Newcastle West, NSW
Newcastle West is a beautiful place in New South Wales that attract more and more immigrants each year. But before you pack your things, make sure that you understand the cost of living in the area. This will help you determine whether your income will be able to keep up with your monthly expenses. Generally, a family of four needs around $250,000 without rent to live a comfortable life while a single person would need $73,000 without rent. Groceries are 3% lower than the Australian average but meals in restaurants are 9% higher. While living in Newcastle may not be as expensive as living in Melbourne and Sydney, it is also important to know that it is not very cheap as well. Therefore, plan your finances ahead to ensure that at the end of each month, you still have sufficient savings to keep.
Nobby Beach
The Nobby Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Newcastle. This is a common venue for swimming and water sports activities. The fine sand, the nice waves, and the stunning view of the Harbour make it a great place to walk or play on the beach. Since this is a beautiful escape to the usual hustle and bustle of the city, Nobby Beach is also dubbed as the Surfer’s Paradise. Some guests also stroll up the lighthouse to see the amazing sceneries. There are also restaurants along the seashore where you can dine and enjoy a few drinks while enjoying the relaxing vibe. The 400 meters of white sand is also open for dogs which means that you can bring your pet with you as you stroll around the area.
Alleged Pitch Invader on “Holiday” from Soccer Games
Alex Agelopoulos, 23 years old, is the alleged soccer hooligan accused as the pitch invader in Melbourne. According to reports, Agelopoulos is facing several charges that include unlawful assault, disrupting a match, and public nuisance behavior. The incident led to more than 150 people storming the field and caused injuries to several attendees including two security guards, a referee and goalkeeper Tom Glover. Agelopoulos has been released on bail but is banned from attending all soccer games in the future. While he was not required to enter his plea on the cases filed against him, he will definitely tell his version of the story on February 27 when he is required to return to court.

Incredible Benefits of Psychotherapy in Sydney
Several times it is seen that a person is battling with a mental issue but cannot explain to others what they are going through. Psychotherapy which is also known as Psychological Therapy is an effective treatment to defeat mental problems that have accrue over time. It is also known as talk therapy. Research has shown that these mental health conditions can be treated well with the help of this therapy.
One of the most prominent gains that can be gained by this therapy is that patients get an ability to comprehend their feelings of nervousness and learn how to transform awful feelings into a positive and productive lookout.
Usually, such sessions with a psychologist are 50 minutes long and arranged once a week. Psychotherapy treatment doesn’t just include talking, other types of communication to inspect the chief cause of an emotional issue that can comprise expression via music, painting, writing and/or acting.
Tumblr media
The fact that psychotherapy is a treatment that causes only minor side effects because of lack of chemically altering medications used, makes this approach of treatment more effective.
Generally, people want treatment that doesn’t include any side effects so this treatment is for them. In addition to this, reducing psychological diseases that can make a person’s life miserable and restrict their ability, some other perks and positive merits of group supervision psychology are highlighted below:
1. Strengthening relationship skills.
2. Comprehending and accomplishing personal goals.
3. Defeat illnesses such as depression, compulsive behaviours, and eating disorders.
4. Lifts one’s self-confidence.

What type of movies do you get into the easiest? anything with a good intro tbh. i like all kinds of movies.
If you could learn to play any instrument, what would you pick? guitar or piano.
What is it about a stranger that makes you interested in them? just standard conversation, if we click i’m interested in learning more about them.
Are you materialistic? in some ways. i don’t own designer clothes or bags but i tend to spend a lot on technology, makeup and perfume. oh and shoes.
Do you think more with your heart, your mind or your body? heart i think.

What are your opinions on bullying? i think it’s terrible. i don’t know why people intentionally do it.
If you were a writer, what type of stuff would you most likely write? probably tips and tricks and personal experiences.
Do you have any mental disorders or diseases? not that i know of.
How do you feel upon seeing someone who’s missing an appendage? i briefly think about how it happened but i don’t judge them for it or stare.

