A moment’s patience, and in turn I’ll quickly rejoin you with your debauchery, already in progress.
I used to post a lot about music, but lately I’ve just been doing this one annual list, which this year I am posting here.
2020 was a good but not great year for female Kpop. 2018 was such an amazing year, probably the best year for female Kpop that there will ever be, so it’s going to be difficult for a while for any year to measure up. But 2020 did pretty okay, all things considered. Older groups began to inevitably wane, as younger groups continued their ascent, their ranks bolstered by a bumper crop of impressive rookie groups. Latin beats and the Ableton Wavetable synth continued to dominate. The choreography and visuals and video production values all continued to skyrocket. Srsly, go back and watch a 2013 episode of Inkigayo and be relatively appalled. Overall, there was a lot to praise.
These were my favorites from the year, ranked:
20. Oh My Girl: “Nonstop” Not nearly their best, but so happy for them finally having a major hit.
19. IZ*ONE: “Secret Story Of The Swan” Half this group is too talented and is having their time wasted. Their best song since the one they stole from CLC.
18. GFriend: “Apple” Watching Big Hit transform their acquisition has been a pleasant surprise.
17. cignature: “Assa” Killer chorus.
16. Weki Meki: “Cool” Been pulling for Yoojung and Co. for forever, and finally Fantagio comes through with something half decent for them, with a welcome image makeover to boot.
15. LOONA: “Why Not?” There’s no rational reason to be disappointed with LOONA this year, but my expectations have been so so high ever since “Girl Front,” making this and “So What” feel kinda blah comparatively.
14. CLC: “Helicopter” At or near the top of my list from 2017-2019, I thought this was a chart topper on first listen as well, but it doesn’t quite hold up over time.
13. GFriend: “Labyrinth” Shoulda been the single.
12. Red Velvet I&S: “Naughty” Completely nailed 1990.
11. Everglow: “La Di Da” Loved the concept, especially the wet black gear, obvs.
10. Cherry Bullet: “Hands Up” Any trepidation I had over the für Elise reference went away as soon as Yuju started growling through the second verse.
09. Everglow: “Dun Dun” Yes, like “Adios”, they were drafting along behind Blackpink, but unlike “Kill This Love” or “How You Like That”, I didn’t find myself hitting the skip button after a couple weeks.
08. Red Velvet I&S: “Monster” Meow meow, meow meow meow. Team Irene. Seulgi bias.
07. (G)I-DLE: “Oh my god” If only netizens knew anything about anything, Jeon Soyeon would be their biggest hero.
06. Dreamcatcher: “BOCA” No fear; no prisoners.
05. Weeekly: “Tag Me” Somehow managed to make a completely moribund concept fresh, not only by being gifted an abundantly catchy confection to perform, but by thoroughly nailing that performance. Hopefully, Play M’s takeaway from “Zig Zag” is that such lightning is not caught in a bottle twice and it's time to move the group forward.
04. Chung Ha: “Stay Tonight” In a just world, this is her biggest hit yet.
03. aespa: “Black Mamba” This is how it must have felt when Led Zeppelin debuted.
02. Nature: “Girls” Deceptively dark and complex work, from an unexpected source. Perfect hook. Criminally underappreciated.
01. Dreamcatcher: “Scream” Devil, eyes, come / 눈을 뜬다 / 눈을 뜬다.
I am also very sad that other groups aren’t on the list and/or weren’t higher on the list. I really wish their songs had been better, because I love those groups too and want to see them performing better songs.

Super Junior (슈퍼주니어) - SORRY, SORRY (쏘리 쏘리)
This week’s rec is one of my absolute favourites: Super Junior’s SORRY, SORRY!
Quick ramble before we get into this: when this song released back in 2009, it was the first time I ever listened to a ‘kpop’ song. I’m not even kidding when I say that this song and entire album was a game changer for me. This was my stepping stone into kpop and, consequently, Korean culture and it really does mean a lot for me! Like, bruh can you even believe that March 2021 will mark me down for being a fan of Korean music for over 12 YEARS. This is honestly such a classic kpop song, as well as being one of the most well known in my opinion.
Anyhow! Back to the point:
Tumblr media
watch the MV here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6QA3m58DQw&ab_channel=SMTOWN
SORRY, SORRY was released March 3rd, 2009 as a digital single before coming the title track of their 3rd studio album of the same name. The song was their comeback as a complete group since their activities as subgroup in Mainland China and South Korea in 2008. It was Super Junior’s most successful single on the music charts and won them a sum total of 10 recognitions throughout their promoting period.
SORRY, SORRY was a new style for Super Junior, a dance song stimulated with heavy electronic beats in the genre known as ‘urban minimal funky’, and unlike their previous releases. It’s a ‘polished and trendy’ dance song, with an exciting beat and earworm chorus, with influences of American funk and contemporary R&B.
This song was an international hit, though not as we may know it today. Rather, it became the best selling k-pop album in Taiwan, Thailand, China and the Philippines, where they credited Sorry, Sorry to have been the first k-pop album to reach number one in the music charts from the country. It was an instant hit, and stayed number one in Taiwan for an astounding 37-weeks in their k-pop singles chart. Sorry, Sorry achieved both national and international success and this has been their best-selling single in South Korea since.
For fans too, who had been waiting for a return of all 13 members, this was an exciting (if not bittersweet) moment for them, as this marked the last time they came together as a full group again before two members, Hangeng and Kibum, left the group.
Tumblr media
Outside of South Korea, SORRY, SORRY, was heavily promoted in other Asian communities. Over 51 subway trains in Taipei were covered in Sorry, Sorry advertisements from April 17th through to May 7th, to promote the Taiwanese release which came out on April 17th. Among these trains was one called the Super Junior Train, which was entirely covered with Super Junior posters.
Not only that, but this song had a big cultural impact, the dance having been covered many times not just by idols, but professional sports players as well. In April 2009, volleyball player Kim Yeonkoung from Heungdeuk Life stated if her team won the 2008-09 NH Nonghyup professional volleyball championship, they would perform the routine. They won and performed this at the award ceremony. Football player Kim Seungyong danced to Sorry, Sorry after scoring a goal against Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in the 2009 K League. Basketball players have danced to it at the Dongbu Promy Professional Basketball season awards ceremony too, an event which marked the end of the season in professional basketball league.
The honour guard of the South Korean Air Force has danced to Sorry, Sorry (alongside Gee by SNSD) ahead of the groundbreaking ceremony of Airforce Museum at Sanjicheon, Jeju City. Employees of Korean Air created a parody group called 직장인 슈퍼주니어 (jikjjangin super junior) which literally translates to Office Workers Super Juniors, and performed the choreography at an in-house concert held at the Korean Air HQ.
Finally, in the Philippines, a video of inmates known as the CPDRC Dancing Inmates, from the Cebu Provinvial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre, dancing to the song went viral after being uploaded to YouTube.

members, left to right. back row: Ryeowook, Eunhyuk, Kangin, Donghae, Yesung. middle row: Heechul, Sungmin, Kibum, Shindong. front row: Hangeng, Leeteuk, Siwon, Kyuhyun.
Super Junior was originally a 12-member group formed under SM Entertainment in November 2005. They debuted with their single Twins (Knock Out). They later became a 13-member group when their youngest, Cho Kyuhyun, was added in May 2006, in line with their release U. Known by other nicknames such as SJ or SuJu, Super Junior have been dubbed by the media and the Korean Music Awards as the Kings of the Hallyu Wave due to their prominent contributions in the Korean wave.
With the release of Sorry, Sorry, their best-selling single, they launched into international recognition. Throughout the years of their career, they have been divided into smaller groups, being able to target different music industries and audiences at the same time. The members have all individually branched out into other Entertainment Industry roles such as hosting, presenting and acting. Due to their success and popularity as all-rounded entertainers, they have led other Korean entertainment companies to begin training their groups in other aspects of the entertainment industry, rather than just singing, dancing and rapping.
These other groups included: Super Junior-M, their Chinese sub-unit. Super Junior-T, their Trot sub-unit, Super Junior-H, their ‘Happy’ sub-unit. Two other more recent sub-units are Super Junior K.R.Y - Kyuhyun, Ryeowook and Yesung, their ballad sub-unit, and finally - my personal favourite - Super Junior D&E, comprised of Donghae & Eunhyuk, main dancers and best friends within the group, who cover a myriad of genres in comparison.
Super Junior was the best-selling k-pop artist for four years in a row. They have earned 13 music awards from MAMA, 19 from the Golden Disc Awards, are the second singing group to win Favourite Artist Korea at the 2008 MTV Asia Awards after jtL in 2003. 2012: they were nominated ‘Best Asian Act’ in MTV Europe Music Awards. 2015: they won the ‘International Artist’ and ‘Best Fandom’ awards at the Teen Choice Awards. March 2020, Super Junior broke their own record topping the Korean Album Chart of Taiwan’s KKBOX for a jaw-dropping 122 consecutive weeks since 2017, with their 8th album Play, the 8th album repackage REPLAY in 2018, the 9th album Time_Slip from 2019 and the 9th album repackage Timeless, 2020.
As it stands right now, Super Junior have only 9 active members left in their group. In 2009, Hangeng filed a lawsuit against SM, which saw him stop promoting until he finally left the company in 2011. Kibum also took a step back from the group in 2009, opting to focus more on his acting career through a temporary hiatus. Though he appeared in the MV for Sorry, Sorry, and was featured in promotional adverts for their upcoming concert Super Show 2, he did not attend. His contract ended with SM in 2015. Kangin left in 2019, following another DUI incident.
Though Sungmin has not been classified as left and his contract with SM is still active, he has been on hiatus since 2015.
Super Junior’s fandom name is E.L.F, standing for Everlasting Friend and their fandom colour is Pearl Sapphire Blue.
Other songs I would recommend are (it’s long): the entire SORRY, SORRY album, It’s You, Bonamana, Boom, 2YA2YAO!, the entire Sexy, Free & Single album/repackage, A-CHA, Oops!! ft f(x), 라라라라 Be My Girl, Opera, Lo Siento, Black Suit, SUPER Clap, Scene Stealer, Good Day for a Good Day, Magic, Devil, This is Love, MAMACITA, Evanesce, SUPERMAN, Mr. Simple, Twins (Knock Out) and honestly so so so SO much more than I can remember right now!
I don’t listen to their sub-units as often, considering M, T & H are pretty much disbanded at this point.
But recs for D&E are as followed: OPPA OPPA, Danger, ‘Bout You, 너는 나만큼 (Growing Pains), I Wanna Dance (사네), 촉이 와 (Can You Feel It?), 아직도 난 (Still You), B.A.D, Skeleton.

