So anyway, speaking of Dreamlight Valley, last night i had a dream about it except it was Dreamworks instead of Disney and here's what I remember about that fucking monstrosity:

Shrek is the first villager you unlock naturally, and every time you hang out with him, that shitty midi version of All Star plays in the background

Donkey is there too and he offers to make you waffles (he never does)

Fiona was also there. That is all I remember about Fiona

Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws were villagers but their house was almost always inaccessible, mostly because i presume there were in there having crazy cat sex at all times

Will Smith Fish from Shark Tale moved in but immediately died because he just appeared in the plaza and had no water so he flopped around until he died thank god

The two dudes from El Dorado were there and were roommates and I thought that was pretty gay but where the fuck was Chel

Every Hour on the Hour King Julian from Madagascar showed up in the plaza and hosted a Mandatory Dance Party

Barry B Benson from Bee Movie was there but every time you spoke to him he would quote the Bee Movie Script in its entirety before getting to any actual quest dialogue

Instead of Remy's restaurant, Po from Kung Fu Panda hosted a dojo where he teaches you to beat the fuck out of any villagers you don't like

Hiccup and Astrid were there and were roommates (Good for them, they're canonically married after all) and so was Toothless but he was Concerningly Off Model I was scared

Megamind was there. That is all I remember about Megamind.

The Penguins of Madagascar weren't technically villagers but they kept showing up all over the valley to spy on me

Boss Baby showed up at one point and I kicked his ass thanks to the kung fu Po taught me

The game ended when Moses from Prince of Egypt showed up and called upon God to smite the village and my game cartrige caught fire irl

Noe Bodi Gameplay: Day 27, Part 2

The first stop for Rain Drop (@riverofjazzsims) in the community area was the food stall. Some tropical fruits only added to her bright mood.

But look, from up yonder...our first neighbor interaction. Look at him go!

Riaan (@wibblywobblytumblywumbly) didn't remember seeing this new girl on his local networking rounds. He'd already declared himself the finest sim in Sulani. But this girl seemed so enchanting, Riaan was no longer sure. He HAD to meet her.

"Hi! I'm Rain!"

"...I'm...Riaan." In his head: our names sound too similar, why is she wearing purple like me, her hands are webbed, dammit she's a mermaid, probably came to rule the town, gotta keep my guard up--

But far from threatening his position, Rain merely asked him to help her build a sand sculpture. Right there in front of the food stall.

....This man has HAD IT.

But they weren't there for long, and the sand sculpture ended up looking perfect.

So teamwork made the dreamwork, therefore they can be friends now, right?

Wrong. Riaan still had this mean mugging look at my girl. And I did not like that.

Rain wasn't perturbed whatsoever. This guy presented a challenge, and Rain likes a challenge.

So the rest of their conversation was smooth as butter, and when Rain sent him on his way, he was still floating in a flirty haze.

When Rain returned home, she went straight to making a vegetable platter.

And while she was doing that, Townie Paka'a Uha just decided to ENTER. RAIN'S. HOUSE.

UNINVITED.

UNANNOUNCED.

Now I personally would have been pissed enough to call down a storm as a mermaid. But Rain simply called out, "Yoohoo! Hello there!" And Paka'a came running out like he didn't do anything wrong. "Oh hi miss, I seemed to have gotten lost, I was looking for the shipwreck, blah blah blah--"

And rain said, with a sweet smile, "That's quite alright. Just, you know, never enter my home again. If you want a long and happy life."

He left BIG mad. Ha!

ANYWAY, while the BBQ Searer was doing its thing, Rain had the urge to beachcomb. A lot. And she got THREE PIRATE TREASURE MAPS!!!

By the third map, the meal was ready.

And look at this lil pose she made when she entered the house. What a precious pearl.

Anyway, after dinner, she took out the ambergris she found that morning, opened up her handy-dandy Mermaid Tome and started making ambergris wax. Apparently sailors put this on their nets to ward off mermaids. It's not like Rain would ever use this herself, but knowing how the enemy makes their weapons could only keep her safe, even on an island where mermaids are celebrated.

