The Integration of EHR Systems with Other Health Tech is a Game-Changer in Healthcare
Electronic health records  are a repository of medical information about patients stored in digital format. It contains data like demographics, immunizations, allergies, previous treatments, history of medication, test results, radiology reports, progress notes, history of substance abuse (if any), and so forth. It paints a thorough picture of a patient’s health situation and enables doctors to make informed decisions.
One of the best advantages of using EHR systems medical software is its ability to integrate with other medical technologies. As a result, small clinics, ambulatory care centers, as well as large hospitals can experience faster workflows that are more efficient and also need lesser overhead. Let’s look at some of the ways that the integration of EHR software development with other health technologies can help -
Data Analytics
It is one of the most promising healthcare technologies that has the potential to help doctors predict who is at greater risk. By combining an EMR systems (electronic medical records) with a healthcare data analytics module, physicians can gain the insights derived from assessing historic and current medical and demographic data of patients to identify who might be at greater risk of certain diseases.
This is especially helpful for people with chronic conditions. Analyzing their medical histories and current vitals sheds light on their health situation and helps to predict who would respond well to treatment. By knowing beforehand whose health might turn out in what way, doctors will be empowered to stage early interventions for preventing the progression of the disease. In other words, integrating data analytics solutions with EHR and EMR systems is bound to improve the clinical outcomes for patients.
E-Prescriptions
Pharmacists often deal with a large number of patients picking up their prescriptions each day. An electronic prescriptions software enables doctors to write prescriptions for each patient and send it across to pharmacies directly. It avoids the trouble of pen and paper-based prescriptions, which also carry the problem of illegible handwriting. By integrating EMR software solutions with e-prescriptions, doctors can view the patient’s history before prescribing any medication, with a few clicks on a screen.
This enables doctors to ascertain if a patient might suffer from side effects or allergic reactions to any pills. If a physician does find out that a patient might be allergic to a certain medication, he or she can change it without affecting the patient’s health.
Telemedicine
Telemedicine is one of the hottest topics in healthcare technology. It enables providers to offer care and relevant services remotely through the internet and telecommunication channels. A telemedicine application merged with EMR software development systems enables doctors to access a patient’s medical history during a session of virtual consultation. This allows the doctor to know more about the patient’s health during the session and be more effective. It goes without saying that a telemedicine app that can retrieve patient history with a few clicks has to be an integral part of remote care in general.
EMR software systems integrated with telemedicine solutions are a boon for patients who can’t travel to see their provider in person. These factors make EHR integration a triumph of medical technology.

How can you Update Your National Provider Identifier (NPI) Information?
Remember during medical school when you first got your National Provider Identifier (NPI) number?
If it’s been a while since your application, or you just finished residency, it may be a good time to review and update your record.
After all, everyone changes practice locations, addresses, phone numbers, or other contact information once in a while, so unless that NPI information has stayed the same over the years, Visit the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website to log into your account, where you can:
Submit a change of address
Update contact information, such as phone and fax numbers
Make sure your medical license number matches the information in your state database
If you prefer, you can submit this form by mail to update your NPI information. But a visit to the NPPES website is also a good way to keep up with the latest news about the NPI database, see the improvements in NPPES version 3.0, and learn about important security features like multi-factor authentication.
Why Are NPIs Important?
All healthcare providers who are HIPAA-covered entities, whether individuals or organizations, must have an NPI.
In 1996, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Administrative Standard mandated the adoption of a “standard unique health identifier” for providers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of electronically transmitting health information.
But it wasn’t until 2004 that the Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule to establish an NPI for providers. An in-depth historical perspective in Bulletin Healthcare says that while the concept of a 10-digit numerical identifier sounds simple, it “has saved hundreds of millions of dollars since CMS began issuing them in 2006.”
HIPAA-covered entities started using the NPI database in  2011 for all electronic transmission of standard transactions and efficient coordination of benefit transactions. Today, NPIs are crucial in ways that probably couldn’t have been imagined when they were being developed in the early 1990s.
Using Your NPI
To start e-prescribing via iPrescribe, you will need an NPI account to set up your profile as part of the identity verification process and to upgrade your account for e-prescribing for controlled substances (EPCS).
Once your NPI account is updated, it’s easier to complete identity verification for iPrescribe (and other apps). Knowing how to update npi information and navigate the NPPES NPI Registry gives physicians and other healthcare providers with prescribing capabilities the ability to monitor malicious use of their credentials.
Now that you’ve got your NPI profile in order, it’s time to ditch the paper prescriptions pad and switch to the secure features available in a mobile e-prescribing application.

