Listen. I am just an endless death note AU generator. Currently I have the following going on:
Coffee shop AU but starting slightly before Light becomes Kira: Light meets this mysterious stranger who was tired/felt like adding weirdness to the world one morning and didn't choose a false name for his coffee orders, and it becomes this sort of running joke/game between them with Light trying to figure out his name or various lore about him and L finding this extremely amusing. But then Light finds the death note. L joins the case. Neither of them know this about each other yet, and as Light and L begin to suspect each other they're still keeping up the charade of casual friendship and a half-joking challenge while it takes on a whole additional dimension and they're catching feelings. Hell on earth for poor Light. They have chess sex at one point.
Death Note Randall and Hopkirk (deceased) AU: my personal favorite but extremely niche. Basically ghost L but. a Specific Flavor. Not only do I steal the rahd lore, but there are some Details (muahaha etc.) You don't need to have seen rahd to enjoy it. Here's a playlist but you could not get me to post the actual fic yet under torture
Modern day AU but the main way that this effects the plot is that Light is majorly into competitive Microsoft Excel and L is secretly the world champion that he's had an intense rivalry with ever since Light started.
Another ghost L thing but in this one L possesses Light's body after his death and now they have to Share
Similar to those time travel AUs where Light and/or L gets sent back and have to decide whether to make different decisions except it's the task force (excluding L and Light) and they have to decide whether to try to prove it and arrest him or try to help him and whether they should let Light know about this or if that would be a death sentence. Lots of problem solving, lots of decision making, Light gets to unmask <3 (This one was inspired by (but different from) a tumblr post I should add a link to if I can find it)
One where I mess with the lore so that Light is transforming into a shinigami due to the number of people he has killed (symbolism etc) but this starts right before his confinement so he has to try to hide it and it generally messes up his plans horribly because. Imagine being under constant observation by the world's greatest detective but you're literally transforming into a death god while trying to hide that anything is unusual about you at all.
"Characters watch the show" but it's characters get transported to this world and exposed to modern fandom. This takes place during the warehouse so Light's alive but Mikami is there. They're just yoinked out of there. There is another version of this that takes place during Yotsuba Arc instead.
Along similar-ish lines, a blatantly comedic fic where L reads explicit rpf about L and Kira in front of Light at one point during Yotsuba Arc and Light gets really mad about it leading to intense debate of what Kira would be like in bed, among other things. Keep in mind Light does not have his memories but he does have strong opinions on the topic, for some mysterious reason that Light tries really hard to justify to himself
And more. I love making things worse for my poor little meow meow specifically because I understand his brand of problem solving on a spiritual level and I like to watch it play out. But also because pushing Light to his extremes and seeing how much it takes for him to snap is like crack to me. Mentally putting this guy in saw traps.

Happy Birthday, Mello! As promised, I created a DN sideblog for this purpose, I'm posting fanart inspired by a meronia fic- False Spring by Moontyger (aka by my favorite part from the fic, which imo perfectly describes Mello, or at the very least the way I see him):

My favorite kind of Death Note fanfic is the "Light gives up being Kira for sex" trope. I love when he's all serious about being the God of the new world but Misa just has to promise showing her tits and L says he'll eat his ass and then he IMIDIATELY GIVES UP BEING KIRA, it's so funny, 10/10

L and Light capture the Yotsuba Kira, but L finds that they may have apprehended a scapegoat. The first chapter of "Judas: The Fall of a God" is available to read now! Please hit one of the links below to read "Deadly Revival."

L finding out that you're pregnant would literally happen like this, is2g:
you have to wrap the positive pregnancy test up in a napkin that goes on his lunch tray because you know there are cameras and mics everywhere, so you have to be careful. he immediately notices the way the napkin isn't laying flat. he slyly peeks into it, knowing that it's supposed to be a secret, and when he sees what's inside, he just freezes for a second. you anxiously stand by. what's he thinking? what's he going to do? how are you guys supposed to have a kid in the middle of the kira case? what if kira finds out?