Are you doing okay what with all the VV stuff that happened? It seemed like you and Mina were close
Hey hey, thanks for the worries anon! Mina of mvcreates/Violet Vineyard and I were properly talking as friends for only a few months quite a long time ago. Emotionally I’m completely fine, but I do have stuff to say and I do want to help document things if any of it is useful in any way. A lot of it will be dry because it’s just documenting, but some of it will be “juicier” I guess, and I’d like to corroborate some of the things my friends are saying. I’ll put this under the cut for people who don’t want to scroll through all this and/or have no idea what I’m talking about and want to keep it that way!
You guys can check @nuwuhorizons‘s blog to see what exactly is going on and I believe they’re also reblogging some things others who were members are saying. The case of people dogpiling a 19-year-old trans person and making fun of their name is on the blog (post here, wayback machined here).
I can corroborate a bunch of what @rrrawrf-writes (post here, wayback machined here) and @gingerly-writing (post here, wayback machined here) have said. I backread through the interaction that Ginger talks about in her post (of course not the DMs, but the interaction itself).
I know some people may be confused about why Ginger only has that one screenshot of what she said and may not see that as full evidence, but Violet Vineyard had a super strict “don’t screenshot and post anything” with lots of scary looking legal stuff attached to it policy and, well, Ginger can’t be sharing stuff without anyone’s permission if it’s just the message she herself sent, but they’d have grounds to take god knows what action with what backing against her if she posted something else. But, well, for what it’s worth, as someone who read through that conversation a little after it happened, it was certainly a case of dogpiling and left a bad taste in my mouth, and it strikes me as really odd that the mods would try to shut someone down like that.
I haven’t really been doing stuff in writeblr lately as you can probably tell from my blog, but yeah, Mina herself and a lot of people in that particular friend group of hers, as Lisa mentions, have just disappeared off Tumblr. I can also attest to the dogpiling tendencies and this Mina Is Always Right tendency, and the fervor with which people would defend her.
I was honestly never close enough to Mina to be in that friend group. She and I were only really talking to each other for a few months over a year ago. I don’t think I was “writeblr-y” enough to fit in with them. I was also not super active in that server. I didn’t post much about my wips because I in general don’t think I really post a lot about them. Therefore I didn’t get like, massive benefits off of the whole “network” thing, but  I’d reblog some stuff when I saw it. I was probably most known for posting pictures of my plants, lol. And I would occasionally hop in to talk briefly about kpop with like, one person? (They went by Kay and their url was like, lvcrezia? lvcrezias? Something like that.) In fact, probably the last thing I ever said in that server was a super quick conversation about Red Velvet’s “Monster” music video around the time it dropped.
In fact, for the sake of being super transparent/establishing credibility, and for documenting purposes, I’ll list all the non-plant-pictures and non-kpop conversations I can remember actually participating in. Some of these will lead off into bigger topics, and I’ll specify those. But first, a word.
TO ANY OF THE FORMER MODS WHO MIGHT COME AFTER ME FOR SAYING THINGS ABOUT THE SERVER, SINCE THIS HAS APPARENTLY HAPPENED TO OTHERS: The server is deleted, and so is the text of the whole “contract” (yes, really) that people had to agree to in order to join VV. I remember that the agreement made sure we didn’t post screenshots publicly, but other than that I genuinely do not remember the text and I have no way of referencing it to keep in line with it since the server is deleted. I do not remember if documenting things like this is against anything I have agreed to, I have no record of the agreement, and I have not been notified of any place to access a record of the agreement before the server was deleted. If my post is some sort of violation, you cannot hold me accountable for rules that I am unable to follow, and I would greatly appreciate not being targeted with empty threats shrouded in scary legal language. If you have any point of contention with what I have said, feel free to take it up either publicly or privately. Please do @ me if it’s specific to me; I’m not really the vagueposting kind. If any of you want me to delete this post, you will need to provide actual proof of the agreement that I made by joining Violet Vineyard, and you will also need to prove that the rules were not edited after I agreed to them. If any of them were follow-up rules not from the beginning of the server, it’s possible that I did not see them and therefore you need to provide proof that I agreed to those, too. In addition, since image editing is what set off this avalanche in the first place hence we’re all aware that there’s software that allows us to edit images and pass them off as an original thing, you’ll need to provide proof that any screenshots/images are undoctored. Furthermore, since the rules have been deleted with the server, as the method I used to agree to follow them, you must prove that my agreement is still valid, since it seems to me it’s been nullified since it’s, well, gone either through deletion or kicking me out alongside everyone else. Tl;dr you don’t scare me lol.
Anyways, back to a list of the non-kpop, non-plant-pics, non-my-wips-promo conversations I can actually remember:
On January 5, 2020, the server had a conversation about Roshani Chokshi’s book The Gilded Wolves. I can give the date because during/in the aftermath of the conversation, which I talked about the book in, Mina DMed me quickly. (This was also the last time Mina ever directly contacted me.) I’ll talk about this later.
In February 2020 I believe I quickly mentioned getting concert tickets.
Either early this year or late last year I think I posted some stuff about landscape photography, with some photos of the beach.
I believe I posted a couple fashion pics at some point?
Back in May 2019 I got some kinda weird asks about Violet Vineyard and I think people were talking about that, and I assume I participated since I was the one who received the asks. At that time VV was like a super new server and didn’t really have much as far as the issues we’ve been talking about go, so I defended it. (I’ll be talking about this later.)
Probably in June/July 2019 people in the server had a discussion about Black Muslim characters and representation, initiated by me for one of my WIPs.
I think we talked about South Asian sweets at some point???
I believe in April/May 2019, there was some stuff in that server reagarding “drama” with Castor who at that time went by the url pilipalea that I honestly don’t remember much of. Castor was never in VV, but I believe they were in a server with Mina at some other point. There was something about grammar and proofreading?? (I’ll be referencing this soon as well.)
I helped someone with their computer science homework at some point.
I asked for r&b music recs at some point either late 2019 or earlier 2020.
I’ve also talked about ethnic clothes I think.
We’ve talked about Hindu nationalism and how awful it is.
I think we’ve talked about tone policing and how woc are often portrayed as “aggressive.”
We’ve talked about health/fitness and exercise.
I recommended Jade City and some other books I’m a fan of in there.
Probably talked about Bollywood movies at some point.
The fact that I can remember probably most of my conversations that lasted more than like, one message in there is, I think, a pretty good testament to a) me having at least a kind of decent memory and b) I wasn’t participating in the server so regularly that the conversations kind of blend together. I know this is all kind of long and dry for anyone who’s here for drama purposes lol, but I did want to establish that I’ve been in that server for quite a while and that I wasn’t monitoring it heavily; in fact, I had it muted very soon after joining it.
I wasn’t super close to anyone that I’d met through VV. People who are friends that I still regularly contact who were in VV with me, I had met through other servers and other interactions on Tumblr. I’ll disclose right now that I have been longtime friends with Ginger, Lisa, and Eff (@time-to-write-and-suffer), who have all come out against VV, and that we are in our own servers with people from writeblr. Ginger and Lisa were both in VV, Eff has never been.
Okay, back to maybe “juicier” stuff.
Mina had always positioned herself almost as this “tumblr mom” type. She’d reference her age a lot, which would contrast a lot with how a significant portion of the members were much younger and, I think, set up the dynamic of people looking up a lot to her and always coming to her defense. After all, we’re talking a bunch of passionate kids who’d found a writeblr network. And the server definitely seemed “legit”; I myself was pretty impressed with just how tightly organized everything was, and like I mentioned, there was fancy legal language to ~protect their rights~ and whatnot. Mina herself seemed so accomplished with so many talents: she’d post her writing and artwork, I believe she’d made a couple pieces of music, she’d work out and keep in shape, she had a seemingly wonderful loving relationship with her husband, she was active in research fields professionally and as an outbreak responder, and she, of course, had a significant online presence as a “big writeblr.” I remember when she’d started blowing up, so soon after her blog had been created, because of her prolific content and friendly persona. People, especially younger ones who had no other writeblr support group, looked up to her and trusted her. And the nature of the server was to shower everyone in praise, so Mina found herself on the receiving end of quite a bit of it. Mina would also actively boost and review other writers’ content, genuinely engaging with it and providing feedback, support, and valuable resources.
Mina also had a tight-knit group of adult friends. Some of them I believe carried over from pre-VV times (incuding CJ of typewriter-jade if I’m remembering correctly, who made fun of the trans person’s name in the reblog chain in the link to nuwuhorizons’s blog), while some were made afterwards. They would act super friendly and familiar with each other, which I think contributed to a lot of people falling into this little “friendship” super fast. They were also authority figures and role models, and tended to agree with each other, so everyone just went along with that.
These factors, I think, heavily influenced the dogpiling tendencies. People were eager to defend their community, where they’d found so much love and support for their work. Minors would go along with adults in conversations. When someone said something, others would enthusiastically support them. And people were just so into each other that I really couldn’t keep up, which is probably why I didn’t participate too much. People became just super fast friends and the server was so large and so seemingly “professional” and structured in how it was made. I think people just kind of assumed everyone in there was great and their friend who could be trusted deeply, when in reality that’s just impossible if there are like, 100+ members. Meaning if something minorly negative happened (like on that literal eleven-year-old’s blog), everyone would come in to say something to demonstrate their emphatic loyalty, even when it became excessive for something as small as an ask game done wrong.
This happened with the Gilded Wolves discussion as well. Someone stepped in to say that the way Gilded Wolves coded its antagonists as this shady secret society of people was antisemitic, and everyone joined in to rip the book apart without having even read it. I joined in the conversation to state that I didn’t see it that way, since that shady antagonist group was very much coded as white Christians (their names are all French Christian names) and were colonizers (meaning making them this shadowy group of powerful and evil people was accurate) and one of the protagonists, who is Jewish, is opposing them and antisemitism is portrayed as horrible, and that the book had had (if I’m remembering correctly) Jewish sensitivity readers and multiple Jewish book reviewers really enjoyed and recommended it. Then Mina stepped in to say that multiple Jewish journals she followed rated the book highly and recommended it meaning the accusation of antisemitism clashed heavily with what a lot of other people thought, and that since me and the other person who was saying the book was antisemitic were the only ones who had read it or were familiar with it in any capacity, it wasn’t fair for everyone to be judging it like that. It was like she’d flipped a switch: people were suddenly much more “reasonable” and “fair” and willing to give the book a chance, just because she’d stepped in. (As a quick note, I don’t remember exactly whether Mina stepped in first or if I stated my opinion first. I also want to mention that Mina DMed me to state that the person who accused the book of antisemitism had expressed some Zionist sentiments in the past and to say that maybe their take on the book could have come from Islamophobia with them maybe assuming obviously ethnic name of the author was a Muslim name. The Zioinist stuff is something I can’t actually speak on since again, I have no access to the server anymore and I don’t remember that person’s url. This was the last time Mina DMed me or I her.)
I wrote all that out because I think it illustrates a few things. Firstly, a good example of the tendencies of people going with the flow of things even when it led to dogpiling/drastic conclusions. When I say they were really trashing that book, I mean it! Secondly, it demonstrates the willingness of everyone to go along with what Mina said. Third, it shows that Mina was capable of stepping in to prevent dogpiling (and, seemingly, she would, at least if her beliefs aligned with the opposite of whatever incited the dogpiling) and that people would listen to her and actually change their minds.
Whether or not Mina supported something was pretty important. Of course, it was her server, so she was definitely allowed to run it how she saw fit, but she would very swiftly pass judgement on things and everyone would just comply. One time, I think there were more than one different threads of conversation happening in the general channel of the server. Jess suggested making a second general channel to allow for other conversations, as is common in a lot of servers, including ones I’m in and moderate/own/have some power in. I don’t remember if I supported that suggestion or if I only backread that conversation, but I know at least one other person agreed. Mina said that as an older person (she’d very frequently bring up her age) she thought people could just wait for their turn in a conversation and didn’t even consider trying it out. Other mods, I believe, backed her up and said no to the second general conversation channel. I remember being a little confused as to why nobody even considered trying a member’s suggestion to make the server more easy to participate it and help provide additional structure/support how big it was, and why it was shut down because people could just wait for their turn, when clearly the general channel was getting overloaded before our eyes. But Mina didn’t see the need, so therefore nobody else wanted to do anything about it, and nobody ever mentioned it again, I think. I know this is a super minor instance lol, but I do think it illustrates something about the behavior in the server and how it was run. It’s not like other channels weren’t added based on need; one was created for the 2018 elections, one was created for talking about race in June during the height of BLM protests having news coverage, I’m pretty sure one was created for talking about the coronavirus. So, the mods were watching conversations and responding as they saw fit, they just wouldn’t field this request, for some reason. Obviously conversations getting muddled in a general channel isn’t as significant as major political events, antiblack racism, or a pandemic, but these channels were made to improve the server experience and likely to prevent these topics from completely overloading other channels, so, well.
Okay, the Castor/pilipalea stuff and dogpiling. I’ll say this stuff now because Castor has opened up about it (here [wayback machined] and here [archived in a google doc]), so I see that as permission for others to comment on it. If I’m remembering correctly and looking back at the right things, there was something about Mina giving advice on a grammatical error to one of her mutuals, or something asking if her mutuals wanted grammatical advice? Castor vagueblogged, presumably about that, and talked about classism in expecting good grammar from people, which is a valid issue, but seemed misapplied to this instance of someone consenting to receive advice on grammar/syntax/mechanics, if that’s what the vagueblogging was about. I reached out to Mina to let her know that I thought someone was vagueblogging about her, and she told me about past conflicts with Castor. I also reached out to Castor over DMs to ask what the vagueblogging was about, because you genuinely never know; classist prescriptivism is harmful and bad, and so many people on Tumblr are in so many different circles that similar topics may come up coincidentally. Castor wasn’t clear with me either about what the post was targeting and skirted around naming names.
At this point, looking back, it still seems to be that it was about Mina, especially considering that Castor had previous history with her and others in her circle. Mina was irritated by the vagueblogging (who likes being vagueblogged about?) and also informed me, all the way back in April 2019, about this past server drama that Castor mentioned. It seems to me that it stemmed from a misunderstanding: Mina and I believe other mods noticed another person using Castor’s PSDs without credit. Mina checked with Castor about whether people should be crediting them for PSDs and Castor said that, yes, they wanted credit; you can see this interaction in the screenshot Castor linked on their post.
This is where the accounts of what happened diverge: Mina expressed to me that she and the other mods weren’t very harsh since they’d seen that Castor’s friend had credited Castor in the past, so they just wanted to remind Castor’s friend to give credit, without knowing that Castor’s friend had permission to use the PSDs without crediting. I was told that Mina and the team of mods were professional in their handling of this; Castor has stated in their post that the group was extremely harsh. Since I don’t have any screenshots or exact records of what they said before I was in contact with Mina, I can’t comment, so I’ll withhold judgement on that. According to Mina, she and the other mods had not been very vocal about this crediting/PSD stuff, and very few people knew about it, so it did seem like Castor had attacked Mina out of nowhere.
What I can say is that the VV members were certainly quick to respond to the grammar vagueblog, and that if I’m remembering correctly, readily jumped to Mina’s defense. I distinctly remember that one VV member specifically asked whether it was about Mina in a reblog. This happened pretty early on in VV’s existence and I believe was the first major “drama” that VV got embroiled in. Looking back, I do think it was fair to be critical of Castor’s post. But this was also the first look at the tendencies people had of getting embroiled in the fervor of any perceived slight against a member (in particular Mina).
I noticed this again when I received anons that were sort of bitter about VV’s existence in May 2019, way before VV had gained the reputation that it has now. People were very quick to respond with hostility and slightly amplify the anger expressed by other members, and little by little things got really out of hand. I can totally understand being upset and irritated, since the asks were kind of unwarranted and the sender did apologize if I remember correctly. But there was a huge outpouring of vicious language from a lot of the members, and this was, I think, the first instance of proper dogpiling in VV, especially since it was an easy antagonist; the sender was out of line, and they were totally anonymous.
These were the only two instances of going to bat for VV that I ever participated in. For the other things, I either only backread or missed them completely. While they don’t really paint VV in a super bad light, not like the dogpiling of an eleven-year-old that Jess mentions in her post, it did give me a pretty good idea of how VV handled controversies.
I’ve mentioned some of my theories of why this dogpiling/toxicity happened. I’d also like to add that Mina would often send concise, decisively-worded statements about things. I think this may have come across as final-word judgments to a lot of people, so they would take that as the last say on a certain matter and escalate in severity of their response from there. And like, you should trust your friends and take what they say in good faith. But you still need to be thinking critically and considering your response, especially when you haven’t known someone for very long. And this, I think, was a big source of toxicity in the server. There were just so many people responding to the same issues and aligning their beliefs, and they’d build off each other and create an environment where these kinds of responses were okay. Plus, VV was always portrayed as a tight-knit family when not everyone knew each other and not everyone was active (as is totally normal for a massive server), so this also contributed to people wanting to defend each other all the time. And I don’t think the mod team did an adequate job of shutting it down, despite the veneer of a structured, sort of more “professional” space.
Okay, now onto the art stuff.
Disclaimer, I don’t draw digital or physical art. I was always aware that Mina was certainly at least using references for her work. In some cases I could even pinpoint which pictures were used, like one where the faceclaim was Ranveer Singh. I also received fanart of one of my characters that, of course, looked very similar to the faceclaim. It certainly was clear some tracing had happened in that picture because of the level of detail in the chikankari embroidery, but like…..it’s free fanart, chikankari isn’t copyrighted, and that embroidery is super difficult to draw anyways. What I was not aware of was Mina apparently tracing images and using them to advertise for commissions, which is something I do not condone. I also know my photography and photo editing tools, so I was aware that there was some filtering/editing going on. I’m not sure if Mina traced and didn’t disclose it for commissioned art.
Okay, now the server shutting down stuff!
I was completely unaware of the dogpiling/transphobia stuff happening in the server because I had it on mute. I only found out about all this two days ago. I received the message where everyone was @’ed about VV’s “migration” off Tumblr and that the server would be shut down. I can confirm that the concern was about mirror sites and that the server did discuss these mirror sites as a big intellectual property issue. I didn’t know people wanted the server shutting down to be kept so secret, and I honestly cannot think of a reason why; I feel like if those mirror site concerns were serious, people would be trying to spread the word on writeblr? So I think that people are right to be a little suspicious of the exact reason for the server’s closing.
I think I should mention also that people were pretty much always friendly with me on VV. I met a bunch of cool people, and Mina was always kind and supportive with me. @radley-writes has echoed similar sentiments here (wayback machined here) and here (wayback machined here) while being critical of the environment in VV.
I know this post is like, wildly long and probably quite dry and rambly at points, but I hope it does provide some specific examples to back up some of the criticisms of VV and document it a bit better.
Thank you for reading! I’ll make sure to edit this to add stuff if I remember things/see the need.
I also want to state that my post is more a critique of the environment than anything. I’m not trying to attack anyone at all, I’m just giving an account of stuff that has happened, my level of involvement, and my own thoughts on all this.
I also want to say that I am completely open to hearing what any of you have to say. Feel free to critique/discuss anything I’ve said in this post with me. If you want to vent about your experiences in/with Violet Vineyard, my inbox and DMs are totally open. If you want to keep things confidential, I won’t break your trust or reveal your identity (unless you start idk, spouting racist stuff at me or something). If you want to anonymously tell people about an experience, feel free to shoot me an anon.
I hope you’re all having a wonderful day! I’m sending you lots of love. Take care! <3

