Much overdue, but since @emeraldcitycomiccon is kicking off today seemed like a great time to post something green! If you’re at the con, you can find me at booth 10637. High school me is obsessed with these pants. When I feel like I haven’t been doing so well with the cosplay or this IG, I think of where I started. That little weirdo in HS would be so proud. She would probably cry knowing that hot topic thinks I’m cool enough to send stuff to. #sponsoredbyHT #HTFxInvaderZim #invaderzim #punkfashion #gothfashion #eccc #hottopic #doomsong #millennials (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpTDEEsPzQd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Challenge #03845-J193: Turn of Fate
They put a knockout in the tea they served to everyone, and left a note of apology by the sleeping forms. A tear slid down a tired face, weapons strapped on, this would be the last battle. Live or die, the danger would finally be over. But this time, their friends would be spared, they would face it alone. -- Anon Guest
Promise Hardbattle had made the tea ceremony a ritual before facing any enemy. He and his friends sharing one last brew before their next uncertain fate.
"I hate prophecies," he said, nursing his cup as the others sipped at the aromatic liquid. "According to the word of some blind, mad old bat, I don't live to see my fiftieth birthday. And that's tomorrow."
"Prophecies are horseshit," said Doomsong as they stretched their bad leg. "Remember that tea-reader in Nifesbridge? Said I'd die next to my best friend."

Part of him couldn't help but ponder if such a side was repressed. For the many who find themselves dimmed by the world, lost to the grim horrors, Joshua's sense of vigor managed to gnaw and tear with a genuine desire that burns bright as flame. It allowed his light to stir a sense of harmony within, a warmth that bolstered his own mood as that cheeky smile found itself present once more.
A firm pat of a fist is settled upon his own chest, spiky hair briefly jostled as those eyes were ignited with a searing burst of spiritual light. "As if you'd find me saying no? If there's one thing I learned, if challenge exists, then that means there's something out there that wants to be discovered."
"So--"
His voice is briefly clipped by the momentary interruption, briefly caught by the mention of this accord. (Sounds cool when a deal is said like that!) Yet, what he expected hadn't passed, rather, this was an entirely unexpected venue that nearly makes the keybearer's jaw drop. The world's greenery, denied?! The fact a playful lit follows on the idea nearly made Sora double over, his snickers audible as it resists growing louder.
"Huh! So in your terms for this, you'd like a feast filled with the finest cuts? Seasoned to the bone and made to kick ya up to full sail with each bite?"
What? As if he'd say no? Meat was a prime staple from the world he hailed from!
Tumblr media
"Consider it done! Not much to a 'celebration' if there's any dread on the onset. Sides. I've been missing a good combo of searing steak coupled with some searing potatoes."
That said, this leads to what could make such a feast be gratifying? Studying their options at the board had instantly canted his sights only at the highest, the S, challenges that were truly befitting of testing their mettle. This was no boat of overconfidence that compelled him to draw a fingertip of these papers. It was simply reality, a testament to the trials they've already faced.
"Mmm.. If I had to pick oneeeee... Oh. What'cha think of this one here Joshua?" Ripping it from the bulletin board, Sora would return to their side, allowing them to survey the contents together.
Atlas X.
What awaited them in the details was nothing short of doomsong. How it was a terror once ignited, how the ancients created these machinations as a sign that life itself had failed them. Many theories and sophistry found itself aligned with the details and picture, a dark behemoth encrusted with old metals that look futuristic in nature, alongside the blades that served as the epithets of many.
"From how it sounds, anyone unlucky usually just.. make that bad fortune follow them. By no damn means should this continue on without some kind of curtain call."

Hearing mysterious singing is already a cause for concern in fantasy settings. Generally though the danger comes from being drawn to the threat, such as by harpies or sirens. The doomsinger doesn't lure you in to kill you with the environment or weapons. Their song simply rips your body to pieces if they so wish it. Like many dreams, the doomsinger's goals and motives are locked in and hard to parse out from the outside. What prompts them to use their doomsong as opposed to regular singing isn't always clear. They always seek out a crowd, looking to host performances for as many people as possible, but most often these songs are harmless. On occasion however, with seemingly no distinction, sometimes their performance is fatal, killing much of the crowd in a bloody display, and leaving the survivors scarred and traumatized. The doomsinger's body is "clothed" in a shifting outfit of strange shapes and faces, some of which bear an uncanny resemblance to the people killed by the doomsinger.
In a non-dream setting, the doomsinger makes sense as a fey creature. Depending on how well your hospitality and manners hold up, you either get a beautiful performance that you'll remember for the rest of your life, or a horribly painful performance that you'll remember for the rest of your (much shorter) life.

