forever obsessed with dynamics between vampires, specifically that of a maker and fledgling, as a way to explore abuse. the creation of a vampire itself can so easily be a literalization of the lasting impacts of trauma and also much more simply the ways a perpetrator might shape their victim’s very identity. the extremes of isolation in the way that the new vampire, in most narratives, must cut all ties to their mortal life, or else go through an elaborate charade to maintain the facade of humanity, while forever still being removed from it. and the sheer dependence and vulnerability of being in an entirely new state of being, wholly uncertain of what it entails, and relying on another person to define… everything.

i loved the part preceding 'i lied to you' where slim is introducing sammie to the crowd. it's such a sweet scene 🥺

annie patting/shaking sammie's shoulder and smiling so big and proud and loving. slim hyping him up to the crowd and teaching him how to start a performance by making sure the audience knows who he is. mary making her way to the front of the crowd with that soft smile. stack being just as impressed as he had been every other time he'd heard sammie play that day. even smoke (who we see throughout the film doesn't want sammie to play and get caught up in 'sinful' things like him+stack AND THEIR FATHER) is impressed...although i think that, much like it being the turning point that convinced sammie to leave, the performance was the thing that convinced smoke to talk sammie out of being a travelling/gig musician :(

during the scene where jed (sammie's father) is preaching to sammie to drop the guitar, he says: "my heart, my voice, my soul, belongeth to the Lord."

"my heart" shows pearline (🥺) but "my voice" shows delta slim!!!!!! bc by singing, playing, performing, sammie is doing that for - with - everyone who came before him and everyone who'll come after. sammie really is slim's legacy 😭

okay, but, like, THAT'S how you do a villain story. in the FIRST scene, you watch him shoot a man in cold blood. the show tells you right away "this man is not a good man".

but then it gets you to sympathize - look at how much the world has stepped on him. look at how terrible the whole of gotham is. and even when he kills more people, does more terrible things, you still root for him. because it's fun to watch someone be terrible to terrible people. you root for sofia too, because if anyone deserves revenge its her, but you're rooting for both of them somehow.

and then the show tells you "when he was a boy he killed his brothers". but even still, you want to see what he'll do. the show is called the penguin, you want to see the penguin rise. when he lets his mother's finger almost get cut off, you pity him. he's a sad, broken thing. how could he be anything but bad? but he loves, so there must be something else there.

but then. but THEN

the show always told you: "this is the devil". but you thought, maybe the devil can make hell a little more bearable for some people. the devil is so often nuanced, sympathetic, complex. maybe he's like that.

you're wrong. there's nothing good within him and YOU rooted for him to succeed. you wanted to watch the destruction. and now you have to live with the consequences of thinking, even for a second, that he could be redeemed.

Actually SOBBING over this because you are SO RIGHT. In my little floating timeline canon of dad!leo so far we have Sophia your oldest (or Phia for short), then Donnie, then Lila. I think the last drabble I wrote about dad Leo was where you actually did find out you’re preggers with twins so this is SO on brand. 

However!! Let’s say you have your twins first. 

You and Leo might not even be married at this point, but your babies are SO excited to be with their mommy and daddy that they are not waiting any longer to show up lol. So when you find out you’re pregnant, you’re both OVER THE FUCKING MOON. Leo can’t get over how cute you look like this (Leo thirsting over his pregnant wife anon I see you and I'm coming for your ask too bitch <3) but what he really can’t get over is how cute your bump is. You’re both a little surprised at fast you start showing, and more surprised by how big your bump is getting. You look nearly a month ahead of how far along you are, but Leo just thinks it’s so fucking adorable and gorgeous that he’s totally obsessed. 

And when you find out it’s TWINS????? Yes. You know how some parents freak out or panic when they find out they’re having multiples? Not Leo. Nope. Leo spots it a second before the doctor does, then looks to him for confirmation. You’re totally shocked, not in a bad way, it’s just… a surprise. Even if multiples run in your family and you had a hunch this might happen, it’s just so wild to hear it out loud, to have it confirmed, to see the two little pixelated blobs that are going to turn into your babies. Your babies. Leo starts shaking a little then excuses himself for a moment. He returns a couple minutes later smelling like that fireproofing spray you drown all your flammables with has been activated, and you chuckle. Your suspicions are confirmed once you leave and he’s walking you back to your car with even more care and attention than usual, and you see the scorch marks all over the brick and concrete of the parking garage. Thank GOD it’s fireproof. You get a little misty eyed that Leo is SO STOAKED that you’re having not one but two babies right off the bat that he actually had to find a non flammable space to process that information. 

