Dinovember day 19: Argentinosaurus
The first Argentinosaurus bone, now thought to be a calf bone, was discovered in 1987 by Guillermo Heredia on his farm in Argentina. He initially believed that the bones he had discovered were petrified logs.

Whelp we’ve got about a week and a half til November (aaaaaah), so I guess I’ll post this year’s Archovember list now!
It’s a bit dinosaur-heavy this time, but there are a lot of species I’d really like to try my hand at! Also, we have two leptoceratopsians and two Araripesuchus species. I thought it would be interesting to compare and contrast these species within the same month, so I hope it doesn’t get /too/ repetitive!
For new folks: this is my “Draw Dinovember” list that I expanded out to include other archosauriforms. I started doing this a few years ago to challenge myself to draw species I’ve never drawn before and/or ones that don’t get a lot of attention. Feel free to join in! You can do the whole list, just the dinosaurs, just the pterosaurs, just the pseudosuchians, just your favorites, just ones you’ve never drawn before, roll a D20 and a D10 and draw the sum of whichever numbers you get, etc. Just make sure they’re posted on or after their specific day so I remember to share them on my blog! You can use #Archovember or #Archovember2023, as those are the tags I follow. (Note that I and the whole Archovember event are usually a lot more active on Instagram so if you have an IG I encourage you to join in there!)
Anyway, here is the list in case the graphic is hard to read:
1. Your Choice!
2. Furcatoceratops elucidans
3. Tupandactylus navigans
4. Deinosuchus hatcheri
5. Herrerasaurus ischigualastensis
6. Lewisuchus admixtus
7. Supersaurus vivianae
8. Zhejiangopterus linhaiensis
9. Dynamosuchus collisensis
10. Megalosaurus bucklandii
11. Macrospondylus bollensis
12. Miragaia longicollum
13. Dorygnathus banthensis
14. Leptoceratops gracilis
15. Stagonolepis robertsoni
16. Shantungosaurus giganteus
17. Paleorhinus bransoni
18. Cascocauda rong
19. Kelenken guillermoi
20. Prestosuchus chiniquensis
21. Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis
22. Istiodactylus latidens
23. Kunbarrasaurus ieversi
24. Araripesuchus wegeneri
25. Tylocephale gilmorei
26. Ixalerpeton polesinensis
27. Udanoceratops tschizhovi
28. Tapejara wellnhoferi
29. Araripesuchus rattoides
30. Scutellosaurus lawleri
One last note, and a warning I usually issue to new paleoartists: while looking for references for these species you’ll come across David Peters. His references tend to dominate search results when looking for less well-known species. They are also highly inaccurate, even the skeletals. So make sure you omit “The Pterosaur Heresies” and “Reptile Evolution” from your google search. If you have issues finding references, let me know and I can share what I’m using!

Dinovember Days 15-21 (details below)
6 Card Standard spread with Magician significator:
"You are at the very start of your journey. Willful and self aware, you know that there are things you must learn and internalize before you reach your ultimate goal. Obsession may overcome your worldly attachments as you pore over every detail, illuminate every dark corner of your ignorance. If you lose yourself to this pursuit, though, you may lose your attachment to the people and things you value most in the here and now."
Based on @1dinodaily's dinovember prompts!
Day 15: Struthiomimus/The Fool Day 16: Bay Owl/The Lovers Day 17: Balaur/The Star Day 18: Common Loon/The Moon Day 19: Pyroraptor/The Sun Day 20: Liliensternus/The Devil Day 21: Anchiornis/The Magician
Standard Six Card Spread: Significator: (The Magician) A card to represent the asker Card 1 (The Fool): How the asker feels about themselves Card 2 (The Lovers): What the asker want most right now Card 3 (The Star): The asker's current fears Card 4 (The Moon): What is going right for them Card 5 (The Sun): What is going against them Card 6 (The Devil): Future and outcomes My spouse does tarot for funsies and provided the quoted reading. He also let me use his Ryder-Waite deck to design the cards. This was a super fun prompt and I was glad to combine this week into a single read.

I tried my hardest to keep the symbolism of the cards but remove all the human-created objects. I also used the same limited palette of the Ryder-Waite deck (tho I added some additional shades of grey). The owl skull on the Lovers was just cause it looked cool.