L looks up at you, cocks a brow as if to ask if it's real. you nod. curious, he spins in his chair, puts his legs down on the floor, and he leans forward so that he can put an ear on your stomach. it's too early for any signs, but he's just... thinking... he did that? you both did that? he's amazed by life. there was always that small chance that you could get pregnant, maybe neither of you should have taken the risk; but you're both silently glad you did because he smiles and faces your stomach. he sits there and stares. again, it's not obvious, but now he knows and he's thrilled. to hell with any cameras that could see him. he kisses your stomach before wrapping his arms around your body to hold you tight.
"i love you," he'd whisper only loud enough for you to hear.

꧁When You're Not There꧂
Tumblr media
Summary: Mikami has secrets to keep from his wife but makes a confession to her in a dark room.
Notes: This is a short one-shot fanfiction about Teru Mikami and Kyoko (L’s fangirl from To-Oh). To clear up any potential confusion, they are a married couple here, Mikami has the Shinigami eyes, and since Kyoko’s surname was never revealed in canon, I have declared it “Yamazaki.” I do not own Death Note or any of its characters, all rights go to Tsugumi Ohba, Takeshi Obata, and other respective owners.
‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊ ♡ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙·̩̩̥͙*̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ♡ ‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊ ♡ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ·͙*̩̩͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩̥͙·̩̩̥͙*̩̩̥͙˚̩̥̩̥*̩̩͙‧͙ °̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥ ♡ ‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊‧̍̊·̊‧̥°̩̥˚̩̩̥͙°̩̥‧̥·̊‧̍̊
Mikami is alone in their bedroom staring out the window with no lights on. Kyoko walks in and asks him what he is doing. Mikami tells her, “Nothing.”
“It’s not like you to stand around doing nothing. You’re usually doing something at your desk at this time on this day every week, every month. Why the sudden change?”
“…”
“Please, talk to me. It’s strange when you suddenly deviate from your routine. Not that I am always here to see it.”
“…It’s…” Mikami started.
He almost felt tempted to tell her what was going on but changed his mind. He decided to talk about something else instead.
“I just wanted to look outside.”
Kyoko can sense that’s not it. Despite the fact, they hadn’t been together for that long, she was starting to read him more clearly. At first it was difficult for her to predict anything because he was always stone-faced, acting stoic and dry. Well, his thoughts were difficult to predict, but his obsessive need for keeping schedules made his actions predictable. But she was getting better at noticing the subtle changes in his tone of voice and facial expressions. With him, that was the only way of telling. It helped her understand what his mood was. And she was already too used to Mikami not looking at her face when they talk to let it bother her anymore. But she also realized she was starting to pick up if he was lying to her or not. And he was definitely lying to her right now. She realized accusing him won’t help her get anything out of him, it might be better to give him reassurance.
“I can tell that’s not true…You can talk to me about anything, you know. I’m always here to listen.”
He didn’t move or say anything for about a minute. He turned and faced her. Even with no lights on, she could see he was giving her his full attention. His eyes were fixed on her, as if he saw something she couldn’t. Actually, that was the case. Mikami was staring at Kyoko’s name Mikami Kyoko and lifespan hovering over her head. He couldn’t read how many years, months, or days Kyoko had left because the number was in Shinigami time and he didn’t know how to convert it to human time. He had already cut his own remaining lifespan in half but had no idea how much time he had to live because he never knew how many years he had left before making that deal. He stared at Kyoko’s lifespan and thought about how temporary all human life was, including hers, his own. The thought of Kyoko dying made him sad.
He never fully understood his feelings toward Kyoko. He knew of her before they met in person, because of her family, and the Kira economic theory she created and wrote extensively about. They met in person, simply by chance, when they were attending Pro-Kira conventions. He almost didn’t notice her at first, she was so unnoticeable at first glance. Only after meeting her, he found out that she was unexpectedly placed in the Ministry of Defense and is currently a soldier in the Japanese Defense Forces. There she was, by herself in the corner of the room, trying not to draw attention to herself. Casually dressed, her hair undone, wearing no makeup, but her cheeks red, and her eyes facing down. He thought someone born into her privilege and status would be much more obvious, surrounded by people all the time.
