I feel like folks who are disappointed that trying to escalate physical confrontations in Disco Elysium often results in Harry getting clowned regardless of how many points you put into physical skills are not fully grasping the "you are a middle-aged alcoholic with a heart condition who is currently experiencing the withdrawal symptoms of every drug" dimension of the game's premise.

before I played Disco Elysium, I thought Harry du Bois was a co-worker in the precinct you work at and, reading about him being such a fucked up guy, I was literally planning on avoiding him as much as possible in my playthrough... colour me surprised when I found the badge and found out the main character's name

Harry is just so fucking lonely and miserably sad and now he's finally had a taste of stable friendship again with Kim, he thinks he's about to lose it all and die on him - proven a failure one last time - and his way of verbalising that grief is like a mopey kid who never gets invited to anything, who never got to live their life to the fullest. he's a grown man who was born like a week ago for christs sake. he's a manchild.

it's just such a desperate and innocent line to me

he just wants to party with someone. he just wants a friend.

god dammit.

I love how you can get through to Garte, one good deed at a time. And I love how, even if you do, he's still very willing to point out when you mess up.
