It's quite funny how the only speculation theory MatPat was ever right of was the story for the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared pilot that has been canned and practically erased from the franchise

I was just watching the Vox/Al song (I said I wasn't going to watch the leaks but I caved for just the one song), and while I was listening to it I was thinking "Why does that tune sound so familiar?"
Then I realized. It kind of sounds like a jazzier version of Shrignold's songs from Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. And Shrignold's a cult leader and so was Vox.
https://youtu.be/sXOdn6vLCuU?si=pxjPUnglVFr1t0es&t=107
I have no idea if it's just me DHMIS hyperfixating or if Viv knowingly used the melody, I just found the tune similarities funny.
-Afterlife Anone
I can hear it. Not saying there is or isn't anything to that -- it's an easy thing to happen in music -- I just want an excuse to post DHMIS because I adore it.

something ive been wanting to talk about for a while now is the fact that the very first episode of dhmis ever is actually not the most innocent one, what it displays is actually very disturbing. it’s evident that in this one, red, duck and yellow are the ones causing the “chaos” here, but really they’re only doing what paige instructed them to do - get creative. but because of them doing this, she tells them to not be creative ever again. and i feel like this is one of the best moments in dhmis where the fact that the whole digital world really is just made by roy to break yellow down really leaks through - a manipulation tactic used by abusive parents is trying to tell their kids that they can’t do anything right on their own, and it shows here very much with the green part as well, and also mostly the clown part. here, yellow is clearly inspired by paiges words and is motivated to make something that makes him happy, but she immediately shuts down that glimpse of personal talent due to it not meeting her standards. and then she continues to give her own instructions, and when they again don’t follow these specific instructions, she concludes that they shouldn’t be allowed to create, and that they brought this on themselves.

i cant believe it.. another person who randomly fuses dhmis characters with their other fandoms.. anyway i am so listening i am so listening ears are OPEN
some other easy ones are probs like.. sweetheart and shrignold from episode three (both love based) and the unbread twins and any of the guys from the food episode could work aswell.
bossman hero or jawsum could maybe fuse with tony the clock or maybe the briefcase from episode 1 of the actual tv series?? shrugs, i’m brainstorming here
signing off with a anon tag, i will be back - ☕️ anon
:D I have to rewatch the episodes and the tv show lol I have some really silly ideas for this! I think fusing some of the headspace bosses with already existing DHMIS teachers could be really fun! It could also be fun to maybe come up with ideas for their own lessons/designs a bit different from the normal DHMIS ones too!
(Spoilers for DHMIS below/the teachers and students/songs below and also I like ramble quite a bit sorry! )
I can totally see all those ideas happening! I think the food episode one would be really funny with the unbread twins just always going back to bread or Bossman hero bringing out unemployed hs Kel in the jobs episode
I can also maybe see the unbread twins fitting the episode about family in some ways (although that one episode was creepy lol) I also have thought about maybe Yellow guy (Doi or Manny or David (I'm not sure I remember which name the fandom likes more) ) being inspiration for Angel in some way? Like maybe the "Smart" version of him could look a bit more similar to Neb while the "Dumb" version is more like Angel - Like maybe something happened to him and he's not fully himself/is split like the yellow guy
I also had ideas about if this was a au in general what the story/plot would be.. I thought of maybe they could be trapped in the house and each floor can have a new set of three students ( for random example: like floor one can have kel, aubrey, and sunny and the next has the maverick, vance, and angel or something) and each episode is them learning a new thing from a teacher/hs character
Maybe the plot can be something like hs leaking into other people's dreams or all the characters being trapped by sunny or something and until their own problems and sunny's can be resolved they can't leave the nightmare they are all trapped in. I'm not really sure Overall I have a lot of just scrambled/random ideas about it! :D If anyone has any headcanons/thoughts let me know! I have doodled concept designs for maybe one or two people but besides that I haven't really explored the idea too much sorry! ^^ Hope this wasn't too disorganized