And, oh look. The Mothman (@occultradio) is back again--

Companies I've Applied To

I figured that as I embark on my quest to Get Hired, I should probably document the process for both myself and for others who are trying to get their foot in the door for industry work.

For context (and for those of you who don't know), I have a Bachelor's of Fine Art in Emerging Media: Character Animation and an Master's of Fine Art in Animation and VFX. I graduated in spring of 2022 after completing a fully independent short film, and have been working as a "visiting lecturer" at my University ever since.

My Employment History

When you're looking to get hired, your past work experience matters... a lot. Because of how intense my Undergrad/Graduate programs were, I didn't have a lot of time to cultivate my portfolio or bolster my resume. Getting hired by the University right out of college was a huge relief, but it doesn't tick that pesky "2+ years of Industry Experience" or "At least 1 AAA Game Shipped" prerequisite on most job postings.

With that in mind, I'm doing my best to push for the "or equivalent experience" caveat.

What I Do:

I've mentioned this a few times on this blog, but my professional focus is in 3D character modeling, rigging, groom, and sim. In the art field, this is usually considered a technical job, and from what I understand the market for tech is usually a little less competitive than the market for modeling/animation.

So, with all that out of the way, let's get to it!

DreamWorks:

I sent in my application for Character Tech Anim about three days after the posting opened. They had their own hiring website through nbcUniversal. I'd gone through the process before with internships, so it was pretty painless! It's a remote position, which is huge, and the salary would be competitive with the one I have now as long as I can stay remote.

Biggest con in my application is that I'm still missing Python proficiency. I'm learning it right now, but god damn is it an in-demand skill!

It's a job I'd love to get, and I think my skills in rigging/groom/sim line up well.

Process Pros:

Easy to apply.

Clear (and reasonable!) qualifications listed for the job level.

Honest about expectations regarding overtime and hours.

Allowed PDF uploads of CV & Resume.

Sent a confirmation email after the application had been received.

Had a section for "Additional Comments", which was a great place for me to throw in that I'm learning some of the skills they want.

Process Cons:

Likely will not receive a rejection notice in the event they decide not to hire. This isn't a huge con; the studio is massive and sending out rejection notices would be a time sink for them.

Advertised working weekends and overtime in the listing... definitely something I'll ask about if I move forward in the process. Work/life balance is important!

Had to enter my resume information and upload my resume. :(

Result: Too Soon to Tell

Gearbox:

I sent in my application for Technical Animator (Character Rigger) about two weeks after the listing was posted. They had their own hiring website. This is a hybrid position, which wouldn't be ideal, but a friend of a friend works remotely for them, so maybe it's negotiable?

Biggest con in my application is, yet again, that I'm still missing Python proficiency and tool dev experience. Learning it now!

I was missing a lot of the credentials on this one, so it's more of a hail-Mary application.

Process Pros:

Easy to apply.

Clear (and reasonable!) qualifications listed for the job level.

Allowed PDF uploads of CV & Resume.

Sent a confirmation email after the application had been received. Seems to promise a prompt response, which means I can likely expect a notice of rejection if they choose not to hire.

Company culture seems extremely reasonable and employee health is a priority.

Process Cons:

May have to relocate if hired.

Result: Too Soon to Tell

Aquent:

Honestly... no idea what was happening here. It was for a character rigging position, but it seems like it might've been for a broader hiring agency?

Process Pros:

Allowed PDF upload of CV and Resume.

Process Cons:

Had to apply for the job and make a separate account on their website to set up the application.

Confusing website.

Had to upload resume and then type up the resume again.

No place for a CV for the specific role.

Honestly, I'm not sure what company this went to.

Result: Too Soon to Tell

Steamroller:

Local studio that I've seen a lot of people go into! Applied for a rigging position in their animation department. Hybrid and remote are both an option for me!

Process Pros:

Allowed PDF upload of CV and Resume.

Easy to apply!

Received a confirmation email.

Credentials were clear and well listed; I matched most of the requirements.

Competitive salary! :)

Flexible work methods.

Allowed me to link to my website AND upload a static portfolio, which I love.

Process Cons:

Likely will not receive a rejection notice should they choose not to hire.

