AMP x Harry Potter [Alternate Universe]

Fanum!HP au where Fanum's broken his wand five times by the time he's left Hogwarts, and Ollivander and him are practically friends once he's graduated. Ollivander's never been particularly close to any students, but was honoured to have Fanum as an apprentice post-Hogwarts, and even went on to be Ollivander's successor in selling wands. 

Duke Dennis!HP au where Duke's the Ilvermorny transfer in fifth year with the legato voice, southern accent and laid-back intonation that has all the Hogwarts girlies fawning and oftentimes following him down to the pitches to watch him play. His style of Quidditch is so different and it takes time to integrate him into the team, but he's dangerous weapon once he's been conditioned. 

Kai Cenat!HP au where Kai tried to use a spell that'd make him taller for the Yule ball, but instead accidentally swelled his ankles to the size of bludgers - giving himself six more inches of height, but also 6 more inches of bone, ligament and flesh around his ankle. He managed to persuade his crush two years above to go with him though, and she was already a couple inches taller than him - so instead of going to the hospital wing and getting his ankles shrunk? He just used a spell to lengthen his robes so that they'd cover his ankles, and prayed that his date knew how to dance and wasn't gonna accidentally hit his swollen (and slightly sensitive) ankles

Agent!HP au where he's best friends with Fanum and Kai, and they all follow Duke around when he first arrives - watching the tall transfer from a distance, and hissing seemingly-betrayed and heart-broken comments at one another as they watch the girls from their house (even the shy ones that'd never spoken a word to either of them) find Duke in the library and talk to him, or slow their pace down to just so happen to bump into Duke and walk with him to their next lesson!  Agent was the first to have a lession with Duke - sitting besides him in potions and being partners with one another. And Agent found out pretty soon that Duke was kinda stupid, with the way he scratched the back of his head, licking his lips and looking across at Agent with a completely perplexed expression - practically begging for his assistance. But through the lessons with the Duke, Agent realised that the meathead wasn't all that bad, and was actually kinda fun company - becoming Duke's first actual friend (not follower) within Hogwarts, and even further introducing Duke to Kai and Fanum and sharing a dorm altogether.

iShowSpeed!HP au where Speed hides behind the knights and will scare all the ghosts in the castle by barking every so often, literally terrorising Nearly Headless Nick, the Fat Friar, the Bloody Baron - but never the Grey Lady of Ravenclaw - he's actually surprisingly a gent to her, only being polite and respectful for her and surprisingly being the only student in Hogwarts who the Grey Lady will walk and sincerely talk with. As for the rest of the ghosts who report the behaviour to filch? Speed's too quick - he quite literally just runs back to his common room, and no matter where he is in the school - he's always so quick that he manages to outrun Filch back to his dorm where he's protected

There is no rest for the wicked, or the damned. Without fail, it seems that the Bourbon's are destined to fall into the latter rather than the former. It is almost laughable, how far they fall from their tentative heights. Wasn't it just a year ago that they celebrated their win against the rebels? The fourth horseman of the French apocalypse arrives in the page boy's news; the Duke and Duchess of Hanover had passed, after the effects of the poisonous attack ran its course. Like all things, they move into a plan of action. They alert those involved, they command their troops, and they lead as the King and Queen of France are wrought to do.

But that is the thing about death. Its finality arrives, and no matter what comes next, it demands to be recognized.

She's certain neither she and Dennis return to bed once the news arrives. They sprung into action, and though she is the first to return to their bedchamber, she does not turn her attention to bed. How could she? It is not as if either of them have slept in weeks. Rather, her attention turns to clothing. Unlike other French women, Jacqueline cared little for fashion. But she is a generale of France, and she knows the importance of honoring the departed.

"Dennis." She calls out, hearing the doors to their chamber open. The rest of their staff is sent to attend to the Duchy's of the Holy Roman Empire. And as a result, she is dressing herself. Last night's dress on the floor, standing in just her underdress. Christ. It is no wonder she chooses to dress simply - the corset alone is impossible without a maid. "I know there is plenty to do. But we must change first." She explains, gesturing to the clothing set on the bed; his black jacket and pants, her black gown."We must be in our mourning clothes before the rest of court rises."

