might be just from how it sounded. But it always sounded the same. On and on and on, day in and day out, whether it was on her wall or under her pillow.
Some day she swore she would take that clock down and smash it.

Archaeologists Find Warrior’s Grave with Silver Plate in Russia
Archaeologists excavating a warrior’s grave have discovered Scythian treasures in the Ostrogozhsky District of Voronezh region, Russia.
The Scythians were an ancient nomadic people living primarily in the region known as Scythia, which today comprises the Eurasian steppes of Kazakhstan, the Russian steppes of the Siberian, Ural, Volga and Southern regions, and eastern Ukraine.
Excavations were conducted by the Don Expedition from the Institute of Archaeology at the Russian Academy of Science, where the researchers have been excavating the Devitsa V necropolis that consists of 19 burial mounds.
A study of mound 7 in the centre of the cemetery revealed a wooden tomb constructed with seventeen large oak pillars, covered with half oak beams that dates from the 4th century BC.
Within the burial was the skeleton of a man aged around 40-49 years of age, in addition to small gold semi-sphere plates, an iron knife, a horse rib, a spearhead and three javelins. Adjacent to the burial the team also discovered horse harnesses, six bronze plates in the shape of wolves, the cut jaw from a young bear, a moulded cup, and several black-glazed vessels.
The most notable discovery is a silver plate measuring 34.7 cm by roughly 7.5 cm, that depicts several deities, including the goddess Artimpasa, who was generally associated with fertility, power over sovereignty and the priestly force. Artimpasa was also an androgynous goddess of warfare, fecundity, vegetation and was the Scythian variant of the Iranian goddess Arti that Herodotus also equated with Aphrodite Urania.
Artimpasa is presented on the plate surrounded from both sides with the figures of winged eagle-headed griffons, that archaeologists suggest is a representation of the cultural fusion of traditions between Asian Minor and Ancient Greece.
The left side of the plate is decorated with the depictions of syncretic creatures standing in a so-called heraldic pose, whilst the right side has two round buckles depicting an anthropomorphic character with a crown surrounded by two griffins.
Commenting on the plate, Prof. Valeriy Gulyaev from the Don expedition said: “The discovery has made an important contribution to our concepts of Scythian beliefs. Firstly, a particular number of deities are depicted at once on one item. Secondly, it is the first example of an object depicting deities found so far from the main Scythian centers”.
