Yay more people appreciating Nick Suzuki’s face!! He really does have an excellent face!
[in reference to the tags on this post]
Nick Suzuki is so slept on as a handsome man, which is par for the course for both racism reasons and no one on planet earth appreciating men with stern faces that transform when they see the light of their life (Cole Caufield), but my god. Also I know I have the benefit of having seen him in person (one time) and quite frequently hockey players with 😐 online faces are more handsome in person so sometimes people just don't have the lived experience yk, but come ON. He's handsome!! Habs need to light up this man's world like nobody else.

I’d love to see a little bit of Patrick Jane absolutely destroying James McGyver over his parenting decisions, if you’d like to share
WITH PLEASURE
this needs some revision and some fleshing out, it's still very barebones but it's one of the first things that came into my mind for bad blood. some explanation of what's going on here found here.
“How long did he spend in the system, James? How long did you just leave your son in foster care while you ran around doing whatever it is you do?” “Oh cut it out, Patrick, he was never in the system.” There’s a mocking tone in the way he repeats Patrick’s words back to him, as if that were a ludicrous assumption rather than a perfectly logical conclusion to have drawn. “He was with family.” “We had no other siblings and mom is dead, who the hell could you possibly have-” It clicks in that moment, and it all makes sense. Harry’s house, the slight tinge of guilt at the edge of James’s expression. “Your father? You dumped him on Harry? Because he was the epitome of emotional availability and responsible parenting and absolutely up to the task of raising a kid who lost his mother and his father. Jesus, James.” “What else was I supposed to do, since apparently you have all the right answers. What was I supposed to do? I couldn’t take him with me. So please, by all means, enlighten me.” A hand sweeps out between them, James indicating that Patrick has the floor. It’s clear he thinks he’s pulled the trump card, ended the argument then and there, but Patrick has the answer ready before James has hardly posed the question. “Me, Jamie, you leave him with me. You know I’d have taken him in a second.” The childhood nickname slips out, an endearment worn and warped and soured into a curse.

I’d love to hear more about Carey Price and the CCM goalie gear!
hey there! thanks a bunch for the ask! i know its been sitting a while but now i just remembered to get around to this!
Carey Price (and many other Habs goaltenders over the years, tbh) has been very influential on the world of goaltender equipment in general, but especially CCM's catalogue as he was one of their longtime "faces" of their goalie equipment and arguably one of their most notable (besides Marc-Andre Fleury for awhile there, too). he originally started with Vaughn in the early days of his career, as we can see here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vaughn at this time was much bigger in goalie in the NHL than they are these days, the only real notable goalie they have now as far as I know is Jonathan Quick. But, if you're CCM and you're seeing a lights out, absolutely killer goaltender like Carey Price starting to emerge in the mid 2000s, you're likely going to want him to wear your stuff, with your logo, right? If this goalie is wearing your stuff, everyone who plays and wants to be like him will likely try to emulate him, right?
Hockey brands will often send pros equipment tuned to their specs in an attempt to get them to switch all the time for this exact reason- but I can't really think of any other instance of a brand going as far as CCM did in the case of Carey Price.
To understand what I'm specifically talking about, I have to first introduce the concept of break angle- this is a term in goalie equipment that refers to the way and at what angle a goalie glove/trapper closes. The three you'll often hear of are the 580 break (90° closure), the 590 break (60° closure), and the 600 break (50° closure). No two gloves are the same, so a 600 break from Vaughn will be different than a 600 break from Bauer, and so on and so forth.
Here's a chart that should give a better visual on what each of the three look like and how they differ:
Tumblr media
At this time, Carey Price's glove with Vaughn was most similar to what we would call CCM's 600 break today. They actually created the 600 break in order to help Price transition out of the Vaughn glove he was using at that time. As you can see with what appears to be one of his first CCM sets, the Extreme Flex III that he had circa 2012-2013, the glove is very similar looking to the one he had with Vaughn:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, some bonus info because I think it's funny: Carey Price no longer uses a 600 break, and has since switched to the 590 as of a couple years ago (something that caused a bit of controversy at that time). He also is no longer with CCM, as CCM Goalie cut ties with the Lefevre family a couple years ago now. The Lefevre family, who are well renowned for their excellence and innovation in goaltender equipment. Where they go, most NHL goalies will follow. Lefevre is now working with True Temper, and that explains the severe uptick in NHL goaltenders using their pads, gloves, and blockers.
Here's some of his True setups because I think they're neat:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah! Basically, TLDR: CCM invented the 600 break angle, a break angle that is still popular at the retail level to this day, specifically for Carey Price to switch to their equipment from Vaughn.