The AC of the doomsinger includes its Charisma bonus. Reflect Thunder. Whenever the doomsinger is subjected to thunder damage, it takes no damage and instead each creature within 30 feet of the doomsinger takes thunder damage equal to the amount that would have been dealt to the doomsinger. Vulnerable To Silence. The doomsinger takes 20 psychic damage when it starts its turn in the area of a silence spell. While in the area, it also has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. Actions Multiattack. The doomsinger makes two Sonic Staff attacks. Sonic Staff. Melee Spell Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8+6) bludgeoning damage plus 14 (4d6) thunder damage. Doomsong. The doomsinger sings a magical melody. Each creature of the doomsinger's choice that starts its turn within 60 feet of the doomsinger while it is singing must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. A creature that can't hear the doomsinger has advantage on this save. On a failure, the creature takes 13 (3d8) thunder damage. If the saving throw fails by 5 or more, the target is also overwhelmed by the sound and can't take any actions on its turn. If the saving throw is successful, the target takes half as much thunder damage. The doomsinger must use a bonus action on each of its turns to continue singing. The song lasts until the doomsinger chooses not to continue singing it, or until its concentration ends (as if concentrating on a spell). Focused Note (Recharge 5-6). The doomsinger targets a point it can see within 120 feet of it. Each creature within 5 feet of that point must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (7d12) thunder damage and becoming stunned for one round on a failed save, or half as much damage and not being stunned on a successful one. A creature that can't hear the doomsinger has advantage on the saving throw.

#13yrsago Coupland's JPod: the Anti-Microserfs
Tumblr media
I just finished "JPod," Douglas Coupland's latest novel. Coupland has long been a favorite writer of mine, someone who was able to tell stories about people who could use irony to distance themselves from the worst parts of their lives, but transcend irony to come to the best parts of their lives. JPod is something different.
JPod is a novel about how the novelty-seeking, irony-soaked, instant-nostalgia, gross-out culture of the Internet can corrode your soul, so that when you crack wise, there's nothing underneath it but more wisecracks. The book made me uncomfortable and sometimes even angry, but I never wanted to put it down, and it made me think hard about my own life and values.
Coupland's earlier books, like 1995's Microserfs, tell the stories of smart, committed young people working their guts out because they believe in the transformative power of technology, because their pure passion for technology unites them. These young people are exploited and have personal problems, but they overcome them by supporting one another -- finding ways outside of "enterprise IT" to use technology to make their lives better. They become entrepreneurs, activists, or artists, finding ways to create change where none had existed before.
But JPod has none of that. In JPod, the little brothers and sisters of Generation X slave away at a thinly-disguised EA Games in Vancouver, where marketdroids reward their slavish labor by heaping menial tasks on them, and perverting the games they make so that they're not even cool. None of these people will be a software millionaire. They are people who work sweatshop hours for lousy wages, burn out young, and go nowhere. They use Google and eBay to scour the globe for anything to make their lives meaningful. They don't find it.
The storyline is all over the place. Much of it is cartoony -- sub-plots about Chinese gangsters, militant lesbians and dope-growers and so on -- and clearly not meant to be taken seriously. But there's a core story that trundles along as Coupland sings his doomsong, a story about characters as likable as Coupland characters always are, people struggling in ways that makes you want them to succeed.
JPod is the anti-Microserfs. Coupland has written himself as a character into the book, someone reviled by his other characters, presumably for having duped them into thinking that irony and a career in tech will make them happy and fulfilled. He's a villain, and he's pretty unflinching in criticizing his own work.
The prose is peppered with long pastebombs of Internet prose, from the banal to the sublime. eBay UI chrome. Penis enlargement spams. Acronym expansions, humorous and serious. All the valid three-letter Scrabble words. Where this kind of pastebomb appeared in earlier Coupland works, it was ironic, or cool, or funny. In JPod, it's a cross between reverent prose-poetry and a lament at how our brave revolution has become another bureaucracy.
Coupland's message is more than a counsel of despair there. First and foremost, he is indeed saying that working at EA in 2006 is no less miserable and soul-crushing than working for IBM in 1975 was, sure. But he's also reveling in how fast the revolution happened, how many peoples' lives it's touched, how fast it's become the new normal.
Which is right: there's no such thing as a permanent state of turmoil. Eventually, turmoil becomes normal.
But next year's turmoil is always lurking around the corner -- and every generation will get a chance to experience some kind of wrack and roll.
