In my post-canon headcanon, Dogo gets a redemption arc, realizing that his parents were a negative influence on him, and Mtoto eventually joins the Lion Guard as the strongest member, succeeding Beshte, (A.K.A. the endings both characters should've gotten in the series).

They eventually go through a rivals to lovers arc in their teen years, and well into adulthood, they get married (in short Reirei has an elephant for a son in law and it's fucking hilarious).

Why does losing a pet hurt so much?

You ever tried to cuddle a human for a long period of time? You get hot right? It gets uncomfortable and your arms or hands fall asleep and you just gotta shift and move. Now think of cuddling with your pet. It’s NEVER like that. I can take about five minutes of snuggling with my husband before I’ve gotta stretch out and get to my side of the bed, but my 60 something pound fuzzy pupper plops herself on me and we are good for the night.

They find that sweet spot every time where you both just merge and those naps are glorious. It’s because pets are apart of you. They are that sweet innocent soul that gives you hope for this world.