[INTERVIEW] An Interview With AleXa: Why This AI “Villain” Is Actually A Down-To-Earth Sweetheart
Tumblr media
What The Kpop recently had the opportunity to sit down with K-pop idol AleXa for an interview. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we held the interview via Zoom. However, even across the internet, AleXa’s warm personality shined through, charming our staff with her down-to-earth way of speaking and thoughtful answers.
The popular solo artist will soon be releasing a new track entitled “Rule The World” on September 4th. The song is a collaboration with gaming music star TheFatRat. In addition, she has confirmed her comeback for October, making fans excited for the news that her title track will be produced by famous hitmakers LDN Noise.
Before her new releases, however, get to know more about this talented artist by reading our interview below! From her tastes in anime to which female role models helped form her into such a strong woman today, read below for questions that she’s never been asked before.
WTK: Hi, AleXa! My name is Amy, and I’m from What The Kpop. First of all, I just thank you for meeting with us today. I know that you’ve got a busy schedule, so I’m glad that you were able to take a few minutes to speak with us.
AleXa: Oh, you’re very welcome.
WTK: Before you were actually a K-pop idol yourself, you did so many different things! You’ve done cosplay in the past, you’ve done voice acting, you’ve been on shows where you tried out for different things, you’ve taken part in long training, etc… all leading up to this point in your career. So, first of all, just to get things started, can I ask you what’s been your favorite part of the journey so far?
AleXa: Let’s see. I mean, from way back until now, I think the thing that I liked the most about my journey is not just one thing. Since it’s still ongoing, it’s just the fact that I get to see myself improve, that’s the thing. So, improvement for me is probably the thing that I really enjoy about this process.
WTK: Since your debut, you have had quite an unusual concept. For those that don’t know, it’s about a multiverse and you’ve had a trilogy of songs: “Bomb,” “Do or Die,” and “Villain.” You’re avatar or AI escapes into a physical body and then goes into the real world, right? We know this suits you really well since you’re a fan of dark concepts and horror and science fiction. So, if this were to ever happen to you in real life and you became an AI, whose body would you want to take over?
AleXa: Dwayne the Rock Johnson! (laughs) Because I just want to be the Rock! I mean, who doesn’t want to be the Rock? (laughs again) So, definitely Dwayne the Rock Johnson! Yeah!
WTK: When we watched the making video for your recent “Villain” MV, we saw you doing the Naruto run and already knew that you’re into anime. I know your schedule probably doesn’t allow you too much time anymore, but are there any animes that you’re into recently? Or are there ones that you’d like to recommend for your fans to watch?
AleXa: I haven’t watched anything recently. The most recent thing I watched was the anime adaptation of some of Junji Ito’s work. If you didn’t know, his collections were turned into an anime. If you like horror, I recommend that. But one of my all-time, go-to shows is always “Death Note” or “Full Metal Alchemist.” So, those are ones I wouldn’t mind re-watching again if I find time.
WTK: Your fans, or AI troopers as they’re called, refer to your music as a cultural reset when it comes to how you’ve changed the game. For you, which artist or even what genre was the cultural reset in your own life?
AleXa: I feel like without a doubt I do have to say K-pop was the cultural reset for me. Had I not stumbled into K-pop, I wouldn’t be doing what I am now. Then there was someone also like SHINee. They’ve been a pivotal group, a pivotal senior for me in my career. So, they were my cultural reset.
WTK: Apart from SHINee, I know that you also got into K-pop after hearing artists like Super Junior. Going from a K-pop fan to a K-pop idol yourself, what has the experience been like? Is is still kind of surreal for you or how would you describe the experience?
AleXa: Oh man, it’s definitely surreal! I never thought that in my wildest dreams I would find myself being an idol for my career. Being able to stand on the same stage in music shows as so many wonderful and talented seniors… like it’s incredible. It’s definitely been very surreal for me thus far.
WTK: Recently, you held your own virtual concert, and you also opened the show for IN2IT in India. How did the two experiences differ as far as opening for one group versus having your own concert? Did it affect you that your first solo concert was a virtual concert? If so, what were some of those challenges like?
AleXa: I mean, it definitely is very different having my own concert versus opening up for a senior group. I will say that being able to open up for their concert two times was a really good experience because I learned crowd management. Also, I learned how to feed off of people’s energy for the concert performance. Then when it comes to my own solo concert, even though it was digital, I could still feel everyone’s love and support through the comments because there was a live monitor where I could read all the comments in real time. So, even though there weren’t people there in person, I still felt the presence of them. I’m an extrovert and I’m someone that draws energy from other people. So, virtual concert or online concert, it’s just both a really fun experience for me.
WTK: So many people did tune into your concert, and I know that a lot of people were leaving comments also, so it was a great success! Do you feel like from here on out that online concerts are going to be more of a staple in K-pop, even once things like COVID-19 slows down and things are as back to normal as possible? Are virtual concerts here to stay?
AleXa: However fast the pandemic does come to an end, I do feel like online concerts, online fan meetings, and everything else that’s been happening in the industry during this time is something that is here to stay. Because you never know what could happen in the future. So, I believe everybody learning the ways of online concerts, the data, the statistics, the reactions, how fans work.. I think it’s something we’re going to wind up keeping in the future.
WTK: You exude this natural charm, charisma and confidence. So, what would you say to younger fans, especially those who are coming up and trying to find their own persona and sense of self confidence? How did you become who you are today and grow into this confident young woman that we know as the singer AleXa?
AleXa: Thank you for that. Let’s see. I don’t know. I would just say, don’t get lost in the crowd I guess. People will always find ways to try to belittle you for ways that you’re different, for ways that you stick out. But embrace those and make those your strong points. Don’t let anybody try to define you as a person. You alone can define yourself. So yeah, take comfort and joy and pride in your individuality.
WTK: Now, I don’t know if you’re familiar much with the Reddit sub-threads for K-pop, but ever since the music video for “Villain” dropped, your fans have been busy analyzing the trilogy and making all these theories about the Alexa universe. I don’t know if you’ve read any of these online, but there is a really popular thread on Reddit and also one on Twitter about the Alexa universe. The summary is that they believe there are different versions of AleXa and that she embodies the different human emotions that each AI version has discovered. What do you say to all of that? Can you give us any hints or have you been able to read any of these fan theories yourself?
AleXa: I mean, I’ve dabbled a bit here and there on Twitter. I’ve been looking at a lot of tweets, and I read the comments. There’s some interesting theories. I mean, when we go into these comebacks and pre-releases and stuff, we know the plot. We know what we’re trying to get into. But then whenever I’m with my staff, we read things in the comments. We’re like, “Oh, well, that’s an interesting take on why we thought of that.” But it’s really cool to see how how imaginative and smart and observant everyone is. Because they catch and piece things together. And I’m like, yes! Those are my smart, beautiful fans! Yes!
WTK: Coming from your label, which is a video production company, have there ever been things that your fans noticed about the videos that maybe you didn’t even notice yourself at the time?
AleXa: Oh, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some comments noting some things and seeing the background or like they’ll think a certain layer goes with a certain thing. I will say though, this is not something we intended for, but with the release of “Villain”— of course, we do have a small, kind of floating, pyramid-looking thing at the end, and I do this [thing] with my hands. But it’s kind of funny because some people thought we were alluding to the fact that we are a part of the Illuminati! But we are not. (laughs)
WTK: Yes, just to make that clarification! (laughs) So your music, like we said, features the image of this strong, independent woman where you are like cyborg, pop, diva (and we love it, by the way). When you were growing up, did you have many strong female role models? Who inspired you?
AleXa: If we’re talking about strong females, then of course, one pivotal character has been my mother. She is honestly one of the strongest women I know. If we’re talking in an artistry sense, since my parents raised me on older music, then people like Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, and Whitney Houston. Into the more modern age and as I was starting to grow up a bit, then Rhianna, Brittany, Christina. This is the kind of aura of artists and people that I really looked up to and enjoyed their work.
WTK: If you were ever able to branch out— maybe not on your main comebacks but for special songs or covers— are the genres of music from the artists you just mentioned something you would like to dabble in? Or is there any other type of music that you would like to try for something different?
AleXa: I mean any opportunity I would be given to branch out and just try something that I’ve never done before, I want to try of course. I would love to take the bull by the horns and just go at it! So, whatever and whenever those opportunities arise, yes definitely.
WTK: We know that you have like a “sad boi” playlist when you’re feeling down. When you’re feeling happy or pumped up, however, what do you like to listen to?
AleXa: If I’m having a good mood and I’m just going for a walk or something, I listen to lot of Queen, Fleetwood Mac, some Dolly Parton. Believe it or not, Dolly Parton is the only country artist I will make an excuse to listen to.
WTK: Well, she’s one of the ultimate divas herself so…
AleXa: She really is, she really is! But I don’t know… just kind of like older pop I guess, without all this like synth and heavy bass we have now. Just old style pop music, I guess, is kind of my music sphere.
WTK: I know also that you were a musical major in college, and I am a huge fan of musicals myself. So, I have to know something! Musicals are so popular in Korea, and it’s a big scene there. So, if you ever got the chance and you could work in a musical there, is there a specific musical that you would want to be cast in?
AleXa: A lot! But if I could be cast in any musical I wanted, I think it’d be fun to try Maureen from Rent or Veronica in Heathers. I feel like these both are fun roles [and I’d like] to give it a go.
WTK: One more question! Fans really enjoyed hearing the lyrics you wrote for your last song and are looking forward to hearing more of your work in the future. We know all songwriters have lyrics written in journals, so if you have any saved, do you mind sharing a previously unreleased lyrics with our readers? Just something that you haven’t yet shared with the world?
AleXa: Sure! I mean, I am one of those people that has journals upon journals upon journals of song lyrics. I keep them in my phone as well too actually. If I were to share something real quick, right off the bat, what would it be? What would it be? What would it be? (laughs while looking through phone) See! There’s a lot in here. Yes, yes, yes. Doot, doot, doot, doot. (laughs again) Oh, I don’t know. These are all just kind of… deep. Let’s see. Ok, I’m just going to read these two lines. It’s just something I wrote once. ‘Do I have to rearrange the stars and have them spell our names in the sky?’ That’s it. (smiles)
WTK: Thank you, AleXa! We look forward to hearing how you will use that in a song one day, and we look forward to hearing more from you in both your music and your lyrics too! Before we go, do you have any last words to people that might be reading about you for the first time, as well as to fans that have been with you since the beginning of the journey?
AleXa: Sure! Whether you’ve been with me for a day, an hour, or five minutes, or five years, thank you so much for staying by my side throughout this wild roller coaster journey that has been my career thus far! And I promise to keep working super hard to become a better artist and a better person that you can enjoy in the future. Thank you so much. I love you!