Can you handle the stress of working in food/customer service? been there, done that. definitely not for me. i always feel for people when i see an entitled customer treating workers with disrespect.
Are you ever rude to people on purpose? i’ve only ever done this to people who are rude to me first.
Can you feel the rush of energy a band brings when playing live? of course! who doesn’t? even if i don’t know the band or don’t regularly listen to them, live music is all about the energy.
How do you feel when you’re around a lot of people you don’t know? awkward. when i was younger i’d socialise and make an effort but as i get older the more socially lazy i get.

Would you rather die or eat another human being? i don’t know... it depends how desperate i am. i can’t really imagine eating another human being, that’d scar me for life.
Do you think people who say that they ‘don’t have regrets’ are telling a lie? it’s not really a lie. it’s good to live that way but also learn from your past mistakes rather than just ignoring they ever happened in the first place.

The 1st Photo was 4 years ago on Christmas Day , Number 2 & 3 were 3 years ago... and number 2 was 2 years and 5 months ago .... when I was fighting for my life Literally!!! And the last one is me now !!! Just because I have worked really hard & my weight is good now ... doesn’t mean that I DONT struggle Everyday!!! Because I do . #anorexianervosa for me has been a life long battle!!! In the photo when I was in the pink robe ... at my very worst Nearly 27 years ago .... I was 15 kilograms less !!! Everyday is a struggle... Every meal and snack is a battle in my head with #anorexia telling me ... screaming at me !!! I could go back to that critically ill girl in the pink robe at ANY time . That is the thing with #eatingdisorders . They are SO Unpredictable and you can go down hill at any time and relapse!!! It takes a lot of work , and strength too keep on Living !!! Fight .... Fight for your life !!! Because even though our #eatingdisorders tell us lies and try too kill us ... we only get 1 life . It really takes a Village to take care of someone with an Eating Disorder!! Psychiatrists , Psychologists, Dieticians , Nurses , FAMILY and Friends . That is why I think it’s imperative that we ALL look after each other!!! We may not be able to cure or save someone. You mentioned seeing a good psychologist in a previous answer to someone. Can you recommend anyone in Sydney?
I think recommending psychologists isn’t a particularly good idea as 1. certain psychologists specialise in certain areas so it’s important to find one that focuses on what you need support for (e.g. anxiety, depression, eating disorder, PTSD etc) & 2. within that, it’s also important to find a psychologist that you feel comfortable with, like & just vibe with; just because one psychologist has worked for many people, doesn’t mean they’re going to work for you, so find someone, trial them & then go from there! Much love & all the best xxx