In Defense of G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra

During the height of Michael Bay's Transformers series, Hasbro and Paramount collabed again to adapt another one of the former's famous toy brands. When G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra was released, the results were about the same as the average Michael Bay Transformers movie. Despite being financially successful, critics generally didn't care for it and mostly thought it was a dull action movie. Having rewatched the film for the first time in years, I'm of the opinion that this movie is not only a really cool action movie, but also my personal favorite film based on G.I. Joe thus far. Allow me to explain.

As the title of this movie suggests, this film serves as an origin story for the characters who would eventually become the Joes and Cobras we know from back in the 80s. The film utilizes flashback to showcase the origins to different characters as well as showing specific plot points for the film. The actual plot of this film is very fitting in introducing the Joes and Cobras and how they operate. MARS Industries creates nanotech warheads which have the potential to decimate entire cities. Once Cobra gets their hands on them its up to Duke, Ripcord and the rest of the Joes to save the day. In addition to having really strong writting and good pacing, the film as has some intense action scenes with very well rehearsed stuntwork and really good cinematography. The fight scenes between Snake Eyesr and Storm Shadow are easily my favorite parts of the whole film. There are also a couple moments of genuinely funny humor, particularly from Ripcord in his accelerator suit.

The characters in the film are all very entertaining and well defined in their personalities. Starting with our main hero, Duke is a brave, snarky and resourceful soldier who not only wants to save the world but also make things right with his ex (more on that later). Ripcord his Duke's funny best friend who tags along with Duke and also has some of the funniest moments in the film. Together, Duke and Ripcord serve as the eyes of the audience as we're introduced to fellow Joes Hawk, Heavy Duty, Scarlett, Breaker and fan favorite Snake Eyes. Hawk is the smart and brave leader of the Joes who trusts that his team can get the job done in the end. Heavy Duty serves as the field commander of the team and his presence is felt in every scene he's in. Scarlett is a very smart woman who's intelligence expertise is vital for the time. Breaker is the team's hacker who's known for his witty banter with Ripcord. Snake Eyes is very much the strong silent assassin who let's his actions speak loud than words. Together they form a great team that does everything they can to save the world. On to Cobra, the Baroness as Duke's ex-fiancee, giving her more of a personal connection to our hero. We also see Destro as the primary antagonist of the first half of the film being a sneaky arms dealer who creates the nanobite warheads. Zartan is a quirky assistant to Destro know for whistling For He's a Jolly Good Fellow from time to time. Storm Shadow is also present as a skilled marksman who doesn't hesitate to kill his target. Then there's their leader, Cobra Commander. At the start of the film he's simply referred to as the Doctor, an eccentric scientist who injected the Cobra soliders with nanobites to make them stronger, faster and more durable. When it's revealed that he was Dukes old friend Rex who survived being blown to kingdom come, it was a shocking revelation that gives this iteration to Cobra Commander some depth.

While it's unfortunate some of the actors didn't care for working on this movie, I thought they all put in a solid effort into bringing these characters to the big screen. Channing Tatum really sold the courageous and snarky personality of Duke and his friendship with Ripcord feels very real and genuine. Speaking off, Marlon Waynes is funny and really gets into the military aspect of Ripcord. Dennis Quaid really nailed the authoritative nature of Hawk, Rachel Nicholas made Scarlett sound smart and honest, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaji was very impossing as Heavy Duty, Said Taghmaoui was funny and smart as Breaker and Ray Park was simply magnificent as Snake Eyes. On to the Cobra actors, Christopher Eccleston really sold the sleazy arms dealer that Destro is. Sienna Miller played the part of the Baroness really well, not only selling her sinister and deadly appearance, but also her tragedy in the flashbacks. Bryung-Hun Lee really sold the fierce nature of Storm Shadow, making him look like he could kill anyone with his looks alone. Arnold Vosloo was just having as much fun as he could with the screen time he was given as Zartan, yet he still made a lasting impression. Last but not least we has Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander. I didn't recognize him under that amazing make up, but that just shows how amazing he was as this iconic villain. Every scene he's in he has such fun and chews the scenery like it's a full course meal. He also really sells the relationship he once had with Duke and takes great pleasure in utilizing nano technology.

