this year i learned that there's a thing called "permanent alimony" (support paid to the lesser-earning spouse until the death of the payor, the death of the recipient, or the remarriage of the recipient). that alone is reason to NOT get married. nahhhh.

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez: Navigating an Amicable Divorce
Pop sensation Ariana Grande and real estate agent Dalton Gomez have gracefully navigated their recent divorce, setting an example of maturity and respect amidst celebrity breakups. Their whirlwind romance, from dating in early 2020 to a lavish May 2020 wedding in California, captivated fans worldwide. However, news of their separation surfaced in July 2023, although legal records reveal the split occurred earlier in February that year.
Despite the public spotlight, Grande and Gomez swiftly and amicably settled their divorce, largely thanks to a prenuptial agreement that streamlined financial matters. The terms of their settlement include Grande paying Gomez a tax-free sum of $1.25 million and both sharing proceeds from the sale of their Los Angeles home. Additionally, Grande agreed to cover part of Gomez's legal fees, showcasing their commitment to a fair resolution.
Both parties have moved forward post-divorce, with Grande linked to her "Wicked" co-star Ethan Slater while Gomez maintains a private life. Described by insiders as "caring and respectful" throughout the process, Grande and Gomez have demonstrated maturity and dignity, proving that even in the spotlight, endings can be harmonious and dignified.

Surviving After Divorce
You've survived the divorce and now you're concerned about how to make your settlement last. You know the amount of your divorce settlement—but what you don't know is whether it will be enough to cover your day-to-day living expenses, support your family and have enough money for the rest of your life! You have to make sure that you don't outlive your assets. How can you ensure that you can keep the assets you most treasure, rather than having to sell them to survive?
Living alone after your divorce may be difficult—especially if you had a long marriage—financially and emotionally.  Most women can expect to spend at least a third of their adult lives on their own. Because of this, they must get savvy about saving and budgeting. Saving sounds simple, but first you have to have enough income to save some of it.
The first step you must take is creating a budget.  These are some ideas of how to create a budget:
1. Make a list of the budget categories that apply to you;
2. Go through your checkbook for the past year and list each check under its category;
3. Go through your credit card bills and do the same thing;
4. Decide where you need to cut back and which ones you expect will increase;
5. Adjust and readjust the figures until your monthly budget equals your monthly income.

July 11, 1986
Now it’s past noon. I’m at the Blackwater Cafe in Stockton.
On the bathroom wall was written “Man thinks he sits and time passes. Time thinks  that it is man  that passes while time sits..  Also, written on the wall “I’m not straight. I’m not gay. I’m Bi. Does that mean I’ve got the best of both worlds?"  I wrote on the wall “YOU BET!” (I’ve never written on a bathroom wall before.) Beautiful faces  had been drawn on the wall, also.
There is a nice writing bar here. Pleasant. I sit with a Golden Gate beer (first I’ve ever had) and a cheese croissant, my diary and my books.
I’m here to meet my X wife lawyer for an exchange of property per the divorce settlement agreement.
Just traded chairs for a bowl, and boxes of relationship fallout.  The box included mashed photos of our wedding. I told my X wife's lawyer, that I still love my X wife. It was a successful marriage. It just ended. We were two independent people. Neither my X wife or I will ever be in a marriage with anyone  again (that probably is not true). She said that my X wife had hated me, but, now, has forgiven me and hopes that I am well. My X wife finds it hard to believe that I  feel for her welfare. It’s probably best I don’t try to strike up a friendship with her. “Those things usually don’t work out” per her lawyer. She went on to say  " Give me your address  and I’ll give her the option of contacting you. She is happy that you are moving to Sacramento.”  And, so on.
I gave her lawyer a metal box as a momento. She left her husband under similar circumstances. She understood. She was nice.
Bob Dillon wails  at Blackwater Cafe “How does it feel. Out on your own, like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone? "
It feels great.
End of this part of entry
Note:
I assume I meant when I said that my X wife's lawyer left her husband under similar circumstances, that she left because he came out as gay, she came out as gay, or, the both did!
I left my wife in 1984 a few weeks after I had come out to her as being gay.

