sudden and giant spurt of energy to learn japanese again at approx. 11pm - 3:30 am. what i did:

-downloaded like twenty free-to-start japanese apps on my phone (specifically w/ a focus on writing hiragana and katakana, bc previously i’ve been using duolingo and duolingo isn’t designed to deal with teaching scripts)

-tested like 14 of those apps before i found one i really got into for like an hour and then it wanted me to physically write stuff

-my desk was messy and all my brush pens are in the messy storage room so i cleaned off my desk and braved the non-ac part of the house to get the brush pens and somehow got distracted and cleaned/rearranged some stuff out there

-came back into my room and setup to practice writing which involved a variety of miscellaneous prep and then spent another hour or so on the same app, then tired out a bit

-finished testing all the apps and now am vaguely tired and writing this

one thing i learned very quickly while looking at the apps is that there seems to be a division between teaching japanese language speaking/reading(hiragana and katakana) and teaching japanese writing(hiragana and katakana) and teaching japanese kanji. i say it like this because the first division seems to primarily exists because slotting japanese writing into a generic “language learning format” just doesn’t really work well. so you get a lot of apps that start with related western alphabets/languages that don’t bother teaching you how to write symbols you’re unfamiliar with. strangely there aren’t many apps that combine the first two categories, although you’d think it’d be useful in a japanese-focused app. and finally i can understand the last division, from a technical and resource standpoint— kanji are just... lots of them. easier to program/work with the smaller set of hiragana and katakana. it still sucks because i want to be learning the kanji at the same time i’m learning words for other concepts, so that i can RECOGNIZE BASIC WORDS if they ain’t there with furigana, but.... even were i to enroll in an actual language course for japanese, i couldn’t guarantee that they’d try to do that either, so.

also i tried getting back to lingtopia today but turns out it straight-up broke in the japanese version like.... Right after i stopped the other night. a couple scattered reports of the same thing on the steam page and it looks like the dev isn’t actively watching after the project anymore, so i don’t have much hope that that will be fixed. (though it seems to be only an issue in the japanese language version— so still possibly a good avenue for gamification of other language learning...)

currently there are a couple apps that are most intriguing to me and a bunch of ones i have kept around as stuff to fill in the gaps, so to speak. dunno how much i’ll actually be using them, but i have em now!

Hi!!!  

I actually design things and work in printing for my main job so I have access to things like Adobe photoshop and Adobe illustrator (I do my painting/retouching in photoshop and everything else in illustrator). But it’s hella expensive so I try to look at free alternatives.

I have a bunch of asset/resource sites I use for photos and fonts. Sorry I tend to ramble so here we go.

Firstly I have a lot of free resource sites that I can get high-res assets from. I often am using things for commercial purposes because I get paid to do what I do. But for most people, they don’t have to worry so much about it bc they’re making it for themselves, but it’s always nice to have high-res assets still.

When I get a concept, I look for imagery that inspires me from sites like these and I can usually find what I’m looking for. The amount of beautiful, free, high-res images out there is amazing. 

Good rule of thumb is that you can always make a big image smaller, but never make a small image bigger, so always download the biggest size you can and size to your needs. -holding SHIFT when resizing keeps things in proportion when scaling-

I usually use pexels and freepik as my default. There are sooo many image sites I could list but here are the ones I use.

For BTS photos I look via google for images over 4MP (usually dispatch or official photos are my go-to).

I use photoshop to cut them out and retouch, but there is another editing tool I’ve been experimenting with called Photopea, which is a FREE online editing tool that’s just as powerful. It even looks like photoshop so it’s pretty comfortable to use.

I make my banners at 1600px x 350px, but i realized tumblr auto resizes anyway [LIKE A BITCHASS PUNK IM MAD ABT IT AND FOUND A WORKAROUND thats for another post tho]. I keep my DPI higher in case I want to use it for printing at some point, but that’s optional -72 is perfect for what you’re doing.

Custom fonts can be your friend or the enemy. If you’re using a scripty one, try to make sure it’s legible with your title (there are some really terrible ones out there, but there are so many good ones too). 

The easiest and quickest font place I use is dafont bc you can choose fonts based on the style you’re going for and you can test your text before you decide to download. They can be loaded into photopea! Also they’re free:

As far as editing goes, I tend to choose a color theme based on feelings and adobe has a site that can help you by showing you palettes based on search terms. ( you can even search for things like happy, sad, angry, etc)

I tend to use fuzzy edge brushes on everything to make it look soft, especially in lighting. The trick is just layers upon layers with different blending modes

I use “Color”, “Saturation” and “Overlay” modes a lot.

Ignore my layer names: I’m a mess.

So in steps you can see 1)original cutout

2) adding effects like busted lip (a brush i downloaded for PS–I don’t think these import to photopea unfortunately), bruising (textures set to overlay/multiply using different colors), earrings (hand-painted over the originals for a cleaner edge), and EYES (eyes i tend to cut from the main layer, copy above, lighten/contrast the shit out of them and change the color using “replace color” or “hue/sat” or blob color on a new layer and set it to “color” blending mode and then paint over –there’s a lot of ways to do it– but then blend them back into the photo in a natural-ish way)

3) lighting overlays give color to the skin and you can use colors from your background to create interesting pop effects (in this case i used purple)

A Review of Lingodeer

I’m really excited to bring you guys another app review today!

Lingodeer is a brand new app that is designed by actual language teachers/native speakers for specifically learning the three main East Asian languages: Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. And it’s totally free! If you haven’t heard of them before, you can check them out here: https://www.lingodeer.com/

I’ve actually been wanting to review this app for a while, but the iOS version wasn’t available until just the other day (and I only own Apple devices!).

Disclaimer: At the time of writing this review, the (iOS version) app is currently build 1.0, so any of the following may or may not change going forward as updates are applied.