Visually, the film looks really good in all departments from the sets to the costumes and even the CGI. I like how the Joes have more lighter gray military suits to contrast with Cobra's all black attire. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are of course the exceptions as they look liked they leaped from the cartoon into the film. I though the CGI was also very well rendered and brought the sleekness of the ships and accelerator suits to life. The CGI is especially will done when it comes to showcasing the nanobites and how they destroy everything they touch. I once again cannot praise Cobra Commander's make up enough as he looks so burned and that oxygen mask with the monocle really sells it.

I do have one criticism with the film though and it's what prevents the film from being better in my opinion. During a flashback that after the Baroness' brother, Rex, was supposedly killed in an explosion, it's revealed that Rex survived and injected her with nanobites which ultimately lead her to joining Cobra. She also is not aware that Rex and Cobra Commander are one and the same. To me these feels a like an unnecessary retcon to make it seem like the Baroness was a victim. To me, I think it would make more sense for the Baroness to join Cobra of her on volition without injecting nanobites into her system. This way Duke (who's kinda without an arc in this film) would have to learn that the woman he fell in love with and wanted to marry is long gone. In my opinion the film could've benefited more from the Baroness staying a villain rather than being somewhat redeemed in the end.

Overall I still very much enjoyed G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. Despite it's unnecessary redemption of the Baroness, I still very much enjoyed the characters, thought the action scenes were intense, the sets and costumes well done and the acting really solid. In my opinion, the G.I. Joe film series was off to a pretty good start in 2009 before abruptly ending with its sequel in 2013 with a reboot that just came out this past Summer to less than stellar results financially. ALSO how do all ur muses wake up in the morning (or other time of day,) do they gotta drink a lot of coffee or is it a lot more relaxed as they watch the sunrise, etc

lucille gets up really early in the morning. like, sometimes even before the sun is up. cursed. anyway, she doesn’t drink coffee but if she needs something caffeinated or just something to warm herself up a little, she usually falls back on tea and occasionally something small for breakfast! she has a pretty quick rhythm in the mornings too, like she’s usually ready to walk out the door by like 8am even if she has nowhere really pressing to be.

also, funnily enough, i kind of envision her as someone who’s fallen into keeping up with the news meticulously. probably on her phone. she’s so modern now!

siobhan tries to sleep in out of spite, because who or what the FUCK is important enough for her to get up early for, but getting up early is actually pretty ingrained into her too. both from the days where she worked for a newspaper and had to be there early every day, and from her accumulated desert lifestyle on denny, where she’s fallen into the habit of trying to get an early start on things before the day gets too hot. she kind of likes it anyway, because the saloon she lives over doesn’t open ‘til sometime in the afternoon, so everything in that part of town is kind of sleepy and slow-moving in the mornings and she just... likes that sense of isolation and not having to put up with people. if she has a spare hour or two in the morning she’ll hang around the bar for a bit. not drinking that early (she’s not THAT irish,) but just kinda watching everything start to get moving.

sara kind of keeps a varying sleep schedule depending on what the legends have been doing because sometimes they are, kinda misaligned with denny time, but she doesn’t sleep very long. usually only 4-5 hours before she gets up. her morning ritual is coffee first things first because she has a NIGHTMAREISH temper without it, and then she usually works out a little either via doing push-ups or something in her room or going out for a run somewhere or occasionally doing something sporty with like, shiro. sara is just, too much of a jock for my roster. anyways then she gets a shower and is out and about for the day! 

the only exception to this usual routine is like, if she’s with nyssa, in which case she’ll let herself move a liiittle slower and be more domestic in the mornings

bramblestar gets up before dawn to help organize clan stuff for the day. hollyleaf, as deputy, would usually be in charge of organizing the patrols, but he likes to be awake while everything’s starting to get moving in case anyone needs his help or input. oftentimes he’ll just grab something from the fresh kill pile and then head off to lead a morning patrol, or to train firepaw for an early session. since he gets up so early, sometimes he DOES take midday naps if he’s not busy, because he’s a cat. they need their sleep...

