Durand Jones & Kara Jackson Live Show Review: 5/9, Lincoln Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Even if you’re familiar with the retro stylings of Durand Jones & The Indications, Wait Til I Get Over (Dead Oceans) is a reintroduction. The solo debut for Jones is inspired by his roots in Hillaryville, Louisiana, a town established as part of reparations to previously enslaved Black folks, and it sees him grappling with his biographical history while gaining a greater sense of self. Contextualized in the duality of the South--the beauty of the landscapes and the simultaneous institutional racism that’s devastated it--Jones’ record traverses a swath of Black music, from soul and rock and roll to R&B and gospel. With spoken word interludes, hymnals, prayers, and laments, all backed by guitar, bass, keys, and drums, he’s provided a contemporary classic.
Tumblr media
Playing his first solo show in Chicago on Tuesday at Lincoln Hall, Jones brought many of the album’s players with him, including drummer Ben Lumsdaine, guitarist Drake Ritter, keyboardist Matt Romy, and bassist Glenn Myers. They gave all the songs on Wait Til I Get Over the “Lord Have Mercy” treatment. On that first single from the record, Jones sings, “Can you see me in those sad, smiling eyes?” emphasizing the further contradictions within himself, his desire to overcome by keeping on. Similarly, it was the celebratory aspects of the music that shone live, the raw guitars and slinky bass and Jones’ dancing. He let out cathartic James Brown-level screams during “I Want You”, a described prayer for music written during a stint working at a science lab before music was his full-time employment. Though the orchestral flourishes on the studio versions of songs like “Gerri Marie” and “That Feeling” give them a cinematic feel, the songs didn’t lack drama on Tuesday. The moment Jones walked out on stage, clad in a fitted blue suit with white stripes, a saxophone in one hand and a drink in the other, you knew you were in for a show.
Tumblr media
Further, sharing the stories behind the album, both in the rollout to the release of Wait Til I Get Over and Tuesday night, proved therapeutic for Jones, who has been citing James Baldwin’s belief in “strength in vulnerability.” That includes both the blue-eyed doo wop of “Sadie” and “That Feeling”, the latter of which was not only the first breakup song Jones has ever written but his first love song written to another man, effectively his coming out as bisexual. During the middle of “Some Day We’ll All Be Free”, essentially a Donny Hathaway cover with a verse from rapper Skypp injected in middle, Jones cited another vanguard of Black art, Nina Simone. “To be free is to live without fear,” he quoted over the band’s percussive funk, later declaring, “Love will win.” It’s the same sense of radical optimism that permeates a song like “See It Through”, existing alongside the doubts and sorrow, and the very ethos of Wait Til I Get Over. Towards the end of the show, Jones admitted that he almost had to cancel the tour; a bout with food poisoning led to 3 ER trips and a lost voice. But with patience and belief, Jones has used the spirit of the album and seemingly every show to move one step closer to where he needs to go, personally and communally.
Tumblr media
Oak Park’s Kara Jackson has also released a hell of a debut, Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love? (September); like Jones’, her set acted more as an introduction of a newfound voice than a faithful recreation of her released songs. Playing acoustically, Jackson sang a few new tunes in a short set, plus two from her 2019 EP A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart and Karen Dalton’s “Right, Wrong or Ready”. The latter showcased a few of the talents that would extend throughout the set: Jackson’s smoky, controlled, octave-leaping voice, her dexterous finger-picked guitar playing, her effective tempo changes. But the songs from Why Does The Earth were the true indicators of her poetry. At multiple times, the audience howled with laughter at Jackson’s directness. “Every man thinks I’m his fuckin’ mother,” she sang on “therapy”. “And if seeing you naked wasn’t such a bargain / It would be a home run,” she quipped on “no fun/party” right as her dress strap inadvertently fell, an admitted possible cosmic wink. Of course, “dickhead blues”, whose very announcement garnered the most cheers to an audience clearly already familiar with Jackson, was the highlight. The crowd wowed at how her wordplay and delivery followed along with her guitars during lines like, “My dilemma is always a dickhead / Who’s drunk on the daily news / Like coyotes in culottes / Clawin’ for coffee in open-toed shoes.”
Tumblr media
I admit that I can’t wait to hear what Jackson’s new songs sound like with a full band, should she decide to play with one. On the album, she collaborated with Chicago wunderkinds KAINA, NNAMDÏ, and Sen Morimoto, whose lush, shimmering instrumentation alongside Jodi’s slide guitar gives many of the album’s songs a borderline theatrical feel, the furthest thing from Tuesday’s stark arrangements. Jackson was never going to play 7-minute epics like “free” and “rat” in a short opening set, nor the heartbreaking title track of her new album, an ode to romantic and platonic love, inspired by the death of a dear friend in high school. “I’ve buried old and young / I’ve watched them lower a saint / We’re only waiting our turn / Call that living?” she sings. Its wistfulness would not have been the best way to prime a crowd for Jones’ life-affirming songs, which Jackson undoubtedly knew. What she does have in common with Jones is the sheer ability to punch you in the gut, with a one-liner, bluesy guitar lick, or an octave change. Inevitably and deservedly, in due time, they’ll both be headlining bigger stages and reaching more people with the power of their stories.

