a short essay about being bug hearted, and killing bugs.
I think one of the most cruel thing to love might be invertebrates. Insects. Arachnid. Worms. Pest. With any other animal, it is seen as unreasonable to want to eradicate. Some insects do manage to earn human's favors, bees (but only the useful ones), moths and butterflies (but only the cute ones), and if you're facing a true bug lover, beetles and dragonflies and perhaps even spiders and centipedes and scorpions. But not all, and it's still simply reasonable, to hate even seeing them.
I've loved bugs since I was a kid. I think it felt wrong not to, because people didn't like them, and people didn't like me. I don't think I've ever understood what in how they move felt less alive for people than a puppy. Still now I love bugs. I love mosquitos and I love botflies and I love hornets and tiny annoying ants that crawl through the windows and cockroaches and the wasp that stung me on the thumb when I accidentally grabbed a stick she was resting on when I was 9.
You cannot possibly live a human life without killing countless things. It's impossible. The most vegan, most peaceful human, refusing to walk on grass to not harm the grasshopper that didn't jump fast enough, will not be able to live a life without killing an insect even accidentally. It's something I have thought about a lot overall. I'm not vegan. I've thought about it. It would make sense, I don't see a lot of difference between my own flesh and the flesh I eat. But somehow it feels even more insulting, to be something that kills, and to pretend I don't. I eat insects, too. I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly how I feel about it all.
Maybe it makes me an hypocrite, to be so perturbed about the way people treat insects when I still eat meat. But it's, I think, in the end, the fracture between someone seeing a dead cow, and a dead fly. Most people wouldn't have the courage to kill a cow. They would feel guilt. In fact, a lot of people already hide the fact that meat is flesh and is, strictly speaking, part of a cadaver. People who refuse to eat a fish with the head. Pork, not pig. Beef, not cow. I hate that too. But insects ? People kill a fly without even thinking about it. It's annoying, then it's dead. A dead fly doesn't elicit guilt.
People expect me to be the same. Even knowing I love insects, it's seen as amusing that I acknowledge them as more than a mindless automaton, and, if I can, if it costs me nothing, avoid killing them. I have killed countless insects. I've had to, purposefully, many many many times. But it is, in fact, killing. I just want to be allowed to recognize that.
I work in a lab, on ants. We dissected more than a hundred, ovaries, poison gland, brains, understanding how they work, how differentiation happens and how they communicate it. Reconstructing brains to evaluate changes in different structures, measuring how many proto-egg each individual has post-dissection and correlation to dominance, reading articles and articles about theory.
These specific ants like shallow humid grooves for their nest. Today we tested a large foraging arena, brightly lit for the cameras, dry, wide, open, empty. Ants panic after being picked up even with the least harmful tools we have. When in an unfamiliar space, we've had them in the past run until they died of exhaustion, unable to find the entry of the nest to hide. Two of them were placed in the foraging arena to test the cameras, test if we could read the tags they have on their back. Again and again, they like to follow the walls, possibly because it feels less exposed. And again and again, they stop, groom each other, and calm down if they meet, huddled into each other.
I can't claim to know what's going on in ants brain, whether they feel things similarly to us. But it's hard not to project.