heather, thank god, FINALLY someone who sleeps in like a reasonable person. she’s earned it because she’s just gone through four years of waking up at the crack of dawn for high school. now that she’s a college student, she can FINALLY stay up all night and sleep in late into the mornings like a proper young adult! she still probably has to wake up like, two hours before her classes at least in order to fit all her primping in (which is what the majority of her waking up process is consumed by), but maybe one day an obnoxious early class will challenge her enough for her to finally submit to the college aesthetic of sweatpants and flipflops. 

it’s probably also weird for her that her schedule doesn’t quite line up with veronica’s or duke’s anymore, unless they’re like, going to the same school with some of the same classes. are they all going to the rifter college? idk, idk what chandler’s life is anymore

madeline is used to the morning rush of not only getting herself ready, but getting her kids ready for school, which... she still hasn’t quite lost on denny? i don’t imagine her work hours require her to get up very early, but she still does and just finds ways to kill time. she’s probably the first one i’ve listed so far who takes the time to cook and eat like, a full healthy breakfast, for one thing, although sometimes she’ll just go to one of the cafes she likes to frequent instead of doing that. she also... is probably one of beacon heights’ notorious morning joggers... save everyone,

trish has a pretty reasonable morning schedule. she doesn’t wake up like, ABSURDLY early, but early enough to see eddie and bev off to school and to get ready for work herself. though actually, her morning routine at home is less extensive than most people would think. she usually just like, showers and does basic touching up, and then goes off to work and just grabs a coffee or something on the way. she’s kind of learned not to bother like... making herself up too much because people at make-up and wardrobe will just re-do everything she does anyway,

dolores doesn’t consistently. sleep? because she doesn’t need to. so if she’s busy or has stuff she wants to do, she’ll just forgo that all together, but if she has a lot of downtime sometimes she will actually sleep for a few hours just because it can be a nice mental refresher, y’know? being awake 24/7 can get emotionally tiring even if it’s not affecting your health. but anyway, on those occasions she never sleeps very late into the day, probably gets up around 8 or 8:30 or so (if not a little earlier; especially if cloud is up she does like watching the sunrise with him... their porch has a pretty view). it’s questionable how much like, primping and touching up she needs to do because somehow dolores canonically wakes every morning up looking perfect, 

out of habit, she likes her fresh air in the mornings, so after that she either takes a walk/does whatever little errands she needs to or checks in at the stables depending on her schedule. 

sophie, being a vampire, wakes up when the sun goes down. sometimes a little earlier because her house (read: weird southern mansion) is probably sunlight-proofed but she can’t actually go out and DO anything until the sun goes down. which granted, isn’t always completely inhibiting. she does spend a... slightly obsessive amount of time grooming and primping before she does much else, and then she has a little routine where she checks in on her gardens or her fuckin’ exotic bird collection or whatever else she’s got going on. and then she probably heads out to her club! (or she will once it’s fully established)

depending on the day (since she’s older and doesn’t have to do it every SINGLE day) she might also need to feed, but it’s usually easier to do that once she’s at work (where it’s easy to pick up people who do that kind of thing voluntarily)

camille typically wakes up in her car in a bar parking lot, struggling to remember where she’s been the night previous,

no i’m kidding (mostly), camille wakes up at whatever time her work warrants her getting up. she’s pretty used to adjusting her schedule regularly for that kind of stuff. sometimes she does actually end up pretty tired because staying out late at bars and stuff IS something she does, but she’s pretty accustomed to it by this point.

she usually just gets ready, grabs something quick for breakfast (if she doesn’t just stop somewhere in the city for it), and always makes a point of listening to music on her way to work. it helps ground her a little.

and sly’s schedule... can vary wildly depending on what he has planned. sometimes if he has a big heist going down in the middle of the night, he’ll sleep in the afternoon. he’s pretty used to just squeezing it in where he needs to, and also getting up and energized pretty quickly! one thing he likes to do is leave himself time to do a bit of city (or wherever he’s hanging out; i’ve been thinking of throwing him at thieves landing on denny) rooftop patrolling to stretch his legs a little bit and get some fresh air.