When he first saw her in real life, he didn’t recognize her right away. Even though she’s only 24 years old, she looked a lot older than she really is. Her nervous, but serious and solid demeanor gave him the impression she was a principal in a school full of rowdy teenagers. He couldn’t believe that he managed to get her alone, and how easy she was to talk to. How plain she dressed was another thing he didn’t expect. He never really thought about it but perhaps he always had an image she would wear expensive dresses and diamonds in her daily private life because she was born a princess. And how normal she was, despite the Yamazaki being one of the five elite families of the country. She lived by herself in a small apartment and when he asked her why she didn’t get herself a better house, she said it was all the space she needed. Despite being able to afford it, she didn’t hire body guards, either, her reason being her life was not worth more than anyone else’s. He had never seen anyone try so hard to live as simple and minimalist as possible. She told him of her dream to make the world prosperous and peaceful enough where no one would need to resort to crime. He found her to be overly idealistic, but somehow with her intelligence, she made even seemingly unrealistic goals sound almost plausible.
He wondered what it would be like to have her in bed with him. He wanted to touch her hair and feel her skin. Also, he didn’t want to admit it to himself but she was even more beautiful in real life than on the tv screen. He knew fantasizing about her was his guilty pleasure so he tried not to look at her too much. Her body is his paradise. From the time he first saw her naked, he liked the meat on her bones, her large breasts, her waist, she was hairier than he imagined but it didn’t bother him in the least. She often defied his expectations, which further intrigued him. He came to the realization she was so similar to his mother in many ways—her mannerisms, her personality, her smile... He remembers how he used to think to himself, he would never marry a woman like his mother. Yet, he had done it. In the future, even when Kyoko is old, withered, and grey, he would still desire to lay by her side. She would always be the woman of his eyes. He would miss her if she was gone.
Back to the present, staring at her remaining lifespan, he knew the hour of her death will someday come. Even though Kyoko knew something was going on, she couldn’t guess what he could be thinking.
“I love you.”, Mikami said to her, catching her off guard.
He touched her face and the strands of Kyoko’s loose hair that was normally tied back. She blushed and stared down into the darkness. He kissed her lips and hugged her. When he held her against him, she thought about how she couldn’t remember the last time he said he loved her or touched her.
After that one month they were passionately in love and got married, they had become distant. She dismissed it as their daily lives made them too busy to spend much time together. It also didn’t help that the army required her to stay away from home for such long periods of time. Although she knew her feelings for him hadn’t changed and never would, she couldn’t be sure about his. Well…who could ever be sure of how the other person really feels? There were times she truly thought he didn’t love her as much as he once did. She wished she could fix that, she wanted to make him proud of her…but she didn’t know how. She was relieved to think that his feelings for her didn’t dry up entirely. For the first in a long time, she felt like nothing was wrong in the world, he made her feel safe with him.
“I love you, too.”, she said.

Mello had changed since Wammy’s. He’d grown quite a bit taller even though Matt still had a few inches on him. The black long sleeve t-shirt he’d always worn was replaced with a tailored leather jacket.
It looked good on him. It accentuated his angles and intensified his presence. It made a boy who was rough around the edges into a man who could cut you with a single gaze.
He had grown into himself.
He looked good.
“Took you long enough.” The blonde replied.

Promoting myself again bc I'm bored, heres my dn swap au fanfic again
So basically L is the one that ends up with the notebook and Light is the detective trying to catch him, and there's a lot of convoluted overthinking and people dying. It also features some shinigami realm shenanigans and Matt and Mello
Here's the summary and first bit of first chapter
Summary
L Lawliet is a normal- or rather, abnormal - person, who one day happens to come across a magic notebook that grants one the power to kill people simply by writing their name and knowing their face. He is unsure of what to do with it at first, but it sparks his curiosity. Lawliet then comes into contact with someone who is trying to take away his newfound power -- a detective who goes by "Moon," and just so happens to be the greatest detective in the world. What will Lawliet do about Moon in their battle of wits?