I can assure you this Edaphosaurus that I drew in the corner of my notebook is going to be 10 times better than anything I’ll do for Dinovember next month (ft. Pterygotus)
Also this is the first time I’ve posted art to tumblr for a while; as I’ve said, I’m going to be doing Dinovember next month so you’ll probably see more of my silly doodles in the future. Stay tuned!!

DINOVEMBER DAY 1: 520MYA, STAGE 3 OF THE CAMBRIAN; YUNNAN, CHINA
It is the Cambrian period, and the warm sunlit seas of Southern China are home to a vibrant sponge-reef brimming with life. The creatures of the Cambrian are strange to us in the Holocene, as this period of time is a time of great experimentation in bodyplans thanks to the evolution of a very special type of organ: eyes. Predators can now see their prey, and vice versa, so the pace of life has sped up considerably, and everyone has had to adapt. Many organisms now have hard shells, spiny defences, or increased mobility to protect themselves from these new sighted predators.
One such predator is this Lyrarapax, cruising through a small group of Haikouichthys. You might be more familiar with her Canadian cousin Anomalocaris. At around half a metre long, Lyrarapax is one of the top predators of the Chengjiang biota; her strange arm like protrusion are derived from the filter feeding appendages of her ancestors, and she uses them to grab prey such as trilobites and pass them to the crushing wheel-like mouth on the underside of her head.
Arthropods like her dominate the Cambrian seas, and along with cephalopod molluscs, will rule the Ordovician as well. Primitive chordates like Haikouichthys will remain in their shadow… for now.

OH MY GOD GUYS????? NEW PREHISTORIC DOCUMENTARY FEATURING NIGEL MARVEN????
Seriously though, Agate looks to be an amazing project, with three 15 minute episodes taking us on a tour of Miocene Nebraska. It’s a crowdfunded project, so if you can spare the change, go and check out their kickstarter!

Oof, November is already one week away. This year went so fast…
In any case, this means it is time for another Archovember!
If you’re new here, this is my version of Draw Dinovember that I started doing four years ago to challenge myself to draw not only dinosaurs but other Archosauromorphs that I have less practice with. It usually features a somewhat even mix of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, pseudosuchians, and a handful of oddball outliers.
Anyone can feel free to join in! I will be most active on my Instagram (SaritaPaleo), sharing art of the featured species for the day in my story, including that of anyone who joins in and uses the tag(s). But you can certainly post any of your submissions here too! The animal prompt for each day should be posted on or after their specific day, but can be drawn at any time. You can also join in at any time and don’t necessarily have to draw every animal. The point is to have fun and learn about some interesting prehistoric critters!
In case the graphic is hard to read, here is the list:
1. Your Choice!
2. Dino - Qianzhousaurus sinensis
3. Ptero - Hatzegopteryx thambema
4. Croc - Mahajangasuchus insignis
5. Other - Yarasuchus deccanensis
6. Dino - Regaliceratops peterhewsi
7. Ptero - Dearc sgiathanach
8. Croc - Carnufex carolinensis
9. Other - Doswellia kaltenbachi
10. Dino - Ceratosaurus nasicornis
11. Ptero - Batrachognathus volans
12. Croc - Sebecus icaeorhinus
13. Dino - Lambeosaurus lambei
14. Other - Proterosuchus fergusi
15. Ptero - Ferrodraco lentoni
16. Dino - Shuvuuia deserti
17. Croc - Shamosuchus djadochtaensis
18. Ptero - Caviramus schesaplanensis
19. Dino - Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum
20. Croc - Arizonasaurus babbitti
21. Other - Smok wawelski
22. Dino - Kentrosaurus aethiopicus
23. Ptero - Sordes pilosus
24. Croc - Burkesuchus mallingrandensis
25. Dino - Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis
26. Other - Chanaresuchus bonapartei
27. Dino - Animantarx ramaljonesi
28. Ptero - Quetzalcoatlus lawsoni
29. Croc - Batrachotomus kupferzellensis
30. Dino - Concavenator corcovatus
(Also, for new paleoartists: as a heads up when looking for refs you will come across David Peters. It is ill-advised to use any refs from the websites “pterosaur heresies” and “reptile evolution” as all those skeletals come from him and his own personal imagining of the tree of life and are usually pretty innacurate. If you have any trouble finding accurate references, I am more than happy to share the ones I’ll be using!)