As You Like It

If Shakespeare hadn’t written the character of Orlando, British playwright John Osborne might have invented the version of him now onstage at the Ahmanson. As played by Dan Stevens, a riveting new actor, Orlando becomes a combination of Elizabethan hero and Osborne’s angry young man of the 1950s, and the roaring aggression he projects in the opening scene gives “As You Like It” a searingly intense edge. Much praise has been heaped on the interpretation of Rosalind supplied by Rebecca Hall (director Peter Hall’s daughter), which implies that Stevens’ Orlando is a subsidiary character caught in her floodlights. Stevens, in fact, more than holds his own, giving the production a welcome balance.

What makes Stevens’ portrayal so affecting, beyond his ability to run the gamut from rage to misty-eyed romanticism, is his knack for transforming familiar speeches so they sound fresh and new. He takes risks with every line and gesture, never becomes actorish and appears to be discovering material rather than simply reciting it.

The show begins with a jolt when Orlando nearly strangles his self-centered brother, Oliver (Freddie Stevenson), for the latter’s neglect and refusal to hand over an inheritance. This leads to a grippingly staged wrestling match engineered by Oliver, pitting Orlando against menacing muscle man Charles (James Crossley, ruggedly powerful) and one who looks forward happily to breaking bones. When Orlando unexpectedly wins the match, he connects with Hall’s smitten Rosalind. Much of this is established without words, and the actors create immediate chemistry.

Hall’s formidable height lifts her out of the ingenue category, and a bright red dress she wears adds to her statuesque glamour. She has the force to confront evil Duke Frederick (James Laurenson) when he orders her to “go or die,” and she’s adept at conveying affection for her best friend and cousin, Celia (Rebecca Callard, diminutive in size but a large presence).

Hall’s speech has a stylized lilt and rhythm suited to Shakespeare, but her register can rise and remain uneasily high. Her nervous line readings often have a hesitant, affected awkwardness; she deliberately plays against the traditionally confident attitude usually taken with her part, but it doesn’t quite work, because Hall’s stature and persona have an inherently dominant quality.

This problem becomes increasingly acute when her Rosalind pretends to be a boy who must sustain a relationship with Orlando, all the while concealing her true feminine identity. She remains so imposingly herself that it’s difficult to believe Orlando wouldn’t see beyond her disguise. We have to remind ourselves that the story isn’t grounded in reality, in order to accept and string along with the deception.

John Gunter’s costumes are a striking blend of period and contemporary, and his atmospheric forest set, with its enormous, looming trees, furnishes a perfect background for the performers to attack their roles.

Director Hall (who created the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960 and became director of the Royal National Theater in 1973) sees to it that the part of Oliver is nuanced and detailed, ensuring that Oliver’s highly improbable transition from malevolent manipulator to Orlando’s loyal, devoted friend is believable.

Stevenson does wonders with a playful moment, in which his arms inadvertently land on Rosalind’s breasts and he realizes her actual gender.

The director is equally successful bringing out James Laurenson’s versatility in two parts — as callous Duke Frederick and as the banished duke who fled to the Forest of Arden after Frederick usurped his kingdom.

Robin Hood-style sequences in the forest with the exiled Duke and his band of jovial followers are entertaining, if lengthy. Composer Mick Sands’ delightful music enlivens these sections and wards off any threat of tedium.

Production’s most farcical figures — lovesick shepherd Silvius (David Birkin), who lusts after Phoebe (Charlotte Parry), and Touchstone (Michael Siberry), a jester involved with goat herder Audrey (Janet Greaves) — have an idiosyncratic, human appeal. Touchstone, the wittiest character in the piece, makes unforgettable noises of disgust when Orlando writes insipid rhymes about Rosalind and plasters them on every tree in sight.

to steal one from you, who are your character's daemons closest to?

