More LOST DISNEY ART. (Brush Pen Ink and Watercolor 1994) I know... the title is a little "click-baity". Technically this work is not lost -- I'm sure the originals are buried somewhere in the vaults at Imagineering, but these drawings haven't been seen in nearly 30 years. It was before the digital age, so hard copies of these drawings remained in my flat file tucked away inside a manilla folder mis-labelled "Tokyo roughs". I found them by chance while going through my files looking for theme park work for my website, www.vignalistudio.com The Big Idea: Legendary Disney Imagineer Eddie Sotto had come up with an idea called Pirate's Island where we were going to revamp Tom Sawyer Island (TSI) at Disneyland and turn it into a pirate's lair. This was back in 1994, waaay before the Pirates of the Caribbean movies... so the idea was truly ahead of its time. At the center Eddie imagined there would be a large cavern where the pirates had brought their booty, and in it was built a bar where guests could dine. Eddie had asked me to come up with some ideas for things to put in the bar, I sketched out several things...and that's when I thought of these lovely ship's figureheads. I worked them out in color so we could add this to our pitch. I even remember I had roughed out the entire bar and was planning to do one of those large drawings of the interior... unfortunately soon afterwards the project was scrapped. Eddie's Pirate's Island was a great idea that was short lived... but the big-idea was so strong that when the Pirates of the Caribbean movie came out this idea resurfaced and TSI was finally turned into Pirate's Lair. Working with Eddie was one of the highlights at Disney Imagineering. His imagination and energy was infectious, and his ability to ideate with a pen really did teach me the importance of moving quickly to visualize the entire project.

Let’s talk about Mickey And Minnie’s Runaway Railway! (Some small spoilers!)

Wow! What an incredible Attraction. I was lucky enough to score a fastpass and I only waited for about 15 minutes. I would definitely wait in Standby, it’s that worth it.

It starts off with an incredible pre-show that will blow your mind! As soon as you walk out of the pre-show you have about 5 minutes till you board the ride. Look around for the cute posters around the que.

Once you get to the front you are then met with a train that is just breathtaking to see! The doors open and your adventure starts! You’re going to have the song “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” suck in your head for WEEKS! Get ready for your face to hurt after this magical experience. 😊❤️

Imagine Jim having a crush on you

You were staying in the inn for a couple of weeks to work on your writing.

It would take you a few days for you to notice since he was shy and standoffish at first, grumpy even.

But it didn’t deter you from being cheerful and polite as always. Anytime he said something cynical you retorted it brightly. “Another glorious morning,” he grumbled sarcastically at the rain beating against the window. “It’s good for the flowers though,” you answered, “we wouldn’t have any without the rain.”

He was curious about how you didn’t treat him any differently, even though he knew you knew about his past. About how you had this unwavering air of sunshine about you and it made his chest ache.

You began to pick up on how he stared at you from the other side of the room, only to quickly look away...and back again.

He made a point of always being the one to serve you even when it would have been easier for someone else who was not yielding a close to toppling amount of trays with food to do it. He made awkward jokes about how much orange juice you drank or how you liked your waffles a little burned.

Your fingers touched as you handed him your plate back, and his eyes widened and cheeks reddened as he muttered an apology but you just smiled. He would walk out of his way around all the other tables to check up on you with every order he took, with a quip trying to make you giggle.

The first day of sunshine you saw an egg up of flowers appear on only your table. Yellow and purple; just as you had mentioned were your favourite colours. He made sure you noticed them, “turns out you were right”, he smirked.

On the day your male friend came to take you out for the day you noticed Jim clenching his teeth and glowering at him while he handed him his coffee to go. When you returned that night Jim was passed out asleep in what looked like a very uncomfortable position across two chairs by the fire. It seemed like he was waiting up to make sure you got home safe. You gently woke him to suggest he might prefer to go to bed, but he insisted he wasn’t a bit sleepy, only resting his eyes and asked you to stay and chat a while... but only if you wanted. He smelled of woodsmoke he had been waiting so long.

You talked until dawn, with Jim asking you as many questions as he could squeeze in- how were you always so happy at breakfast time? What did that crystal around your neck do-other than look pretty? So that guy today was definitely, definitely only a friend? Where did you grow up? Was everyone there as positive as you? If someone was interested...where could they read your work? He knew the whole island inside out...would you perhaps like a tour?

Later that week he showed you his home made hover board and was self deprecating. But when you enthused at how it worked and his craftsmanship he would begin to excitedly babble at how many trials it actually took to get it to balance properly without going in circles when the weight shifted. He would show you his other gadgets and tools and talk about how he dreamed of a lot more than the inn...and how nobody had ever asked him about these things before.

By the time he was done he was disappointed it was dark out, but he lit up when you suggested going on the tour anyway admiring your sense of adventure. “You really do have it all,” he muttered thinking you couldn’t hear him.

As you flew through the cold night air, over surf spray and crumbling cliffs he would point out constellations and you would tell him their stories. You noticed the tighter you held onto his chest the more he would show off, doing tricks and spins to make you squeal with equal fright and delight.

When eventually you came in to land he wouldn’t unprise your fingers from him, and would wait for you to do it.

As you stepped off the board to catch your breath he looked at you a moment in the moonlight, and then still riding high in his surge of adrenaline he took your head in both his hands and pulled you in tight for your first kiss...
