Holy what--
Marathon!
I think it's a sign of a healthy fan community when all a game shows up on Steam and all the reviews are memes.

Recently, I've taken up a task of trying to find the quintessential games of the 1990s. I'm looking for games that described the culture of the 90s or had massive influence on gaming or pop culture. While Duke Nukem's jump from platformer to shooter is definitely influenced by Doom and its clones, it's attitude was all 1990s counter-culture.
So for my first time, I play Duke Nukem 3D...

Doom was 1993, that's another data point, although Doomclone isn't a common term anymore. Also Castlevania wasnt a Metroidvania; the series became Metroidvania with Symphony of the Night in 1997. So that's 1980, average 1992ish, 1993, and 2011
I don't know what this means
Rogue (the computer game) was released in 1980
the first Metroid game was released in 1986 and the first Castlevania game was released in 1989
Dark Souls 1 was released in 2011
assuming this trend continues, we should expect to see the next video game with an entire genre named after it releasing some time between 2030 and 2035

Religion in Vidya draft 0.5 (do not send)
Religion has been at the forefront of culture since humanity’s first tribes and towns. It has also been a prominent topic in each media since its inception. Video games are no different in this respect. There is an argument, however, that video games often present religion in a neutral or explicitly negative respect, unlike their predecessors. I think it would be pretty cool to actually look into what’s going on here cause I think this is pretty interesting.
So let’s look at this one side first, right? You’ve got the guys on the side of the God who are like “Look at this cool new tool we can use to preach the good word!” Then they go and make these super preachy games like that one Christian DOOMClone (which honestly didn’t really need to be made cause DOOM is as Christian as it gets lol) and they do their best to use these games to be like “Christianity is cool, kids! We have murder and mayhem too, we just call it God’s Will!”
Sometimes they are pretty good at designing games too, look at GodStoria, a competent RTS that actually worked pretty well to my understanding. Though buried in that design is sometimes an unintentional criticism of Christianity which is also pretty interesting. Like in GodStoria, Faith was a resource that constantly had to be maintained and restored because of all of the stone effigies popping up and shit and people weren’t really happy about that, they complained about it on the forums and were like “Dude why do we have to work so hard to keep faith up? We don’t even get much of a bonus out of it ;-;” (Bainbridge 7).
But it’s not all sunshine and roses for the Christians over there, there’s another side to this argument too! The scientists are looking at some of these games and are like “wow a lot of games have anti-religious undertones or are sometimes explicitly anti-religious! That’s pretty cool honestly” and so they really like to focus in on that aspect of things. Some of them also like looking at the overall sentiment of the NPCs of various religions and comparing them with the views of the PCs who actually play the game.
Ooh Ooh that reminds me cults are wack in games Like they’re always just pure evil with no downside, faceless nothings that are made for the player to crush either rbecause they stand against your own religion or because they’re sacrificing virgins or some shit. Like this is fascinating cause cults are actually so much more interesting than that usually.
I wanna look at the cultural impacts of these religious depictions and how they affect the players who see them cause that’s pretty cool I think. Also because all of the writing on this Is pretty explicitly biased one way or another and while I def can’t guarantee mine wont be, it’s worth another pair of eyes looking at these games for a while
Also it would be pretty cool to play vieo game for research purposes honestly cause like I’m looking over there and I see other researchers doig things that actually have an impact and I’m over here like “mmmm how are these guys doing religion in their game cause that’s pretty cool”

That time I was trying to solve a puzzle and forgot what maps are. I begged the chat to forget what I said, then undermined myself by sharing it on Instagram. It appears that "AAA" game devs are still convinced that "only boys play shooter games" and "boys will only play a game with a female protagonist if the perspective is third-person so you can see her butt." On the other hand, there are a bunch of indie FPS games where you play as a woman.
#fps#doomclone#female protagonist#indie games#i haven't played all of these so no guarantees on quality

In Caesar’s Revenge there aren’t any health pickups - instead the player must recover by chaining kills and entering bloodlust. There is also the moral decision of whether or not the player chooses attack civilians to regain health. Caesar himself fought for the common people and even after death he had many supporters. What is the price of vengeance?

I refuse to call retro revival shooters "boomer shooters" because that's a stupid term but I also can't call them "retro revival shooters" in common conversation because it's clunky as shit so I don't really know where to go from here

One world is a staple of the Dark Forces franchise: Nar Shaddaa - The Smuggler’s Moon. It lives up to its name as a haven for criminals and bounty hunters while also hosting a small Imperial presence. There’s a bounty on Kyle’s head so he’s landing in the most dangerous world in the galaxy.

Introducing The Persona-Like
We hear terms such as Sous-like and Doomclone throughout the gaming industry, I’m here to introduce the idea of the Persona-Like. Games which are similar to the Persona game series. This is mainly for me to work on, but could also help fans of Persona find new games to play.
While Tokyo Mirage Sessions COUNTS as one, it will not be included due to the fact that it was made by Atlus, who also made the Persona series. All of the ones on this list are on Steam, and most are on PS4.
What Makes up a Persona-Like?
The Persona series is based around making a commentary on Japanese Society from the point of view of highschool students.
These typically balance Life Simulator or Dating Sim elements with RPG mechanics, and usually involve other worlds, religious symbolism, and The Power of Friendship.
What I Consider Persona-Likes
The games I am thinking could be considered Persona-like are the following:
Tokyo Xanadu: A spinoff of Nihon Falcom’s Xanadu series. Tokyo Xanadu is an Action RPG set in modern day Japan. It follows a group of students as they join an organization to fight off the incursion of another world in a small city just outside of Tokyo proper. While combat is not turn-based like Persona, it still uses the idea of “cognitive weaponry” in order to fight. Also takes infuence from Nihon Falcom’s Trails series.
The Caligula Effect: Written by Tadashi Satomi, who wrote the first three Persona Games. Follows a group of individuals as they try to escape a “Perfect World” created by a Vocaloid-inspired program named Mu. Turn-based combat with a unique style to it. The life simulator aspects come in when trying to form the party, as you ca add various NPCs you meet to the party, and you have to maintain a relationship with them to gain their powers.
Death end re;Quest: I actually know the least about this game. All I know is that it shares a lot of traits, including another cognitive illusory world deal, turn-based combat, and life simulator elements. /shrug
Blue Reflection: A game where you play a ballet dancer who was involved in an accident. The life simulation aspects are a heavy focus in this game, as your relationship with characters helps them level up for combat in the other realm.
Persona-Adjacent Games
These games, while not similar enough to Persona to be considered Persona-clones share some similarities, such as the societal commentary,
World of Horror: The most obvious of the Persona Adjacents. I considered putting this in Persona-Likes, however, its dark tone and style of gameplay separate it from the other games in the category. Based off of Junji Ito’s works and the works of HP Lovecraft, it is about fighting Eldritch horrors in a quiet Japanese town. Has some minor Social elements, but is more about survival. Also all the art was made in MS Paint.
Danganronpa: I know, I know, it’s not exactly Persona due to the combat and mystery aspects. However, I put it in this category due to the amount of crossover I see between the fandoms, as well as the fact that it’s Japanese social commentary in a highschool, with unique characters.