Unpopular Kpop Industry Opinions
While everyone is probably waiting for me to write something for one of my stories, I wrote this because they are being heavily edited and I felt like it. Also people keep messaging or commenting on my stories with some of these things and now I’m setting them straight on how I feel. It’s unlikely that someone will change my mind, but you can try.
 1.  It’s okay to not like a person in a group or only like one member.
It’s a controversial opinion because we all want to believe in the unity of a group and people have begun to shame solo stans and call them out for being problematic. However, the reality is no one is going to like everyone, so why should someone have to like every single member of a group. Everyone is saying solo stans destroy a group, but it’s not people who solo stan idols, but people who in general hate on idols within the group. There are idols who get involved constantly in scandals or can just be plain uninteresting to people. No one should be forced to full heartedly support every member in a group. People like what they like. That being said those people who only like one member should be aware that when supporting the one member they like, they’re probably supporting the rest of the group as well.
 2.  Being an idol should be a job and not a lifestyle
So this one is a bit hard to explain, but I’ll do my best. When someone becomes an idol they give up a lot of different things from the ability to date someone to higher education opportunities. That being said I don’t think they should have to give up certain things like dating. However, they do, to an extent, have to please their fans and give up some of their privacy. NOT ALL of their privacy but SOME. Look at the early BTS logs where they gave fans a small peak into their dorm life, I’m talking that type of privacy. They should not be followed, their family members should not be followed, and their significant others should be left alone by the public.
However, Idols need to realize that when they choose to reveal parts of their private life they can have backlash that is justifiable. For example, D.O. choosing to enter the army. He handled it in a smart professional way where he let SM release and official statement after it was discovered that he had submitted for military service. A bad example would be Sulli for posting a picture on vacation during the middle of Red Light promotions, despite both her and SM making a statement that she was sick. While she is entitled to a mental health holiday it was dumb to post a picture or let a picture be posted. Her job was to be an idol and promote with f(x), but it looked really bad when she was at the beach having fun while the other members were all at music show recordings. Especially when later Krystal ended up fainting from overworking during the same time period. She was dealing with a lot of scandals at the time, but it’s not really an excuse. Look at it this way, if you called in sick for work during an important time, where it’s busy and were friends with your boss and coworkers on social media, you wouldn’t post about how much fun you’re having at the beach.
It is an idol’s job to maintain their image, but they’re people as well.
 3.  Hyuna made the right choice by revealing her relationship with E-Dawn even though Cube denied it
This was a huge issue at the time and it basically blew every other thing currently happening in the Kpop world away when they two came forward with their relationship while their company denied it. One of the issues it also blew away was the fact that the entire Kpop community online was referring to Hyuna as a sexual predator for the way that she was interacting with E-Dawn with petitions popping up to have her charged with sexual harassment and kicked out of Cube. All this was happening during the time that #Metoo entered South Korea, so many people became invested in Hyuna and E-Dawn before they were even officially announced for the fact that many believed Hyuna was getting away with harassing him.
At that point in time it would be unknown if Pentagon was going to continue to thrive after Shine, but one thing was certain was that if they didn’t confirm the relationship Hyuna’s career would be over and she would be labeled as a sexual predator. The two of them announcing the relationship saved Hyuna’s career. In all honesty, Hyuna is an amazing dancer and idol, however, she’s just an idol. While her image is seen as sexy and raunchy at times it’s not criminal and she needed to maintain it if she wanted to keep making money. When looking at E-Dawn there’s no denying he has talent, but Hyuna has been a part of the industry for so long that there’s no denying her career was worth more sentimentally to a lot of fans and quantitatively when it comes to income.
I believe the two of them were smart enough to know that Hyuna could get picked up by another company. I also think they were smart enough to know that eventually when everything died down E-Dawn would probably be able to work as a producer or composer, even if he never got to perform on stage. If the two had not revealed their relationship pentagon would have still lost a lot of popularity due to the multiple dating scandals popping up and Hyuna probably wouldn’t have a career at all.
 4.  Twice is currently the only girl group from the big 3 companies that is actually interesting to WATCH
So in all honesty Twice isn’t really my thing, but I’m honestly a little sick of people hating on them and saying that Red Velvet and BlackPink are more talented. In all honesty, all 3 groups are talented. However, Twice seems to be the only group that has consistent stage presence and chemistry compared to the other two. Not to mention JYP has done an incredible job in styling them different for each concept and also changing up choreography and choreographers to make sure that each individual release isn’t the same. I think SM does a pretty good job with this when it comes to music videos and MVs, but when it comes to stage performances I don’t think they change it up that often. I also think one of the reasons that Bad Boy did so well was because it was truly different from everything they had done at that point. Also, sometimes the Red Velvet members don’t seem to mesh well together or look uncomfortable on stage. Part of it comes down to styling because both Irene and Joy were forced to wear revealing clothing that made it hard to do choreography wise. However, sometimes they just give lack luster performances though when it comes to stages, especially when compared with the other groups in their company that have great chemistry and stand out performances. That’s not to say they don’t have some absolutely phenomenal performances, but it’s sort of left up to chance. When it comes to BlackPink… Everything except for Stay is the same. The concept the style and even the choreographies and formations are the same and maybe they’re slightly elevated but not by much. A lot of choreography for BlackPink is done by the same choreographer and he has a tendency to use the same planes of motion when choregraphing for them and it’s starting to show. I also think this comes from there always being such a quick release for BlackPink, so not much time is given for the members of the team to prepare something new, so they use old concepts and things they know will look decent on stage. I also think that a lot of BlackPink’s music sounds the same and I also think that’s due to them rushing out what they know will sell.
I just want to make it clear that all these groups have decent music. It’s just that you know you’ll get a good live performance (styling, choregraphy, and stage presence) from Twice, you can get some but not consistent lives from Red Velvet, and you’re getting almost the same performance from BlackPink. Not that BlackPink’s performances are bad, but it just feels like I may have seen it before.
 5.  Kpop fans need to get over it when someone says something negative about their groups in Western Media
So the main thing to note is I said negative, not racist. If someone says something racist it needs to be called out. However, when I think of this topic I think of Monbebe’s and Monsta X and NCT. I’m not going to lie I roll my eyes every time an interviewer asks these two groups about BTS, but I can also recognize that BTS is now what most people recognize as Kpop so the comparison is expected. I also even understand stupid comments like “I’ve never heard of them before”. It’s a fact that the larger world hasn’t heard of these groups. They’re allowed to dislike these groups and their music and make these comments because it’s their opinions, but fans can’t sit there and demand an apology from every person who makes a negative comment. It makes the larger Kpop fandom look bad as well as makes things more difficult for the groups. Western media does not operate on the same politeness that Korean media does, and fans need to recognize that. When they demand apologies for every little thing it makes people hesitant to work with Kpop groups in the future for fear of backlash and also may attract people who know they can draw attention to themselves by making fun of these groups and upsetting their fans. Neither is a good thing for Kpop groups.
 6.  Idols from the top 3 companies aren’t the most talented they’re the most marketable
So I’m not saying that groups from the big three companies aren’t talented because that’s just a straight up lie. Some of the biggest legends in Kpop come from the big three. When I started Kpop the joke was SM was 100% looks, YG was 20% looks 80% talent, and JYP was 100% talent. I sort of laughed at that then because I didn’t really believe it because of the groups in the companies. At the time Big Bang, Girls Generation, Miss A, 2Ne1, Shinee, and 2PM were super popular and all of these groups had undeniable talented, even though there are members of some of those groups that were put there just for looks all members could at least sing, dance, or rap(to a tolerable level). However, now I feel like the groups from the big three are lack luster. That could be because smaller companies have gotten better at promoting their idols, but I also think it’s because fans of kpop are more aware of marketing tactics. Idols get selected for groups because companies know they will sell not because they will be really talented. Take Irene for example, who is not particularly good at anything, but is exceptionally beautiful and an all around lovely human being. She was put there to draw attention for her looks not because she’s talented. Twice is another good example, when you look at the show they came from their were plenty of trainees who were eliminated who were as talented or more talented than the members when they first debuted. However, they were some of the more pretty and polished members as well as being high ranked on the fan voting. They literally added Tzuyu because they knew people would buy things with her face on it. At the end of the day although most people see kpop as music it’s a music industry and meant to make money. That means that people who will make these companies money get to debut. Part of the thing that attracts fans unfortunately is beauty and that probably won’t change anytime soon.
 7.  A visual position is one of the dumbest things to ever exist, but it will never disappear because of South Korea’s opinion on beauty.
I mean I had heard about how much appearances in South Korea mattered, but I don’t think it ever sank in how much they mattered in South Korea until I lived here. From mirrors literally everywhere (that people will stop to actually use) to how insanely young girls start dieting (Literally my 3rd grade student). Appearances matter here and will get you attention or completely shunned. I think it’s stupid that incredibly talented people will never get to debut because they don’t have the looks of an artist whether that be an idol or something else in this country. However, it’s never going to change. It’s something quintessential to kpop emphasis on the K for Korean, so it’s up to Korea if they want to change that and I don’t think they do.

Tumblr media
well hello !! you just saw me yesterday, but this time i’m coming at you with my second muse !! now look - i told myself i wasn’t going to have two, but he came to my mind after creating chunja and i loved them both too much to choose !! so without further ado, i present to you my complete opposite actual baby zachary “zack” choi !! he’s in kdi & has way too much going on. but anyways you can click here for his profile, and under the cut is some info on him, i tried to make his shorter, i swear !! and i forgot to say on her’s, but like this if you’re interested in some plotting !! i can’t wait to interact with you all.~
his full name is zachary taeho choi, taeho being his korean/middle name ! but he hates zachary because it’s so formal and he definitely is not - so zack is both his stage name and preferred name since practically...always !!
so !! his story actually begins in la, california. his parents split shortly after he was born so while he sees his dad from time to time, his mom has been the main one supporting him both financially & emotionally, so she’s really his only active parental figure ??
this is a big reason why he’s so maternal and emotionally transparent ?? the toxic masculinity just didn’t pass over to him bc his mom always taught him how to be in tune with his emotions, embrace them, and just to care for everyone freely !! which is a big reason why he’s so affectionate now.
he’s a second gen korean american and was raised by a pretty american mom !! his parents never learned korean and therefore didn’t teach him, which is why he struggled so much to adjust when he got here !
also the only child, so if you wonder why he’s always so eager around the kdi boys and referring to them as his brothers - there you go !! he always wanted siblings !!
totally irrelevant fact but he was such a skater boi back in la and will kill for a chance to show some of his tricks nowadays !! he’s just like....begging someone to ask him to skate lmao !! but since he doesn’t really have the chance now he just rolls around in his hoverboard because he is a legitimate child !
but look - this boy has aaaalways loved to rap and sing. way before so!ar, kdi, any of it ! his mom loves music too, and he grew up surrounded by it in la, so quickly grew attached to it ! also loves attention, which just meant he was a little performing machine wherever he meant !! i’m saying dancing down the grocery aisles at five years old to grocery store music type of extra everyone
but his interest for kpop didn’t really peak until later on ! he tried out for a middle through high performing arts school when he got to the 6th grade ! fun fact he performed look at me now and they thought he was a joke rip...but what got him in was singing stereo hearts !! don’t you love the early 2010s everyone
anyways he got in for singing !! and there was just like ... a wave of kpop stans wanting to be like idols there !! at first he was really put off & a little weirded out because he’d never been into it but !!
for a showcase these girls performed a kpop song ( the boys if you were curious sksk ) and baam !! he went down this endless kpop rabbit hole which hasn’t ended to this day.
so he basically his love for kpop transferred into his love for korean culture ! he wanted to know more about his origins, so got into the language, history & all that. so around this time was when he contemplated traveling to the country ! but never expected to move there, or anything.
it was only right before christmas of his junior year did things start to change !! news about online video auditions for so!ar spread in his school like a w i l d f i r e. but zack really knew he wasn’t that good of a singer in comparison to his other classmates, and didn’t expect anything out of it !! but he did feel a lot more comfortable in his rap skills, so took a risk and rapped as his primary skill !
so you could imagine this boy was...confused af when he got called back !! he hadn’t even told his mom about it, or really anyone so that they wouldn’t get their hopes up. he hadn’t expected for it to go anywhere and now that it had...he didn’t really know what to do !
but when he eventually got around to telling is mom ?? she was soso excited !! she was basically .... a failed musician as a teen sksks, so she was happy to see her son have a real shot at fame. so zack was kind of like - wait slow down what’s going on ?? but she was like book the flight to korea !! right now !!
initially, the plan was for him to go for his in-person audition then spend the rest of winter break in korea with his mom, but that didn’t really work because he was chosen & given the shot to train as long as he could start right away ! he ... hadn’t expected to make it that far at all and was really at a loss of what to do since he had a whole life in la !
but after talking to his mom for a bit, she basically told him the story of how she missed out on opportunities & felt unfulfilled, so at a point he was kind of just like fine !! let’s do it !! and started the move there.
everything was fine at first - he got enrolled in a korean school, he was having fun working toward his dream, and his mom was staying nearby in an air bnb, but the move was temporary, and after a month she had to return to the states. that was when things got really hard, and really real for zack. he was only 15 at the time, barely knew any of the language, and his only family were aunts and uncles he’d barely met. it was a really rough patch in his move & probably when he was visibly the saddest !!
def considered moving back many times at this point to just feel happy again, since he had such an attachment to his old life !! but the friends he’d made made things a lot easier !
at first when he was placed in kdi he didn’t know what to expect - they had this delinquent type image to them, and zack being the babiest person ever didn’t know if he could fit it !!
and at first, he was really awkward, trying to work as well in the rougher concepts as he did the cute ones. but nowadays he’s gotten a lot better and his rap skills have helped a lot with him gaining duality, something he’s now known for !!
now for some tidbits on him !!
he’s got two fan nicknames - the meme king, which he technically gave himself on a vlive because this toddler will not stop referencing memes & vines !! and the last is zenergy, because he’s always at two extremes - either passed out sleep on the couch, or up and bouncing off the walls !! there’s no in between !!
suuuper affectionate !! sometimes it can come off as overbearing but i swear he means well. he just got a lot of love during his childhood and feels like he should pass it on !! like if someone’s teasing and is like “awww you love me !!” he’s like “yeah of course ??” also means he depends on people a lot for attention & overall validation ! just.... a whole softie when it comes to that okay
also i must mention he willingly ships himself with everyone ??
but on the other hand, a very closeted very shy/panicked bi !! like if he thinks a guy’s being serious and flirting with him ? he will freeze ! he’s just not used to the idea & just really is figuring his feelings out. but he stays having unexpected crushes because he’s a lovebug so oh well ! this is something he’ll probably struggle with for a bit, but that’s what development’s for, folks !
a whole ass momma’s boy ! he loves her with his whole heart, especially since she sees how hard she worked to support the two of them ! he has a rough time being away from her, but you can catch him facetiming her everyday !!
also v chivalrous ?? his mom would beat his ass if he didn’t use manners so you can catch him opening doors, pulling chairs back for people, all that ! a lot of people seem to think that’s all fanservice but no...he literally Cannot not do it !!
oh and his duality is a little shocking ?? but like i said before, it’s been something he’s had to work on. he struggled a lot at first especially since his korean pronunciation wasn’t up there, so it was hard for him not to be so focused on that ! but now that he’s more confident in his skills it’s easier to play up their concepts for cameras, so he can definitely switch it up for cameras nowadays ! but...turn them off and he’s a baby lamb all over again everyone
he can be very lazy ! has all the ambition but none of the energy. if he doesn’t want to do something, he can put up a whole fit about it, so kdi members beware !! just put him in his place, he’ll get over it sksksk
relating to that, he respects his kdi hyungs a lot !! you have to remember he was a true baby when he came to korea to train, so he depended on them & other trainees a lot. he hasn’t forgot that and nowadays would do anything for them ! therefore takes their opinions very seriously and is just...a baby around them !
but @ the future kdi maknae: he may swear he’s baby, but he also swears you’re his child !!
a major kpop stan nowadays !! like past him wouldn’t believe it ?? a huge gg stan especially, and he’s learning all the new dances everyday !!
still in the honeymoon phase lowkey...? like he can’t even believe he’s famous !! it still comes as a shock for him, and therefore he reacts to nearly all “omg you’re so famous i love you !!” fans with a “thanks ig?? i’m literally just zack but ok”
he does want to explore other entertainment fields eventually, especially variety & music production !!
also remember how i said he loves vines ?? yeah my ask message on the main wasn’t for nothing ! he reenacts the zack stop vine nearly everyday folks
alright this is long let’s move to wanted connections ! i think that’s all anyways ?? if not i’ll add more later ! but for now, let’s go !!
wanted connections
best friends !! please give zack someone stupid to act out with ok
someone who helped him adjust to korea when he first got here & took him under their wing !! maybe they’ve developed a sibling type relationship ?
a grumpy muse who he’s always trying to cheer up & make happy !
maybe another foreign muse to share his stuggles with ?? i don’t know if there are other la muses but if so childhood friends are an option !
he would 100% goof off with all the staff so whenever they get some staff he’d love to get kdi into some mess with them !
the one person who he just really doesn’t like ??
cute little crushes !!
language exchange buddies ?? it doesn’t have to be just korean !
someone he really looks up to & adores !!
a partner in crime - they’re always sneaking out the dorm, going thrill seeking and just having fun together !
frenemies !!
i’ll add more as i think of it !