I could go on a lot about your first pregnancy being the twins, but that’s gonna have to turn into its own ask so lmk if you want more first time twin dad Leo during your pregnancy content. 

Also Esperanza is OVER-MOTHERFUCKING-JOYED. You get her t shirts that say stuff like coming soon: Abuela times two! And this grandma got a two for one deal on the CUTEST grandbabies in the world! And all this other cute cheesy shit you find on amazon or temu or whatever. ANYWAY. 

Once your babies are born, a healthy, happy little boy and girl pair aptly named Red and Iris (sidebar Red Valdez and Iris Valdez are SUCH PRETTY BADASS NAMES YOUR KIDS ARE GONNA KICK SO MUCH ASS. Leo might see if he can literally legally make their middle names Danger and Trouble. Maybe it happens maybe it doesn’t. Up to you on that one.) Moving on. 

You and Leo are a dynamic fuckin duo with these babies. You’re so in sync. You’re literally so in sync you could throw cheese puffs in each others mouths from across the room with a 100% success rate. Leo is not only delighted to go above and beyond to help you raise your sweet, creative, curious, adorable, brilliant babies, but he really does surprise you every day at just how good he is with them. Once they reach the cruising and toddling and walking stage, it takes two days before you start to get overwhelmed. But guess what? Leo’s I love my wife senses are tingling, and if he wasn’t working from home already he sure as shooting is now!! He will also delegate and streamline everything in his work and engineering so things are running butter smooth and he has a fuck ton more time to be with you and the babies. 

Leo really feels like he was born for this. He matches their energy perfectly, he sees himself in both your kids. And all the traits he was told were bad or too much or annoying, like his hyperactivity and constant jokes and humor are actually PERFECT for a setting like this. He can juggle two toddlers like it’s nothing, he always has them giggling and laughing, and when the occasional tantrum or meltdown does happen he has them smiling and giggling again within minutes. They’re both literally joined at his hip, always climbing all over him and babbling in a cute toddler version of spanglish and asking a million questions, and for the first time in his life he doesn’t feel anxious or understimulated. He feels… perfect. He finally gets it, all those people who say life made sense when their kids were born. He knows his technical grand divine purpose was to act as a catalyst to prevent the end of the world, but all that stuff from when you were teenagers feels so far away now. He doesn’t need gods or prophecies to tell him what’s so overwhelmingly, abundantly clear. 

Loving you, and loving Red and Iris and being there for all three of you is his reason for existing. They’re the greatest thing he’s ever created, his magnum opus. And he truly could not be more fulfilled.

i really like this scene, just something about rikuo showing hoeru the vote after seeing him feel down about his loss. he didn't have to, but i think he knew it'd mean something even if it would just be one vote. it's a small bit of gratitude and care towards hoeru and he doesn't expect it or let himself hope for it but he likes it, he likes knowing that someone cares even for a moment.

mxtx characters who, in my humble butch opinion, should be butch

Luo Binghe: listen. look me in the eyes. in a genderswap situation, Binghe should get to be butch. one of the key themes in SVSSS is gender, and one of the things that distinguishes SVSSS!Binghe from PIDW!Binghe is that he's not the hypermasculine protagonist and instead is allowed to enjoy more feminine things (like being Shizun's housewife). that's why he's specifically called Bing-mei and it's also why im on my transfemme Binghe soapbox all the time, but that's a whole other topic. what im saying is if we're reversing the gender situation, then fem!Binghe in SVSSS should get to enjoy more masculine things. it's what she deserves. she strikes me as the kind of butch that gets a thrill out of doing gentlemanly things like giving SQQ her coat when she's cold. she should be the Bing-di to PIDW's Bing-jie