No writing credits for JK on the Golden tracklist.
Not a massive surprise there. He's not got the motivation to write right now from what we've seen - he just wants to sing and dance and perform before he enlists. Can't really judge the guy for that.
Plus he's got some names on there that we can be pretty sure he's into. Ignoring the 2 tracks we've already heard, we've got writers like Blake Slatkin who's worked with Justin Bieber, Kid Laroi (👀) and Sam Smith, Jon Bellion who, again, has written for Bieber and also Halsey and Camila Cabello, and Allen Ritter who's produced for Drake, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Then you've got Shot Glass Of Tears and Too Sad To Dance from the writer(s) who came up with Dynamite, and big names such as Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes.
So, although he hasn't written any of the tracks himself, I think it's fair to say that JK's own musical tastes and history are pretty well reflected just in the people that have been a part of creating the songs he's singing.
Boy's truly living his best popstar life and I'm here for it 🖤

krysten ritter / she/her ——— no way is that KALI DICAMILLO.. they’re a 36-year-old HUMAN notoriously known for being STUBBORN & SNARKY but there are some people who have seen them being INTUITIVE & DILIGENT. if you ask me, they remind me a lot of chipped dark nail polish, constantly cleaning grease from fingernails, deadpanned responses, whiskey in coffee, multiple tool kits for every occasion, but that could just be because they’re considered the DEADPAN SNARKER around town. just keep an eye on them & see if their true colors shine through..
GENERAL.
full name: kali anne dicamillo nicknames: kal classification: enhanced human gender / pronouns: demi-woman, she/they age / birthday: 36, december 16th orientations: pansexual, demiromantic occupation: cyber technician & mechanic status: single family: jovi dicamillo (sister), lydia dicamillo (sister) strengths: intuitive, diligent, tough, honest, observant weaknesses: stubborn, sarcastic, indulgent, impatient, cold character inspo: tbd
BIOGRAPHY.
tw: accident
from the minute kali was born she was a disappointment to her mother. she was reminded often that she'd been the one to ruin her mother's dreams. she heard it for years and by the time lydia and jovi came along, they were hardened by it.
it was no secret that kali had a much better relationship with their father, but in general they became closed off emotionally, not trusting that they'd be accepted by anyone. however, they did their best to make sure their sisters always knew how much they cared about them.
to further ruin their mother's hopes of making her own personal star, kali had a bad accident when she was two years old that left her deaf in one ear and hard of hearing in the other, along with some metal plating on her skull. because of this they learned to sign before speaking
besides that, kali wasn't going to ever fit the part of beauty queen. they didn't feel like the pretty little girl with bows and dresses, hell, they didn't feel like a girl. instead, they built robots and took apart electronics and put them back together again.
this led to a further interest in cybernetics, robotics, and general mechanics. they went to college to study it further and the rest they've learned either in the field or through books, videos, etc. since it's all constantly changing.
kali did their initial internship for drake industries but didn't like the way it seemed so elite and ended up going to carpenter repairs and doing back alley work to help others on the side.
in their early twenties their tinnitus got so bad they nearly went completely deaf but got bionic ears installed instead. on occasion kali will shut them off to focus or not deal with people, but otherwise she can hear quite well if they are on.
they come off as cold and uncaring but they care about their family and close friends quite a bit, kali just has a funny way of showing it sometimes.
HEADCANONS.

Dark Night of the Scarecrow
Tumblr media
There are some critics who consider Frank De Felitta’s TV movie DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW (1981, Shudder, Peacock, AMC+, Tubi, YouTube) one of the greatest horror films ever made. To paraphrase one of my favorite lines from THE NORMAN CONQUEST: there are also people who like being thrown into canals. I do not happen to be one of them. Despite a few nice touches and one or two spooky scenes, the picture is wildly uneven and at times laughable.
Tumblr media
Small-town bigots led by the postmaster (Charles Durning, who’s not bad but looks a touch absurd spreading evil in a polyethylene sun helmet) have a hate on for Bubba Ritter (Larry Drake), a young man with a cognitive disability. When his playmate (Tonya Crowe) is injured by a dog while trespassing, the yahoos assume Drake killed her, because if they didn’t, there would be no plot. They find him hiding in a field pretending to be a scarecrow, kill him and place a pitchfork in his hand to make it look like self-defense. Then each sees a scarecrow where one shouldn’t be before dying in mysterious ways. When one encounters the scarecrow, the wind changes and the object’s arm starts to move. It’s one of the few decent chills in the picture.
Part of the film’s problem is that writer J.D. Feigelson has turned most of the small-town characters into raging stereotypes, stupid and violent. When they catch Drake in his scarecrow suit, Durning stares at him for a seeming eternity trying to figure out what’s off about him even though you can clearly see the man’s face through the eye holes. And Durning’s room at the local boarding house (run by Large Marge herself, Alice Nunn) has enough guns to make J.D. Vance’s grandmother jealous. Once the killings start, the surviving men seriously think they’re being committed by Drake’s grieving mother (Jocelyn Brando, who’s quite good), an overweight woman in her sixties they imagine climbing into one man’s hayloft and pushing him into the mouth of a woodchipper. That kill, by the way, is the silliest in the film. It’s not just that it’s obviously telegraphed, with the farmer (Lane Smith) coming home late, hearing the woodchipper running in his barn, and going in to investigate. He turns it off, but when he goes to check the hayloft, it comes on again, so you know where he’s headed. Then De Felitta cuts from a zoom into the machine to a close shot of some red preserves being dumped on Durning’s breakfast plate. Is this what it takes to be a great horror film? I don’t think Hitchcock, Murnau, Lang or James Whale have anything to worry about.

