Las Vegas Park Race Track, 1953

The track went bust after just 13 days of live racing in 1953, a failure of what was intended to marry the Las Vegas gambling and entertainment destination with the Thoroughbred racing boom. The site later became Las Vegas Country Club, Westgate, Regency Towers, and part of Las Vegas Convention Center.

Joe Smoot founded Las Vegas Park in ‘49, and acquired 750 acres from the estate of Leigh S. J. Hunt at $750/acre. The architects were Arthur Froehlich and Paul R. Williams. Construction began in summer of ‘50, and by the following year the business was bankrupt.

Smoot pleaded not guilty to a grand jury embezzlement indictment. In federal court, failing to produce receipts or canceled checks for $500,000 in missing money, he said: “You ever try to pay a politician with a check?”

Las Vegas Jockey Club, a new corporation headed by Lou Smith and Al Luke, emerged as the new owner and operator in early 1953. The park opened September 4, 1953. Their only season was married by faulty ticking and betting equipment. The stables were vacated in Oct. ‘53. Joe W. Brown bought the track following its second bankruptcy.

Las Vegas Turf Club was the second organization to use the track for horse racing. Their Dec. ‘54 season had poor attendance, as low as 400. Ten years later in ‘64 & 65, Las Vegas Park was used for the last time for Nevada Racing Association’s Thunderbird Downs. (The name Thunderbird Downs was also used for the half-mile track a short distance away at the Thunderbird Hotel.)

Throughout the 50s, the track – alternately known as Joe W. Brown Race Track – was also used for convention events and automobile racing: American Automobile Association Championship (‘54), NASCAR Grand National Championship (‘55), and the USAC Grand Prix (‘59). It was the race track seen in the movie “Viva Las Vegas.”

Part of the property was sold to Clark County in ‘57 for the construction of the Convention Center. Joe W. Brown’s estate sold the remaining property to National Equities Inc. in ‘65 for the creation of what became Las Vegas Country Club. National Equities sold some 60 acres to Kirk Kerkorian for The International Hotel; 20 acres to Clark County for an expansion of the Convention Center; the southeast section was saved for what would be come Regency Towers.

About that Tumblr Bullying

I know I said I was going to do a whole call out post about the bullying that happened to me. Complete with receipts. But a funny thing happened after I posted my little preview post yesterday. My DM’s blew the fuck up with people reaching out to me with, support yes but also, and unfortunately, their own stories of having been bullied. Like a lot of people.

That got me thinking, what happened to me is a drop in the bucket. This problem is much more prevalent than I ever would have thought and that is so disappointing and unfortunate. This is supposed to be fun. Grown adults are not supposed to act this way.

A hate post was made about me, and I was, in fact, clueless to its existence until my little anon friend gave me the heads up. A move that seemed desperate for my attention. I have decided not to give it to them. I have decided that they don’t get any more of my time, attention or energy.

I want to focus, instead, on those being bullied. Because this issue is way larger than just me. I can handle it. I have been through some shit in my life and come through it with flying colors. A little Tumblr hate isn’t about to break me. But I know not everyone has the same level of resilience, not everyone is in a good place, not everyone has a good support system filled with loving, supportive people. I know there are people out there struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, stress, and worse. I know there are people for whom toxic internet bullying could cause a major mental health crisis, or set off a depressive episode or hell, even just seriously mess with their self esteem. My inbox is full of stories of writers doubting themselves, their writing, their worth as a human being because of the atrocious things said to them (way worse than what was said about me).

I  want to do a couple of things here. The first is simply to let each and every one of you know that you are worthy. I know my platform isn’t that large, I’m no one special, but to those this does reach, I want to tell you that you do matter! You are worthwhile!

Secondly, I’d like to remind you that you own no one anything, not your time, not your attention, not a response to their messages, not an acknowledgement of their complaints (real or imagined). Literally, nothing.

My advice?