Shang Qinghua: this one is deeply self-indulgent projection but don't fucking worry about that okay. SQH is a very specific flavor of low effort butch nerd. SQH is the cookie monster pajamas to butch pipeline. SQH cuts her own hair with regular scissors for convenience and Shen Yuan is dying to get her to just buy some goddamn clippers. SQH is running off of four red bulls and spite. She inexplicably has game and she's just as confused about this as you are

Xie Lian: imagine this for me. you go to one of those volunteering events where you're cleaning trash out of a creek or something. there is a woman there in cargo pants or maybe overalls, something with a shit ton of pockets. she has not shaved in months, maybe years. her hair is in the messiest bun possible, or maybe tied back under a baseball cap. she is somehow the most beautiful woman you've ever seen. after taking away all the trash and informing everyone how to sort the recycling, she is picked up by another woman who appears to be the definition of high camp. you leave this encounter feeling like you might have been converted to something. perhaps to lesbianism. this is what an encounter with butch Xie Lian is like.

the earnhardts are such a fascinating intergenerational racing family bc its like. dale's dad ralph earnhardt was also a really successful NASCAR racing driver, but he refused to help dale race AND refused to give him any approval and then DIED young at age 45, which EVERYONEEE who knew dale was like yeah that drove him insane. that gave him issues. lifelong ones. so dale went into debt trying to race and make him proud/prove him wrong, and then dale wins a championship in his second year but because hes so focused on racing (because of HIS father...) he himself ends up not having too much of a relationship with his kids. apparently barely saw them for years and left their mom to raise them alone in poverty. (he did this to two women and three kids but one of them got adopted by his stepdad. oop) but anyways. so it looks like. a pattern might be continuing. father’s inflicting poverty on their sons. generational cycles.

but then. the kids house literally burned down! and when they were in a tough spot because of that, he took them in to his big house on lake norman to raise them with no questions. which okay bare minimum but still. notable that he takes em in. and they have a tough relationship bc his son isn’t so much a tough guy. doesn’t quite fit in with what the mold of masculinity should look like to a race car driver from rural north carolina. so it’s tough. and he sends him to MILITARY SCHOOL… which to me is like. an i don’t even know what to do with you move. utterly unequipped

but even more notable: he starts to miss his kids and he brings them home from school. has another baby. and he starts bringing dale jr to races to ‘help’ with the crew. and then helps him start to race on his own. and dale gives him the support that his dad never did for him, and then to boot— its a way that his stunted north carolina working class rural ass can actually RELATE to his son in a way he never could before, and they DO bond through it. again unlike dale sr and his father. and dale sr wins 6 more championships. and finally daytona. and proves his dad wrong. he CAN race. he CAN win. he CAN help his son race. and maybe, FINALLY, he reaches some peace inside himself with his lineage and he soothes some of that wound in his soul.

but then its the twilight of dale sr's career, and dale jr joins NASCAR. and its 2001. and his son is running p2 in the daytona 500, the biggest race of the year. the one it means the most to win. and dale sr is in p3, and knows how much this means, and knows his own career is coming to the end sometime soon.... and hes the guy famous for racing every lap like its his last. doing anything for the win. the master of the bump and run. the intimidator. and literally as his last act on the earth, he IGNORES that same desire to win a race that has defined so much of him as a competitor and has been created in response to the approval his dad never gave him, and he defends his son's p2 for lap after lap from the cars behind. and then on the last lap, one corner from watching his son podium, he dies. and his son climbs out of the car after finishing p2 in the daytona 500 because of his father. and just has to deal with all of that.

and idk part of what is so fascinating to me about this family is that its two generations of people who SHOULDVE been nepo babies (and in many ways were), but who also lived in periods of poverty because their father's failings. and ralph earnhardt died before he could see his son prove him wrong, but dale earnhardt, despite also doing so much harm to his son and not understanding him for a lot of his childhood, managed to eventually carve through the daddy issues and the history and his own reputation and the particular brand of southern working class repression that can FUCK people up, figured out how to tell his son he loved him the only way he knew how: through racing, and he died trying to give his son a better chance at success. and i think there is a very interesting aspect of tragedy to that