Result: Rejected (03/21/2023)

BonusXP:

Can't speak about the process much on this one! They have a rolling, general application process which means I just send in an email and if a job comes up, they'll let me know. Feels straightforward and simple. :)

Thoughts on Rise of the Titans

SPOILERS ahead

First, I have to say the movie didn’t go the expected way, at all. Instead of moving forward... it quite did the opposite. That’s not my cup of tea, and let’s take the Futurama finale as example: while I think it’s beautiful and well thought, the idea of them living their lifes again and againg makes me a tad uneasy. But let’s stop talking about finales and start with the beginning: 

-Blinky is doing the narration. So he lives. :)

-While I quite enjoy the recap (and hearing Jim joining it), I feel it wasn’t needed.

-But the music...

-Bellroc always seemed the stronger one for me.

-Oh, so no filling the gaps, huh?

-Whoa, Claire has gotten so good at magic.

-I’ve spent the whole fight gasping every time Jim gets hurt.

-The “no-magic-cannon-force” is quite a good idea.

-Wait, they’re calling them “wizards” now?

-Nari in Douxie’s body is both hilarious and weird.

-Poor Toby, he’s desperate to make people know he’s cool.

-At least Merlin left the plans in his chamber. That’s... a good thing for how many wrong?

-Yeah, we already know magic and Akiridion tech mixes well.

-And Krel’s still wearing the suit...

-Oh, no, they’re married? Wait, what? Wait, no. No, no, no, don’t go that way.

-Just like the Sims. At least we may see some cute alien babies.

-Eli has Neville-Longbottomed hard.

-Just Nari’s presence working sounds bad. But I guess it was the only way to do it.

-Hey, it was Brazil and Asia!

-I can’t help it, but the waterfall in front of the Earth Titan... at least they’re watering along the way...

-No, don’t split. I hate that kind of quests because you normally focus on one. I mean, this time is different because each one has a fav character, but I was sure I was going to be more invested in Claire and Blinky’s one. And I did.

Let’s talk about the quests separatedly:

1. Earth: After a while thinking how hard is for Nomura to avoid the sun, she gets killed just like that. Douxie trying to get up was funny, but once he woke Nari up, I knew they were going to go Titan v.s. Titan.

2. Ice: They get TV up there? Anyway, I was weirdly excited to see Jim, Barbara and Strickler with winter clothes. Aja was... weirdly annoying. I mean, I don’t like her when she’s in “I’m a warrior princess” mode, but she was trying to do her own thing and not listening to others. And Strickler... no, seriously, no. And right after they got ridden of Nomura. But hey, it was interesting to see the cannons and I loved that Toby was there. Poor Toby feels like he has to do an extra effort to be at par his friends and that’s not okay. At least we get the answer: Jim’s father doesn’t deserve an explanation.

3. Fire: The new Trollmarket it’s cool, but I feel like it could have been... just a little more. It was so funny when Archie convinces his father to go because “he likes how much Blinky screams” and the flight scene was top-notch, but hey, it’s DreamWorks. The Kronisphere... I’ve seen too much stuff like that, but anyway. When I saw it in the trailer I thought it was a piece of the Heart of Avalon and that’s because of the color. The fight was alright but Jim burning his hand for opening the gate... Archie staying behind... the robot/Titan fight... everything was in another level. Such a shame it was for nothing.

-Lots of things were for nothing.

-I would have loved to see Jim struggling with getting back to being normal, but we got Toby (and Jim at some part) struggling with not feeling “special” enough.

-Have to say I love the new encantation: “For the good of all...” and that’s what the movie forced its way to.

-Seeing Coach Lawrence and all the students again was nice, but I would’ve love to see Darci and Mary talking about all that has happened.

-Just how big is Arcadia? They have a natural park too?

-Wait, the Arcane Order can die? They can die.

-Poor Douxie. Even though we don’t know how much time has passed until Nari was found, I bet he was quite attached to her.

-I feel like Eli was brought back for just a “gasp” moment. He didn’t do anything at all!

-Steve’s pregnancy is just... disturbing.

-I don’t get it, why does everybody have to show their support for Jim so he can wield Excalibur?