Meet the first Aussie woman to run 800m in under two minutes in a decade
Posted June 01, 2019 05:09:10
Tumblr media
Photo: Bisset says she's learned to love her body through running. (ABC News: Ben Lisson) Catriona Bisset recently broke through the two-minute barrier in the 800-metre run, and is now breaking her silence about a battle with mental illness that nearly derailed her promising athletics career. Once a junior running star, Bisset gave up competition for years as she suffered through an eating disorder, anxiety and depression in her late teens and early 20s. Now, as the first Australian woman in a decade to break the two-minute barrier in the 800m event, Bisset is bound for the World Championships in Doha. "I feel like I'm a completely different person, I don't think I would recognise myself," she laughs.
Tumblr media
Photo: With steady improvement Bisset was able to transition back into elite-level running. (Supplied: Athletics Australia) While her improvement has appeared sudden, the 25-year-old's success has been hard-earned on and off the track. She qualified for her first national titles when she was just 12, but soon her mental health took a toll on her ability to train and compete. In her late teens, it took her away from competitive running. "That's when I started my mental health journey," she explains. "Those sorts of experiences, they affect every part of your life and they can make a lot of things more difficult." Getting help Bisset continued running recreationally during her four years away from competitive sport, but it was far from her main concern. If you or anyone you know needs help: "I started really getting some help on that and starting that process and figuring out what was going on with me." She sought assistance from friends and psychologists and moved from Sydney to Melbourne for a fresh outlook. "[It was about] making sure I could do those little things and then each of those built on themselves, and you get to a point where you can do more "You then get to a point where you can look back and you can see this huge improvement." That gradual and careful improvement paved the way for a return to elite-level running. External Link:Bisset easily won this year's 800m final at the Australian Athletics Championships. It's been an unexpected blessing, alleviating some of her personal demons through her return to physical exercise and the associated routine. "A lot of it is about just this relationship with my body and how it's really let me learn to love myself and my body through the sport. "[It's about] learning how to ask for help and getting really good at it and being able to collect people around me that can help me." One of those people is her coach, Peter Fortune, who trained Cathy Freeman to gold at the Sydney Olympics.
Tumblr media
Photo: Bisset celebrates with her teammates in the 800m relay. (Supplied: Athletics Australia) Turning personal battles into strengths He believes Bisset's honesty about her mental health journey has defined her improvement. "I think the more she's running and the better she's running, I think the better [she feels]. I'm really happy she embraces that and talks about it. "I think she will be excellent [for] a lot of young athletes that maybe haven't had that type of role model." For Bisset, 2019 has been a breakthrough season in more ways than one. She not only claimed the national title in Sydney last month, but also cracked the two-minute barrier a week later. She's certain her second lap around the track, figuratively speaking, has been a success because of her time away from competition. "I think it's one of the points of difference of me as an athlete, having had that time to really understand myself." With the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in her sights, she hopes to inspire any young athletes to seek help when they need it. "If I can share some part of my journey and do my part in normalising these experiences, and destigmatising mental health challenges then that's something that's really important to me." Self-talk with Johanna Lyon
Self-talk is probably one of the most intimate and important things we can master for our own good. The way we talk to ourselves links to the way we see ourselves, and the way we interact with the world. It’s an aspect of our communication skills that we never get enough time on in school. This week I talk to the marvellous Johanna Lyon about self-talk, within a special context. In this bumper special, you get to listen to the first ever recording of Stumble Through. A recording I held back on releasing because of my own self-talk around it. I am really excited to show it to you, and of course to introduce Jo (that will be funny after you’ve listened).
Jo is a young artist passionate about laughing with others. Jo is most interested in discussing and unpacking why humans do what we do in areas of life regarding love, childhood and discrimination, among other things. She aims to achieve connection between strangers within her work. She is a truly marvellous human being that I am so lucky to call my friend. I am really glad I get to share this, and her, with you this week. Don’t forget to get tickets to her Short and Sweet show this weekend! They’re pretty cheap, and it’s an excellent excuse to take a trip to the Gold Coast.
Keep well,
-Paula
EPISODE NOTES:
Things We Mentioned
.....
Here are those definitions again, courtesy of Merriam-Webster
Self-talk
talk or thoughts directed at oneself
Self-esteem
a confidence and satisfaction in oneself: SELF-RESPECT
Synonyms: ego, pride, pridefulness, self-regard, self-respect
Self confidence
confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities
Synonyms: aplomb, assurance, confidence, self-assurance, self-assuredness, self-esteem, self-trust
Self-worth

Self-efficacy (this one came from the Cambridge Dictionary)
a person's belief that they can be successful when carrying out a particular task: Perceived self-efficacy refers to people's beliefs about their capabilities to exercise control over their own activities.
.....
Immersion therapy, also known as exposure therapy, is cognitive behavioural therapy technique usually used to treat anxiety disorders. The American Psychology association defines it as “Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment that was developed to help people confront their fears… a psychologist might recommend a program of exposure therapy in order to help break the pattern of avoidance and fear. In this form of therapy, psychologists create a safe environment in which to “expose” individuals to the things they fear and avoid. The exposure to the feared objects, activities or situations in a safe environment helps reduce fear and decrease avoidance.“
Read more about it here: https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families/exposure-therapy
And recently, immersion therapy has taken on a new meaning. Immersion therapy is now also a technique in which people with some disabilities (mostly movement related) and injury can gain access to movement by being immersed in water. Read all about it here:

.....
Self-perception theory So I got this one totally wrong. I said it was this thing where people believed that they were good by default, nuh uh. Self-perception theory was developed by Dr Daryl Bem, and “describes the process in which people, lacking initial attitudes or emotional responses, develop them by observing their own behavior and coming to conclusions as to what attitudes must have driven that behavior.” For more info, have a little read of this quick summary here: https://www.learning-theories.com/self-perception-theory-bem.html
I don’t know what I was thinking of, but let me know if you do!