i feel like a lot of ppl on this site see a callout post for BTS, look at all of the problematic things they did in the past, and immediately ‘cancel’ them or see that as a valid reason to finally hate them or kpop in general, without considering the context of the situations or how the kpop industry works.
im definitely not here to defend the things they said or did, because it WAS gross. but those things are also from 3-5 years ago, have apologized for or had no control over whether it happened or not.
this post serves as a ‘clearing their name’ type of post, and will actually take a look into the problematic things theyve done and how they dealt with it, along with all the positive things they have done in the past few years. it will be pretty lengthy and will have lots of sources/screenshots. before i get into this though, i want to say that no one is obligated to like BTS, or forgive them for what they/their label did. you reserve the right to feel the way you feel, however that may be. that being said, this post is for people who never saw the apologies, who vaguely know who BTS are and saw only bad things about them, who want to get into BTS but aren’t sure if they’re extremely problematic, and more.
starting off, i want to explain the context behind the links of this post. i would link the original, but op has deleted it. so, obviously, yes bts did do all of the above. but like i said before, it was 3-5 (now, technically 6) years ago. when BTS debuted in 2013, they were all 21 or under. 15-16 year old Jungkook being the youngest, and Seokjin being the oldest at 21. they were merely teenagers and on top of this, had no or very little control of their self image. the hairstyles & photoshoots, the boys had no control over. bighit and bts’ stylists are in charge of these things. if you want someone to be angry at, be angry at bighit, bts’ label company. this includes RM’s hairstyle back in the ‘No More Dream’ era / early debut days, Suga’s dreads, and any other hairstyle, clothing, or photoshoot that caused controversy. (in case anyone, who isn’t familiar with kpop, is confused; kpop label companies usually control everything their idols do. from what they wear, to what their songs are about, to if they’re even allowed to date. it’s a very disgusting industry that has a history of abuse, but that’s an entirely different subject i could get into.)
here is an article where BigHit apologizes for the antisemitism + the ‘bombing’ shirt Jimin wore, and they explicitly state that “the band members were ‘in no way responsible’ for the controversy.” which further proves my point that the boys had no control over what they wore/how they looked.
here is a thread about RM’s racist behavior in the past, and admitting + apologizing for what he did, including how he has changed certain lyrics of songs because they could be seen as (or were) misogynist. to this day, RM hates and regrets how his hair looked at the time.
in case anyone doesn’t want to read the entire thread, RM says this: “As I went through the year 2016 I came to think about that. My words or behaviors, regardless of my intentions, could cause troubles or hurt others feelings. In the process, I thought I need to hold responsibility for that and I need to think about such things. What I said or did would not be undone. I thought so. Then I learned how to admit myself. [...] Anyways, to become a better person, I need to hold responsibility for what I do. I need to change my mindset. I need to change my way of thinking if it’s wrong. I learned I need to hear from many people. I mean, I came to think like that. Now when I do something, I think, ‘how would people feel about my act?’”
again, this is not excuses for what they did, but rather how/why it happened or how they had no choice in the matter & what they had to say about it afterwards. BTS are living, growing people who have acknowledged their mistakes and apologized. in RM’s speech at the U.N. he says this: “Maybe I made a mistake yesterday, but yesterday’s me is still me. I am who I am today, with all my faults. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser, and that’s me, too. These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life. I have come to love myself for who I was, who I am, and who I hope to become.”
since the apology part of this post is mostly over, i wanted to talk about the good things that bts has done in the past few years. things like their continuous support of the LGBT community, the powerful messages in their music, the bending of the ‘typical kpop style’, etc.
-
over the years and as their popularity grew, BTS have actually managed to seemingly take more control over what they stand for and how they present themselves and their music. since around 2017, BTS have made a very impactful social stance with their string of albums & their concept: “Love Yourself”. for people who don’t know, this concept consists of three albums over the course of 2016-2018 and are in order as follows: LOVE YOURSELF 承 'Her', LOVE YOURSELF 轉 'Tear' LOVE YOURSELF 結 'Answer'
the summarized version of the stories are love at first sight, the failing/one-sided-ness of said love, and then learning how to love and accept yourself before you are fully able to love others. along with this concept came the partnership with the anti-violence campaign, UNICEF, who work to protect young people from all over the world. the entire album concept consistently promotes self-love and acceptance, something that is not very explored in kpop or even western pop music in general. while some of the songs in “LY: Her” use female pronouns, almost all the rest of them across all the albums use gender neutral or no pronouns. this was done intentionally by RM (who writes/produces a majority of their songs), as he believes “feelings/love transcend genders, cultures, and barriers between people.” the title song of “LY: Her”, “DNA”, (as stated in the screenshot) further expresses this idea with the lyrics: “None of this is a coincidence Because we’re the two who found our destiny - I only focus on you You steer me a little harder The DNA of the genesis wants you This is inevitable, I love us We are the only true lovers”
and in “Serendipity”, as well:
“The universe has moved for us Without missing a single thing Our happiness was meant to be Cuz you love me, and I love you”
while, obviously, there is one ‘her’ pronoun in the song, most of it expresses what RM says. and bighit being bighit, im sure they had some say in how the lyrics were presented, esp since it was the title song. what i’m trying to say is that i truly believe BTS are doing their best to support the lgbt community, even with the tight restrictions that their label and the kpop genre puts on them. being on the topic of LGBT+ and support of the community, here is suga pretty much saying he’s bi. + and of course, his iconic lyrics in “Cypher Pt.3″
here is the bisexual flag colors in j-hope’s music video for his song “Daydream”.
RM saying he liked “Same Love” twice as much after reading about the lyrics, and Suga outright saying “Nothing is wrong. Everyone is equal.” in the first screenshot.
Jungkook’s love and support for troye sivan + Jimin wearing jeans with lyrics of troye sivan’s “Youth” on them
bts defying gender norms over and over and over.
fondness & friendship with/of multiple lgbt artists
RM referencing the film “Moonlight” in the song “4 O’Clock”
RM wrote the lyrics for GLAM’s song “XXO”,  that say “Are you a boy? Girl? I don’t care, passion is the key”
Jungkook and Jimin covering the song “We Don’t Talk Anymore” and not changing the pronouns.
an excerpt from RM’s speech at the U.N. ;  “Tell me your story. I want to hear your voice, and I want to hear your conviction. No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin color, gender identity: speak yourself.” + full transcript here.
and these are just things i can think of off the top of my head. as for their political stance and social messages in their music, & talking about other things considered taboo in kpop (such as mental health/illness), here you go:
-
suga talking about (his) mental health and struggles in various songs on his mixtape.
their ENTIRE “IDOL” music video is basically a response to how people stereotype them/the kpop genre & have said that they are “too westernized”. the song includes a “traditional African-Korean sound”, the boys wearing hanboks/traditional korean clothing, on top of lots of korean history references & symbolism, and how they take pride in what they do. here is a really good video analyzing & explaining the mv. heres 3 more posts explaining why it sounds/looks the way it does, and how BTS did it intentionally. in case nobody has seen/heard the song, here is the first verse: “You can call me artist (artist) You can call me idol (idol) No matter what you call me I don’t care I’m proud of it”
the song “Epiphany” on “LY: Answer”, is (as you can imagine) a song about having an epiphany about loving yourself. the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. the chorus: “I’m the one I should love in this world Shining me, precious soul of mine I finally realized so I love me Not so perfect but so beautiful I’m the one I should love”
RM talking about his mental health/depression in “Forever Rain” on his mixtape “mono.” + as well as in “Reflection.” the outro of the song which i wanted to add, is just a repeated “I wish I could love myself.”
the lyrics to the song “I’m Fine” on LY: Answer express being able to love yourself without relying on somebody to fix you or make you happier, because only you can complete yourself.
the outro to the album, “Answer: Love Myself” concludes the Love Yourself album series, and has extremely beautiful lyrics. the full translation here, if anyone wants to read all of them. it’s about, as im sure you can guess, loving yourself even with all your flaws and mistakes & striving to be a better person each day.
-
SO TLDR; BTS absolutely have made mistakes, like every person does, but have apologized and learned from those mistakes. they have moved on, and have done more good in this world than bad. they have grown over the past 6 years and continue to grow every single day. as a young gay fan, their message and their presence means a lot to me. that fact that they’re so popular and use that power to spread kindness & self-acceptance (no matter Who you are), is really important especially in today’s society. doubly to youth who, themselves, struggle with mental illness and family issues, school/education, and any typical problem young people face in their lives. i have struggled with self-hate, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, trauma, the whole ordeal. their songs have helped me heal, even if only a little. and they give me another reason to keep going everyday. even if you don’t like their music or the boys themselves, there is no denying the positive impact they’ve made on millions of people, adults and children alike. BTS are absolutely not perfect, but they acknowledge this and do their best to BE the best they can be.

Anonymous said: let me just say I love the kpop references like the Minnie hair cause  kpop is my spirit animal but anyways I love you
yasssss
Anonymous said: f(x)?🧡💛
yeah i went to the funeral, what about it?
Anonymous said: So I just watched your speed mesh video and found myself wondering, what is the purpose of using edge split? I'm currently learning blender and though I've googled for various explanations, I'm unsure of what it achieves in terms of TS4 meshing.
sometimes when you remove doubles from the entire mesh, it makes weird shadows (you can see them in solid mode) that are super dark. Edge splitting gets rid of them without causing a seam to show in the mesh
Anonymous said: Wow, I've never sent an ask to you but I thought I'd just send some love your way! Your an amazing creator and I love that you take your time with each one of your creations. I love your edits and they inspire me to do better with mine! I love that you not only do straight hair but also curly, wavy and braided hair! Your sims are so beautiful and so are you! I always look forward to your cc too! :) Hope you have a great day/night!
thank you so so so much omfg i really appreciate it!!!
Anonymous said: hope this doesn’t sound rude, but why don’t you just release all the hair? I don’t know much about making custom content but it looks to me as if they’re finished, but I could be completely wrong of course. I was basically just wondering why you choose to do it this way if you don’t mind me asking :-)
I am trying to make sure I have enough to release if college gets super busy and releasing 3 a month is enough to have a pretty good amount of 36 hairs a year. Wasn’t a rude question at all btw :P
Anonymous said: OH MY GOD YOU'RE ADORABLE Anonymous said: omg you are literally the hottest thing ive seen all day and its 100 degrees outside *heart eyes motherfucker*         Anonymous said: ur cute
i choked at these omg XD thank you

I don't think I'm gonna support the next comeback in August. It's mainly due to armys being terrible the accusing winner's mino of pedophilia, Hatred towards got7 and rampant racism towards black fans and the recent racism the k army directed to black fans over fan cafe photos and bts continues to be silent on it has rubbed me wrong way and I don't feel right supporting the next comeback as a black fan myself
I don’t really think its wrong to not fully support the comeback, you still have every right to call yourself a fan/army. Truth be told I haven’t fully supported their comebacks since B,S,& T. I still buy their albums and watch the music video once but that’s about it, if you don’t want to watch the music video or buy the album also, that doesn’t mean your less of a fan either. I kind of stay away from watching the live performances and all that stuff because there’s just so much negativity that their fans put out their.

For the people that don’t know whats going on about Mino I’ll explain it below since it can be a sensitive topic and I don’t want to trigger people. But for the TL:DR he is not a pedophile.

The armys never fail to surprise me. Don’t you remember during their second Mama performance when they collaborated with got7, armys went around supporting got7 just because they performed with bts and they said that they were friends with them… They even supported Jackson because Jackson said that he’s friends with Rap Mon, yet now that got7 is stealing the spotlight from bts they all of a sudden hate got7. I feel like armys wake up angry and wanting to fight people everyday. Got7 has been around for a while, people supported them even when they were featured in an episode of who is next. Got7 is very talented and they work hard so they deserve to get attention. I’m sorry armys but there are a plethora of very talented kpop groups, bts is not the only one of its kind… heck, bts isn’t even “original” there literally Bigbang mixed with B.A.P B.A.P has been around a about 19 months before bts and bigbang has been around 7 years before bts.

I know you said that they fan cafe thing is synonymous with racism and I full on believe you but I’m going to address them as separate because both of them are a major issue in and of itself.
As far as the racism thing… there are a lot of accounts of armys of all kinds of races being racist towards other fans… I’ve even experienced blatant racism from their fans at both TRB and wings. At wings my friend who is full Asian and I were waiting patiently in line, we were keeping to ourselves and we were one of the last people to arrive. In the line that we were in the people in front of us kept looking back and they said that “I thought they just came to America for their white fans“ and I was thinking “did I really just hear that?” who knows what else they said when they got in the venue… It’s just sad that those two girls have that much hatred inside of them, at TRB I attended with my mom as I was only 15, and my friend was 13, both her and my mom are full white. People assumed that my friend was my moms daughter which is understandable, I’m not mad at that, I don’t really look like my mom either. As soon as the heard me refer to her as Mom and my friend refer to her as Miss.P for anonymity… its not that me or my mom have a problem with remaining anonymous but its more like I don’t know who follows me and for what reason… mainly it because I don’t want any retaliation from bts fans maybe someday I’ll be less anonymous, they started treating both me and my mom super rude and weird. Even during TRB, my mom had went upstairs to go to the bar, there was another mom there but she was talking about how awesome Asia is and how her two children younger than me are going to go to Korea and blah blah blah, it was basically this fantasy-land view of Asia and Asians. My mom then told the lady that being married to an Asian isn’t all lollipop and rainbows and living in Hawaii my mom dated a few other Asian men before she married my Father. After that her behavior towards my mom changed, as if she was disgusted over who my mom chose to marry, yet she created that same-like fantasy in her head for her daughters. I had also gone up there to get some water and to get out of the crowd I have asthma and I forgot my inhaler, hot/lukewarm water helps sometimes and the look on her face she she saw me looked was a real look of disgust, she was extremely rude to me too.
If that’s the type of prejudice that I face, being a hapa… I cant imagine what you go through.
Now with the fancafe issue, ever since they opened up the fancafe, the photo have been share left and right. Am I saying its okay? No, it’s against the rules. They have said that they were going to shut down the fancafe or ban people if content gets shared but it seems to just be empty threats from bighit. What’s not cool is that they put the blame on black fans. Fans of all races have been sharing fancafe photos. If they truly want the sharing of the photos to stop then they should report it to bighit… but at this point are they even going to do anything? Its just like how they say that legal action will take place of the content from their dvd’s gets shared but does anyone actually get sued?
Yes, your right, bts and/or bighit should step in at this moment because there is way too much toxicity in that fandom. It’s not hard to tell the fans “hey dont be mean”. “dont be racist”, or even “be nice to other fandoms”. B.A.P has said all of that to their fans, just take a look at BYG’s speech in Atlanta. Bigbang has even said something along the lines of “its okay for you to like other groups, we dont really care” which i believe somewhat help die down the fanwars in the VIP fandom. Although, I dont think that’s what bighit cares about anymore. Yes, bts should be able to come out and say it themselves but like i have said previously, we dont really know what their contract entails, we dont even know if they are aloud to say anything that could potentially jeopardize the money coming into to bighit, and that’s all bighit cares about now, I dont even think bts has freedom of speech at this point, they seem to manufactured as of now. Although, bts has been subtlety dissing their fans lately and I think that this fandom needs it at this point.
Below will be the controversy with Mino.
Now about the Mino pedophile issue, no… Mino is not a pedophile and he didn’t commit pedophilia. Mino was following an instagram account that was ran by a photographer called prettypuke. I’ve know about this account for a while because he had been following since 2015, although some fans say that he was hacked. Now that photographer was also the co-director for CL music video Dr. Pepper which was released in 2015. I also believe that he had worked with other YG artist before and other people from YG were also following him.
What happened is that there was this article in published saying that Mino was a pervert… not a pedophile which, in some cases can go hand and hand but not all perverts not pedophiles. The reason why that made headlines in Korea is becuase of their online censorship and pornography ban which its more like anything that can be sexual is banned, Then this Army got a hold of the article and “translated” it but she flat out called him a pedophile. The reason for that is there was this picture that was uploaded and it was a boy with a buttplug on is forehead, what seemed to be him pretending to be a unicorn. However, just because there was a sex toy in that picture that did not make the picture sexual. There are a ton of videos and pictures where children find their parents toys. It got so bad to the point where Mino unfollowed everyone on his Instagram and the photographer had to make a statement. He said “Here is context to the image causing so much controversy in Korea. I fucking hate that it has come to this. This is my son Casper two years ago. Children are extremely inquisitive. My job as a dad is to be present, educate him, and protect him” along with that he said “My son happen to find his mother’s toy and began to play with with it. To him it’s just a found object, disgusting adults are the ones bringing negative connotation to such a simple image that shows no sexual intent“
The army then tweeted out a half-assed apology, she really didn’t apologize to Mino per se but more apologizing out of embarrassment because there even were a group of armys attacking her. Its just so sickening that she thought that that was okay to say because forever his image will be messed up due to people deeming him a pedophile and it seems like people just started to forget about the whole SMTM controversy. There are no accusations that they can use to even make him seem like a pedophile. This could potentially mess up his solo debut. No matter what, when a man gets accused of being a pedophile, rapist, molester, etc… and hes proven innocent that label will forever be on him for the rest of his life, not necessarily though the legal system but through out the street.  Part of me is also think that she did that to try to tarnish winners name because after Everyday their fame has been increasing like crazy.

