Had to share the amazing double feature poster included in the booklet for the amazing new Blu-ray of The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews from Film Masters.

This poster makes them look like a true kaiju horror epic and now I want a print of it to hang on my wall.

Two sisters, Celeste and Isa, fall under the terrifying spell of a mysterious vinyl record from the 1970s. Used to help with stress and bring the listener to a state of calming self-hypnosis, the recording has the unfortunate side-effect of manifesting a doppelganger of the listener into our world. This “double” then grows stronger by the day to copy and take over the life of the person who played the vinyl.

Seeking the help of the woman who originally created the recording, hypnotist Lena Carlsson (Christina Lindberg, Thriller: A Cruel Picture), Celeste and Isa try to banish the doppelgangers back to their own world before their lives are lost forever.

Spoils of War, Diabolik DVD Arrow Sale Edition: The homies at @diabolikdvd had an amazing @arrowvideo sale a couple of weeks ago. Obviously nothing would ship til the sale was over due to the possibility of multiple orders, so I just got these in last week. I've always had a soft spot for Children of the Corn. It's really campy and a little silly at times, but I still dig it. Can't go wrong with Arrow 4K. The Rightous was definitely a blind purchase. The box art and packaging were too sick looking not to check out. Lastly we have Dark Water. Which is one of my favorite Japanese horror films. It's so hauntingly beautiful. My only disappointment is that since it's one of the older Arrow releases it doesn't have a slip or a limited box set version. The Farmer will be released on Blu-ray in early February via Scorpion Releasing. Once thought to be a lost movie, the 1977 revenge thriller is available to pre-order for $27.99 exclusively from DiabolikDVD. It’s limited to 2,000.

David Berlatsky directs from a script by Janice Eymann, John Carmody, Patrick Regan, and George Fargo. Gary Conway, Angel Tompkins, Michael Dante, and George Memmoli star.

After the end of World War II, soldier Kyle Martin (Gary Conway) has returned to his family farm in Georgia. Now back home in the southern USA, Kyle discovers that the local bank wants to foreclose on his family’s farm. But Kyle then saves the life of a local gambler Johnny O’ (Michael Dante) from a burning car accident and is rewarded $15,000, delivered by Johnny O’s girl Betty (Angel Tompkins). However, that was still not enough money to pay the bank for the farm. When Johnny O’ gets blinded for past-posting on a horse race run by a local gangster Pessinni (George Memmoli) and his local thugs, he offers Kyle the money he needs to save the farm in return for killing off the gangsters one by one.

I had sworn off buying any other movies for the rest of June at least, but I had to order this one.

A clip from “Giants & Toys,” by one our very favorite filmmakers, Yasuzo Masumura. Masumura made a number of pitch-black satires about post-war corporatization in Japan, and this film - featuring warring candy companies and one model with very rotten teeth - is one of those. It’s the first Masumura film we saw, on DVD, during our time working at Kim’s Video, and we’ve been able to see about 20 of his films with English subs since, on video, and a number at NYC’s Japan Society. (The great, and dearly departed Fantoma label put out a number of his films in the DVD era, along with key Kenneth Anger, Coffin Joe, early Fassbinder, Jodorowsky, Corbucci and Sam Fuller titles.) ———— Despite this, and despite noted critic Jonathan Rosenbaum’s championing of him, he remains almost unknown in the states. He’s also notably absent from the blank, bland algorithmically-generated world of “streaming content.”——-Now, the UK’s wonderful @arrowvideo is making this film available on Blu-Ray (they did a double feature of two of his other business satires a few months back). Despite so few people buying home video now, and it being a niche interest at best, we’re probably in the strongest era of it ever, content-and-quality-wise. Can you explain why there is a memoria dvd coming out? I thought it wasn’t getting a dvd release!?

Neon is only handling US distribution so their stupid little plan only applies to the US thankfully. The release I posted is from a UK distributor, and there are retailers in the us that specialize in importing releases like this (i like diabolikdvd from my experience but there are others like rarewaves) so luckily it won’t be too much trouble for me to get my hands on it 😌