DHMIS Update For September 7th 2022
WARNING: the following post may have the details of the plot of the episodes so proceed with caution if you do not want to get spoiled!!!
Thanks to @dannythesecond1 for bringing this to my attention and for sending me some of these photos after I lost access
(While I was writing this, they whipped the episodes of the site so unfortunately could not get all the new photos nor can I confirm that these episode summaries are true)
You can still access the episode list with this link here but if you click on an episode it kicks you off it
The British Comedy Guide has updated their listing for DHMIS.
These include all new photos (these photos vary in quality) and episode summaries!
We will go through them in the order they are listed!
Tumblr media
What is a job? Who are a family? And what is that horrible noise? Join three friends Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck as they learn about everything there is to know with the help of some friendly talking objects!
But wait, maybe something's not quite right here. Every teacher they meet on their journey seems a bit out of their depth. What lessons are they actually learning? Don't Hug Me I'm Scared is a deeply unsettling comedy puppet show; think The Muppet Show relocated to Twin Peaks.
It started life as a YouTube phenomenon. Eleven years and a quarter of a billion views later, main characters Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck are now inside your television trying to get out.
Episode 1- Jobs
Tumblr media
Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck have an important day of 'nothing at all' booked in. Red and Yellow are both very excited but Duck is outraged. He demands to have something to do! And that something turns out to be something called a job.
Episode 2- Death
Tumblr media
What do you think happens when we die? Do we come back as our favourite animal or object? In today's lesson Duck learns that he is in fact dead because he forgot to drink water. The other two seem a little confused by this, there are usually three of them. Who's going to sit in Duck's chair?
Episode 3- family
Tumblr media
What does family mean to you and your family and their family? Well in today's lesson we will find out. Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck meet two adorable twins who point out that they should not be living with each other as they are not related like a family. The guys begin to question their relationship and get very upset. Luckily the twins invite them over to see a real family in action and have their blood tested!
Episode 4- Friendship
Tumblr media
What is real friendship? In today's lesson the gang are excited to get online using their computer but, oh no! Yellow Guy has lost the password. Red Guy and Duck berate him but luckily a confident worm called Warren steps in to stop the bullying getting too out of hand. Warren decides to show the guys the true meaning of friendship by climbing inside Yellow Guy's head.
Episode 5- Transportation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where do things go when they are not where they should be? It's time for Red Guy, Yellow Guy and Duck to be taught about transport by a very old leaking train. Red Guy is excited by the idea of going on a journey and finally getting away from the house but unfortunately it's not that simple, he will need a personalised number plate.
Episode 6- Electricity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Did you know that everything that has wires is part of the electric family? The guys meet Electracey the meter and look at all the objects and animals in their house to see which ones have wires! It turns out loads do! But what happens when you replace old batteries with new ones? Yellow Guy goes on a journey to find out

Theory (more like headcanon) time!
Thinking about the "censorship " the show might have, and on the fridge scene, when Duck says "Really? You like looking at me?"
Tumblr media
Red sorta jumps at this response, he is genuinely surprised, something unexpected happened for him.
Which could mean:
-He never expected Duck to react like this, or to react so happy and surprised
-This is the first time Red actually got to say it, he has been trying to say something alike for a long time but it always got cut or changed by the “censorship” and is surprised this time it actually went through
- ???
-all of the above
Which is why he doesn’t back up or tries to re-phrase it so it sounds more casual, he has been trying to say it for the longest time (maybe innumerable resets too)
Anyways the concept of the ‘Kid’s show’ they are in being ok with showing gore and misleading concepts to children but absolutely refusing to show a kind more intimate moment between two man because they don’t want any ‘bad interpretations’ leaking in has me scratching at the wall
Going crazy insane over this. Absolutely frothing at the mouth over that little jerk Red gives when Duck answers him. He either wasn't expecting his question to be heard, didn't expect Duck to answer him in a non-hostile manner, thought he'd be immediately punished by the showrunners for speaking out of turn OR all of the above.
Your last point is the most interesting concept of the entire premise of the show. The hypothetical audience DHMIS is performing for is fine with the gore, and the trauma, and the disturbing imagery and the constant, endless anguish any of the hypothetical children will be exposed to, but two men sharing a quiet moment? It has to be done in the shadows, away from prying eyes, behind the showrunner's back. Cries my fucking eyes out fr.