I desperately hope they keep the detail of sally selling Gabe’s statue because there is something so hilarious about that woman opening her front door, seeing that her ex-husband has been Medusa-ed, and going “you know I think he’d look nice at an art gallery”
It’d also be one hell of a divorce settlement and that’s what she deserves

What is capital gains tax?
Capital gains tax is a federal tax governed by the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997. Capital gains tax is payable on capital gain made by sale, disposal or transfer of most assets that were acquired after 20 September 1985.
Examples of assets that may incur capital gains tax are investment properties, shares, collectables, and art. There are also certain assets that are exempt from capital gains tax. Some examples are a person’s main residence, car, motorcycle and collectables acquired for a sum less than $500.
Capital gain is calculated as the difference between the proceeds received upon sale of the asset and the cost base of the asset. The cost base of the asset is usually the price that you acquired it for, and certain other costs associated with holding and disposing of the asset.
If an individual makes a capital gain, they are required to report this gain as a part of their income tax return. Accordingly, even though capital gains tax is assessed separately, it forms part of the individual’s income tax for that financial year.
Importantly for couples seeking a property settlement, a capital gains tax asset owned by them as joint tenants is to be treated as the couple owning the asset as tenants in common who own the asset in equal shares.

allison chronic divorcee until renee confesses and they live happily ever after but this trope is not for the angst...its for the idea of putting the foxes in multiple weddings just andreil watching allison walk down the aisle and going "five months" "i say three" and renee being the only one who's super upset over these weddings but doesn't realize she has a chance (she's the only one who has a chance)

Prenuptial Agreement
No one should get married without a Prenuptial Agreement in place! It doesn't matter how much or how little you have, you always have to protect yourself! You are making the biggest decision of your life to marry someone.
And second and sometimes third marriages—and the extended families that sometimes come with them—require financial and estate planning. Forty percent of new marriages include at least one spouse who was previously married. A Prenuptial agreement is especially a necessity when getting married after the first time.
There are two key issues every Prenup should address:
The first is how the assets will be divided in the event of a divorce or a death. The time to address this is before you get married. Divorce rates for second marriages, third marriages, etc. are even higher than those for first marriages. While you hope this marriage will work, you just never know. You should have at least three to six months before the wedding to work out the details and have the Prenup finalized.
The second is deciding how your personal accounts and other assets, such as real estate will be kept separate after marriage. It's crucial that you keep them separate.
Typically a Prenup will spell out what each partner is bringing to the marriage—including income, real estate, retirement savings—and whether each asset will be treated as separate or joint. Most important is that a prenup can shield one partner from any liabilities accumulated prior to the marriage, including student loans, credit card debt, and alimony and/or child support. It is very important that how to treat debt should be decided prior to the marriage and in the Prenup. In the event of a divorce, sometimes courts try to divide debt equally between the two parties. You have to be sure to protect yourself.
Any gifts given during the marriage should not be considered marital assets but should belong to the person receiving the gift.
More than one-third of adults said Prenups make smart financial sense, according to a Harris survey. “The time to plan for a divorce is not when you’re in a state of hate,” says Suzie Orman. You can’t fully protect yourself against a marital heartbreak, but at least you can protect your assets.
Be sure to have a divorce attorney write the Prenup. Just any attorney cannot know the specifics that have to go in one. It has to be done right so there are no loopholes. Unfortunately, in today's world, Prenups are being challenged in court.

Mum's had a stroke. Left side paralyzed. Expected to recover but time frame unsure. Her friends are looking after her (she's a retired surgeon). Am letting my sister handle it and curling up into a ball.
Kinda wish she'd kick it once and for all tbh. Not only will she not be able to work her private clinic and keep this place afloat, but it will probably be my little nest egg that goes into doing so in the interim. And then she won't be able to work as much afterwards, when she's deep in the red already.
Sane thing to do is (has always been) sell the house, pay off the bank, put the rest in an FD and live off the interest in a small flat closer to the city. Put my brother into an assisted care facility. But she won't do that as long as she's alive and will instead go even more turbo Born Again Jesus stan, keeping my brother imprisoned, abused and neglected under the iron rule of her awful housekeeper.
Otoh, if she does pop her clogs right now, our funerals are several-days long open house affairs that would be hell for my current mental stability.
Imagine being a bitch enough for it to be a toss up whether surviving is beneficial to the health and sanity of your dependents lmao.
My sister seems to have the "functional adult" thing handled for now so she's welcome to inflict her own brand of insanity on the situation. The only thing I give a damn about anymore is the poor cat and dog. I'm burnt into a charcoal smear and just...dont give a shit. Imma let it all crash and burn and then move out of the rubble into a cardboard box.
Second stroke usually comes up within two years of the first one and finishes you off. That was what happened to Dad and my MIL. So I guess it's just a matter of time before she joins her husband in hell anyway.
I just want things to stop happening for five fucking minutes man.
