fake roma are so fucking funny like... you don't want to be in the romani community. i've been friends with fauxmani and they talk so much shit about "gatekeepers" and real roma. you literally want an ethnicity that is easy to fake and you want a space full of other fauxmani who will endlessly validate you. you don't actually want to be romani, you don't want to learn our language or customs beyond the ones that make you feel special (like wearing the dikhlo, tied wrongly, as an unmarried woman). you want there to be "romani names" you can call yourself and "romani recipes" you can make and you get soooo disappointed when you're told our cuisine is mostly family variations on balkan and turkish dishes. you don't get to cherrypick our culture, you're not reconnecting, you're a white gadjo who wants to claim an ethnicity other white americans know nothing about. real roma will always be able to tell you're a liar and that's why you avoid us like the plague. sorry to burst your bubble but you'll never fit in <3

Is there any significance to the headscarves that Romani people sometimes wear? I saw a webtoon called The Witch and The Bull (the witch characters look like stereotypical Romani people) and I realized that it is in some depictions like in Mystic Arcana but not always.
Yes, actually, and I'm glad you asked! We see these specific types of headscarves all the time in depictions of Romani people, but we don't see much of the cultural context. The image of a Romani woman with her hair tied or covered by a scarf is so ubiquitous that the scarf itself has become something of a visual shorthand for Romani womanhood, and all of the stereotypes that are unfortunately attached. That's why they're so pervasive with witches and fortunetellers in media.
So, what's the real deal?
The scarves worn in traditional Romani dress are usually called dikhlo, but the spelling may vary depending on your region or community. Dikhlo can be worn in a variety of styles, and they aren't just limited to head coverings. In Calé culture (that's me 👋🏼) similar garments are worn around the shoulders like a shawl, and in some communities, men wear them around their necks like kerchiefs or, well, like scarves. Dikhlo are often made out of printed or patterned textiles-- floral motifs, particularly, roses, are especially common. Like many elements of Romani culture, these aesthetic motifs and clothing styles can be traced back to the diaspora's origins in South Asia.
When used as a head covering, dikhlo primarily serve as modesty wear. In some cases, there is also a sanitary element to covering or binding the hair, as cleanliness and practicality are factors in many elements of Romani culture.
Different communities have different customs and expectations about this sort of thing, so there is no one set of rules for who has to cover their hair, or when, but it is primarily reserved for women. In many communities, married women were traditionally expected to cover their hair outside of the home, and the dikhlo itself was worn in particular styles to reflect marital status.
These traditions are still in practice, but as I understand it, modern generations are a lot more relaxed with these customs. Nowadays, many people choose to wear dikhlo simply as an expression of their cultural identity. Romani cultural dress is frequently appropriated, and Romani cultural expression is often heavily policed, so, in that context, yes, there is quite a bit of significance to this garment. I do wish more people understood this context, because if they did, the dikhlo probably wouldn't be used in such a stereotypical, appropriative fashion by gadjekane artists.

this is what i meant by not speaking on romani fawki when you’re not one of them or even know the culture / raised with it in any capacity like i was.
one, lilith. you should not be using the slur gypsy at all. keep it out of your goddamn mouth. you know the actual ethnic name so use that, gadjo.
two, the branwen tribe in fixing rwby aren’t romani but ainu. this has been said by the creators multiple times but we all know you aren’t actually going to pay attention to things when you can mindlessly shit your pants to defend a company of racist antisemites instead.
if you look at their design of vernal, it’s so clear that she’s not meant to be romani but you probably just saw the head covering & long skirt & thought in your little dinlo brain that all that equals gypsy.
Tumblr media
vernal’s headcovering isn’t a dikhlo but just a normal bandana, a dikhlo would cover far more of her head & her hair would be braided into one or two braids as she’s an unmarried young woman. her skirt is also too short & has exposed slits, which doesn’t fit romani style skirts in the slightest. our skirts are worn for modesty, to shape the figure & not expose it.
so not only do you think saying that camp camp is appropriate in it’s treatment of jewish generational trauma & suffering because it’s for “comedy” & that their hitler stand in was “the real butt of the joke” while being written by two white goyim  —  miles has called himself white multiple times & is a white hispanic, not your moc king  —  but now you are also using slurs & speaking on romani people to drag down an au you don’t like. pure gadje clown behaviour tbh.

Romani & Latvian Traditional Wear
Tumblr media
Traditional wear for Romani people can differ amongst other tribes, however it is still recognisable. The Romani people like to present their status and wealth throughout their clothing as the women would usually wear gold necklaces, earrings, rings and headscarf with gold coins known as the Dikhlo. Long skirts were also an essential and Romani women would avoid trousers at the time.