So I don’t have any inside knowledge or anything but from what I know about the PWHPA, their goal has always been to have a sustainable women’s league that could be a full time option for female hockey players, like the NHL, where no one needs to have a day job/another job to pay the bills because they’re making a living from hockey and players don’t have to worry about fitting in practice times really early in the morning or late in the evening around other things. From everything I’ve heard and read, they wouldn’t be taking these steps unless they felt confident that they had a long term league option that would pay at least a good living wage and likely more, have health insurance, a CBA, and all that. It might take a little bit to get everything sorted out but I have full confidence (and also a feeling that the ‘contracts being voided’ is legal terminology/reporters trying not to be wrong and that people will have new contracts soon, but the whole structure of everything is currently changing)
ahhh thank you for trying to calm me down. I need it.
That's true, and that's why i was happy for the pwhpa when they announced their own league. i felt like they were taking a route they believed in. and i wanted to see them grow!! i wanted to find a team in their new league to cheer for!
i thought that the phf was working toward that goal - to make Woho sustainable -, too but taking a different route. Much like the women's rights movements in the US in the 1900's. (sorry, historian: one organization went via the states and the other went federal gov and both hated each other for a long time before one got absorbed into the other..... oh ..)
i was that 'oh boy two cakes!' comic to be honest.
im just worried panicking a little over something that will not be clear tonight. yeah, the voided language sounds like legalese and the results for contracts will probably be better for the players. but....
but im more worried about the players who made it to the pfh and signed - thinking they would play next season - are now out in the wind. less teams and players?! the phf was growing, not shrinking!
i would love it if tomorrow it comes out that its seven more teams, each with a roster of 23 players. and the pwhpa players get priority slots on those teams. That would be nice.

