Twoflower Checks Out Rincewind's Behind
I mean, what else would he be looking at with 'some interest' but what Rincewind just mentioned?
Also, 'bang'

Hey Discworld fans! Where's a good place to start? There's like 40 or something books and it doesn't seem they have to be read in chronological order? Or? I want to start with one that stands the best chance of reeling me in for the rest.
#I'm listening to audiobooks now instead of podcasts on my commute#figured I'd give this a try#discword#terry pratchett#my stuff

Coppers liked to say that people shouldn't take the law into their own hands, and they thought they knew what that meant. But they were thinking about peaceful times, and men who went around to sort out a neighbor with a club because his dog had crapped once too often on their doorstep. But at times like these, who did the law belong to? If it shouldn't be in the hands of the people, where the hell should it be? People who knew better? Then you get Winder and his pals, and how good was that?

“There was no actual rule, Downey had to admit. It was just that, over the years, the Guild had developed a certain ethos and members tended to be very neat about their work, even shutting doors behind them and generally tidying up as they went. Hurting the harmless was worse than a transgression against the moral fabric of society, it was a breach of good manners. It was worse even than that. It was bad taste. But there was no actual rule…”
The difference between Downey and Vetinari is all here: Downey will follow the rules in the name of the good taste, Vetinari because he’s paid for just one inhumation.

The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents is on Hulu in the States right now. I watched it and, you guys, it’s so good. You can tell it was made by people with real love and affection for the source material and the author. There are delicious little nods to the Discworld at large and Terry.
The animation is lovely and squishy and Maurice is a glorious ginger chonk. It’s softened and streamlined a bit here and there but the adaptations all make sense ( and make for an improved movie ) and it’s not sickeningly twee despite being solidly kid friendly. There are some of the hints of horror from the book. The Clan have distinct designs and personalities. Voice acting is fantastic.
If they had put half this amount of love and attention to detail into adapting The Watch, I seriously would have exploded from sheer joy.

I've been listening to Men at Arms (again) and I'm wondering - does the gonne speak to everybody? Vetinari gave it to the Assassins' Guild, means he had to hold it... and whoever he gave it to had to hold it, too. They obviously didn't kill anybody. Does it only speak when it's loaded? Or are some people more immune to its voice?
Also, why preserve the bullets, too? And quite many of them, it would seem.
Havelock, you kind of messed this up.
I guess he couldn't bring himself to destroy it, and neither could the person he gave it to. So they were not perfectly immune.
End of incoherent ramblings.
I'm sure somebody gave it a thought and came to a logical conclusion. :-)

Samuel Vimes - Commander of Ankh Morpork city Watch and Duke is one of the best character that sir Terry could wrote.
Because he developed a lot: he atop drinking, he cleaned himself and he start doing the job that he’s in front of him.
And he’s trying doing better because of the bad work he did in the past, even if it wasn’t completely his fault. And even if he understands everybody else reason, he didn’t allow himself an excused.
What a police - men!

In the amazing Maurice and his escapes rodents" they talk about a plan to move to an island and make a rat civilization with no humans.
I've just realized that this may be. Reference/nod/inspired by "Mrs frisby and the rats of nymh". The rats in that book go to a valley to make there civilization, but it feels related.
I guess I'll need to continue this reread and see if there is more evidence of that.

[ID: two traditional, similar drawings of Polly from Terry Pratchett's "Monstrous Regiment". She's drawn from the waist upwards, turned at a 45° angle towards the left side of the picture. In the first picture she has long hair and is dressed in simple clothing. In the second picture her hair is cropped short and she's wearing her military uniform. End ID]