GAME IDEA
I Have an idea for a Zelda like game where if you beat the 5 bosses of the game in the tutorial as they gang up on you can beat the game early and get a fairy tale ending, which is not necessarily the best ending.
While if I actually make the game is uncertain it is still a good exercise in design.
Here are the designs I have so far and criticism is welcome.
Engel Ritter
Engel Ritter the faceless gentleman. She will be the main character of the game. I designed her to look androgynous and basic similar to most nes protagonists.
Tumblr media
She will play similarly to nes link, simply stabbing her spear forward but you need to time her block as it only lasts for a second. Some of the other abilities that she will gain are a dash, a parry, and a revolver.
Saijan the spirit king
He is invisible until you get an item later in the game (This includes the first encounter).
Tumblr media
Saijan's fight consists of whipping attacks, area control attacks, and slow moving homing attacks. His dungeon consist of a haunted graveyard with objects that fly at and attack you in reality the objects are just being manipulated by Saijan and you just can't see him.
Ratginuld Brutherfford the symmetrical
Most straight forward boss and simply swings his axe around and you attack him between swings. He is the only boss that takes himself seriously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can get out of his boss fight if you give him a land deed to allow him and his people to peacefully move into your country. Rat's primary colors are the cooler gray and blue to display his more calm personality as the only boss you can talk out of fighting. He also had a splash of an aggressive red to show his aggression.
His dungeon will be a shanty town that his people set up and the grey Koba don't attack you straight away allowing you to talk to them.
The mad mage Mot
He is designed to be frustrating. In the opening fight of the game he will do undodgeable attacks that you need to block. Mot knows he is annoying and loves it.
Tumblr media
(still not sure on his coloration.)
Mot Dungeon is one giant puzzle where he constantly runs away from you and you need to change the dungeon's layout to catch him. If mot goes five times in a loop he will strike you with lightning and change the layout of the dungeon to change his course and if you sit idle for too long in the dungeon he will strike you with lightning.
Doag Duke Hazard the cosmic drake
Doag is rocket propelled drake who will fly around his arena trying to burn Engel with his thrusters and make long range attacks at her. Doag's main weapon is some of the 2nd amendment that he stole from a hunter in New Jersey. Engel after the fight can gain and weld the power of gun.
Tumblr media
( I messed up while coloring him and now he looks like a ketchup splotch.)
He stole all of the kingdom's booze and stored it in a bath house he stole. The dungeon's gimmick is the flowing rivers of flammable booze that you light on fire to solve puzzles.
Rorrim servant of Apofis
He is the game's mirror match fighting Engel with the same moves she has. Rorrim's Design is meant to mirror and contrast Engel's with both their designs leaving their gender somewhat ambiguous, Engel wearing practical clothes and Rorrim not, and Rorrim covering the top half of his face and Engel not.
You will get the dash ability from him.
Tumblr media
(As to why he has a dress I just drew it and thought he looked good in it.)
His dungeon will be an old manor he is refurbishing and as you get further into the dungeon it becomes more Egyptian.
Any advice or critiques are welcome.

Roofscapes of the City: We spend most of our time on the ground in the city, looking up. The roofs of the city are another world that, quite literally, give us a whole new perspective on things! The tops of buildings are a frequently underutilized - and frequently underdesigned - resource that we have successfully utilized for years, energizing the lives of tenants and of the city at large. A recent Drexel grad, Chris Hytha (www.hythacg.com), has been in the news for his photographs of the crowns of city buildings, most often Art Deco buildings, built when the urge for beauty had not yet been so overwhelmed by economics. The Drake, behind the Kimmel Center, originally a hotel designed by Philadelphia's premier Art Deco architects, Ritter and Shay (another story), was one of his subjects. At Symphony House we consciously sought to create a roofscape that echoed the Drake in a less fanciful but equally romantic way. Modernist buildings can do the same. At 3737 Chestnut, our glass tower was articulated to create a sheltered terrace with spectacular views of the skyline and the horizon. This roofscape of the city, once the hallmark of modernity, is, we believe, an important resource. Where else could Superman find Lois Lane?