Check out her amazing start up Spark Girlz which is a Toowoomba based company getting girls involved and excited about STEM. Learn more about them here: https://sparkgirlz.com/about-spark-girlz/

How to Add More Joy to Your Days
It’s safe to say that most of us would love more joy in our lives, particularly when it feels like the hours blend together into one big blur, and we find ourselves feeling blah.
Yet, do you know what brings you joy?
Sometimes, we can get so swept up in the daily hustle that we forget to ask ourselves this question—and we have no idea about the answer.
According to therapist Lynn Zakeri, LCSW, “joy is found in different ways by different people.”
She defines joy as “better than feeling good,” and “better than fun.” It’s forgetting about your stress and troubles, and being in the moment, truly enjoying yourself, she said. “Joy is memorable.”
Zakeri finds joy in laughing with loved ones. “The feeling of ‘you get me’ is all I need.”
Some of her clients at her Chicago private practice find joy in overcoming a challenge. For other clients, joy arises out of an experience, such as hiking or having a heart-to-heart with a friend.
For therapist Renee Cage-Watson, LCSW, joy resides in being at peace with who she is and her purpose. “I honor and own my story; therefore, I own my power to create the life I desire,” said Cage-Watson, owner of Empowered by Courage Counseling in San Leandro, Calif., who works with children, adolescents, families, and adults.
Similarly, Laura Trapani, LCSW, a therapist and owner of the Chicago private practice TherapyLink, noted that “joy is a natural feeling of euphoria that we are inherently born with and can cultivate throughout our lives if we stay true to ourselves.”
According to psychologist Jenn Hardy, Ph.D, therapists sometimes think of emotions as family trees. We can think of joy as a family on its own. “Within that family you’ll find bliss, exuberance, and delight. You’ll also find happy contentedness, enjoyment, and the happiness you feel when you find something to be really funny.”
When adding more joy to your life, the key is to pause for a bit, and get curious about your personal version of joy. Below, you’ll find a variety of ideas—but ultimately, of course, it’s up to you.
Care for yourself. For starters, “it’s hard for joy to poke through a thick blanket of exhaustion,” said Hardy, who runs a private practice in Maryville, Tenn. Which is why she stressed the importance of respecting our limits, communicating those limits to others, getting enough sleep, moving our bodies, taking breaks, and extending ourselves some grace.
Create an inventory. Cage-Watson asks her clients to create a list of big or small joyful activities, and do one of those activities every day. For instance, a joyful activity might be taking 5 minutes to make up a poem about your morning. It might be listening to music or a guided meditation. It might be watching a funny film with your spouse. It might be reading about the history of dinosaurs or the history of writing for 30 minutes. It might be waking up 20 minutes before your kids, and eating breakfast in bed.
Cultivate healthy relationships. Clinton Power, a clinical relationship counsellor and founder of Clinton Power + Associates in Sydney, Australia, emphasized the significance of relationships in affecting our mental health.
“When your relationships are poor, you may feel anxiety, depression, and ill-health. And when your relationships are going well—full of love, care, fondness, and trust—you will experience an overall feeling of wellbeing, hence, enhancing your capacity for joy.”
Power suggested spending fun, quality time with loved ones, along with quickly repairing any conflicts that come up.
Help others. “When we help others, we help ourselves,” Cage-Watson said. “Often the more one gives, the greater the feelings of gratification.” Cage-Watson’s clients have done everything from walking a sick neighbor’s dog to joining an anti-bullying advocacy group to participating in outreach work with their church. She used to volunteer at a safe house for women who escaped human trafficking.
If you’d like to volunteer, Cage-Watson recommended using the app VolunteerMatch, which matches you with volunteer opportunities based on your interests.
Jot down a gratitude list. Clinical psychologist Steven M. Yousha, PsyD. LCSW, encouraged readers to focus on what is going right in your life. Specifically, he said, create a list of things, people, places, and opportunities that you can be thankful for. He shared these examples: your home, health insurance, public parks, music, family, travel, a job promotion.
“Once you have that list, look at it several times per day to keep it more in awareness.”
Create joy around stress. “Notice what time of day you feel the most stressed and be mindful of what triggers it,” said Trapani, who specializes in working with individuals and families dealing with anxiety and depression related disorders.
Then add sparks of joy to those moments. For instance, she said, during the morning rush, pause for a few seconds to smile and thank the barista who makes your coffee; or before a tough meeting, send a quick email to a close friend you haven’t talked to in a while.
Connect to nature. If you live in a bustling city, Power suggested going on a day or weekend trip to a natural environment. If that’s not possible, sit on a park bench at lunchtime or take a walk, and note the different natural things you see. Or watch a sunrise or sunset, Cage-Watson said. Or look up at the night sky. As Ralph Waldo Emerson famously wrote, “If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore.”
Set boundaries around joyless habits. “We are a society obsessed with “finding happiness” and, yet, we are not a society that cultivates a lot of time for joy,” Trapani said.
“In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world it is easy to feel like you cannot leave any email unanswered or problem unsolved.” Many of Trapani’s clients are working parents who can’t stop thinking about work when they’re at home—and can’t stop working.
“All too often working parents are trying to get dinner ready, spend time with their kids, and answer work emails and texts all at once.”
Whether you’re a parent or not, setting boundaries around habits that trigger the opposite of joy is vital. For example, Trapani suggests her clients keep their phones in one area of the house—as though each cell phone were “a land line or a desktop computer with dial-up internet.” When her clients do this, they report feeling more present and in control.
Trapani also recommended deleting social media from your phone—another joyless habit for most of us. As she said, “there used to be a day when we could go through a breakup and not ever know what our ex was doing with their weekend, let alone their entire life. Before social media we did not know if we were not invited to an event or party on a Saturday night, because no one was live streaming the event as we sat at home and watched.”
Adding more joy to our days means thinking through what joy specifically looks—and tastes, smells, sounds, and feels—like to you. It also means identifying the habits that stress you out—and seeing how joy might live there, too.
Adding more joy to our days isn’t about chasing happiness. It isn’t about striving to only feel good, and dismissing the real pain that exists in our lives. Rather, it’s about empowering yourself. It’s about staying true to your desires and dreams. It’s about caring for yourself. It’s about creating, accessing, and acknowledging joy’s many forms—delight, contentment, satisfaction—in small, yet meaningful, ways.
Sometimes, this is as simple as pausing and opening our eyes.