Tumblr media
Electronic Health Record Software
Electronic Health Records (EHR) is the essential healthcare software used in clinics and hospitals. EHRs reduce the need for paper medical records as it stores complete patient data. The information includes medical and family history, prescribed medications history, and laboratory and other test results. EHRs offer a convenient, quick, and cost-efficient way of storing data and avoiding the risks of data replication or loss.
E-Prescription Software
E-prescription software lets physicians write prescriptions, track prescription history, and renew or cancel any medication. Physicians and patients can directly send the prescription to a pharmacy of their choice and thus save time. Tracking previous records and prescriptions enables doctors to check for already taken medications and suggest changes quickly.
Telemedicine software
Telemedicine software enables patients to get remote or virtual care consultations from physicians. The need for telemedicine software solutions boomed after the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Patients can get required care consultations virtually without regular face-to-face appointments.
The software offers in-app video conferencing, in-app messaging, file transfer (for patient test results), and in-app payments.
Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM)
Remote patient monitoring (RPM) software solutions enable patient data collection outside healthcare institutions (clinics or hospitals). For example, heart rate and blood pressure monitors, glucose and blood oxygen meters, wearable ECG monitors, etc. Similar to telemedicine software, RPMs gained momentum during the pandemic.
Hospital Management Systems (HMS)
Hospital management software has two panels- one for hospital administrators, including doctors and authorized healthcare professionals, and the other for patients.
The management panel enables hospital administrators to manage entire hospital operations seamlessly. It covers food and medicine management, room booking and scheduling, doctors’ timetables, and scheduled appointments.
On the other hand, the patients portal allows them to book and schedule appointments with a patient registration form. Also, it covers all admittance information, billing information, insurance, procedures, doctor appointments, and all meds and prescriptions information.
Thus, Hospital management systems improve hospitals’ productivity, streamline routines, and improve patients’ experience.
Healthcare CRM
Healthcare CRM software helps hospitals maintain good relationships with clients as it automates many tasks, including registration for services and personalization based on provided data.
Medical billing software
Medical Billing software enables healthcare organizations to create and manage patient invoices, receipts, insurance claims, and other financial transactions. Healthcare organizations can integrate this software separately if their Hospital Management Systems do not offer this feature.
Remote medical training
Technology is benefiting physicians, care providers, and patients alike. Remote Medical training software solutions enable medical students and physicians to get virtual medical training. The software integrates technologies like Virtual or Augmented Reality to help students interact more directly with the subject material.
Medical imaging
Medical imaging technology enables the extraction of accurate data and information from images. AI and ML technology makes data extraction quick.

