Death Rock (1990) is the third volume of the Doomstones campaign and a clear improvement over the previous installments. The first section is more mountain traversal, but it is brief. The chapter really gets going once the players arrive at the monastery, where a ghost gives the group a series of hints via playing cards that lead to the location of the Crystal of Air (sort of), all the while a band of orcs lays siege to the place.

The adventure benefits from a memorable antagonist, a chosen of Tzeentch who has mutated from an orc into a strange bird person. He wants the crystal too, so it his arrival is no accident. Running the siege concurrently with the investigation seems like a thrilling prospect, particularly since retrieving the crystal from its hiding place will give players the means for a decisive victory. In grim fashion, though, plausible outcomes are given for the defeat of the monastery’s defenders, too.

The puzzle is pretty perfect. The cards are found all over the monastery, encouraging exploration. Once they’re all collected, solving the puzzle seems just tricky enough to feel challenging without turning into a slog. And the best part: the solution of the puzzle doesn’t solve the problem — that can only be accomplished with further investigation and conversations with NPCs. That’s a good puzzle!

Tony Ackland did all the interiors himself. I guess that means he did the cover too?

Oh, also, Gotrek and Felix are provided as additional visitors to the monastery, in case the GM thinks the fighting of the siege would overwhelm the players. Its a neat little potential cameo.

just noticed something cool

so in Shadow 05, the chaos abilities he has are Chaos Control, and Chaos Blast, which make shadow glow red or blue with Chaos energy

Chaos Control in levels pushes shadow forward in time, making him blip through chunks of the level really fast

ergo: Blue Chaos Energy = Speed Energy

Chaos Blast destroys everything in a certain radius

ergo: Red Chaos Energy = Power Energy

Speed and Power (red and blue) are also in Sonic Heroes, so now I want to do 2 things: 1, what would shadows Chaos Action be if he had Yellow Chaos Energy (flight) in Shadow 05,

and 2, write this into my Ivory AU as the abilities of the DoomStones, aka; the Super Emeralds, as the Super Emeralds do not use the elemental powers of the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald (basically giving me the opportunity to make even more for 7 Super Emerald colors)

also when Gerald Robotnik made Chaos Drives, he was actually replicating the power of the Super Emeralds, which were sealed inside the Chaos Emeralds. so when shadow gets his own spin off game in the Ivory universe, the Chaos Drives will act like the wisps, giving shadow a small and unique temporary power

I have so many ideas for this au, and I'm not gatekeeping (most) secrets anymore, expect lore dumps and stuff until I get the time, motivation, and computer I need to actually make this project

yeah my fantasy life ocs have lore now. also there's like six more of them. yapping below

this is very much a work in progress! but it revolves around mal getting close to the staff of a local cafe that recently opened in the artisan district 🙏 both of the mal comics are still canon to this btw, but they take place before the events of the golden brewery (which is a few months after the doomstone crisis)

essentially mal is helping the staff of the brewery (tabby, sassy, augustine, elmer and marcot) work out their problems, and most of the story is really centered on how mal helps people....... but rarely gives others the chance to help her

The second volume of the Doomstones campaign is Blood in the Darkness (1990). If you liked the first one, you’ll like this one. If not, well, this is basically the same stuff. Traverse some difficult countryside, fight some monsters. There are live orcs in this one, at the shrine that serves as the destination and the repository of the Crystal of Earth. For what it is, it’s pretty OK, it just isn’t what I want.

The lower levels of the shrine are a bit more Tomb of Horrors than I was expecting. There are hints and handouts that kind of clue in players to what kind of traps they might encounter. Those traps, well, the one main trap, is a doozy. I don’t know how I feel about it! On the one hand, it makes sense: it is there to kill intruders and prevent them from getting further into the vault. Most traps in RPGs are not designed so efficiently, and I appreciate that. I also like the way the handouts help the players out, which addresses my concern about the unfairness of Tomb of Horrors. But I dunno, I think this trap is just gonna kill parties no matter what, you know? And that…is not my ideal outcome. Maybe I’m wrong, it could be easier to figure out in play.

Tony Ackland does the bulk of the interior art, and it is good. I am not sure who does the cover because, again, it is not credited.

hi guys, it's myu here!

if you've been around the fantasy life tag, you may or may not have stumbled upon one of my ocs, mal! she was originally just meant to be my player character in fl for this joke but i later gave her more of a character and backstory (fun!)

since a lot about her is probably in the dark, i'll yap a bit about her backstory here

let's start at the beginning - mal's family.

mal was the only daughter of two adventurers, and being the only child she was often doted on by them. she was certainly way different back then - a wide-eyed, curious child who loved to hear her parents' stories. then, one day, her parents left her with pam and set off on an adventure, and they never returned.

a few months after her parents left, mal met a kid her age named weiss, hailing from port puerto. their family was temporarily staying in castele, and they became close to lonely little mal. the two of them would wander around town, talking about their hopes and dreams for their future.

mal aspired to become a wizard - a powerful wizard known far and wide, hoping that her parents would want to come back home to her. weiss wanted to be a tailor, but their pirate family wanted them to continue their legacy. in the end, mal convinced them to follow their dreams, and in turn weiss promised her to create something beautiful for her.

weiss left once again, and mal found herself all alone again, for many years. she started to believe that loss and loneliness were inevitable things, and that there was no point in becoming close to someone when they would one day leave as well.

...which leads us to the first day of the rest of my life comic! taking place on the day mal first becomes a wizard, the comic shows mal's thoughts leading up to it - how she was afraid of what could happen, her wishing her parents were there to celebrate this occasion, and overall showing how lonely she was. "every man for himself" was her motto at this point, having accepted that she only has herself to rely on. and yet, as she looks in the mirror, she is not the only one looking back - because, as it turns out, she isn't alone :)

in the eternal happiness comic, mal's wish to yuelia was explained. she had told butterfly she wished for "eternal happiness," but in reality she had no idea at the time what that meant for her. then, after the doomstone crisis was resolved and the dust settled, mal realized what this "eternal happiness" was all along.

"You were what I was wishing for all along."

it was yuelia - and weiss, laura, hazel, and everyone else she had come to consider a friend. eternal happiness was a stable companionship she never had, someone she could grow close to and rely on without worrying about them leaving.

her wish was granted from the day she met butterfly - from the day she realized that perhaps she no longer has to be afraid anymore. she reunited with weiss in port puerto, who fulfilled the promise they made with her. in fact, mal's current outfit (quilted sweater and philosopher's hat) was from weiss!

so, what's next for mal and weiss? well, the short answer is the golden brewery. that story is still a work in progress and ill probably work more on fleshing out mal and weiss some more, so stay tuned i guess haha
