Review: stillyoung’s newest single ‘Freak Like Me’ embraces standing out with an easy-going indie sound that’s a welcome respite for all

Reigning out of Oakland, the up-comer stillyoung just made his first ever mark on the music scene with the release of debut single ‘Freak Like Me’, the first snippet into what we can expect from this promising newcomer. Between influences from Foals, Day Wave, Diiv and Jimmy Eat World, there’s something inherently a little older and nostalgic about his staple sound, merging what we know and love of modern indie with the warmth of cherished favourites.

From the get-go ‘Freak Like Me’ is atmospheric and dreamy, a sound that feels like driving down the highway with your speakers on full blast, the sunset on the horizon, and a good friend in the passenger seat. Set up by an intro of echoey beats before a bright, groovy electric guitar riff, steady drums and an easy-going strums come into the mix, it really feels vibrant and filled with colour, a technicolour palette just waiting to be carefully twisted into art. Softening for the verse, things begin to become a little more personal as rich bass twangs and continued gentle drums hold the soundscape up alone, allowing stillyoung’s vocals to resonate front and centre. There’s still momentum and ease, but with every line you cannot help but feel more, understanding the weight of the narrative even amidst the reflections that seem to paint a picture of a better life. With a hushed, half-spoken sung performance spilling out stillyoung’s mouth, it feels like hearing every single word from a friend nestled beside you, revealing hidden secrets and troubled relationships for your ears only. Echoey backing vocals add a haunting emphasis to certain lines too, all before a voicemail-esque message plays just further continuing that sense of intimacy the sound seems to harbour.

The narrative of ‘Freak Like Me’ feels almost multifaceted too, something that combines both stillyoung’s most recent realisations and life-changes, as well as containing bottled-up essences of his past self. Running us through memories and personal conversations from the start, lyrics like ‘she says she doesn’t know if she’s ever been happy, but what about the time that we went to the golden gate late night’ seem to share a very personal insight into some kind of romance between two people that together have experienced some great turmoil. The chorus hook is where we see the most depth though, admitting ‘we’ve got all the time in the world if you choose to trust a freak like me’ as stillyoung embraces what makes him a “freak” to others and finds that the truest happiness and love comes from being who you really are. The following verse is where we see slithers of perhaps regret or disappointment, singing ‘she says she doesn’t see any future with me, it’s hard to hear’, yearning for something they once had to be rekindled. There seems to be lingering hesitations though, with lines like ‘maybe we were meant to be, we’ll just have to wait and see’ and questions that ask ‘did you ever think our love could change?’ Through this pondering, we’re almost brought back to who stillyoung was before, attempting to be someone he wasn’t to fit in and get love from someone that’s shared they don’t see that happening. Between pain and revelation, there’s a lot to unpack through ‘Freak Like Me’, relating to change that has been seen in his reality as much as it’s scarcely shared to us here too.

With so much to learn, embrace and let go of, ‘Freak Like Me’ is worth keeping around for when you need it most, just don’t forget to keep listening here.

La banda neoyorquina conformada por Andrew Bailey, Benjamin D Newman, Colin Edward Caulfield y Zachary Cole Smith vuelve al país para presentar su nuevo álbum "Frog in Boiling Water”.

Recargados de dream-pop y shoegaze, DIIV regresa a Buenos Aires el próximo jueves 12 de septiembre para presentarse en el C Complejo Art Media (Av. Corrientes 6271) con un show único en el que repasarán sus mejores éxitos y presentarán lo nuevo al público argentino.

Después de siete años sin venir, se trata de una visita muy esperada por sus fanáticos que pudieron verlos por última vez en 2017. Una oportunidad única e imperdible para presenciar en vivo a una de las bandas que más ha influido en la escena alternativa actual.

Además de su material previo, tocarán por primera vez en Latinoamérica su último trabajo, "Frog in Boiling Water", fruto de un proceso creativo de cuatro años que desafió los límites y probó los lazos entre sus integrantes.

Un álbum que ofrece una mirada profunda hacia la incertidumbre del mundo y el presente, mientras busca expresar un atisbo de esperanza en medio de la oscuridad.

Las entradas se pondrán a la venta el lunes 27 de mayo, con la primera preventa disponible a partir de las 12:00 a través de Passline Argentina.
