here's a tip about working with Dionysos that nobody asked for
invoke him using epithets, and be specific
like maybe don't call on Zagreus the Hunter to bless your grapevine - consider Korymbophoros the Cluster-Laden
I generally wouldn't call on Chthonios of the Underworld to bless your theatrical production - Dithyrambos the Hymned is a more appropriate option
Meilichios the Gentle might not be the best aspect to call on before attending a protest with heavy police presence - for that, consider Lyseus the Liberator
does this make sense? call on him using epithets! always always use epithets if you can manage it, be specific about what aspect you want to talk to - he is Polynomos and Polymorphos, Many-Named and Multiply-Born for a reason
there are exceptions, obviously, where you could get really specific about why for example Chthonios IS the best aspect to bless your musical (maybe you're doing Hadestown?) but put some thought into it
try and match the epithets to what it is you're trying to accomplish or honor, rather than choosing them at random or based on how they sound sonically or how badass they seem
that's it, that's the tip
easy, simple, effective
have fun

Something for my close friend, Arja (@greypetrel of the @thelastbacchae); as her birthday is coming soon, and I hoping that all of these three gods bring us a good year, too. ❤️💕
Dionysus's golden grapevine patterned vest was inspired by the maximalist designs of the Indian fashion designer, Rahul Mishra and his runway exhibition in The Tree Of Life, Couture 2022. And for the surrounding background, I was inspired by modern minimalist industrial club design; mixing with the Mediterranean background that the gods was born and raised in; and some vibrant tropical foliage. (a nod of his travelings to the East) I had to admit that, since Dionysos and Ariadne themselves were too versatile and multifaceted as gods with beautiful contrasts historically; choosing their outfit and their own sense of fashion styles in order to echoing their juxtaposition is very difficult; beside normal club fashion styles. Transhuman, transgender, transnational, transboundary and always in transitory places between the liberating pure chaotic madness and the core of human civilization.
P/S: Also to Arja herself, drawing them makes me miss the times that I often go out and club with friends, tbh.

idk how to tell y’all this but a Greek god not having a lot of lovers isn’t indicative of their morality. And a god not having a lot written about them isn’t indicative of their morality. It’s actually really hard to find them good or bad. Because they are gods. And they do terrifying things to cement their authority. And there are many legends. And many of those legends are allegorical. Some of those legends weren’t even part of the actual religious perception. This is not exclusive to the Greek pantheon. I did not grow up around infinite Christian denominations that hated me in infinite separate ways to pretend I think otherwise

Mycogenous – a book exploring Dionysos in the fungal realm
This isn't my book. This is Dver's book. And it is something she has been working on for some time as part of her devotion to Dionysos.
"Dionysos has always come first for me – I discovered Him before I was even properly pagan, and He was the first god I came to when I started studying polytheist traditions, and has remained by far the most important god to me, sometimes almost to the point of henotheism. I think of myself as a Dionysian as much as anything; He is at the core of who I am. And yet, all these years, everything I’ve written, and only now have I finally created a book entirely dedicated to Him. Only now do I feel I have something to say, to share, to offer those looking to connect with Him. Something very special to me."
This is a different Dionysos than most people encounter. This is not the Dionysos of the revelry, of the enthused intoxication, of the excess of movement and sound and action.
"For this Dionysos is not the familiar god of the wild animal, or the verdant vine, but rather a fungal god – not just symbolically but literally. He is the Dionysos that brings life out of death, that dissolves boundaries, that opens doors, that effects transformation…all through the varied manifestations of the fungal kingdom. And no, I am not just referring to mushrooms (mind-altering or otherwise), although they are part of it. I’m also talking about the kind of fungus that rots the dead, the kind that intertwines with trees, the kind that turns grapes into wine, the kind that heals, the kind that destroys, the kind that spreads and changes everything it touches. I have taken to calling Him by the title Mycogenous Dionysos."
This is not a history book. Not an art book. Not a text book of spells and rituals. This is a devotional.
"In this book, I use a combination of prose, poetic allusion, and visual art to convey something of what I have experienced and learned, in hopes of helping the mycelium of Mycogenous Dionysos to spread. I don’t know who, if anyone, will feel called to this path, or resonate with it, or be taken wholly by it as I have, but I know I need to put it out there. I need to release the spores; it is not up to me where they land."

Mycogenous 7.5×7.5 inches, 82 pages, 80# semi-gloss paper, matte casewrap hardcover "Incorporates reproductions of several original ink and brush illustrations created for this project, as well as three tipped-in color plates of masks I made several years ago as I began delving further into this path."
Available only in Dver's Etsy shop
As always, I would appreciate any help spreading the word about this, as I do not have social media or any other way to communicate beyond this blog and my shop. While I wrote this for polytheists and especially for Dionysians, I do wonder how it might resonate with those unfamiliar with the god but drawn to fungi or spiritually connected to nature, so please feel free to disseminate beyond the pagan world.

screaming forever about the relationship between Dionysos and Pentheus in Euripides' Bacchae ... and how Dionysos tried to tell Pentheus who he was (queer, containing multitudes) ... and how Pentheus ran in fear from these realizations ... but in running, in not embracing who he was, he became a monstrous version of what he feared (dressed as a maenad, torn to pieces)......
and then screaming forever at how this esoteric knowledge about *self* was so important that it was codified throughout the Greek speaking world, so that even the "Gnostic" Gospel of Thomas contains this line, "If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you".
yeah. just screaming forever.

thank you. Dionysos definitely gives me "chronically weak for women who can pummel you" vibes.
also, Dionysos worshippers who haven't included Her in your worship before,,,, do it. seriously—even if it's very minor, She is a phenomenal influence to have around. plus, the gleeful way they act around each other is absolutely contagious.

Torn Skin Hymn
Sweeter Prayers to Dionysos
They tell me not to pray on my knees: “Stand tall before God. Do not make yourself small.” But scraped knees are still sacred to me; a prayer that overtakes my body long before words come to me, released from its refuge somewhere deep inside stained-glass muscle memory.
If God is in the ground, in the dirt and clay, I kiss Him with torn skin as I fall to it.
It makes no difference if you make yourself small before God or stand tall; you are always small before God. This is the most basic lesson of faith. There is no looking God in the eye. There is only asking God to handle us gently with impossibly large hands. There is only asking God to make the smallness holy.

hm. random thought after about half a bottle of wine but: being queer is so holy and even though it's hard, i'm so glad it's a part of me, and it can never be erased. like, Dionysos was actively transgressive when it came to the society He lived in: respected women, let them leave their homes, effeminate, bottom (canonically too), lived as a woman in His childhood, and for a society like Greece that valued GRRR MASCULINE MANLY MEN, it's a bit surprising that Dionysos' queerness has made it to the modern day. i share, in some sense, in that same queerness that ran through the streets of ancient Greece, that scandalized cities by being a freeing force, that tenderly held lovers. and that queerness will live even after i'm gone as well :)
