A History of the Bikini in Bollywood

Sharmila Tagore's appearance in a one-piece swimsuit in An Evening in Paris (1967) + her bikini photoshoot for Filmfare magazine set off a cultural wave in India due to it being the first public depiction of an Indian actress in a swimsuit.

The costumes shocked conservative Indian audiences, who had never seen an actress dressed so boldly. It set a trend of bikini-clad actresses, such as Parveen Babi (in Yeh Nazdeekiyan, 1982), Zeenat Aman (in Heera Panna, 1973 & Qurbani, 1980), Mumtaz (in Apradh, 1972) and Dimple Kapadia (in Bobby, 1973). Women all over the country became more inspired to dress how they desired, rather than feeling restricted by archaic tenets of modesty.

Wearing a bikini skyrocketed Sharmila’s career to the top, and she set a trend of actresses embracing a more “western” and revealing fashion aesthetic. The move was a transgression of female identity through a reversal of the state of modesty, which functions as a signifier of femininity in Bombay films. After these films, non-traditionally dressed female characters in Bollywood were less inclined to be depicted as “immodest” or in a derogatory manner.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is expected to be ‘an impossible love story’ as a scientist falls for a robot called Sifra.

Jio Studios and Dinesh Vijan promises audiences to present the perfect Valentine’s Day treat with Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya which is slated to release next month. The makers unveiled the trailer of the movie on January 18 and it promises to be the biggest family entertainer of the year with a sizzling romance in the centre of it. This film marks the first-time collaboration between Shahid and Kriti Sanon entwined in an ‘impossible love story’ with legendary actors, like Dharmendra and Dimple Kapadia also adding a twist to this entertaining tale.

Speaking of the trailer, it promises delightful on-screen chemistry between Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon along with offering a glimpse into the roller-coaster ride of emotions with an impossible love at the centre of it, blending it in essences of humor and relatable family moments, thus making it entertaining for all ages.