been reading a lot of unpopular opinions so I’m gonna add my own
This is mainly about KPOP since that’s the thing I have the most to talk about at the moment. While I’m not dishing out direct shade like “So-and-so is a hoe”, some opinions might be a bit controversial but I’m being 100% honest. If you have any questions and/or comments, just message me and if you’re mature about it, I’ll gladly reply.
Idols need to be treated like people, especially from the fans that are supposed to support them.
What really pisses me off is when a fanbase turn against an idol or group over something trivial and stupid such as someone’s bias is in a relationship, that an idol smoked weed once, an idol is part of the LGBT community or whatever. Point is, that’s their life. Nobody’s perfect and there’s a good chance you never had even the slightest bit of a chance to be with your bias. Thinking an idol has to be this perfect angel who’s saving themself for you is childish at best and completely selfish at worst. Another example is the whole Bambam/Wakanda salute scandal. I personally don’t understand that. Granted, I’m white. But still, if someone can please explain to me why only black people can do the salute from a movie, that would be appreciated. Anyway, back to what I was saying. As long as the idol in question isn’t hurting themselves or the people around them, then let them be themselves. The image their company promotes them as is only that, an image, a facade. On that note, people who are rude and act entitled towards kpop idols are assholes and nobody can tell me otherwise. You all need to chill the fuck out.
Fanwars are just a childish waste of time and effort.
“X is better than Y!” “No! Y is better than X!” How old do these two people sound? This type of conversation belongs on a playground. Everyone is allowed to like who they like and dislike who they dislike. You can still get along. My friend likes Seventeen and I’m not a fan of their music, but I like EXO and they don’t. Does that mean we’re now sworn enemies and have to have a debate every time we see each other? No, we just talk about the groups we both like or we let each other talk about one group’s updates and just say “oh, neat”. That’s it. Simple. Welcome to adulthood.
Nobody gives a shit if you’re an ARMY, stop commenting “ARMY here” or “Stan BTS” on everything, kpop related content or not.
It’s annoying as fuck. I could read the comment section of something that has nothing to do with kpop, nor  South Korea and especially nothing to do with BTS and at least 25% of the comments are “ARMY here, gotta talk about BTS cuz god forbid people forget that one of the most famous kpop groups exists for a minute!” This is why people think ARMYs are annoying children. It needs to stop. Yes, I ignore them plenty of times but seriously, is stating that you’re an ARMY in a buzzfeed unsolved comment section really necessary? I mean come on. If anything, you’re discouraging people from even checking out kpop, since you give us all a bad rep.
If you ask where your bias is on vlive, you’re an entitled asshole and need to stop.
Combining my points about annoying fans and rudeness, you CHOSE to watch that vlive, if your bias isn’t there, they’re not there. Stop asking the idols there where their bandmates are, they probably don’t even know and it’s rude as fuck. Just watch a different vlive or go on Tumblr and look up #yourbias’name on Tumblr or Instagram or whatever. Simple as that. It’s like your friends skyping you but asking to see your sibling or partner instead.
Idols don’t HAVE to learn English.
Would it be convenient if they did? Yes, as an american who doesn’t speak Korean, English speaking idols would be great. But that’s the idol’s choice. While I am grateful for the idols that took the time to learn an admittedly difficult language, if I would need google translate to talk to my bias, should we ever meet, then that’s perfectly fine. I can watch their interviews with subtitles, that’s why they’re there. Learning a language is not easy, even if it’s similar to your native tongue. I taught myself german to talk to a hot german guy who transferred to my school. Now German has many similar roots and is similar grammatically to English, but it was still a pain in the fucking ass. I had to learn new vocabulary, learn how to pronounce new letters, practice conversations and as a high school student, I didn’t have a lot of time, energy or patience for it. Now imagine a Korean kpop idol having to go through this. They would have to take time out of their immensely busy schedule (I’ve heard, at times they only have 2-3 hours of free time just so that they can sleep) to learn a whole new alphabet, learn a grammar that even confuses native speakers sometimes and so on. If you’re really tired of using subtitles and think learning a new language is easy, then just learn korean. Boom, now you won’t need subtitles.
Korean bands are incredibly underrated and it’s sad.
Bands like FT Island, CNblue, N.Flying, Day6 and Royal Pirates have all been slept on too much, and it’s for the thing they all have in common. They all play instruments instead of dance. Doesn’t mean it’s any less good, but still. It can be a refreshing change in sound from the usual electronic sound of most kpop songs. I just wish it got more recognition.
Dark/Sexy concepts > cute concepts
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t completely hate cute concepts (I do like Twice after all and post ooh-ahh, it’s been cute after cute after cute). Personally, before I got into kpop I was mainly in the rock/metal scene and I’m more used to seeing dark, bloody and anything but cute concepts. The fact I’m a horror fan doesn’t really help me like cute concepts that much. Now for sexy concepts, I like how for women, it can be about women taking control of their sexuality and embracing it, while with men...I’m just hella gay. What I like about dark concepts are about how they explore humanity’s worst kept secrets, gothic aesthetics (I personally identify as a punk but goths are pretty damn fab) and I personally think dark concepts are more creative than cute concepts. What I don’t like about cute concepts are how they usually portray the same thing basically, either a bunch of friends hanging out or a bunch of people competing for someone’s affection, how cliche they are and why would I want to see a bunch of 20-30-year-olds pretending to be kids? (Though genuinely childish idols aren’t so bad). Groups that do cute concepts well do try to make it unique (Twice Cheer Up) and have the idols act their age (Girls Generation Party).
I get more excited about my underrated faves winning awards than my popular bias groups.
I am happy when Big Bang, Girls Generation or EXO win awards, but you can almost kind of expect them to win. Now if a group like Nu’est or Ukiss won a daesang, I would be celebrating as if the Rangers got the Stanley Cup (I’m an ice hockey fan from NY). I’m sorry EXO, you may have gotten me a boyfriend (he and I met on EXO amino), but if B1A4 is nominated, I’m voting for them.
Now, for my most controversial opinion...
BTS is overrated
I don’t completely hate them. I’m not a fan of their music and I don’t think any of the members are that good looking. They’re not terrible, I’ll give them that, I actually think they’re okay. But the hype they’re getting, it’s like everyone thinks BTS is the greatest music group of all time. They’re just average in my opinion. But any time I see anything KPOP related, there’s always gonna be BTS either in the comment section, in social media posts, in video/vine compilations and every fucking where else on the internet. I think it’s ridiculous how popular they are, I mean EXO’s very popular too but their references tend to stay in the kpop sphere and usually reserved for when EXO is relevant. When I tell kpop fans I don’t like BTS, 9/10 times, they are the pearl-clutching level of shocked.

Stephanie would give you a reporting on her BTS experience but she’s  dead. Totes dead. Killed by Kpop. Time of death, Friday, March 24th, approximately 8.30 pm. She died happy. May God have mercy on her pervy noona soul.
After meeting up with all factions of the Kpop Nerd Herd, we gathered at a Biergarten outside the Prudential Center–because apparently, pregaming kpop is a thing. Also, get this! The doors to the concert actually opened at 5.30! Holy smokes. Usually, my biggest complaint to kpop concerts is the fact that they are still loading in guests way past the time when the concert is supposed to start causing us, even with seated tickets, to have to get there way early in order to make sure we don’t miss anything. This time, nope, we walked through the doors, right through security and directly to our seats, not a single line to be waited in. It was a close second part of the evening. (First part of course, being anything having to do with BTS.)
As we all bought out tickets separately, we were all seated in various areas in the arena. I was by myself in section 7. Turns out 7 was one of the better sections of the group, beaten out only by Alexis who lucked out with P1 with sound check. Alexis who got in line, with her tent and sleeping bag, at 3am. Gads! I’d say that was crazy, but she got close, really close. Close enough to have full on Alexis/Jungkook interaction. I’m dead? I’m guessing she’s probably headed to the plot next to me.
I get to my SEAT, last to fill in the row, seated next to a J-HOPE and a Rap Monster bias. Not a bad place to be. My seat was right at the corner of the stage extension. The crowd screamed their excitement with every change of the monitors with their music video rotation. You know, because we kpop fans have no chill. We are like the anti chill. Eternally grateful they either allowed my camera in or didn’t find it in my bag, as my phone battery situation was scary–could you imagine what a sad, sad fangirl I would be if I came out of that thing without photographic proof I was there? Nope. Hellz nope.
Soon (as I really slipped in just moments before the show started) the lights darkened and due to my corner seat, I could literally see that all that separated us from BTS was a thin curtain. Yes, me and my (Let’s just come out and admit it) hands down favorite band were in the same country, the same state, zip code, building, room, we were breathing the same air. It’s a heady experience.
Then the curtain was gone. And there they were. Thank goodness I did have the camera as my memory of the thing is a hazy mess of happiness, fangirl squeeeeing, and BTS sweat.
After a disastrous attempt at video-chatting the experience with the McFeeleys  (damn you, cell service at the Prudential Center!) It was just me and the boys…and like 13000 other screaming fans.
Now. I’m not one of those girls who like any sort of sneak peak of what’s going to happen at a concert.  I avoid set lists. I run and way from fan cams. I feel like the surprise is part of the experience. This one going in though, especially since several members of the herd went to both nights, there were some details I was unable to avoid.
From the escaped set list, I knew everyone did a solo from the Wings album. I wasn’t really looking forward to this as I haven’t really listened to the wings album and I am under the assumption that I don’t like them, preferring my BTS as a whole rather than pieces. I knew, from Regina, that the costumes were made from lots of velvet, lots of sparkles.
Hrmmm…. BTS in sparkles? In velvet? And finally, I learned that they had some sound issues the first night where the background music was louder than the voices, which I wanted to believe that they would have fixed the second night around. Second-night people! When possible, always choose night two. Wait. Unless this would make it harder for me to get tickets to night two in which case, woah, first night, first night is the bomb! Get ’em fresh! Jet lag is sexy!
So, that being said, they sang the first one, being awesome of course, but then, since I was trying to live chat, I missed a good portion of it. However. The next song? BLEW MY EVER LOVIN’ BTS FANGRRRL MIND. What was it? Bapsae! Gah! I love this song so much, and not only that but, though I’m not really a ‘ooh look at that dance’ person, I’m all, look at that dance! This is the one song I honestly didn’t think that they would play, and I was literally sad that I’d never get to see them perform that awesome song and adorable dance in person. But I was wrong!!! They played it. It was awesome. The only thing was I couldn’t decide between video and photo so I basically put both down and just jammed out. Screaming my head off of course, but still jamming. If only they’d played it on the extended stage, it would have been perfect.
Side note. Just lost a massive amount of post due to a faulty save draft button. Endeavoring to continue. Harumph.
So. Unlike other bands that had multiple stages ahemBigbangahem BTS actually spent a fair amount of time on both stages, which made me–and the Rap Monster bias next to me very happy. Every time we caught sight of that front stage trap door opening, it was arm thumping and squeeeeing. This was also good because of their lighting choices made it so that anytime they were on the back stage, all video evidence of them were just white glowing orbs of happiness and gyrations.
Also, you’ll notice my photos are a little Rap Monster and J-HOPE heavy. This was not an artistic choice. Okay. So maybe it was a bit. I couldn’t help myself. However, in my defense, they did spend a great deal of time on my side of the stage. It was almost like they knew and wanted to hang out with me. Plus I was egged on by the realization that I would make some of the members of our crew very happy documenting a little J-Hope. I wasn’t wrong.
Now. As I mentioned before, I did actually know they would be performing their solo stuff, and I have to admit it, I’m not the hugest fan, even after seeing them performed live. They aren’t terrible, they just, to me, aren’t very memorable. Except maybe Hobi’s song? Was he the one who sang about his mom? Oh, and Rap Monster when we all shouted that we loved him because his song is about not loving himself or something? Maybe if I give the songs more of a listen I’ll come to appreciate them more.
Another song I kind of wished I’d been prepared for? Because I kind of lost my shit? Cypher 4. Holy fudge guys. I always meant to write a post on this song as, though I refused to listen to Wings, I do have it on my phone and one day I was on the train, heard this mind-blowingly awesome song that immediately hooked me in–turns out it was Cypher 4.
Gah! I love this song. To see the rap line out there all sexy strutting and growls it was flat-out amazeballs. There is really no other word to describe it. The jackets they wore. The saunters. The interaction. Not kidding, if they ever decided to eventually do a rap line sub unit, I would be all in.
We should now probably talk about their costumes. Regina was right. They were heavy on the velvet, heavy on the sparkles, which is just weird, isn’t it? Thinking of their past concepts? Comparing BTS image from now to the little wannabe thug bunnies they first debuted as? Even their solo stuff was bedazzled.
My favorites, of course, will have to be the long robes that the rap line wore for the Cypher, but also the red knitted outfits they wore when they first came to the front stage. Jimin in that oversized red sweater?
Although everything was so oversized and layered it looked a bit like the outfits were actually eating the band. But who can blame them? Nom, Nom, Nom baby. The costume that did not go over well? Hands down would have to be what the KPNH referred to as the pink pearled Jackie O jackets. Seriously? What were they thinking? Whoever came up with that concept should probably…not be allowed to do that again.
The stages itself was pretty simple, no fuss, no big show, the most they had were a few rising pillars in the back
and what appeared to be a glass phone booth that Rap Monster went into at the end of his performance and…I want to say Taehyung came out of at the beginning of his?
Hoseok had a chair, Yoongi an upright piano, but all in all, it was pretty minimal. They did have some backup dancers, but they were fairly unnecessary, really it just distracted from the main event rather than added to it–with the exception of the time that they lifted Jimin–that was pretty freaking cool. Go Jimin, go.
I think it showed that you really you could just have a great performance be a great performance. It’s like when good singers use autotune. Why? It certainly doesn’t add anything. And why bother with the expense?
There was a fun thing that they did at the end with the light sticks. The venue handed out colored bags that you could put your light stick in (the JHope fan grabbed me one and told me I could just use it with my cell phone battery–I totally would have if I hadn’t already run out of battery.) They handed out each section a color, so that at the encore when they boys came out again, the stadium would be lit up like a rainbow. That was pretty nice.
Rap Monster talked about how all colors could enjoy their music–or something like that–I was pretty much a wreck at that point, so I may have missed his meaning.
Hands down this was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. Not just because the guys were there performing their asses off, but also knowing that I was there with almost all of my friends (shout out Cherry Cordial! Have fun at your concert soon!) were there in the stadium with me.
Knowing we were all having the same experience, knowing how much each and every one of us love this band, knowing that after this we would all get together and talk and squeee and laugh over the whole thing? Yeah, that’s what pushed the night over the edge for me and I will really never, ever forget it.
Sappy much?
Anywhoo–I took way too many photos and here is a gallery of just a fraction of them….
The Wings Tour Or How BTS Murdered The Fangirl Stephanie would give you a reporting on her BTS experience but she's  dead. Totes dead. Killed by Kpop.