-As much as I love the “become” speech, having all the characters (many of them who shouldn’t have heard it) say it didn’t feel right.

-Hey, at least Stuart gets to do something.

-You get yeeted, you get yeeted, you get yeeted...

-Why-did-you-take-off-your-armor-Toby?

-See? Poor thing has self-esteem issues.

-The new armor is still weird.

-No, Toby, no... and... crushed...inside...a car.

-Time-turning is the new “It was all a dream”.

-Wait, I thought he was going back to... doesn’t matter.

-Jim just wanted a normal life after all.

-I have so many questions: How does Merlin know Toby is worthy too? Blinky is going to train him (I bet so)? What’s going to be Jim’s weapon? Is Toby going to the Darklands to save Enrique? Will Claire still be a sorceress? If that doesn’t work, they will go back in time again and then Claire is going to be the Trollhunter? 

-I would’ve loved to see the new storyline in the credits. And a Douxie song.

-Wait, no Zoe?

Italy... I'm just in love with everything about it, like, the food, the culture, the nature... Actually I was supposed to go on a school trip there last September, but it was postponed to September 2020. and y'all can guess that ain't gonna happen now 😩😭

2. What do you do in your free time away from sims?

Oh, the ussual, watching TV, scrolling through social media... Also homework, because the schools might be closed, but they're not canceled 😅

3. What other games do you play besides the Sims?

Umm... None 😂 I did play a lot of hidden object games before I got into this whole The Sims business tho. Those were the good days, might replay some of those one day 😅

Photography... I used to be like, super into it back in freshman year... Would be nice to get back to it someday 😏

Oof, that's a hard one... Well, when it comes to a band, I could say Maroon 5... As to solo performers... Passenger, Bryan Adams, Sting, James Bay, Phil Collins etc. (Sorry, I just. don't listen to music too much 😂 I have my playlist that I never update so yeah 😅)

Inspiration for muse : In the context of this blog, I think my #1 muse would have to be Nola from my Blood Legacy. She’s inspired, as many of you know, by my grandmother - also named Nola.

Dream job : I’d love to be successful enough as a musician to be able to support my family financially, but not successful enough that I became famous. I can hear my therapist’s heart palpitations from here. I’ve actually had a few different dreams in my life so I can keep going! I used to dream of being the owner of a sex shop called “The Love Shack”. I would also love to own a witch shop. Reading tarot cards, drinking tea and being surrounded by candles and incense all day sounds pretty much like heaven to me. I could plug my band in the shop too! It’s all coming together! Haha.

Meaning behind your URL : I’ve answered this one quite a few times before but I never get tired of it! My Mum and I started this blog together back in 20...10??? At the time, my username on the Sims website was BlackWeb6 (that username dates back to when I was an emo kid in high school circa 2005!) and my mum’s username was AliCats. So, naturally, when we decided to start a tumblr blog together for our simming adventures, we named it BlackCatSims!

Cats or dogs? Dog person 100%, but I can appreciate cats. They cute.

I kind of object to celebrity culture on principle but I must be a hypocrite because there’s heaps of famous musicians I borderline worship like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Mama Cass. 1. Dogs or Cats? Doggos! I am allergic to kitties :(

2. YouTube celebrities or normal celebrities? I am out of the youtube scene these days so probably normal celebs.

3. If you could live anywhere where would that be? Eh, not too picky. I like where I am but I just want to visit ALL the places. More Europe especially.

4. Disney or DreamWorks? Well, I work for Disney so I might be obligated to say them. But I like any good movie!

5. Favorite childhood TV show? A hard one. My first one that I obsessed over when I was younger was That’s So Raven.

6. The movie you’re looking forward to most in 2020? Onward, Mulan, Wonder Woman 1984, so many ohmygosh.

7. Favourite book you read in 2019? Probably Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. It was a much anticipated book for me this year since it was a sequel to a WONDERFUL BOOK (Carry On) that everyone should read.

8. Marvel or DC? Marvel for movies. DC for tv shows.

9. If you choose Marvel favourite member of the X-Men? If you choose DC’s favourite Justice League member? From X-men: Probably Storm or Rogue because I’m basic. And Wonder Woman all the way from DC.