What Type of Buyer Are You?
Most organizations we speak with are researching and evaluating medical software for one or more of the following reasons:
Transitioning from paper charts to digital records. “It’s raining paper” is the common cry we hear from paper-based practices. These buyers want to cut back on paper, improve office efficiency, reduce errors and run a more effective operation overall.
Replacing outdated software. This is a common scenario we hear from buyers. Their current system—whether it be a homegrown system or from a medical software vendor—is out of date and costly to maintain or update. They want a more modern system that is easier to use, meets federal requirements (e.g., ONC-ATCB certification) or that meets feature/functional needs.
Combining applications into an integrated suite. In many cases these practices have a hodgepodge of disparate applications, and as a result, find themselves doing double data entry and dealing with other inefficient workflows and processes. These organizations invest in integrated medical office management software—that is, integrated EMR, billing and scheduling applications—to centralize all information and functions in one place.
Implementing best-of-breed applications. Conversely, these buyers are focused on applications to address a specific need. Most often, buyers in this category are looking for a stand-alone billing, EMR, RIS or PACS system.
Pursuing federal incentives. Thanks to the HITECH Act of 2009, physicians have been replacing their EHRs or purchasing new ones for the first time to meet federal requirements. In order to qualify for Medicare and Medicaid incentives, physicians—or more accurately, “eligible professionals”—must make “meaningful use” of a certified EHR. The law offered incentives for physicians who complied before 2015, but physicians who still aren’t meeting “meaningful use” standards today face penalties in the form of decreased reimbursements.
We should note that outpatient and inpatient organizations often have different feature/functional requirements. For example, inpatient care provider centers such as hospitals will require systems to support bed management, UB-04 billing and potentially long-term patient stays. Meanwhile, ambulatory care providers such as primary care physicians and specialists will share common feature requirements to support “walk-in/walk-out” care.
Practices looking to integrate business intelligence tools into their existing medical solutions might be interested in healthcare BI software.
Benefits of Medical Software
The general benefits of any medical system are improved quality of patient care, increased operational efficiency and improved practice profitability. These benefits are created by different applications and impact organizations in different ways.
For example:
The automation of back-office operations streamlines administrative tasks associated with patient encounters, which may enable providers to spend more time with patients and hire fewer staff.
More accurate documentation of these encounters and a more organized claims submission process can lead to improved collections.
Automated alerts prompt providers with potential issues or risks, while automated reminders help patients return to the office when necessary, improving quality of care.
In addition to these general benefits, the major applications found in medical software each provide a host of specific benefits. For example, in 2014 we surveyed physicians about the benefits of electronic health records. They cited “easy access to records,” “more robust/legible records” and “drug interaction alerts” as the top advantages of using an EHR.
Important Considerations
Integrated suite vs. best-of-breed. When selecting a system, buyers will have the choice of implementing different applications for specific tasks, or a complete suite of tools to address all their needs. The key decision that most providers will need to make is whether to implement a standalone electronic medical records (EMR) system or replace an existing practice management system with a complete system. We hear from many buyers facing this decision as practice management systems have been ubiquitous since the 1990s and EMRs are increasing in adoption, primarily due to the HITECH Act.
Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The trend toward cloud computing is impacting many industries, and healthcare is certainly one of them. Web-based, or SaaS, software offers several advantages such as lower upfront costs, reduced IT and support costs, remote accessibility and more. However, practices in rural settings may not have access to the broadband Internet necessary to efficiently run Web-based software. Moreover, Web-based systems may not support all the feature/functional needs of some practices with unique requirements.
Mobile EHR Software. Going hand-in-hand with SaaS, healthcare providers are finding themselves increasingly on the go and accessing systems from multiple offices, home and mobile devices. Tablet (e.g., iPad) and smartphone support, including iPhones and Android phones, is increasingly common. If you will be accessing your software primarily from a mobile device, we suggest choosing a vendor that has developed a native app for your device, such as MediTouch’s iPad EMR.
ONC-ATCB certification. As most healthcare professionals are aware, the HITECH Act of 2009 requires the use of electronic medical records systems by 2015. Eligible professionals can subsequently qualify for up to $44,000 through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program or up to $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program. To qualify, they will need to demonstrate “meaningful use” of one of the ONC-ATCB certified EMRs.
Recent Events You Should Know About

Let’s look at some of the ways that the integration of EHR software with other health technologies can help -
Data Analytics
A telemedicine application merged with EMR software systems enables doctors to access a patient’s medical history during a session of virtual consultation. This allows the doctor to know more about the patient’s health during the session and be more effective. It goes without saying that a telemedicine app that can retrieve patient history with a few clicks has to be an integral part of remote care in general.
EMR software systems integrated with telemedicine solutions are a boon for patients who can’t travel to see their providers in person. These factors make EHR integration a triumph of medical technology.

1 h o u r c o m m u t e
I FINALLY started working this week at UCSF after waiting for 2 months twiddling my thumbs (well ok I had another job in the meantime being an online moderator for a mental health app)! Even though the commute sucks and I’m so exhausted, I actually really enjoy the experience so far. The physician I’m working with is brilliant and kind towards her patients, I can definitely tell that her patients both respect and admire her. While I am enjoying the fact that I’m helping out this physician so much and gaining clinical experience in the women’s health/primary care setting, the amount of chronic diseases I’ve seen just in this past week is alarming and frightening. Most, if not all, of the patients I’ve seen have AT LEAST one chronic disease: coronary artery disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, breast cancer, osteoporosis, etc. etc. The list goes on and on. Many of these diseases are due to poor diet and exercise and it concerns me that I’ve had such a bad lifestyle throughout my life—I’m basically looking at my future self in these patients if I continue on with my unhealthy habits. This one patient pulled out a gallon-sized bag filled with at least 5-6 pill bottles and had ANOTHER ONE prescribed today. It broke my heart when she told the physician, “I don’t want to take any more pills, doctor.”
I want to become a doctor to prevent and treat these chronic illnesses. I should also start off with a healthy, balanced diet with regular exercise each week so I can live a long, healthy life with a sound mind and body... to be continued.
