Robots (2005)

Robots looks great. Every character is unique. The backgrounds are colorful and lively. You could easily take a still and have yourself a great-looking desktop wallpaper. The world these metal people inhabit is full of crazy inventions, things that move in interesting ways. If you contributed to the animation in this movie, pat yourself on the back. It's awesome. Too bad about the story though.

Set in a world of robots, Rodney Copperbottom (voiced by Ewan McGregor) travels to the big city to meet his idol, an inventor named Bigweld (Mel Brooks). Once there, he uncovers a sinister plot to turn all of the city's homeless into scrap. Rodney must team up with a group of quirky misfits to save the day.

I said "metal people" deliberately. The characters in this film are no more machines than the Tin Woodsman from Wizard of Oz. I don't want to get hung up on the fact that a movie about "robots" still includes behavior like eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom as something that machines should do but it's a letdown. You want this script to be smart, to think outside the box. It doesn't. Let’s just move on.

Now we get to the bug that causes the system to crash: the characters and story. Robots is set in one of these worlds where there are no police, no ethics, and no rules or laws. The story essentially has an evil CEO embarking on a campaign of villainy that begins by convincing his staff to stop making spare parts for older models. If you want to stay alive when you start breaking down from wear and tear, you’ve got to buy new, shiny parts. I realize real-world companies often prioritize their stockholders over the welfare of the general populace. What we don’t have are machines who search the streets for sickly/old citizens to turn them into fuel/food/construction materials like we do here. What kind of dystopian society advocates blatant murder like this?

The further you examine Robots the more questions you have. If Rodney can build a robot, is it a pet, or a sentient being? Did he just create a new species of animal? Why do robots fart? Where are the police? Where are the newspapers and news reporters that would expose cruel business decisions? What is the point of turning robots into scrap? Do they melt them down to make screws for other robots to eat? Is this considered cannibalism? How is it that robots grow up? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just build a grown-up robot from the get-go? Can you skip all but the last stages of building a robot and construct one that’s a minute away from death just to feel like a god as you witness the life escape from it?

You wouldn't have so many questions about the world of Robots if we got to explore and understand it. Most of what we get is padding. Robin William’s character, Fender, serves no purpose except to attempt to recreate his role in 1992's Aladdin. His dialogue is a constant stream of pop-culture references, including a lazy rendition of Singin’ in the Rain, nods to Braveheart, and a re-enactment of Brittney Spears’ Hit me Baby One More Time. Similarly, the two villains feel excessive. You could've combined them into one. The two female robots are poorly developed because - you guessed it - they should've been combined into one. It's 90 minutes long but how much shorter would it be without all of the robo-penis jokes?

I could've saved myself a lot of time by stating the simple fact that this is a comedy for children that - at best - contains five laughs. That’s one every 18 minutes. The story is cookie-cutter, the villains one-dimensional, and the rest of the cast could've been easily trimmed. It's set in a world that's as well-thought-out as a 10-year old’s imaginary battle between Superman and The Hulk in which Batman wins. It’s colourful and it moves quickly. There’s not much else to praise about Robots, particularly not the end scene in which - of course - everyone dances to a pop song. (On Blu-ray, July 3, 2015)