since according to the q&a, dhmis has no real meaning or conspiracy/theory attached to it, here is my interpretation of the webseries since day 1 bc i feel so validated
dhmis has always felt like a critique of children’s media. it’s inspirations very clearly take after kids shows, typically those at very young children who need to learn concepts like time and creativity.
i would also say it’s a critique of the values we teach our children. in the first episode of the youtube series, the characters are taught about creativity and how it’s about expressing yourself. one would assume, correctly, that creativity and one’s expression is never “wrong”. but when yellow guy says he likes green, or something to that degree, the sketchbook (our teacher) says that green isn’t creative. there’s no rhyme or reason to it; it’s not creative just because they said so. they strip away that part of yellow guy’s creativity for no real reason, they invalidate the entire point of their lesson then and there.
it says something about what we teach to our children when we don’t uphold the values we’re giving them.
the same goes for the love episode. yellow guy is taught that love exists but there are rules and strictures, and everything has to be a certain way. only a man and a woman can be in love, you can only love if you have this or that. love, itself, is abstract and nuanced, but is portrayed strictly for the sake of a very obvious cishet agenda that much of the media uses to silence and hide the existence of gay people. this is something we see a lot of media in general, not just kid’s media, but there’s always been this hesitance to even imply gay people exist to children---some find it better to water down love and simplify it to the extreme than to acknowledge the vastness of the concept at all. that’s just what i feel this episode in particular is criticizing/acknowledging, and how toxic something like that can very easily become over time.
and again, we have the food/healthy eating episode. what the teachers say is healthy versus what isn’t is extremely inconsistent. we can, of course, see a correlation with this and a lot of research done with food and its health benefits and drawbacks. in the U.S. at least, many companies have villainized fat and made it the cause of being fat. however, actual research shows that it’s sugar, not fat. yet we’re constantly bombarded with so much information at once, that what we know about food and health is very inconsistent. and i could say the same about the needed calories one takes a day, how it’s hardly a bare minimum and much of the research done is extremely biased. and when that’s in the adult world, it leaks into the world of children as well. when adults are our teachers, we rely on them to teach us correctly. we’re told to eat this and not that, but suddenly it’s the other way around. we’re taught some food is even bad, that maybe even eating it makes you bad. if there’s ever been a question as to why so many kids are vulnerable to eating disorders, it’s the lack of consistency in food information, the way we teach kids about food, and our bias against anything that isn’t the beauty standard norm.
there’s also the family episode, the work episode, etc, etc. but i think you get my point by now. it’s a critique of not just what we teach children, but how we teach children. we are their teachers, and so much of what we teach them will impact them majorly. we cannot afford to teach them poorly, yet in so many cases, we do just that to reach our specific goals. whether it’s for money or for religion (cough cough christianity and its other siblings) or whatever else, children are just another means to an end. and when they’re just a means to an end, what we do to them doesn’t matter.
and when they don’t matter, we aren’t teaching them as much as we are enforcing a response.
sketchbook didn’t make the three characters more creative, did they? they simply did what sketchbook considered to be creative, or at the very least, what they thought being creative was. they didn’t learn anything about actual self-expression or what creativity means to them. yellow guy wasn’t actually taught about love, how to love others and himself, he was taught to sit and shut up and follow the “rules” of love, even when he didn’t like it. and again, yellow didn’t learn anything about nutrition in the food episode. he was told to eat whatever they gave him, and because they’re the teachers, the ones with power in this dynamic, he did it.
and when you fall out of line, and you don’t do exactly what you’re told (ie. red guy, duck guy), you’re punished. you’re isolated, you’re left out, whatever it is... that’s meant to teach you that when you’re not sitting down and taking whatever you’re given---you’re a bad student. you’re not learning at all. you’re dysfunctional.
all in all, i have always believed that dhmis, the webseries was a critique at children’s media, as well as the values we teach them and our hypocrisy regarding these values. we can directly see that these lessons are distressing to its students, and the teachers don’t care so long as they don’t fall out of line. the goal, it seems, is obedience: do it because i said so, not because of what it means. this is why red guy is gone and why when duck guy tries to fight back, he’s ultimately discarded. and of course it’s distressing, but the students were never the focus, so why should they (the teachers) even care? the goal is obedience. no matter the lesson, no matter how traumatizing it is, no matter how much is destroys us and each other.
