Why I Want Loki to Live

Okay, I know that I have made it very clear that Loki is my ultimate favourite character in the MCU, and obviously, at a surface level, I would very much like to see my favourite character back and alive and happy again.

But beyond that, I think it is necessary to explain why I feel that Loki’s death is perhaps the most painful and tragic of all the deaths in Infinity War.

Don’t take me wrong, if I had it my way, I would certainly want every single person who died in Infinity War, whether it be by the snap or otherwise, to return because I love them all very much.

But Loki, I want Loki to return because honestly, that boy deserves some happiness in his life.

Ever since he was a baby, he was brought into Asgard, has had his identity kept away from him for so many damned years by Odin who was not doing it for Loki’s protection in any way, faced an entire existence of being not good enough and a failure and never had any actual love from anyone around him, except for Frigga, Thor, and only in the few moments of Thor: Raganarok, Odin himself.

It was this self-hatred and self-loathing, and harbouring the centuries of pain that caused him to let go when he was at the Bifrost in the first Thor film, and then this was what caused Thanos to encounter him in this extremely volatile and vulnerable state.

This is not a face of someone who is thinking of faking his death; this is the face of a man who just cannot hold onto anything anymore, and has given up and just wishes to end his pain.

And in this state, he encounters Thanos who manipulates and tortures him into submission, gives him the Mind Stone, making it seem like he can finally  get something he wishes to get, and makes use of the hatred within him to turn him against his brother and become that maniacal murderer we see in Avengers. I mean, come on, isn’t it obvious that the Loki from Thor is surely nothing like the Loki in Avengers?

And then, of course, naturally, Loki’s first encounter with the Avengers team is as a villain. They all hate him, and really, I don’t at all blame them for that. 

And then, in Thor: Dark World, we get Loki, who attempts to make it up to his brother, loses his mother by his own action of setting the Frost Giants upon Asgard, even ends up putting himself at risk of death to save Dr Foster, and yes, he puts Odin from the throne and sits on it as Odin, but remember, this Loki is the one who is still psychologically tormented by Thanos and is torn apart, trying to find his own standing. Remember also, Thor threatens to kill Loki here if he doesn’t cooperate with him, and in a deleted scene, he even tells Frigga to give up on Loki.

Here, Thor begins to give up on Loki because he’s beginning to feel that he has completely gone off the rails and is pure evil.

And then, we get Ragnarok. Here, we get Loki and Thor in this crazily oscillating relationship, we have Loki who is just so damn traumatised by Thanos that he engages in a suspiciously sexual relationship with the Grandmaster in Sakaar (it has been hinted, but really, it is not that difficult to discern from a few scenes, and looks at hos uncomfortable Loki looks), all in the attempt to hide from Thanos, meets his brother, and then gets left behind for dead by the very same brother. Yes, Loki was being an ass for trying to betray Thor again, I concede, and I don’t blame Thor for this being the final straw. 

But... in the very same film, we get Loki finally coming back. We see Loki’s motivations: he wants to be a hero, he wants to be loved and admired and he wants to have fun. That was literally what he was doing as Odin in the first parts of the film, and in a heartwrenching touch of irony, that is what he does when he finally returns to Thor.

And then.... we get some wonderful minutes of the two brothers, finally coming to terms with each other and working out together....

And then... just as we expect a hug, we get the end credits scene.

Look at how utterly terrified Loki looks here. 

Because he knows how Thanos is like... and he knows what would happen.

And... we know what happens next.

I know Loki hasn’t been a perfect person, honestly speaking, no one truly is. But the one thing that keeps Loki apart from everyone else that died is that he... never had a proper family and friends that he could always rely on. There were many moments he was completely alone... and everyone left him alone, and somehow, he had successfully faced all that, and become what he always wanted to be: a hero.

Therefore, he needs to continue living as the hero he had always wanted to be.

And think of it this way... Thor’s last words to Loki were something along the lines of “you are the worst brother”... Imagine the pain he feels, and still feels... Imagine the pain he will feel if everyone else returns but Loki.

Give Loki his life he deserves. 

Give Thor the brother he loves.

Give us our Loki.