okay i'm just rambling here so i hope this sounds coherent
you know how there's different types of dragons in fiction? i noticed that whenever a work has different kinds of dragons there's always this specific type that always shows up: the basic red fire-breathing dragon
this sometimes applies to other fictional creatures too, whenever there are different kinds of a certain creature (like vampires or something) there's always one type that is the "basic" or "standard" one
i don't know if there is a reason for doing this in fiction, but i wanted to point it out
No, that makes sense. Our view of fictional characters depends on how they are portrayed in our culture. Perhaps to you, dragons always seem to be portrayed in literature/films as red and fire-breathing, because that is the media that you consume or is immediately available to you. But if you ask someone from a different culture, their idea of a "dragon" may be entirely different, perhaps even the opposite.
Here's an excerpt I really like that gives us one possible explanation for this:
Nearly every culture has myths about something called a "dragon", despite the fact none of them can agree on exactly what dragons are....[The depiction of dragons] generally fall within two traditions, "Western" and "Eastern", which come from almost certainly unrelated mythological currents and only share the name of dragon due to a questionable case of cultural translation: Westerners who encountered stories and images of Chinese and Japanese dragons sprung on the similarities to the European dragon and couldn't think of anything better to call them. And even then, in addition to cultural differences, dragons fall into a very wide range of types even in one local mythology.
They differentiate between Western & Eastern Dragons as well, for instance:
Western // Eastern
Are scaly and reptilian (outwardly, anyway), and usually serpentine. // Are Mix-and-Match Critters, though the exact components vary (generally, they can best be described as either "lion-snakes" or "wolf-snakes"). They sometimes evolve out of Seahorses or Legendary Carp.
Normally associated with fire, which they often breathe as an attack. In Greco-Roman, Germanic and Medieval stories, they lack breath attacks but may be highly venomous. Only in the oldest myths they are associated to water. // Normally associated with water (and the sky, which was considered an ocean in classical Chinese thought), and are often considered bringers of rain. Furthermore, the Azure Dragon and the Yellow Dragon are associated with Wood and Earth, respectively. In some works, some Chinese dragons can breathe fire. In some legends, they are capable of this after being punished.
Usually live in mountains and caverns. Older examples often lurk in swamps, wells or lakes. // Usually live in rivers or in the sea, more rarely in mountains.
Any size enough to make them dangerous to man, yet usually within vaguely realistic limits. Typically around the same size range as houses, if not larger, at least when fully grown. // Can be as small as a grasshopper or large enough to fill the space between heaven and earth.
So it seems your idea of a "dragon" is more western. However, the line between Western and Eastern depictions are becoming blurred in recent times, as many authors are integrating various aspects to make their stories stand out, constantly borrowing from different traditions and cultures. Some even create completely new attributes, which is great.
Similarly, with the depiction of vampires, the stereotypical image or trope that you know may not be the norm for someone else. For example:
Chinese Vampire: An undead being from Chinese Mythology called the jiāngshī, depicted as a hopping vampire/zombie that feeds on chi or life energy (though some jiāngshī drain blood while they're at it due to cross-cultural influence.)
Here are some resources/articles I really like that discusses the varying depictions of vampires, not just among different cultures but across time as well: 1 2 3
Like this categorisation:
The Malignant Cycle (1931-1948): The vampire is treated as a creature of pure horror, as popular in the early films like Nosferatu and Universal films.
The Erotic Cycle (1950-1985): The vampire is considered evil but alluring, like in the Hammer Horror films.
The Sympathetic Cycle (1987-2001): The vampire is seen as a tragic monster to be pitied, but still feared, though they can sometimes be redeemed, usually by becoming human once more.
The Individualist Cycle (2003-present day): The vampire can be bad, good, or in between, much like humans, and their transformation to vampirism does not imply a change in morality.
The sheer number of different and contradictory myths that have built up around vampires over the years have made it difficult to explore all of them in great detail. To deal with this, writers have started putting multiple types of vampire into their setting, with the explanation that different myths describe different types of vampire. These are often referred to as "bloodlines", although any term suggesting shared descent or culture may also be used.
Thanks for sharing this with me. As you can see—I can also ramble. Would love to hear more of yours :)

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!! Just some super cool arts
Tumblr media
If I EVER had the patience to write and draw the Catecis comic, it’d look like this
This is just a grasshopper sailor out on the Waspian port
I was thinking about naming him Sir. Irian like the Iris flower. The thing is I have to differentiate him from Iris, a male monarch Butterfly across the entire world. Or Sir. Astroway as his last name is Astroway due to his sailor family using stars as a way to travel.
About my long break: Look guys, I haven’t been doing well mentally. I am in a depressive state, I am sleep deprived, I am done with life. To draw so much and pour your time and skill into an artwork only for a few likes can be frustrating. I don’t post my art for fame or love, I do it to share my ocs and ideas, I don’t want the masses to flock, I just want recognition for my work. I didn’t really mean to take a break, I get distracted very easily and forget to post. I wish I could post more but art takes time, I have to develop ideas and passion due to my constant art block and burnout. The only good thing in my life is just being alive. There is a large scar on my neck because I gave myself a friction burn with my lanyard at school due to anxiety :( I have mental problems, whatever I have, it isn’t good and will probably slowly deteriorate me to a depressive glob of my former self, but I will never get diagnosed. My family is constantly angry at me for no reason, I get that my clean obsessed behaviour can get annoying especially when I panic and get water everywhere, but I hate to be yelled at for something that I cannot control or fix. They say I am overreacting and will got over it, but I’ve tried, there is no fixing this. That’s why I’ll probably never ever get a diagnosis or therapy session. I lied, I am actually not as okay as I say I am. If I ever don’t post for a period time, please know that it’s either from lack of art or mental issues. I am sorry for not posting in awhile as my usual breaks take a time of 3 days or 2. I am deeply sorry.

