How to detect scam links in discord

i just learned how people make scam links in discord appear legit (for the untrained eye)

It's very easy to find the way to do it actually (it's slightly modified markdown), but as for how to identify it :

You can make any text clickable with a hyperlink. But a genuine link always has a header (http:// or something similar). Now discord has a security in that aspect : you cannot put a hyperlink on top of an actual link, so the only way for you to make a fraudulous link appear like it links to a genuine url (like the steam gift card example I saw today, which had all the normal steamcommunity.com url you'd expect from a legit link to a Steam page), you have to cut the header off.

Which means your link will look like this : url.somewhere.com

Instead of this : https://url.somewhere.com

(by the way, in the url of pages you're using, Google Chrome usually hides the protocol in the header, rather telling you whether or not the page you're on is secure or not. This is not great, as it is not showing what a complete link looks like, and makes people more likely to not see anything wrong with a url that does not have a header. Firefox always shows it, and anyone should be used to seeing the header in a url.)

So any hyperlink (clickable link) without a header is most likely a scam. Discord automatically detects a url via its header, it cannot link to anything without it, so not seeing it is a red flag. But wait there's more ! When you hover over a hyperlink, it shows you the url it links to. If you hid it with text, it will show you both the text and the url.

If the url at the bottom is any different to the text, the person who posted it is trying to trick you.

Obviously, never click a "free steam gift card $50" link from anyone on a public server, but if you want to better identify any form of fraudulous link that could be shared on discord, this is the best way to tell if it actually links to what is says.

but theres also - unordered - list - with sub lists (two spaces before) - tumblr also has ordered lists but it auto formats that, but just adding "1. " or whatever number to the beginning of a line

So there was another Server event on discord where we were given different color palettes to create a Pretty Cure fan series, my palette being; Royal Blue, Teal, Lime Green, Fuchsia, Orange. Using those colors i whipped up;

Synopsis:

While working on a mandatory cyber group project, Hitomi stumbles upon an ancient hard drive with coordinates to the Mysterious abandoned dorm where she meets the enigmatic PEIR (PEIROVACS), an advanced AI who presents her the Hyperlink-Cell and tasks her with restoring balance to a parallel dimension known as the Primeval Colossus Realm. Realizing she can't do it alone, she invites her group mates —Yasuko, Sara, Kaori, and Jina to help her with this mission. As they transform into Cures they form the Cyber Rift Pretty Cure Code: Kaiju. Will they be able to stop the realm from colliding, save the corrupted Kaiju’s. LOTR Newsletter 3 Shire Drift - FAQ

Hello everyone!

Just like last year: for those of you who are already familiar with The Lord of the Rings Newsletter, this serves as an announcement that I'm doing it again; and for those who aren't - an introduction to the project :)

What is LOTR Newsletter?

I'm one of the people who subscribed to Dracula Daily in May 2022, and immediately thought, "Hey, I can do this too but with XYZ!" - XYZ being The Lord of the Rings. Because the events of LOTR also have specific dates ascribed to them, we're gonna be reading LOTR as it happened.

When does it take place?

Because of the way the beginning of LOTR is structured (read: because I don't want to leave six-month-long breaks between the first entries), we're gonna start on September 15th - a week before September 22nd, when the main events start to take place. It's also the publishing date of the Silmarillion, but that's just a fun fact for my own enjoyment.

From September 15th to September 19th, we'll read the prologue, and the fragments preceding Frodo's departure from the Shire. From September 20th, we'll be reading according to the dates in the book until April 8th. Then we'll be reading last parts of the book - which are stretched over a long time - once a week, to once again avoid lengthy breaks in delivery.

The Newsletter will last from September 15th to May 26th.

Where do I go if I want to post/talk about something related to the Newsletter with other readers?

We discuss current (and not only current) entries in the #lotr newsletter tag, and we have a Discord server set by the amazing @k-she-rambles! (I really hope this time I managed to generate a link that never expires...)

How do I subscribe?

Since the original platform I was using (TinyLetter) was shut down halfway through the second year of the newsletter, I had to figure out an alternative way to execute this project.

For the lovely people who joined the last edition of the newsletter, just a short announcement - I weighed all the pros and cons and decided to continue carrying out the newsletter the way I did after TinyLetter shut down.

For the new folks, a lengthier explanation: check out this post if you want to learn the details, but long story short: I can't send the newsletter as e-mails anymore, so instead I decided to provide you with a ready copy of the entire thing. I prepared formatted copies of the whole newsletter - September 15th to May 26th - as an .odt file, as a .pdf file, and most importantly as an .epub file, because I assume most of you are reading on your phones (if you don't already have an .epub reader, I use FBReader, and everything worked fine on my phone). At the beginning you'll find the whole table of contents with hyperlinks, so the navigation inside the document should be easy!

The MEGA folder can be accessed right here, and it's available for everyone!

In the folder linked, you'll also find a calendar file made by @none-ofthisnonsense that you can download on your phone and import into your calendar app so that all days when we read are marked in your calendar!

If you want to receive notifications about when there is an entry to read, you can also follow @is-today-a-lotr-newsletter-day and turn on notifications! This is a blog created solely for notifying you all when we're reading a new fragment of the newsletter, so all notifications you'll get will be about new entries, and nothing more. The notifications are meant to be the equivalent of sending e-mails.

update:

as for section 230: i'm not sure what's happening with them, and the repeal option. there hasn't been any news about it for some reason. however, that shouldn't stop any of you from calling. so, if you're able to, please call your representatives.

in other news, the bad internet bills website updated with more bills, and more info. i recommend checking the page out, if you have time to do so.

they're going for the take it down act, which is another excuse to remove free speech for all, because our current president is a pissbaby, that can't take the fact that he's not a great person, by any definitions of the word. again, if you have the time, please take a look into this other website, along with this other site that talks about section 230, and why it's important.

here's the people who are currently in support of this bill. please call them by going to either the main bad internet bill link, or the take it down act, which should be highlighted as the second hyperlink.

it has been exactly a year since i posted the pre-prologue and started my comic journey! i'm grateful for the support and for the love this comic has received. I never expected it to be a big thing, it was supposed to just be a fun little practice comic but it's become something a lot bigger! I put a lot of time and effort in it so i am really happy that it is so widely received.

we talked in the SBC Discord server for a bit about what do do for a celebration and eventually landed on doing a one-shot comic in a sort of MAP-style; every panel being a different artist/team of artists. Salt&Hollow's first date was the topic we landed on. everybody put tons of love and effort into their panels and i'm incredibly happy with the outcome, the come-together of different styles and mediums is one of my favorite things that the Warriors fandom excels at.

Sorry for the extra anon about this, I know y'all are sick of all the asks being focused on this dumbass issue.

But I cannot see ANYTHING in that dictionary link reply that could come off as mean. Mousemod didn't even share them in a "check the dictionary you fucking tool" kinda way. She literally said, 'hey, yeah, this word has mutliple connotations depending on context, and these dictionary sites keep word meanings up to date and accurate, so they're good sources to use to check that.'

There was no talking down, there was no like. "This word does not mean what you think it does" (hyperlinked to dictionary definition).

Maybe I've just spent too many years on Reddit and Discord, but this does not strike me as aggressive or condescending at all. It was actually pretty flowery for a moderator of a large group.

So, TL;DR, what are we on about again?