Surround yourself with positive people. Block the negative ones. You lose nothing by cutting toxic people out. Out of your Tumblr feed, out of your Facebook feed or even out of your real life. Sometimes, blocking and moving on with your life is self-care. There are people who thrive on drama and negativity. They can’t live without it, they feed on it. Don’t feed them. Cut off their access to you. Save your energy for those that make you smile, those that see the beauty in you (even when you don’t see it yourself).

When you have the energy/spoons for it, pay it forward every chance you get. Give compliments, prop up other people. You never know when that compliment might be the thing that turns an otherwise dull day into a bright one. And bonus, you’ll feel good about it too! I believe that what we put out in the universe comes back to us. So, send positivity out there every chance you get.

Engage in aggressive self-care. Block out time for yourself. Do the things that you enjoy, eat the foods that you love, allow yourself time to watch that TV show that makes you happy, even if the laundry isn’t done. Take a hot bath, go for a long walk (if you’re able), draw, write, paint, do whatever it is that feeds your soul. And don’t apologize for it, or feel guilty for doing it. Your happiness counts. You count!

If you are struggling, please reach out to someone, talk, tell someone. Don’t keep it all inside, let it out. I know that can be hard sometimes, but it’s crucial for healing. And let’s face it, most of us have unresolved trauma of some sort or another.

The last thing I want to do here is give a little practical advice. I want to offer some tips for how to lock down your account to better protect yourself against being blindsided by anon hate. Here they are:

This is the most obvious one. Turn off anonymous asks. To do this, go to “Account” (little gear icon in upper right hand corner on mobile) and scroll down to “Allow anonymous asks” and toggle it off. <- I did this, because I had witnessed others getting anon hate. I thought it was enough. It wasn’t. Someone determined to stalk, bully and harass you will find another way. So keep reading.

Take away the ability for an anonymous, fake, blog to message you. Yes, you can make it so that only blogs you follow can DM you. To do this, go to “Account” and click on “Account settings” then click on “Messaging”, here you can choose who can message you, pick “only Tumblrs you follow can message”. <- Wish I had known that sooner. Never occurred to me that someone would make an entire fake blog just to send me hate.

Next, if you want, you can limit who may comment on your posts. Go to “Account” then to “Account settings” and click on “Replies” choose “only Tumblrs you follow can reply” <- This is tricky for me, because the whole point of Tumblr is interacting with new people/content. But if you are being stalked, harassed and/or bullied, I would recommend taking this extra step.

This is just a privacy issue, but if you don’t want others to know when you’re active, go to “Account” then “Account Settings” and click on “Privacy”. You can toggle to turn off “Let others see that you’re active”<- Not really going to keep anyone from bullying you, but if you have anxiety about people being mad if you don’t respond when they can see that you are active, then it’s a good thing to deactivate.

If you’ve taken the above steps, then you are safe from anon hate in your asks, your inbox and the comment sections of your posts. <- someone can still create a fake blog and make a nasty comment in a reblog of your post, but at least they have to show their nastiness publicly.

NV HS Scorpions kick off the varsity football season against last year's district champions, Red Mesa.

Nazr is not coaching this year, he's taking a sabbatical due to previous personal issues. Taking over in his place is Latrice Beaumont. She used to be a player herself and is the first Gemini ever hired as coach. She calls a conference to talk about her new strategy and changes to the game.

Players mentioned include; Junius Duncan who is 5'4'', 120lbs, has 8 legs, no arms, a thorax and can jump up to 20 times his height and Prince Reynolds who has hydraulic joints installed in his shoulders. There is also Timothy Llano, their offensive guard.

One of the changes is a crack down on endzone celebrations. District head of officiating Jake Kemp states that in his day everyone was more conservative and not selfishly making the game about them. He then blames Millenials for ruining everything. When it's pointed out that current high schoolers are not millenials and that he, at 33, is one, Kemp makes himself age to 93.

