Sylvia (pt 3) Fight
(Rose recalls the fight.)
Story based on Sylvias Mother: Dr Hook
In a parking lot six blocks away Rose gripped the steering wheel, her knuckles turning white.
In two hours she would be on a bus to California. Her bags had been packed, a place arranged for her to sleep at. She was expected. She couldn't stay and try to convince that cow to let her talk to Sylvia anymore. It had been two weeks already. She had tried catching Sylvia alone but someone was always there, watching. It wouldn't have been a big deal if the town hadn't already suspected something was going on.
Sylvia was a good girl. Never getting into trouble but Rose....people talked about Rose like she was an outsider. Something to gawk at. She was 20 years old and living on her own in her parents old house. Never went to church and wore the same clothes the boys wore. She was caught smoking and even drinking, sitting with her legs thrown every which way, swearing, never with a nice boy. Rumors she was doing black magic or worse, kissing other girls. When Sylvia had been caught more than once talking to Rose it had blemished the Avery Family name. Rose was nothing they couldn't buff out with marriage to the preachers son.
She was a pariah.
Rose's parents had been dead since she was 15. She thought the towns people would have helped but no. No, she wasn't worth the trouble she guessed. Once she had spotted some older ladies watching her at the coffee shop. When she passed by them she heard them whispering.
"-good thing too...if they saw what their daughter had turned into..."
The radio switched to another song.
~But she was too young to fall in love and I was too young to know. So why did I give my heart so fast? It never will happen again~
Rose felt her blood buzzing through her body, her heart too fast. She slammed her fist against the console turning off the music.
This was all her fault. Her and that damn church.
She knew Sylvia wouldn't do it but part of her had hoped she would. They would have lived together and Rose could have kissed her whenever she pleased. No hiding behind diners or in dark cars. California would have been different.
But Sylvie would be a good wife to some man. Probably Freddie. Give him some fair haired kids that grew up with the most loving and kind mother. they would be lucky.
Rose felt like a statue. Like her bones had turned to stone. She couldn't move. Didn't know what to do.
Tears spilled over her cheeks. For a moment she was reminded of the pictures of crying angels in cemeteries and of the argument.
" No Rose. I can't! I've told you....I..."
"Think of it Sylvie. You and me together. Really together!"
Sylvie had ripped her hands away tears forming.
"What would people think? It's a sin Rose! I'm...I'm not like you! I'm not a dyke!...I can't be."
The words had slapped Rose across the face. Hadn't they just made love an hour ago? Hadn't they held each other while their hearts soared? Hadn't Sylvie been happy the last six months? What did all of this even mean to her then? It meant the world to Rose. Sylvia was about to speak when Rose cut her off.
"Rose..."
"Fine. Go back to you miserable life."
Sylvie had tensed, her face twisted in regret but Rose couldn't stop.
"I know who and WHAT I am. Do you know what you are Sylvia Avery? You're a liar. You're lying to me right now and you'll lie to yourself tomorrow when you say you love Freddie. You'll be lying when his father reads the vows. Lying when you think of me and when you look in the mirror....lying when he screws you..." Rose remembered the taste of bile in her mouth at the thought. Sylvia's horrified face. "Go...just go. Your mother will be happy.... Gods watching Sylvia."
And just like that Rose had left Sylvia at the back door of the cream colored house. Rose knew why Sylvia had acted out. She knew it was scary and felt like you were looking over a dark chasm about to fall in...
She knew how conflicted Sylvia had been with her feelings and her upbringing...but still.
Her body returned to itself. She wiped her eyes and started towards the bus station.
If a normal life with Freddie and her parents was what Sylvia wanted that's what she would get.
If she wanted Rose she knew where to find her. She had two hours.

The error beep that my DVR makes is the same as the first note from “Brickhouse” by the Commodores. So, every time I do something the machine doesn’t like, I end up singing the whole first verse. I don’t have a problem with that. I’m just glad it’s not the first note of “Sylvia’s Mother.” Sorry, Doctor Hook. I still love “Sharing the Night Together!” #youmakemypantswanttogetupanddance #commodores #brickhouse #doctorhookandthemedicineshow #doctorhook #drhook #sylviasmother #1970s #goodmusic #badmusic #directv #dvr https://www.instagram.com/p/CEHnzunhArf/?igshid=1713zzutajng4

Sylvia (pt 2) A little bit more
Part 2 written haphazardly on my notes app. Enjoy.
(Sylvia recalls the perfect night)
On the second floor of a cream colored house a young girl lay crumpled in on herself, her face streaked with tears.
Sylvia wiped her nose on her cardigan sleeve.
Rose had called. What did she want? Was it to say sorry? Was she going to stay? What would Sylvia even say back? Would she fall apart at the seems?
None of it matter anyway. Freddie would be over after he finished helping his father tidy up the church. She would stand up straight and smile. Freddie would be dressed nicely and offer his arm. She would take it because that was the polite thing to do.
Then they would walk to the bus station together and head over to Galveston where Freddie's parents owned a cottage.
They wouldn't spend the weekend alone, oh no, that would not be proper. If people thought you were sinning....you were. Simple.
You had to keep a pure image in Gods eyes and in societies.
Pastor Doyle and his wife would arrive at dinner time and they would have pleasant conversation while keeping an eye on the two. Freddie and Sylvia would sleep at opposite ends of the house.
Sylvia tried thinking of the quiet cottage and how nice it'd be to sit by the river watching the geese fly over head, a nice breeze in the early summer air. Freddie's presence would be a constant slight annoyance but most of the time he was friendly.
