eXTREME MOVIE What is it About? Now everyone wanted to see the movie. They whispered about it in the market and even in the mosque. “What is it about?” “Is it really that bad, that people should get arrested for having it?” The movie in question was the JESUS film—a high-quality film that portrays the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It shows the plan of salvation on the big screen, bringing the story of Jesus to life. In Jacobabad, Pakistan, two men were arrested for distributing the film and other Christian materials. Both men were beaten, and local mullahs, Muslim religious leaders, urged that charges be filed against them and others who had been involved in distributing the materials. Then they went one step beyond, encouraging Muslims in the city to take action against all Christians. Soon, a local pastor’s possessions were stolen, and shots were fired near a Christian school. The town seemed on the verge of outright violence. However, things soon began to change. Instead of boycotting the movie, everyone in town wanted to see the “sinful” film. They wanted to know about all the fuss firsthand. Black-market copies began making the rounds, and eventually the JESUS film was even shown on local television. The city judge watched the movie, and he declared that it was not anti-Islam. Through the unintentional efforts of the mullahs, the gospel message reached an entire community. They planned to erase the JESUS film from their country. However, their campaign actually promoted the ministry. God does not turn evil into good by conventional methods. He blesses the efforts of His servants, but not in ways we might anticipate. Christians in restricted nations are learning this the hard way, but they rejoice to see the mystery of God at work in their nations. God makes a way for us even when it doesn’t make sense. There are times when everything seems to be going wrong. Are those the times when you trust God the most? He knows what He is doing even when you do not. Our Lord conditions true happiness not on knowledge alone but on knowledge of His Word plus obedience. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

We all use mirrors - some spend hours in front of one everyday. I live in a house with three women, so I try to squeeze a look into one when I can.  In front of a mirror is where the majority of our mornings are spent fixing our hair, doing make up, shaving, etc. It allows us to look at ourselves and evaluate what needs to be fixed before we go out into the public eye. A lot of times we look into the mirror and are not satisfied and set out to fix what we are unhappy with.  Being the start of a new year, many will look in the mirror and set out on a new diet to lose unwanted pounds that make them feel uncomfortable when they gaze into the mirror.

James likens the Word of God as to a mirror.  When we read God’s Word, it is like looking into a spiritual mirror.  We see many things that we need to fix about ourselves.  The Word allows us to see that we are lacking in many areas, such as the fruits of the spirit - love, joy, peace, PATIENCE, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, SELF-CONTROL. It allows us to see that we need to fix some areas of our lives that are not completely in submission to the Lord. Spending time in the Word is like looking into a mirror and being able to see the things that we are unsatisfied with and helping us to make the corrections we need.

Some people, like my unnamed 15 year old daughter, look in the mirror, raise their eyebrows, and declare, “You look Good!” Many of you do something similar - don’t deny it. Right now there are probably thousands of little boys standing in front of a mirror flexing muscles, popping their pecs, and feeling larger and stronger than they really are.  Many people get a significant boost of self esteem when they look in a mirror.  These people are very fun to be around, in my opinion.

Similarly, the Word of God can show us a reflection that is not seen any other way.  When we read what God thinks about us and what He has done for us, it boosts our spiritual mentality and helps us to see what our King sees. The Word of God tells us that we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us, that we are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that the Greater One lives on the inside of us, and that He has good plans for us. These things allow you to look at yourself, raise your eyebrows, and declare, “You look Good!”

James 1:22-25 AMP But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth]. For if anyone only listens to the word without obeying it, he is like a man who looks very carefully at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he immediately forgets what he looked like. But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God in what he does [in his life of obedience].

You would think me crazy if I looked at myself in the mirror, turned and walked away, immediately stopped and said, “I wonder what I look like.” Yet James says this is what we are like if we read God’s Word but do not obey it.  If we truly want to be imitators of God, we will spend time gazing into God’s Word, make necessary corrections, and see ourselves the way God sees us.