10. Night or Day? Night. I am nocturnal.

11. Favourite Pokémon? Eevee! And every single Eevolution!

12. Top 5 bands: Oh lord this changes too much, but as for actual bands: 5sos, Bastille, Fall Out Boy, Panic!, & Mariana’s Trench

13. Top 10 books: Of all time? Well in no specific order: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, (honestly anything by Rainbow is *chefs kiss*), The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was fun, Daughter of a Pirate King also good, so many man. 14. Top 4 movies: DONT MAKE ME PICK! Anything Star Wars (Episode 7 is my fave tho), The Little Mermaid, Pride & Prejudice (2005), and uhhh The Greatest Showman.

15. America or Europe? Europe! I wanna go back so bad!

16. Tumblr or Twitter? Tumblr mostly. I use twitter to post my Depression(tm) thots.

17. Pro-choice or Pro-life? Pro-Choice.

18. Favourite YouTuber: I used to love danisnotonfire and amazingphil. That was my era of youtube. Still like them and wish them well in their endeavors. 

19. Favourite author? Currently: Rainbow Rowell.

20. Tea or coffee? Coffee doesn’t always agree with me but like it’s peppermint mocha season so sip sip bitches!

21. OTP? Uhh, so many. Kearemy from @mdebunny and @niympha is my current top.

dogs or cats? Dogs! I have a 9 year old English lab. Wrigley, my baby. Who grouns when he eats and always wants to cuddle. But honestly I like anything floofy!

youtube celebrities or normal celebrities? Can I say both. I feel like we fall in love with youtubers because of their personalities. But regular celebrities are more of a cinematic experience that most youtubers wouldn’t be able to duplicate.

if you could live anywhere where would be? Somewhere in the mountains. Remote. Off the grid where you are just continuously surrounded by the nature that cities have forgotten existed.

Disney or DreamWorks? Disney, I like the star Wars. Love all the aliens and species in the films. I was a swtor mmo player for a long time because of it. Yes I am letting the nerd out of the closet! :D

favorite childhood tv show(s)? Duck tales the movie. Rescue Rangers, Tailspin.Oh and Winnie the poo “The land of milk and honey movie” We were poor and only had movies lol

the movie you’re looking forward to most in 2020? David Copperfeild, Mulan, Artimes Fowl, I was super excited about Zombieland 2 that just came out! I haven't seen it yet. The new mutuants look pretty darn cool too.

favorite book you read in 2019? Hmm. I haven't had a chance to read a lot this year. I’ve been so busy. But “Red Rising’ By peirce Brown was AMAZING I could not put it down. Like a dystopian hunger games. That is just uuugggg soo good. I am going to read it again now!! lol

marvel or dc? I like characters from both but Dc: Green lantern, Flash, and Green Arrow. Of course Batman and all their amazing villians. Poison Ivy. Pengin. 

if you choose marvel favorite member of the X-men? if you choose DC favorite justice league member? He’s not a member, but I love The penguin. I do think Aqua man is pretty cool though all in all. He’s a little but of both the villain and the hero.

night or day? So I wake up for my job at like 4 something in the morning, and I tend to walk up generally pretty early on my days off because of that. But I am a night owl all the way. I will get some stuff done after 8 pm! LOL

favorite Pokémon? Oh man I remember when pokemon just came out. I loved Ninetails, but the last evalution. Cubone was cute. But I think out of the total original was squirtal

Top 5 Bands? This one is hard. Cuz I love me some songs. Hmmmm ones I cant live without. Queen. Freddy Mercury is a musical genious. I love me some Bruno Mars. Blink 182, Green Day. Red Hot chilli peppers, Lady Gaga. The eagles.  Rush and some Phil collins. Disturbed, Korn. Yeah my musical tastes are everywhere. Basically anything that bops.

do you play an instrument/ sing ? I used to play the flute, I was in marching band. This one time, at band camp..... no. I haven't played since then but I wish I never gave it up. I was pretty good!

Yes, I cannot deny the amount of geekiness in this post. But I embrace it.I am sorry I have not done this sooner. My grandfather has been very sick in the hospital, so thank you to you too for thinking of me. I needed this. <3