---------------------------------------------------
I possess many different traits that a lot of people may lack. For one, I am exceptionally intelligent. I don't mean to be rude but it is true, and if I am being rude, so be it. Another one I can think of is my ability to stay awake for many, many hours on end -- however, I don't think of that as a positive thing. But that has little to no relevance to this story. I've been told before that my abilities are 'amazing,' 'incredible,' or even 'rare', but I've never been told in what way I should use them. I think it's fairly obvious that I shouldn't use them to harm others, after the events regarding Beyond Birthday, but what do I do with them, then? Perhaps I'll use them for myself. After all, I am very bored.
Typically, I don't spend time outside. It could have been fate that I did today, or maybe pure coincidence. Either way... to summarize my situation, I decided to sit outside of my establishment, on a mahogany chair with a faded, rustic quality to it. The chair creaked as I lowered myself into it. It had been there for many years, longer than I had been. I watched as the children played in the yard. I thought to myself that I was once like them, yet simultaneously, I was not.
I sat, becoming consumed by the thoughts in my mind, when a notebook fell out of the sky. It's hard to believe such an abrupt and ridiculous claim. Even I, who experienced it, did not fully believe it. It made contact with my head, which was quite painful.
On the front of the book, the words "Death Note" were inscribed. I picked it up to examine it, eventually taking it inside. One of the children noticed. He did not ask about it. He only returned to his puzzle, peering at piece after piece through his tangled white hair.
Ever since then, I have kept the notebook in my room. My room is very drab, some might say. The lights are always dimmed and the walls are bare. That is how I think best.
It has been roughly two weeks since the book appeared. I've opened the book once or twice, skimming over the rules written inside. I know exactly what it is. Some might think it's a prank, a very elaborate one, but I can assure you, it is an authentic artifact (I mean, it fell out of the sky). I haven't used it, and I won't.. although, it sparks curiosity inside of me. It's as if I won't be satisfied until I attempt to use it.
But I wouldn't kill. I could never-
"You haven't used it yet? I thought by now you would've at least written one name."

The only thing you can change is your name
Death Note
Lawlight (not super shippy)
Rated T (canonical character death)
Alternate Universe- Kira Wins, L has no successors
1,451 words
-
Light knew it was over before L even hit the floor. The signs of a heart attack were nothing new anymore– his victim’s breathing speeds up, a wave of dizziness overtakes them, and by the time they collapse they’re nothing more than an empty corpse. It was different when he knew the person, of course, but not as different as he had expected. At the end of the day, no matter how smart, how enigmatic, how self-righteous he was, L was still human.
And that’s where we differ, L. You will always be human, but I shed that skin a long time ago, and while you’re rotting six feet under, I will be ascending to the throne of godhood. Maybe, in the churches they build in my honor, they’ll teach how you were a villain, an evil, short-sighted fool who couldn’t recognize divinity when it punched him in the face. Or maybe they won’t mention you at all.
Light put on a show of screaming over L’s corpse once his eyes closed, but internally, his mind was elsewhere. With Watari, Rem and L gone, the rest of his plan would be nothing but smooth sailing. He would continue the killings, and try to convince his family to change their views on Kira, and when the time came, he would announce himself to the world, and the world would enter a new era, one where justice prevailed, and the old world order would be nothing but a distant, unpleasant memory. When he died, they wouldn’t bury or burn him, but preserve his body to worship like the saints of old. And everyone who hated him now would agree that he had been right, and that they needed him, and that he wasn’t a monster, he had saved them.
It was honestly a shame that L would never live to see that day. Maybe he would change his mind, and realize that Kira was good, and that he was wrong for trying to oppose him. It would certainly be rewarding to see all his hard work pay off, with L surrounded by the evidence of his mistakes.
Oh well. The dirt would have to do.
Light was surprised to hear that the task force had found a will. He assumed that would be included in Watari deleting all of L’s data, but apparently after going through L’s room, a printed copy had been located, left out in case of emergency. While going through it was technically illegal, they had agreed that it would be best not to announce L’s death to the world right away, to prevent Kira from finding out that they had succeeded.
Most of the will was long, complicated, and dedicated to how his considerable sum of money would be distributed between various charities. Light was surprised to see how many of them were related to orphanages and the like– had L been an orphan? It seemed now like he would never know.
