Yknow. I learned a few days ago that there is a surprisingly not minuscule fandom for the short skit series Welcome To The Table by Ben Brainard (which is basically about personified states discussing topical events together). And that there is not, in fact, a fandom for the short skits by Dr. Glaucomflecken (which is basically about personified medical fields / occupations working in a hospital together). I wish there was way more love for Dr. Glaucomflecken’s series. Please. If anyone has watched it before or watches it because of this post, please talk to me about it! I hyperfixated on it for a good while a couple months back, and am getting back into it.
Are you Stephen's Jonathan? (Doctor Glaucomflecken (medical comedy YouTuber) reference)
Stephen watches those videos all the time! They remind him of his former life and finds them very relatable and funny.
I certainly think I am! He hasn't said it explicitly, but I think he thinks of me as his 'Jonathan'. We all know how he looks at me.
With all the incompetent stories I've heard of Stephen's surgical assistants, I'm sure I'd be a great assistant for surgery! Then I'd be his 'Jonathan' for real!!
the thing they don’t tell you about actively learning about how systems and institutions work, even casually, is that in any realismish fiction dealing with said systems you end up spending a not-insignificant amount of time going “no that’s not how it works” or “no you can’t do that” or “no that’s not a sick hack but actually a crime” or “no actually that would be obvious to pretty much any competent member of the profession” or my favorite “no I think your main character is just kind of bad at their job”
I understand suspension of disbelief and the very real need sometimes to balance realism and story, that’s not what this is not what this post is about. I’m not here to blame writers or producers for making the creative and practical decisions that are necessary to get any price of art to the finish line. far be it from me to try and claim expertise or worse go all cinemasins about it. this post is about the purely personal and very annoying problem I’ve inflicted upon myself by subscribing to too many lawyer and doctor and infrastructure youtube channels.
I've been watching a lot of Dr Glaucomflecken recently and as someone who's been on (prescribed) medication almost their entire life, the fact that the US has to bring capitalism into their healthcare offends me (well, that they have to bring it into anything but especially healthcare)
I mean, it's not that there aren't problems with healthcare here in the UK too (I'm on the last pen for my injection and we've tried for months to get more but haven't been able to because of supply issues. Luckily, it's not one of those meds where if I don't take it, I die. Also the doctor in charge of that medicine suggested an alternative so while the supply issues are ongoing, I still get the healthcare benefits. At least as long as the substitute isn't subject to supply issues) but the American healthcare system almost makes the British one seem like heaven
This isn't even a joke it's just the objective truth. You can ask my family I spent most of Christmas Eve trying to convince my grandparents to get a railing installed on their back porch