I saw your tags on l******i's post about clarification and wondered if you think intellectual property still works on tumblr? News and such still use it; doesnt it comply? Youre a level-headed person so I just wondered 😊
This topic has a lot of gray areas and I could write pages and pages, but I’m not going to do that. I really don’t want to get caught up in the middle of the two blogs in question, but since I reblogged and tagged about it I guess I opened myself up to it. I’ll state my views as simply as possible and in respect to the specific posts being discussed. Keep in mind that I am an outside observer, so I have limited knowledge of the situation.
First let me post a couple of definitions of “intellectual property.”
Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind, such as inventions; literary and artistic works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.
The colloquial description of intellectual property is that it comprises all those things that emanate from the exercise of the human mind, such as ideas, inventions, poems, designs, music, etc. Intellectual property is therefore about creative ideas. Dissemination of these ideas benefits society and stimulates further creative activity. However, once ideas have been made public they can be copied by others. If their originators are to control and obtain remuneration from their use they can only do so within a secure legal framework, which creates property rights in those ideas.
I’m just going to focus on the issue at hand, which is creative content on tumblr, which generally doesn’t deal in patents, etc. But a type of intellectual property still exists here because the original creator of content took time and effort, and used their creativity to choose a moment and how to present it. That content should not be taken and used as one’s own with no credit to the creator. Let’s look at the pyramid of ‘ownership’ as it applies to a lot of content on kpop blogs. A group/person performs, they own that performance. A group/person uploads a video, or a fan films a performance and uploads a fancam, the video belongs to the person uploading the video. That person can either give permission to gif or edit the video (with credit of course), or they can forbid it. If fans have permission to gif/edit, then that video is up for grabs as long as the content creator who uses it credits the source. Now, we know that fancams, or any kind of video by ekso (like a vlive) will be watched by thousands. Not all of those fans are going to create content from any given video, but there are a host of fans who will. Is only one person, out of the whole fandom, allowed to create content from a particular video/moment? The first person who uses it owns it? NO.
Okay, so does that mean that fans can only create content from the same source as long as they have a totally different take on it? NO. It’s inevitable that more than one person, many people in fact, will have similar thoughts on a subject or moment. For example, if a thousand people were shown a video of someone kicking a puppy, and were asked to caption it, most would write about how horrible it was, just with different ways of saying it. It doesn’t automatically make it copying to have similar thoughts on a subject.
Let’s just take the ekso fandom as an example, since it’s the one I’m most familiar with. Every time something cute, fun, or interesting happens at a concert or on a broadcast, we get a slew of gifs, gif-sets, photos (the exact same photo posted tons of times with different captions), and video edits. Back in the day, when I used to post more, I used to livestream ekso concerts and stalk vine to find cute and interesting moments that had just happened, and then post the vine with a caption. Now, if I went into the tag, I would often see other people who found and posted the exact same vine, but with a different caption. Do I have a right to go to that person and say they can’t do that because I did it first? No, because I didn’t create the vine, I merely posted it with a caption of my own. Do I have the right to tell them they can’t post it because their caption had the same feel as mine (like we both mention that it was cute or whatever)? No, I can’t claim ownership to a common thought.
Unless a person takes creative content, such as a gif/video edit/photo edit, uses it as if it were their own without permission or credit, or takes something written word for word, then there is no stealing of ‘intellectual property.’
In regards to the two blogs in question, I’m not sure what’s going on, and I don’t want to instigate or pit one against the other, or anyone against either one of them. I follow both. But it seems as though one is accusing the other of stealing gifs, which I have seen no evidence of (I think she just re-used her own gifs in two different posts). l******i has been making gif sets for a long time, and when she does an analysis she is good about crediting sources. If someone wants to accuse another blogger of stealing gifs, or other creative content, they should provide the proof (perhaps link the original post and the post with stolen content). If the accusing blog is upset because l******i did an apartment analysis (which may not be the case, this may just be my assumption), all I can say is that l******i posted an analysis first, then posted a second part after the accusing blog posted her first apartment analysis. They both touched on some similar ideas, and included floor plans, but they did their own work. It makes sense if you are trying to figure out the layout of an apartment to look at what you can see in videos/pics and try to put it together with a possible floor plan. It was a lot of work for both of them, and I appreciate and enjoy both, but I don’t see any stealing going on. The hidden apartment idea has been going around for a while. I even posted something about a ‘secret location’ quite a while ago, but I certainly didn’t consider that the idea belonged to me. If I wasn’t so lazy and unmotivated, I might have done an analysis similar to theirs.
I’m not trying to take sides, and make one blog feel bad. I care about the bloggers I follow and want them to be happy and enjoy tumblr. At the end of the day, I reblogged l******i’s post because I saw people accusing her of things I see no evidence of, and I’ve always thought she was good about giving credit when needed. I don’t like people to be dragged just because someone made an unsubstantiated claim. Plus, I sometimes get the impression that the accusing blog feels ownership over moments or ideas, which might prevent other kd supporters from feeling like they can post about them. I really don’t want that to happen. We should be embracing and encouraging kd blogs and content creators. I previously had a bit of contact with the accusing blog and they were quite nice, so I’m hoping it was all a misunderstanding and it can be sorted out.
Basically it comes down to having integrity and not stealing something another person has actually taken time and effort to create while, at the same time, not accusing others of stealing if you don’t show what and how the content has been stolen.
Let’s remember to be kind and respect each other, especially those of us who love and support kd. We do not need in-fighting.
Phew, that was long. And I’ll probably regret it. Either blog is welcome to talk to me if they feel they were unfairly represented. 💜

“I’m thankful to God, I see an angel and tears come to my eyes, Hallelujah”
--Jonghyun’s “Hallelujah”, my favourite song.
I want to send him off well, so I apologize in beforehand for this long post.
If you were one of my long-term followers, I assume you know of the time my url was locket-mesti, or locktae, right?
Yeah, there was that time. During early 2014, that was my url instead of what it currently is, mestos. It was a fusion of both the fandom names for a Key Stan and a Taemin stan - locket, and taemint respectively. When I first got into Shinee, I fell in love with Key, but the more I got into it I fell for Taemin as well. During that time I usually changed my url to what fandom I was in, and as I have been in actively in the shinee fandom, that was my url.
I first got into KPOP through SHINee. One of my close friends used to always be on her phone, and because we were allowed to listen to music in class, I always reprimanded her to do her work because I didn’t want to lose that privilege. Then she let me listen to some KPOP songs - introduced me to what I refer to as the “cursed” song because it was too catchy, T-ARA’s Bo Peep Bo Peep - such as SISTAR19′s Ma Boy, Wheesung’s UUU, Super Junior’s Sorry Sorry, etc.
Then she let me listen to SHINee’s songs.
We watched a couple of their lives together, and I was pretty entranced with the way they danced. Lucifer was perhaps my favourite at the time because it was so catchy. After a time where I came over to her house I decided to look into SHINee, and I was absolutely in love with Jonghyun’s voice. I loved the way he carried those high notes so well, and his vocal range truly astounded me. Although he wasn’t my type at the time, he really stood out with the way he presented himself as a singer. It made him so memorable.
During that time - even I cringe at the memory - I decided to dwelve into the fandom. I read lots of RPF, had my own share of OTPs, I was just so into Shawol hell. I listened to all their albums, watched all their variety show appearances, kept my favourites on repeat during my tough and hard moments. Eventually, it became a point where I just really loved all five of them equally, and I just say a name if I had to choose. Taemin’s solo got me sold on him, which is why I would say “Taemin” if I were asked to choose a bias, but even so, I loved all of them.
Then Jonghyun’s solo was announced!! I was so happy and proud because in my honest opinion, while Taemin’s was great, Jonghyun was the real singer. His ability to sing will always be at the top and no one will ever surpass his level out of the ones that I love now. I respect him as a musician because of his ability to compose and create songs with lots of feeling as well as showcase them in the greatest way possible. His looks weren’t bad either; after a while, I realized he was the most handsome in the band, with Minho coming second in my opinion.
Then I listened to the album medley. I knew instantly that all of the tracks would be a massive hit. Hallelujah stood out to me the most, but literally every song was amazing. I highly encourage all of you to listen to it because it was the very first time I’ve ever loved every single song in an album. Not only the music, the music video’s aesthetic was so good - I remember being destroyed when his shirtless scenes came on haha - but in overall; I was just so proud of how far he came. I know I hadn’t been there in the fandom since he debuted, but I did my own backtracking and watched so many appearances and tv variety and interviews and concerts that they held over the years to keep up to date, and really; you’re able to really see how he grew.
The album also holds some sentimental value to me. A friend of mine who had returned to South Korea had bought me the physical copy, and it was during a time where there was a bit of rift between my friendship circle, so I felt truly blessed when I was able to hold it in my hands. I was so happy, I made a scene in school - I’m embarrassed of it now - when I saw. When I was finally able to look at his photoshoots with my own eyes, in person, and listen to the full version of the bonus track he had for the physical-only copy, I realized that yeah, perhaps Jonghyun would be the man I’d stan after all.
So from that day, I became a bling bling stan. His stans have a funny name, but its catchy, and I’ll never forget it. I’ll always be a bling bling stan forever even if he is no longer here.
Needless to say, my interest in SHINee gradually declined which I’m sadly guilty of. I returned back to them when they released their beautiful hit comeback “View”, and I loved “Odd Eye” so much. I’m actually listening to it as I type this. It’s definitely one of my most TOP FAVOURITE SONGS in all of the songs I’ve listened to. Watching their promotions, I just grew to love Jonghyun so much. I listened to his Blue Night Radio broadcasts from time to time and I truly admired his character and his overall niceness. I just loved him so much.
And because of that...I also knew he was going through a tough time.
I’m ashamed of...of forgetting.
During that time I was more conflicted because I was going through my own rough edges. I wasn’t able to get over Kris, Luhan and Tao leaving EXO, and I was generally unable to think of any other band than EXO. I became a full EXO-L at the time and arrogantly said “I actually don’t care about SHINee all that much anymore” at some point. Which was dumb, because I also at the time said “I wish I had just stayed in SHINee World so I don’t have to feel this pain”.
As my eventual KPOP frenzy toned down over the years, I still never stopped listening to KJH’s songs. I listened to them wherever I went, because they were always like an angel’s singing to my ears. Hallelujah most especially. I often listened to it as I walked home and tried to clear my thoughts or get them straight. The song got me through my rough times ; when I was at the lowest of the low ; and became one of my saving graces because of how beautiful it sounded. How Jonghyun’s voice sounded.
Just recently, I hadn’t really been into KPOP as much as before...then I hear the news.
It felt like my whole world just broke.
With no exaggeration, I didn’t feel anything at first. Literally. I skimmed through the internet, twitter especially, for anything that would claim this as fake. I literally could not believe that the man with the heavenly voice was gone.
Tumblr media
Then I moved from my chair, opened my light, and picked up the album that I stored away for safe keeping. My hands were shaking as I flicked through the images, took a picture, posted it on Instagram as a tribute, but at that moment I was still in numbing shock.
Tumblr media
When I turned off the light, I fell to my knees and hugged the album tightly. My tears just poured out of me as if everything that had been weighing me down was finally being released. I cried for so long, on the floor amid a mess of a room I have, just holding his album tightly. Through the darkness I searched for his face in the posters of SHINee I hung up my wall, through the faintness of the light from the laptop screen, I just stared at his face, unable to face the truth.
I then decided to bite my tears down and found some strength. I put myself back on my chair and took out the CD from the album and opened it on my laptop. I hadn’t listened to Hallelujah in months - perhaps not even this entire year. When I clicked it and I heard his lines,
“I’m thankful to God, I see an angel and tears come to my eyes, Hallelujah”
I really couldn’t stop myself. I weeped, I sobbed, I couldn’t do anything except cry as the album played. I really didn’t know what else I could do.
After some time, I found some strength, in the darkness with nothing but the computer screen’s brightness as my light.
Tumblr media
After that, it was a bit of a blur. I spoke to a friend, but I forced myself to draw something as I thought it would get my mind busy. Which is why this picture exists; I was projecting my feelings through Illium.
Tumblr media
Eventually the official statement came by and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I shut everything off at around 4:30am, and in the dawn with the skies brightening up to signify a new day, I felt nothing but despair.
At night, I had no dreams. I usually have one, but this time, I had no dreams.
When I woke up in the afternoon I felt like I hadn’t slept. I felt nauseous, as per usual. I skimmed through twitter feed and there was nothing but tributes. My eyes were swollen, and my friend came over to stay the night, and the two of us just talked and talked about it.
The day was enjoyable because the two of us were able to comfort each other, but I often cried. Can I just admit I really hate crying? Because contrary to what people say, it doesn’t make me feel better. It makes me feel pathetic. It makes me feel stupid. It makes me feel like I could be using my time doing something else instead of feeling these stupid things spill from my eyes and ruin my face.
Since then, I’ve been empty. Illium and MapleStory have been helping me get my mind busy, but all I was doing was ignoring the problem, which I’m facing now.
One of the reasons why I was so affected by this one celebrity death is because I know how he feels.
My parents tell me I’m not depressed because I have no reason to be. I tell myself I’m not depressed because I have no reason to be.
But do you know how it feels, when nothing in your life is wrong, things are fine, but yet you can’t help but feel empty all the time?
Everything you see is grey. Everything you feel is grey. When you think you’re happy, you can’t tell if you really are or if you’re forcing yourself to be. You feel “fine”, but what is “fine”? You don’t know the definition of happiness. You’re always tired, you always constantly feel like anything you do doesn’t amount to anything. You can’t seem to remember what it feels like to be happy for a long time. Everything you do is sluggish.
But you’re trying.
I read his suicide note, and I understood.
I was never angry at Jonghyun.
Not once.
Because I know how it feels to fight your way through the darkness. I know how it feels to constantly keep trying to find things to fill the void in your heart that for some reason keeps growing the more you find. I know how it feels to fight the demons within you. I know how it feels to feel like you aren’t living up to expectations.
Which is why I just want to say, like what everyone else is saying, “You did well.”
You did so well Jonghyun-oppa.
You must’ve been so tired. So, so tired. I’m tired too, everyday, I open my eyes and wonder if today is going to be another grey day or if its going to be blue, because my life doesn’t feel like it has any other colour. Any day you think you’re happy doesn’t last long, any day you feel like it has other colours disappear back into grey.
I’m so glad you can rest now. I’m so glad you can just lay back and finally, the demons within you won’t bother you anymore. This isn’t a battle lost. This is a battle won, just not in the best of ways, because you can lay back in the heavens like a hero.
You did so well. Your music will forever be my inspiration, your songs will always flow through my ears all the way into my soul.
You did so well. The smiles you put into my face, into everyone’s faces, will never be forgotten.
You did so well.
You did so, so well.
Although I can never ever see you in person, you’ve imprinted yourself into the net and the world in a way that you can never be forgotten.
I love you, Kim Jonghyun. Thank you for being the best Bling Bling is Jonghyun.
Thank you so much.
Rest in Peace.