I would love to hear more about what’s so special about cherubim/the hierarchy of angels, as someone who grew up Protestant Christian (yes this is about the Jack Eichel tattoo post)
oh boy here it goes. so forewarning that it's been a little while since i Really read up on this stuff, so some of my knowledge is fuzzy & supplemented by wiki, googling, and discussion with o (the person in the screenshots who i was screaming over this with, b/c she is my buddy who screams with me about cross-textual interpretations of hockey with art, the classics, literature, & religions. she also lets me yell about race dynamics and socialism + organizational/corporate structure through the lens of hockey. we have fun lmao). other big caveat: i'm explaining things mostly from the perspective of a believer, which i am not anymore. but i like to play in the sandbox of catholic theology & the cathecism b/c if i've gotta live with that religious trauma and juggle the contradiction of cultural religious artifacts vs living colonialism for the rest of my life, then i think i get to play with the funky little brain worms it gave me.
so first order of business -- as far as i'm aware it's taken less seriously in most protestant christian denominations than in catholicism & orthodox denominations, but we've gotta define an angel. angels are not human. they've never been human. they never can be human. they are supernatural beings, created purely by g-d*, and whose purpose is to serve g-d directly. in contrast, humans are g-d's creations but were given free will by his love. saints are humans who were elevated to the status of direct communication to g-d but are not imbued with the unlimited power of angels. and then there are some cases in which the archangels like gabriel and michael are also simultaneously saints, bc their interaction with humans is so central to their purpose that they become nearly human. in some sects, satan/lucifer was an archangel, prior to the fall; in some, he's just a regular angel, no special class or order; and in others he's a cherubim, which i will get back around to, but it works to introduce the concept here.
so, re:Jack it's notable that he got neither the Mother (virgin, mary, etc names) nor any saints as i first guessed. the Mother is perhaps the most universally revered saint/figure worldwide for all catholics. my understanding is she is also quite revered in orthodox traditions, but i'm not as versed there, and from here forward i'm going to address specifically catholicism b/c that's my experience & knowledge + that's what relates to jack. i'd put getting a tattoo of the Mother as pretty high up there for catholic tattoos (the catholic church does not have an official stance on tattooing, compared to other denominations, & largely b/c the permissiveness of tattooing alongside other localizations of catholicism helped it spread easier & keep deeper roots in its colonized cultures; again, i am an american viet catholic & i delicately balance viet-localized parts of catholicism as a familial cultural practice in my personal identity, while not actually being religious). i have also heavily considered getting a tattoo of the Mother, partially bc i find the genre of religious dedication folk art very beautiful and partially bc i think getting a religious tattoo would get my mother to be more permissive of my attempts to be a walking scribble book.
Anyway -- right after Mother tattoos, the next most common is getting a tattoo of common/popular saints and/or one's patron saint. when catholics go through the rite of Confirmation into the church, which recognizes an individual as an 'adult' in the church (age varies by local parishes or overlap with culture; my parents said in viet nam they were confirmed at age 16. growing up in oklahoma where the age of consent is 14 & i went to a primarily white anglo parish, i was confirmed at age 14. my friends who went to the viet parish were confirmed at age 15. my friends who went to mexican parishes were confirmed at age 15 & sometimes did cross-ceremonies with their quinceaneras), part of the confirmation process includes selecting a patron saint. when children are baptized into the catholic church (usually as infants), their parents will choose a patron saint for them, usually one of the common ones (st francis, who guides the lost; st patrick, who wards off evil; st gabriel the archangel, the messenger; mother/virgin mary, mother of all) or they'll 'inherit' the patron saint of their parents or godparents. some people choose to keep that saint when they confirm, but many choose their own (admittedly, often partially b/c a lot of ppl forget or are never told the saint they were given at baptism). in the catholic church, you are then known by your given name with your patron saint following like a title (quelle surprise, i was one of those kids who took it Very seriously and researched for weeks to choose my saint. officially, my christian name is aily, st dymphna of gheel. she's a martyr who is the patron of mental illness, amongst many other things. i chose her after i was first diagnosed with depression as a teenager.) saints matter b/c they're our communicators to god; think of them like a legislative representative.
ok, so basically what i'm saying is: if jack is presumably at least religious enough to get a tattoo with heavy religious iconography (and 'religious enough' is perhaps a bad attempt at measurement, b/c religiousness is a very weird amorphous spectrum which means we just Don't Know unless we talk to a person directly and hash out their philosophies), then he would presumably be religious enough to kinda give a fuck about his saints or the Mother or other figures of common revere. so it's not just that he chose not to get a common catholic tattoo. it's that he chose Specifically to get something different but also pretty immense in its catholic iconography.
okie dokie, Now it is time to get into the specifics of the cherubim and bring back a couple things i mentioned earlier: so. again. cherubim are Angels, not saints, not spirits, not ever have been human. they are in the first sphere or order of angels, meaning the ones closest to g-d; they are the second tier/rank of that order. this is notable for jack primarily bc it's a 'motif' of his Narrative to be second. it's like a nod to being Good, being so close to g-d, but not being the closest. good enough to be a beloved & regular servant of g-d (hockey) but not quite enough for recognition. it's not a seraphim, the highest rank in the first order, who maintain the holy order of the universe and have the greatest scope of divine knowledge. it's also not an archangel, who are closest to human and in that way depicted as most beloved by god (note how they have names, unlike the scores of other angels) and who are given divine missions imparted from divine knowledge. the archangels are beloved most by g-d of the orders of angels and they are also understood and revered most by humans, g-d's most beloved creations.
in The Narrative, jack is not those who maintain the divine (the seraphim, hockey legends like gretzky, orr, howe), and he's not those who enact g-d's divine mission (the archangels, current stars or fan favorites like crosby, ovechkin, mcdavid), yet he's also not a common angel who exists only as an embodiment to praise g-d ('average' players). he's a cherubim, close to the divine, allowed to attend to the divine (allowed to make hockey 'better') but not given the divine knowledge or a divine mission (not a legend, not a fan favorite, not someone hockey as an institution looks to as a messenger of the gospel). and i get that that sounds very dramatic and severe -- jack Is a very well-known player who only dedicated haters truly believe isn't 'good enough' and the league does like to use his likeness to drum up attention, to some degree. but it's worth remembering that his choice to ransom his own career for medical autonomy (and i genuinely have refused to stop describing it in any other way, bc that is what happened, no matter how we can try to sanitize it) has actually made him into a wildcard that the league does not like dealing without a lot of whitewashing. he didn't make it easier for himself in the long-run by choosing to speak out about his health and decisions like he did. it's a virtue of how good a hockey player he is and how much the league wants to profit off of him that kept his career and story from being buried.
going back to the cherubim of it all -- it's also a little funny when you go into the classical uses of cherubim. the cherubim as depicted in jack's tattoo is a very old style of depicting them, or i guess more fundamentalist/traditionalist. cherubim as they have been popularly depicted, thanks to the overlap of greco-roman art traditions, are what people also colloquially call 'cupids' (in art and the classics, they're referred to by their italian name putti plural or putto singular). they're fat babies with wings. because of the blended cherub-cupid depictions, they've also taken on cupid-like qualities in folk tradition. they're mischievous, playful, and omni-present. in classical art, they're dropped everywhere like little easter eggs, as a reminder of g-d's omnipresence & the plurality of his power. so, it's a little hilarious that jack's tattoo is accidentally and extra-textually winking and nudging at the cheekier parts of his personality, while still acknowledging that he's part of the plurality. again, he's not a seraph, he's not an archangel; instead, in his narrative, he's one small representative, good enough to get close, not good enough to be recognized.
and then of course, there's the even funnier potential meta where, by some sects of catholicism (most notably st thomas aquinas), lucifer himself was a cherub; an angel who was close enough to be a good servant but not close enough to have power and not beloved enough to be near g-d's most beloved, which is how he became enraged enough to attempt to strike against g-d, to fight over creation, to be struck from heaven and more importantly away from the holy presence. lucifer chose a path, lucifer as an angel, a creation of g-d whose sole purpose is to serve and who was never meant to have autonomy, made a choice that was not about/for/in spirit of g-d. and for that he was punished and taken away from all redemption, bc redemption is not an option for angels. they are not humans, they can't be forgiven. no, i am not going further on hitting this nail on the head for how this could feed into the meta of jack's narrative. i think this stands on its own.
and that, friends, is the expanded screeching of why jack's tattoo entirely set me & o off. i'm sure o also has additional notes or clarification. @drartemysia feel free to add on :)
*i'm using 'g-d' in reference to the name of the higher being. for some, it is sacrilegious or even a sin to use/see the 'name' with intent of direct reference to the higher being without censoring. it's a practice across different abrahamic traditions with different levels of seriousness and can be heavily contextual. i tend to censor when actually directly referencing, versus say when i say 'god' as an exclamation or goddamn as a curse, which admittedly is also sacrilegious depending on personal interpretations (taking g-d's name in vain, etc etc). i make the distinction also bc i prefer to use capitalization for emphasis rather than for grammar or titles, so distinguishing the use as proper name vs colloquial expression helps me stay on track of my own train of thought.