Light was also surprised to see a considerable amount of money in his name– a bit under two thousand dollars. There was a short note that went along with that, mentioning how he hoped Light would use it for college. His father looked like he was going to tear up, and Matsuda weakly congratulated him on his good fortune. But it didn’t matter– it was unlikely Light would be completing more than a year or two of college anyways.
But that wasn’t the really shocking part. The part that really surprised him was hidden away in the last few pages, detailing how L wanted to be buried. There was a specific town in Britain that was specified, along with various other instructions, but what really got Light was the fact that L didn’t want his death revealed to the world at all- during the Kira case or after. He said that he ‘would rather L quietly disappear than let the world know he had been defeated. That way, they might still have hope.’
Light scoffed at that. The people would know full well who had won once he declared himself to the world. They would enter a new era of peace and prosperity, and there would be no doubt in their minds that they needed Kira. They would understand that L had just been a distraction, trying to stop the inevitable success of good and righteousness.
But after all, what was a genius in the face of a god?
The funeral was a quiet, out-of-the way affair. Aizawa had made sure that no one else would accidentally walk over during it, so they were free to talk without worrying about being overheard. Although, it wouldn’t really have mattered either way, seeing as Kira was already among them.
After the coffin had been heaved down into the grave, stone marked with a fake name, Matsuda finally spoke up.
“I think I never really thought of him as human until now. He always seemed like some sort of untouchable computer program, but now, he’s… not.”
Light nodded. “It still seems kind of hard to believe, doesn’t it? I half expect him to show up again and act like nothing happened.” And as much as Light wanted to believe he was lying, he wasn’t, really. He had expected the victory to hit him all at once, a wave of triumph proving that it had all been worth it. But so far– nothing. It was just like before, but quieter. There was no longer purpose to what he did, he was just stalling until he inevitably had to discard his old life.
What was he waiting for?
Light decided to announce himself to the world on the first anniversary of L’s death. He opened his laptop– a new one he had bought with the money from L– and set up one of his usual Kira broadcasts. This time, he left the voice distortion off.
“I am Light Yagami, although you may know me as Kira. I believe the world is finally ready for my rule, and that I must no longer hide in the shadows. Bow before me, your god.”
Light’s phone was ringing nonstop after he ended the broadcast. His parents, Sayu, the other members of the task force– not to mention the not-insignificant number of Kira devotees who had gotten their hands on his phone number. He ended up tossing the phone, buying a burner to replace it. He knew he didn’t have long before pictures of him start”Ied spreading, so he made sure to pick up hair dye as well.
As he was waiting for his hair to dry, he felt a familiar presence behind him.
“Long time no see, Ryuk.”
Ryuk didn’t respond. “Black, huh? That’s an interesting choice. Reminds me of a certain someone.”
Light glared at the wall, not bothering to turn to face him. “Shut up. There aren’t many options for brown hair, and I don’t have time to bleach it first.”
The insufferable grin didn’t leave Ryuk’s face. “Not because you miss him? Not even a little bit?”
“What? I– Why would I do that?” Light responded, just as confused as offended. “I hated him. I killed him.”
“Hm.”
It didn’t take long for the murmurs of discontent to start spreading. Anonymous messages on forums, whispered conversations outside stores, there was one sentiment that seemed to be shared: that was Kira? Some scrawny valedictorian barely into his twenties? Maybe the nameless, faceless nature of Kira was part of his appeal– he wasn’t just another human who walked among them, he was a god. But this man– this child– was no god. He was an arrogant fool, just as mortal as the rest of them.
Sayu sat at the dinner table, between Soichiro and Sachiko, poking her dinner around her plate. The room was too quiet, the seat across from her left unused.
She picked up a piece of meat, hesitated, and set it back down, untouched.
“I still can’t believe he’d go and do something like this. He was never– he didn’t–”
Her father cut her off with a sigh. “I know. We’ll just– he’ll come to his senses. And then– I don’t know how, but we’ll fix it. We have to.”
Light stared at his computer, the name Kira mocking him from the other side of the screen. It would be so easy to change it, to replace it with a better one. One that still deserved to exist.
With a few clicks, it was done. The name was gone, erased as if it had never been there at all. Now, there was only one letter adorning the screen. A fresh start, a new name. Or rather, a stolen name.
L.