Bevel, Snow, and Berry.
I drew these in my math book, very classic place to doodle, I know. There’s not a lot of doodles in my book though, I am usually trying to do equations and get an 100 on my test

I finally got a haircut, though my hair is now a short messy thing, I feel quite confident even if I don’t fully look masculine. My arm hair should be quite an indicator and the trans pin inside my backpack, haha! That pin was made by a friend of mine, don’t worry he’s very fruity and slay. Idk if it’s just my senses but my hairdresser was definitely an ally, he slayed, my hair is hairing. Also I have giant eyebags and a cowlick, like I literally have Dem’s cowlick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s some more little oc ideas. Eclipse is my first transfem oc, I know I know I’m slaying. She’s has a twin sister, Luna! Yes, Eclipse and Luna are Hornet twins, from the same egg btw. I still don’t know how it works, I’m too tired to research though. Arctic and Viper are a married couple, I like to think Arctic is just a lesbian and her/his wife is a crazy queen with schizophrenia who totally didn’t kill her family. They’re both from Bloodlust’s time period, though a little older.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t want to talk about it… This is really gross but because Snow’s family wanted to keep the bloodline “pure” she’s SHORT and albino but like literally no one else in her family is albino… poor Snow… GUYS DONT MARRY YOUR SIBLINGS AND COUSINS… Bevel transmasc headcannon, I’m not making it cannon yet because Bevel is a lesbian.

Layze, Funkyfrogbait, and Bevel with one tooth
@purpledemonss asked for this minus Bevel, that was my idea
OKAY I LOVE YOU GUYS SM, EAT THIS UP, STAY A MENACE TO SOCIETY JUST DONT EAT LEATHER UNLESS YOU ARE DEATHLY STARVED

Coralina Locust Nymph - Dissosteira carolina
It gets more difficult every year to offer up a red-colored insect in celebration of Canada Day. Of course, there are several familiar and iconic insects to pick (such as the Milkweed Beetle featured 2 weeks ago), but maybe that's too easy. As it happens, I wasn't sure what to upload, but mother nature seemed to hear my oddly specific problem and answered. Moreover, she answered in way let allowed the blog to continue showcasing insects from some of the more neglected insect order. As such, what do I find among the pine bushes while weeding the patio stones? A very conspicuous Orthopteran walking and climbing among the needles! I couldn't tell you how it got there, but I'm happy to have found it. Sure, it's a brick brownish-red color rather than a brilliant saturated red, but it will do, and what a beautiful specimen it is. While that brick-red coloration might be out of place in a verdant environment, it is intended to be used in a sandy, stone-filled environment in order to camouflage against the ground and more lithic elements.
Crypsis and remaining motionless are the best options this young Grasshopper nymph has to survive since its wings haven't grown yet. Upon arriving into adulthood, this specie will be capable of hurling itself long distances and then using its dark, yellow-bordered wings to truly fly. As such, this individual was at great risk up in the pine bushes, so I picked him up and placed him in the grass below, and then it scampered away quickly. While photographing this nymph, I noticed a few things like I'd like to bring to your attention. There are dark stripes/blotches on the inner hindleg of this Grasshopper (best seen in Pictures 1 and 5). As well, if you look at the pronotum (thoracic plates) of this jumping insect, take note of the notch in the pronotum. Apparently this notch is characteristic of this specie and helps differentiate it from other mottled and gravelly Grasshoppers, and yet, it's such an obvious thing to see. Combine these 2 observations and we for sure have a young Carolina Locust identified. Nevertheless, how it wound up in a pine bush, I'll never know.
Pictures were taken on June 30, 2024 with a Google Pixel 4. Happy (day after) Canada Day! Have a great adventure!