I have an NHL rules/CBA question: when a team buys a player out, does that player still get paid the rest of the contract in some form? How does that work?
So yes and no?
So the players will get payed a portion (1/3 if they're younger than 26 @ time of buyout & 2/3 if they're 26 or older @ time of buyout) of the remaining contract value over a span of time double that of the remaining length of the contract. As well as their signing bonuses
The team/league then does a bunch of math to determine the cap hit for each year of the buyout timeline. 35+ contracts are weird and have other conditions to hit, but the cap hit can stay the same but they wont be counted towards the roster and the salary required to be payed out is only 2/3s the actual contract.

Find the Words Tag
I was tagged by @thethistlegirlwrites! Thanks, dear one!
Searching chapter 11 of A World of His Own, or what I have for it at least!
Light:
“Hey, Harriet,” Jon said as he sat up, properly this time. “Thanks for the help.” “You’re welcome,” Harriet chirped, setting a large plastic bag down on the floor by the sofa and untying the handles. “Martin, I didn’t know what sorts of clothes you generally prefer, but I did my best." She retrieved a pair of jeans, a plastic three-pack of white t-shirts, similar packs of socks and underpants, a light green button-up, and pajama trousers made of some light, soft material in a similar shade.
Star:
Hoping it wasn’t a terrible decision, Jon slowly and deliberately lay back down against Martin’s side, grabbed Martin’s arm and returned it to its previous position around his person, and snuggled in as close to Martin as he could possibly get. Martin’s arm around him tightened in a half-hug, and he tilted his head to rest it on Jon’s, even though it had to be putting his neck at a somewhat awkward angle. “Stars, that's adorable,” declared Harriet’s voice from the gust of wind sweeping through the living room.
Touch and Water:
When he was met with only more awful silence, Jon took a deep breath, removed his nightshirt, grabbed the damp towel he'd used to dry off, and stood. "Martin, I'm coming in, if that's all right." When he didn't hear an objection, Jon pulled back the curtain and stepped into the shower. Immediately, he hissed in pain. The water was hot, hotter than could possibly have been comfortable even in cold weather, let alone on a relatively warm day like today. Jon adjusted the temperature until it was still hot but no longer painful, then let himself properly look at Martin. Martin was standing unnervingly still, skin an angry deep pink where the water touched it, staring straight ahead with a blank expression.
Tagging @hauntedsuns, @emthetimelady, @runarelle, @dragonsthough101, and anyone else who sees this and wants to play! Your words are "think," "hurt," "warm," and "luck" or "lucky"!