She thought she was calming down until Rose's deep brown eyes peered through the darkness behind her eyelids. Those eyes that always seemed to dig into the deepest parts of her.
A sob wrenched itself from her chest.
She remembered the night they had argued. Only a few hours before the fight they had been alone at Rose's house. Always alone, they were careful about that. Maybe in other places it was okay but in this small town it was blasphemy.
Rose had laid blankets on the floor of the living room. Mountains of pillows surrounding them like a fortress. Sylvia had been lounging lazily on top of a bundle of blankets and pillows. Her eyes closed listening to the rain as it softly battered the windows.
Rose had gone to the kitchen to grab wine glasses.
The sound of glasses clanking together told Sylvia that Rose had returned.
She opened her eyes a smile lighting up her face.
Leaning against the door frame was Rose, she had been wearing her favorite Dr. Hook shirt and jean shorts. The ones that made her legs look so long. She had stopped to observe Sylvia, her eyes raking over the girl lying on the makeshift bed. She lifted two mason jars.
"Fancy." Sylvia chuckled.
Rose smirked. "Care for some music?" She asked, her eyes twinkling with something like mischief.
Sylvia nodded swallowing the butterflies that had fluttered up her throat. She had been so nervous. Nervous her parents would notice her gone this time, that someone would see them going inside the house together, nervous she would finally give in to whatever that erratic humming was in her heart every time Rose looked at her. Nervous the night would end.
Rose sat the jars on the coffee table next to a chilled bottle of cheap wine that was quickly turning room temperature.
Sylvia watched her. It had been hard for her to believe it was really happening and not just a dream. This raven haired girl stealing her away every night to sing to her. Always home by sunrise before the magic would disappear, the clock in town hall chiming. A shadow of a kiss at the window before flying off, back into the sky. A fairy tale.
Her mother's voice echoed in her head.
"there's something wrong with that girl Sylvie."
And the preacher the Sunday before.
"-an abomination! A disease spread by the devil's temptation! Disguised as good people!"
She grimaced and shut the voices away. How could something that tastes so sweet be wrong? Then again maybe that's what Eve had thought.
How could something that felt so heavenly sentence her to a life of eternal damnation? The feel of Rose's skin on hers was soul consuming.
Rose flicked on the radio.
The soft music fell from the speakers like water, the mans soothing deep voice dancing in the waves.
"When you think I've loved you all I can
I'm gonna love you a little bit more
Come on over here and lay by my side"
Rose sang along her body moving languidly towards Sylvia, a smirk on her lips. Sylvia wondered what flavor it was.
After they had drank their wine and listened to music they lay tangled with each other. They had shared delicate kisses and giggles. Then the kisses had become longer, more passionate, the giggles became breathless exclamations. It had been a night when the air was buzzing with electricity. Every touch and brush of lips felt like liquid fire against Sylvia's skin.
Rose had looked at her with those brown eyes, Sylvia had saw something swimming in the bourbon pools that made her tremble.
Something like love.
Sylvia didn't want to think about it, shaking her head in a desperate attempt to expel the memory. She wrapped herself in her blanket wanting to hide away. Her chest felt hollow and her eyes were sore. She had cried so much in the past 2 weeks her eyes felt tender to the touch.
Any minute now Freddie would come to fetch her. She hadn't even packed a bag yet.
Knock, knock.
"Sylvie, Freddie just called. He's running behind but should be here in the next half hour." Her mother's voice sounded calm and relaxed. As if Rose had never called. Freddie was a good boy. He was, really. He was just so boring. His favorite past time was to talk scripture and find new ways for his father to preach it. That and baseball.
Rose's favorite past times were music and dancing and long drives and kissing and....
Her parents wanted her to marry Freddie. Freddie's parents wanted him to marry Sylvia. They were a perfect match. She should do it. She'd have her own home. A husband. Children. The church. She would do her wifely duties and raise children. She would support Freddie when he got promoted or soothe him when the Yankees lost. She would have a normal, if not a little boring, life.
Rose would be gone.
The thought clawed at her chest like a wild animal. No! Don't let her go! It left her insides feeling raw and bloody.
It just wasn't possible. She couldn't go to California. Rose didn't understand. Rose didn't have a family keeping her here or the pressures of living a Godly life. What they did together was fun and exciting and felt so freeing. So wonderful. Delicious. But it was wrong wasn't it? A wrong that she had to make right. This was a test from God that was all.
What a jackass.
If she went she'd probably live in a small apartment listening to records everyday. Wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and Roses sweet singing as bacon sizzled. She'd support Rose when she got signed to a label and soothe her if a gig was cancelled.
If she left right now. Right now. She could make it to the bus station. She could run into Rose's arms and tell her she couldn't breathe without her. The Sun didnt feel as warm, the flowers didn't smell as sweet. She would apologize for calling her that name, beg on her knees if she had to, she would follow Rose anywhere, even to hell. Hell would be paradise if she had Rose with her.
Sylvia stared at the poster of Dolly Parton on her wall. What would Dolly do? Dolly was brave. Sylvia was a coward. No, no she just wanted to be normal that's all. She wanted to make her parents proud. She didn't want to go to hell.
Rose was impossible and sin.
Freddie was familiar and safe.
Knock knock
"Sylvia? It's time to pack. Freddie's here. Clean yourself up before he sees you." Her mother scolded through the door.
Had it been half an hour already?