There is also a rule saying players must have two or fewer legs which means Junius can't play.

Red Mesa players mentioned are; Salam Talib and Trung Pham (who has 20 inch antlers).

Everyone in Pine Cliff is a ghost, which makes their defence really weak. Cecil makes a bad pun about them coming 'dead last' which his producer, Ian, dislikes because his mother was part of the Great Cataclysm of 2008 that resulted in the residents all becoming ghosts. Their running back is called Alfonso Menendez.

Cactus Park senior running back Patrick Lyle is being encouraged to hold the ball and not put it in his pocket.

DBToo now has a new team and wants to start playing again, although there are worries about crossing between the DOW and this one for other players, theoretical physicist Cedric Dumond from DB Junior College tells them they need to stop looking at the bad and think about the good instead. Their kicker is called Leonard Clayton.

The Whispering Forest is now an independent and ever growing township with it's own football team this year. Despite all of them being trees. They won't be able to do much but recruit the other team to their side by turning them into trees. Their team is the Wood Dogs.

Coach Beaumont's new strategy is 'surprise'. The team will play all 5 rival teams at once, in 5 minutes from her saying that. At first their chances of winning the game seem slim, then Beaumont gets Junius to stand on his back two legs and pretend the rest of his legs are arms, thus technically allowing him to play and win the game for them.

Season previews: Carlton (8th)

Last season: 5th (13 wins, 9 losses, 1 draw, 113.3%), 4th after finals Notable ins: Elijah Hollands (Gold Coast) Notable outs: Zac Fisher (North Melbourne), Paddy Dow (St Kilda), Ed Curnow (retired)

Which is the real Carlton? The side severely underperforming mid-way through Michael Voss’ second year in charge, languishing in 15th spot on the ladder and feeling the ire of a furious fan base? Or the one taking the competition by storm at season’s end, winning 11 of their last 13 games and only falling short against Brisbane in a preliminary final? Belief is now sky-high again on the back of that fairytale run and the Blues are tipped by many to challenge for the flag. But it is also possible the truth could land somewhere in between Carlton’s split personality of 2023.

The big test is how Carlton this time handle the weight of expectation and it's one they have failed repeatedly in recent times. In 2022, a spot in the eight was theirs to lose and lose it they did. Four straight losses to finish that season saw them miss the finals by a percentage of just 0.6%. And when it was assumed they would be hardened by that experience, the Blues went the other way and looked a shell of themselves to start last year. Yes, they turned it around but only after being completely written off after being so awful and were playing with house money, every win a bonus. Take even that preliminary final - Brisbane were the better side but Carlton kicked the first five goals of the game before coughing up control.

The truth is that they are a significantly better the side than the one that failed to find connection early last season and they should certainly not regress back to that place again. Charlie Curnow is the reigning dual Coleman-medallist, an imposing figure up forward. Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh and Adam Cerra lead an A-grade midfield. And Jacob Weitering is an elite full-back, skipping the flashy stuff to just get the job done on the opposition’s best forward every week. Any side with all of them up and about will win more games than they lose.

There is more talent than that on the list but not all are quite as dependable. Mitch McGovern, Jack Martin and Zac Williams were all recruited in previous years on big money and all have been massive disappointments relative to their pay packets. Harry McKay partners Curnow in the forward line but since winning a Coleman of his own in 2021, has struggled badly with accuracy. There were moments last year when he seemed to epitomise his entire club’s psychological state, all at sea and completely devoid of confidence. Some of his misses had to be seen to be believed.

Anything is indeed possible at Carlton this season: something remarkable, certainly, but also the unremarkable. In their first 14 scheduled games, Carlton are slated to play seven Thursday or Friday night games. If they pick up where they left off and start well, the Blues will rival Collingwood as the hottest ticket in town. If it goes the other way the AFL will face a scheduling nightmare and the knives, always ready to be sharpened at Carlton, won’t stay stored away for long.