Unlike for my review of the Duolingo Korean course, I did not complete the entire available skill tree that Lingodeer’s app offers. I found going through the lessons that there wasn’t any need to complete the tree in the vain hopes that the course might magically get better. Lingodeer is very good right out of the gate.

Your first stop on the app is the “alphabet” section, as it should be. Like Duolingo, Lingodeer unfortunately uses a form of romanization to teach the letters (see my Duolingo review for an explanation about why that’s bad) but that’s where the similarities stop. Lingodeer presents the Hangul letters in an order that actually makes sense, and in a way where learners can understand they are actually using letters to build sounds and eventually, words. Also, stroke order! That was a delightful and welcome surprise, which will come in handy for users actually wanting to learn to write the letters properly.

Heading into the first set of lessons (the “Nationality” section of the above screenshot) the user is greeted with a list of the lessons contained in the section, and to the left side, a menu labeled “Learning Tips”. When I selected the first lesson, I was initially disappointed to see that the romanization followed me but I quickly found that there is a setting the user can toggle to switch between Hangul and romanization, Hangul only, and romanization only.

Jumping right into the lesson, the user begins learning words and grammar that are pertinent for beginners to know, which is again, something Duolingo fails at. Additionally, all the audio is voiced by a native Korean speaker, and the quality is very clear and easy to understand.

The exercises in the lessons are fairly standard for apps of this nature (match a picture to a word/sound, unscramble sentences, listen to a bit of audio and enter the answer, choose the word/grammar bit that doesn’t belong, etc) and are on the whole unremarkable. However there was a conspicuous lack of explanations about why the grammar works the way it does, why the lesson kept trying to drill -은/는 into my brain with no indication about why it was important... Until I accidentally brushed part of the screen with one of my fingers on my way to the “next” button and a small window popped up to explain the word and grammar I had unintentionally poked at! There is no indication on any of the exercises or lesson screens that the user can press the words or grammar points for tips, instead of just blindly clicking through the lesson and guessing.

Upon completing the first two lessons, I decided to check out the “Learning Tips” menu from the lesson selection screen, and found the in depth answers for all my previous questions and more were contained there. I feel like the app and users would benefit from somehow marking very clearly that this is the location to find all that information, instead of hiding it behind an ambiguous “tips” label, especially when the tips in the lessons themselves exist (invisible though they are). In my opinion this section should be required reading, especially as this app is directed towards total beginners, however even something like “grammar explanations” would be a big step up from “tips”. Putting an indicator somewhere on the lesson screen to draw attention to the fact tips are available there too would be a good idea as well.

The app also contains a review section, where the user can practice and review both vocabulary and grammar that they have covered in completed lessons, which negates the need for a separate SRS app at the very beginning stages of learning (though I do recommend it at higher levels).

And a bonus that does not pertain to the Korean section of the app itself: I encountered a bug while using the app and sent off a support email. I received a very prompt and polite response regarding it, and assurances they were working on fixing the issue. :) Lovely people over there at Lingodeer.

That all said, there are a couple things I don’t like about the app and it’s claims. First and foremost, there is no option to test out of skills or individual lessons. The app is designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge, yes, but being unable to test out of parts of the skill tree is discouraging for not-exactly-absolute-beginner users. Instead of having to spend the time to complete a whole bunch of lessons to get to one or two they might need, not-quite-newbies are better off just looking up the information online for a quicker answer.

Second, the listing on the app store claims that by using the app you will be at the “intermediate” level of knowledge, and the official website claims that if you complete all the lessons you will speak your target language. I find both of these claims laughable--the contents of the lessons will get the user to a mid-high beginner at best (late A2 on the CEFR scale) and the app doesn’t have any speaking exercises at all. Speaking recall can be very difficult if the learner is not actively practicing it. Remember: No one app, book series, website, or lesson set will be enough to get you anywhere near fluency alone.

But ultimately, the Lingodeer app is a very, very big step in the right direction and is everything Duolingo should have been but wasn’t. I would definitely recommend using Lingodeer along side a good set of grammar textbooks or when taking a class.

I feel this is a risky post.

1. I dont tell you and you never know or you never believe you do have a kid

My Heritage is cheapest but anyone can see your DNA. 23andme you can hide it from the public but the militaries have access (limited just to match they dont download it) and DNA4U is a private currently not on the market company as they have never been and will not be soon as all their resources are going to this crisis.

So if you have suffered from breast cancer, its Likley you have had given birth.

They tried to do that to me when I was 13. But my dad fought them.

So i believe that most cancers are a lie. That cancer doesn't exist.

That does not mean people have suffered.

Focus on you.

Remember you are good enough to be loved.

The duplicates page now starts on the 'prep' tab if work needs doing, review service panels now highlight repository errors in red text, the edit subs panel is cleaned and has less spammy help, and the 'restore from backup' command now works with and reports text updates to the exit splash.

A handful of users have had trouble in recent versions getting the windows hydrus executable to run. There are different problems for different users with both the old and new versions of the exe bundler I use, and I am moving back up to the latest this week, as it seems to be less bad overall. If you had trouble booting since v400 and v403 again does not boot for you, please roll back to the last version that did work and let me know. There does not seem to be a great solution here, but maybe with more info I can figure something out, or at least properly diagnose it.

Next week is a 'medium sized job' week. I want to write a 'list manager' to manage and remember presentation options for all the multi-column lists across the program. The ideal here will be to have selectable columns and columns that remember their last width. It will open the program to supporting clever and specific columns, initially hidden due to size constraints, for things like the edit subscriptions list in future. There are many lists in the program, and a lot of code here, so I am not sure how far I will get, but I think I'll be able to do column width memory at the least.