matthias kind of keeps to himself, like he’s very.... self-confined and solitary even around the daemons of people lucille is close to. i will say he’s probably more relaxed around baltus and maria’s daemon, and a little more emotive, but he’s just... not really the type to be cuddly or even to want to interact very much? but it says a lot when he’s willing to just curl up and chill near someone, so

ciaran is kind of a dick to most people’s daemons. not just in the “he can be aggressive if provoked” kind of way, but even insofar that he’ll go out of his way to instigate and tease them. the only exception to this i can think of currently on denny is hestia, ed’s daemon, who is so easy-going and patient that ciaran has a hard time messing with her without kind of feeling like an idiot. embarassingly enough, she also kind of mothers him -- and he lets her. he’s also pretty fond of raptor red, who doesn’t have a daemon of her own, so he occasionally just enjoys climbing all over her the way he does siobhan.

caitlin’s daemon, who doesn’t have a name, probably likes the cat gods a lot. i imagine that somehow... correlates, like daemons might be particularly drawn to purely spiritual creatures like that. i honestly haven’t really thought about caitlin’s daemon that much oooor how he would even work, given the killer frost situation, so i can’t be much more specific with this answer SORRY

ophelia is basically the team mom of the legends’ daemons. for all that she can be reserved, even intimidating, in standard interactions, she’s pretty much a softie with her team and lets them climb all over her. it does ruin her image a LITTLE when peregrine fusses over her, but i don’t know what she expects at this point, honestly.

speaking of times when ophelia is way less intimidating, she and artemis are probably insufferable together. you know how like. when you see videos of tame cougars, they pretty much just act like giant housecats, to the point where they purr and do those really squeaky meows? that’s ophelia around artemis. no one else is allowed to know,

she’s probably also a little friendlier with some of the daemons of sara’s other friends like shiro, but its the legends + nyssa’s daemon that she’s Particularly close to

finley, like heather, is a bit cliqueish with his affection. he definitely plays favorites, and right now his favorites are casimir and maverick.  he has a more complicated relationship with heather duke’s daemon (whose name is escaping me rn, goddamnit) but i would list him here too just because.... finley definitely loves him, he just doesn’t always like him, if that makes sense? they’re inevitably bonded by, well, chandler and duke’s bond, but they both have very strong personalities and finley clashes up against duke’s daemon’s tendency to stir the pot a lot.

even outside this au and on denny currently (since the heathers cast are among the few used to seeing their daemons semi-frequently), he... misses nut a lot. it’s weird because even when she was around, he was closer to casimir, which is a bit telling (in general, it’s a bit telling that finley and casimir are obnoxiously inseparable when they’re together) but... he got really used to having nut around and now she just. isn’t. 

madeline’s daemon, the as of now nameless chihuahua, is also probably buddies with casimir (aka casimir gains a Parent), but he’s probably notorious in general for kind of herding the daemons of kids in beacon heights. he will also, true to real chihuahuas, 500% get ready to throw down with anyone who threatens them, even daemons who take like, way bigger forms.

speaking of people who are way bigger than him, he is probably bold enough to try to hang out ON knock out, at some point. or just go for car rides, because you know how much dogs love those

trish’s daemon is actually another one i haven’t thought about much.... rip, but it’s probably safe to say that they had a very close but complicated relationship with jessica’s daemon, and that they’re pretty protective of eddie and bev’s. they would also probably 1v1 pennywise,

levi is a bit weird because in the setting i originally envisioned him in he is very much a pack animal daemon, very like, resilient and confident and inspiring of those traits in others, buuut on denny he would probably spend way more of his time being more distant and intimidating and making sure most people’s (or well, humans’) daemons know to to keep their distance. he’s pretty clear about not considering himself the same as them.

but that being said, in daemon au he and mist would have spent like, a ridiculous amount of time together by this point, and she’s a canine too, so they’ve probably developed a very easy and familiar camaraderie. and he’s very fond of peregrine, though he’s at the point where he’s still a little uncertain of how much he wants to show it, whereas i think dolores is more easily affectionate with laurel.

and of course he’d be much more easily open and expressive with maeve’s daemon and probably find it validating that they even... exist

and sophie’s daemon (?), who i still haven’t decided if they even exist, although i have thought about making them something REALLY extra like a tiger. i had an old headcanon when i played katherine from tvd that when people turn, their daemons often change and become large and more predatory, so i’ve been thinking about applying that here. anyways regardless, they’re probably as flighty as she is so i doubt they’re all that attached to other denny daemons as things stand now, although they’re probably friendly-ish with maria’s.