List 5 things that make you happy, then put this in the askbox for the last 10 people who liked or reblogged something from you! Get to know your mutuals and followers ❤️
1. Weather. In general. Especially now that the weather is changing so I get to appreciate varieties of weather I haven’t experienced in a while! The sky was very blue today and it was lovely 🩵
2. My church, and the community I have through it. It makes me so happy to have a place where all my enthusiasm and weirdness and visible difference are absolutely welcome.
3. My friends and family. @thethistlegirl @dragonsthough101 @hauntedsuns @runarelle @thefaestolemyname @starsandsupernovae @emthetimelady @tempestvista and everyone else on this webbed site I’ve ever connected with, plus the ones who aren’t on here, especially aquantumkitten and my parents and sister. I love you all.
4. My writing. I’m working on chapter twelve of the Giant Sprawling AU fic that is A World of His Own, and I’m having an excellent time with it, not to mention making friends (see above).
5. The fact that a) I just decided that an inside joke about Helen the Distortion as an armadillo has evolved to the point that my writing sideblog (@catwings-writes-things) needs a specific tag for it, and b) that the tag I came up with for this purpose was “helen the armadillostortion”. This probably isn’t as funny to anyone else as it is to me, but I’m getting a kick out of it.

I’m not sure you’ll actually get this ask, as I think I’m still shadowbanned but I wanted to share my public skate adventures today. Today I got to public skate (which is at an NHL practice rink) and there were lots of teenage boys in hockey gear (notably neither group was wearing gear for the team that practices at this rink), and there is apparently some kind of tournament happening with a game after public skate. Which meant that there was a crowd of teenage boys who can play hockey well watching public skate (luckily mostly from the upper floor looking over the rink and stands but sometimes from the benches or lower stands). Unlike the last time there was a crowd at public skate for an event after, I did not fall over, and I decided to stop caring about 20 minutes in, but it was still a thing sometimes. Public skate was good overall and I decided that I was just going to keep (unsuccessfully) trying to backwards skate even with the audience (and do other fun things)
digging in my inbox for non-ask game asks to respond to and just found this delightful one that i think i missed while while you were shadowbanned. i love this so much and I'm glad it was good overall! I hope you have been able to keep trying to go backwards skating!
Teenage hockey players can be so intimidating to skate in front of I agree, but I think after a while it gets easier once you realize they are just teenagers. Or maybe I'm just inured from Sharks Ice being a youth hockey tournament hub 7 days a week on top of their huge beer league, but after a while it was kinda like...well what can I do about it. They can't leave the premises because they don't have a car.

Hi it’s Dragonsthough101 again, I’d love to hear about either of the Jack/Marchy fics!
hiiii @dragonsthough101
i've already talked about down to the marrow here (with plans to finish it.... hopefully before the end of the year)
so you get "you don't have to leave so soon"
which is the same prompt, but this one is the joke one, because it's based off a tiktok, which this is the closest i can find to the original
wherein Jack and marchy leave some party, Reilly saying "you don't have to leave so soon" and Marchy just, jumping on Jack's shoulders and slapping the top of the door as they leave. why did i do this to myself? IDK it was funny at the time.

I originally thought Mark was older than Max until either Oli or Gav (@flaticeball) told me otherwise and I was very surprised 😄
lmaaoo patch has got a slightly younger face than his age and (kindly) mark looks probably a bit older than he is. i’m sure the captaincy also influences ppl to see him as An Authority which is often associated with age.
it is particularly funny to remember mark being 3.5 years younger than patch and entering the league like 4 seasons after max. so here is this gangly ass 20yo getting under patch’s skin while patch is like 23yo on a habs team that is trying to prove it is not a failed o6 legacy. patch is trying So Hard to be a Real Adult on a team with a 19yo brendan gallagher and 18yo alex galchenyuk. he’s inherited primary scorer on the team after cammalleri’s controversial trade the prior season. his linemates are a journeyman veteran whose claim to fame was as an A on the cane’s cup-winning team and an undrafted undersized center who worked his way up from the echl. their line name is the two and a half men line. he’s only 23 but he met his now-wife as a 19yo rookie bc his wife is one of his ex-teammates’ sisters who he respectfully asked out after she first inquired her big brother about the cute rookie. he settled down Immediately and married her when he was like 22. he bought a house in brossard near the training facilities the same offseason he got married. he is trying So Hard to be taken seriously here.
and this fuckass barely-not-a-teen overgrown muppet fresh out the whl is getting under his damn skin! this is so fucking undignified!
anyway lol they end up teammates and linemates and besties like 7-ish years later on a team that didn’t even exist when they first made life hard on each other. max is much chiller now, not trying so hard to prove he belongs, not burdened by a franchise and captaincy that he never thought could become so heavy. the overgrown muppet is maybe still annoying, but at least it’s not directed at him anymore.