Kpop industry and educating artists
I reacted on an up to date Kpop scandal video on y-tube. I decided to post my reaction/rant here also. And this is why we, in the future, have only very restricted kpop music/shows/dramas. Or they just restrict it more for the western culture and keep everything within South Korea. South Korea, where they are certain how most fans/others react. Where artists know what to do or don't. What is and is not accepted.
More and more kpop artists tell us that they are afraid of telling something on whatever social media platform. They are scared to say something wrong in an interview, on vlive, on reality shows, in real life. They are scared to wear the wrong t-shirt, because they didn't know fully 100% what the print on the shirt meant because of an English or whatever language barrier. They are scared to offend a culture (which ever culture doesn't matter), because kpop artists are human (no seriously, they are). And just like you and me, can't know every ins and outs of every culture excising.
- If they cut/braid/color their hair in a specific way they are called racist and are being told to set them selves (and their families, who are of course just as guilty for educated them in this way) on fire. - If they make a weight joke to someone else, something that is accepted entertainment in South Korea and some other countries, people are offended (mostly non Koreans) and they are told to get whatever awful illness there is in the world and die from it. (Yes, I don't like weight jokes either and don't understand them, but that is besides the point here.) - If they make a reference to a dark skinned artist they are immediately in the picture and every sentence the artist said is being dissected, because... maybe he/she said something that could offend whatever culture. And if the 'fandom' 'found' something (even if it is after weeks of searching) it will spread over social media and maybe even the regular news.
Korean artists got even attacked for using a Korean word that sounded similar to a curse word for someone who is black in English. Yes I’m serious. ‘Fans’ even attacked the Korean language and called it racist. And if said artist who made this 'gigantic' offense is unlucky and from (for example) a smaller company, it could be 'bye bye' job. And 'hello' being on blacklists everywhere. (Or maybe they are male and 'lucky' and can join the army sooner than planned and hope that, when they return, everything calmed down and people have forgotten about their offense.)
But of course before said criminal artist is told to off her/him self, they are getting a chance to apologizes. Fans, mostly non Koreans, decide to 'educate' said artist on the culture they offended (one of the 10.000.000 cultures and their rules). They do this by flooding their social media accounts/personal accounts and family accounts with messages about what they think the artist did wrong and sometimes how to better him/her self. That a lot of those messages differ from each other, because a lot of rumors and hearing it from this person, who heard it from the person who has a friend who watched the from Chinese translated Korean interview (and so no one knows exactly what did happen), doesn't matter. Said Korean artists has to listen and has to be 'educated' like a five year old. And has to apologizes afterwards. When she/he did, it's up to the hurt/offended fans/others and all those others who joined the -I am offended because I heard I should be offended because of this and this reason wagon-, to decide if the apology was sincere enough. (I think you could compare it to voting for whatever politic something) If ,say, 30% find the written apology not enough or doesn't trust the sincerity of the apology, like I said, then 'sh*t hits the fan. (And guess what... It's impossible to get a 100% vote for anything.) Humans are humans and human opinions differ from each other.
Everyone knows what happens afterwards. More and more death treats. Old 'crimes' the artist/or the group he/she is in, or the company committed, are getting 'a new life'. And the offended people are getting only more and more offended. Then there is the group that defend and 'defend' said artist. Which results in people talking about the happening for maybe even months to come. Really great. Especially for said artists. Why?
Let me explain to you how the Korean Culture and entertainment industry works most of the time (wish me luck with my limited English knowledge). Even though most rookies have a, for example, dating ban. Lot's are still dating (sorry to break your heart). Why? Because companies are very good in keeping a 'blind eye' to it. BUT, if it is found out and (doesn't even matter if it's true or not) and the rumor is spread and turned into a so called 'scandal', it's a whole different story. Then it depends what actions will be taken by a company. And what action has to do with many different factors of course.
- How important is the artist to the company. How is the artist seen by the public at that moment, Is the company big enough so they have money to cover everything up, how much money will the scandal cost the company, etc, etc. But most important: how big was the damage done to the image of the company. If the last is big enough, you can be almost certain that a company will let an artist go. Or persuade them to leave on their own. The dating ban was an example. But what I said above, goes for almost everything.
LGBTQ artists, pasts of artists, caught smoking, caught having sex, others who find it entertaining to set a Korean artist in a very black light, the artist having debts, artist using whatever drugs, artists who doesn't want to go to the army, artists who bully, artists who's getting bullied (Yep, even them), artists who were found out they had plastic surgery ... (come one! Everyone can see that there are many of them. Some teens get it as present when they finished high school or something similar...), Kpop artists who are from another country/culture and make cultural mistakes. The list is endless.
If it damages the image of a company, doesn't matter if you're 'at fault' or not, you have a big chance to -get nicely told- to pack your bags and leave everything you most likely trained for foryears. Leave your group members (if you had any) Leave your dorm and stand empty handed on the street with nothing. Most Korean artists trained and prepared themselves from childhood for the idol life. Not that many idols have an education that has nothing to do with music or acting or something similar. If they want to go back to the music industry but their name isn't 'cleared', there is a big chance lots of tv programs, companies, etc put them on a blacklist. Which simply means: no work. And even if the artists name is ‘cleared’. Everyone will remember. The artists image was damaged and will stay probably damaged. If a Korean artist is more lucky the company could force them (and their group) to 'take a break' and 'think about what they did so 'horribly wrong'. Those breaks are most likely to last half a year or longer. It doesn't stop there either. If an artist makes 'a mistake' there is a big chance that it affects said artist family as well. Like I said: image is for most a very big thing in South Korea. If the image of a family is damaged the family could go through some very heavy backlash from it. They could be even shunned by their community.
And don't tell that everything isn't ' this extreme' because it is. If you follow Korean artists for a long time. Educate yourself in the Korean Culture, you'll find MANY examples.
Remember those artists who were forced to go on hiatus and apologize with a shaved head because something offensive they 'said' in another country that also was translated not fully correct in English afterwards? The group that sometimes afterwards got white in the face when the one who took the interview stopped talking or if said person taking the interview asked if they were sure about the answer they gave? Because they were scared they said something 'wrong' again. That traumatized group? No? Because I do. Remember a poor Korean artist who, for almost a week, was being cyber-bullied by bullies from all over the world who spread the rumor that said person was a rapist and should also be sexually assaulted in the most horrible ways possible. Nope? ... Or do you? Remember that Korean artist who lost his/her father and had a difficult time handling it. Fell asleep during an interview and got attacked because of it, because he/she -didn't take his job seriously and was too egoistically.- That girl/guy who everyone said was most likely on drugs (something that is very illegal in Korea. Something that, when being accused of this, will most likely force further investigation by authorities), because she/he fell asleep? Want to know what happened to that guy/girl? He/she left her/his group because of 'musically differences' with the rest of the band. Remember the Korean artist who had someone who spread rumors about the artists past and left his/her group because of the negative image it could give the group? Want to know which case I meant? ... Yeah exactly. That's my point. Remember that artist that was being bullied/educated/threatened/abused/ignored/left empty handed because of stupid rumors and got depressed and eventually committed suicide? You do? Of course you do...
It's up to everyone individually to be offended/hurt by something said. Because of discrimination. Because of a traumatic event(s) you went through which what said artists did or said reminded you off. Because others told you that you have to be hurt of it, because they tell you it was wrong what was said/done.
It's up to everyone individually to take action for said/doing those hurtful/offensive or 'hurtful/offensive' things by the artist. But just know that your actions have consequences for the Korean idol because of all these mentioned above. Be prepared to face the consequences your 'taking action' has on said Korean artist. When you see yourself as an old and wise/a responsible adult enough to educate a Korean idol grownup or even teen, about the wrongdoings this world has, then stay this old and wise/a responsible adult afterwards. Know that, whatever the outcome your actions has, you are also responsible for those outcomes. Accept the consequences and damage your actions maybe did. Don't you dare say "This wasn't what I wanted to happen".
If this information above is all new for you, or you still don't believe it. I suggest you read a bit more about this specific culture and on the entertainment industry in general. Educate yourself more on that, what you find yourself wise enough for to educate others about, and have a say in their way of living and thinking.
First have knowledge about the things you're talking about, before you try to convince others. More people should do this in my opinion. (sorry for all the grammar and spelling mistakes. I'm just a Dutch woman who is no where near fluent in the English language.)

Chapter 2: The Real Beginning
Since joining Oval Entertainment company, the largest and most successful entertainment group in South Korea, Rossella had to get used to a new name: Rosie. After being scouted by the company via her YouTube channel at age 19, Oval Ent. took her under their wing for the years of training to come in their accredited Kpop academy, known as “The O”. Rossella, was their “odd little jewel”, being the first solo female artist the company had contracted, let alone the first ever DJ they wanted to sign. But she could mix down songs incredibly fast, and was naturally incredibly beautiful, even by high Korean standards, so adding her to their ranks was an relatively easy decision.
Because she wasn’t trained in dance and wasn’t comfortable singing in front of crowds, Oval marketed her as a bit of an enigma, encouraging her to never do interviews or let her actual voice be heard in order to add depth to her image. The crowds across Asia and other various parts of the world ate up both her music and her beauty, and their curiosity was only peaked by the forced silence, making her the subject of fervent fan theories. Was that her voice in her most recent album release? What was she really like? Was she mute? Was she deaf? Was she arrogant, so arrogant, that none deserved to hear her precious tones? Did she take a vow of silence for a lover? (That one was her favorite, and always brought a mischievous smile to her lips.)
Rossella was quite amused by it all. As the daughter of famous parents, she knew how agents, performances, interviews, public image… all of that shit worked. Her father was a famous music producer at the dawn of the musical movement in Korea and a well-known jazz musician, performing complicated trills and solos on his beloved saxophone. Her mother was a famous Italian singer, daytime television star, and cookbook writer. Lasting, passionate love bloomed between the two of them in a small basement jazz bar outside of Rome during an impromptu duet. He played saxophone while she sang, and the two were never apart since. Married after just a year, they quickly longed to have a family, and voila, Rossella was born. Half Korean, half Italian, and wholly doted upon.
Rossella was at a high risk of being spoiled to be sure, as she was an only child and quite a talent. It took many careful talks and lessons from her parents to learn the “The Three”, as her mother called them.
1.     Beauty is not about what you look like, but what you look at.
2.     Talent is not for self-gain, but for sharing with others.
3.     Honesty is always the best idea.
Both her father and mother made her promise to uphold these truths, and Rossella came to treasure them in her heart. They were the one thing that she brought with her at 19 to Seoul after being signed to Oval. The cutthroat entertainment industry sought to change her physical appearance, which it often did, but nothing, thanks to her parents love and consistency, could change her truths.
Aside from teaching their daughter how to walk through life, the couple also taught her how to play over 15 instruments, each being very easy for Rossella to master during her childhood and teenage years. She was, in every sense, a prodigy in the musical arts. She also began to teach herself techo mixing and DJ-ing, which she shared on the internet. Thus began her journey in South Korea.
After a full year of simultaneously training and performing, Rossella soared to success under Oval’s regime. One afternoon, her personal agent interrupted her dance training, for which she was extremely grateful. Some dancing had to be done for music videos and performances, and she liked it well enough, but her lack of talent in the area left her frustrated at times. When she saw her agent that fateful day, she quickly bounded over on her long legs to him. Go Gun Ho was personally chosen by her father to entrust his daughter with as her agent and caregiver, knowing the older man would protect her as his own. Rossella had come to love him as an uncle, often referring to him as “sam-chon” (uncle) rather than “sawn-sang-neem” (sir). Gun Ho had an excited look on his face.
“Rosie!” he called in Korean, “We need to talk. An interesting offer just came in for you, and I think it could be good for you. Maybe even fun! Let’s grab some coffee downstairs.”
Rossella quickly nodded her thanks to her instructor, who gave her a look of relief – she obviously still had so far to go on this new choreography. She quickly followed Gun Ho to the Oval’s version of a cafeteria, Cuppa. The well-lit, jungle themed space was a popular spot for meetings and brief moments of relaxation for trainees. The pair sat down at their favorite table after ordering drinks for each other. Rossella could tell Gun Ho was obviously excited about the news, which instilled a sense of comfort in her. She really did trust him.
He took a sip and began. “Okay, hear me out, Rossella. But supervisors up stairs are casting for a… wait, for it… television show! And they have decided that they want YOU to be actually be in it! With your album dropping soon, they feel that revealing who you are to the world will help sales. They know you’re likable as a whole, so they don’t feel major character coaching would be needed during your time on the show.” He looked at her with hopeful eyes. “Well, what do you think? You can talk now! Are you ready for that?”
That question stuck with her for the remainder of the week, as she tumbled with the idea. Eventually, however, after seeking the advice of her mother and father and friends in the company who had transitioned from music to television, she decided to agree. Besides, it would be fun, right? The words “carpe diem” and “adventure” were always important to Rossella, and this moment seemed… right in a strange way.
A week after Gun Ho’s news in Cuppa, she sat down with the CEO and head producer of Oval Entertainment to learn more about the opportunity. She was typically a very easy-going, relaxed person, but the spotless white couches and expensive décor made her feel stiff and… anxious. Then there was Park Jun Ho, the CEO and “big boss” (that’s what the trainees called him, anyway). Though he was small, smaller than Rossella even, he was quite intimidating with his sharp suits and quick words. He quickly called the meeting to order when she and Gun Ho were served sparkling waters. The formality was tangible, and the water a bit bitter.
“We are so glad you are working with us on this, Rosie. We really feel that this move will boost your career and our reputation as a company. Isn’t that correct, Tae Min?” he looked to the other man in the room, the middle-aged, flamboyant, and rather arrogant Jin Tae Min. He took a moment to examine Rossella with squinted eyes, a move she was used to. It didn’t bother her a bit anymore, so she continued to sit as she did before his not-so-courteous gaze.
“I do think we could make it work,” he drawled out in overly formal Korean, “as long as you’re going to really work with us. Meaning following… guidelines.” Rossella expected this, and nodded her head in agreement.
“I can do that, I think. I will try my best, as I’m able to. But first, I have to ask… is this a drama? If so, a comedy, or romance?” She blushed at the thought.
“Oh no, no, no,” Tae Min sneered, “this is ‘reality’ television,” he curled his fingers in air quotations near his professionally sculpted cheeks. Park Jun Ho nodded in agreement with certainty.
“Reality? Oh.” Funnily enough, Rossella totally forgot to consider reality television as an option. She was smart enough to know that it was common practice for Oval Entertainment to create reality television shows starring their own celebrities for promotional purposes. Sometimes they even bought spots on national television shows to reach the same end goal. “Alright,” she said slowly, looking at Gun Ho. “Which show?”
“Well, Living in Love of course,” Park Jun Ho laughed. “Don’t you know it’s nearly time for production of our most popular show? You must be so dedicated to your training and schedule that you have no time for knowledge like this. I commend your hardwork!”
Rossella sat frozen for a moment. She knew about the show, to be sure, as it was a topic of nearly constant conversation amongst trainees at Oval. Living in Love? Her?
Fuck.