Pedestrian Deaths Are at an All-Time High
As little as 150 minutes of walking each week may reduce your risk of all-cause mortality,1 reduce your insulin resistance2 and contribute to a fitness routine, helping improve your balance, metabolism and mood.3 However, while walking is a simple and easy way to integrate fitness into your daily routine, it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings while walking.
For instance, research has demonstrated the number of people dying early from exposure to air pollution, including car exhaust, is more than the number caused by smoking each year.4 Rising rates of pollution contribute to lower life expectancy, attention deficit disorder, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Thus, it is likely not a good idea to be walking outdoors in highly polluted areas.
People check their smartphones 150 times a day, or every six minutes; 46 percent say they couldn’t live without them; and many prefer texting over real-life conversations.5
This behavior may, in part, have contributed to preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) showing pedestrian deaths are at an all-time high, greater than numbers reported in the 1990s, rising 35 percent from 2008 to 2017.6
Pedestrian Deaths at the Highest Level in Decades
In 2018, over 6,200 people died in traffic accidents, the highest number recorded in nearly 30 years. According to these estimates by the GHSA, walking to work or walking the dog at night may be riskier than you previously imagined.
The report from the nonprofit group comes at a time when the number of other traffic deaths are on the decline.7 According to the GHSA, the traffic deaths from all other causes declined by 6 percent in the time from 2008 to 2017.8 In a statement, executive director Jonathan Adkins said:9
"While we have made progress reducing fatalities among many other road users in the past decade, pedestrian deaths have risen 35 percent [since 2008]. The alarm bells continue to sound on this issue; it's clear we need to fortify our collective efforts to protect pedestrians and reverse the trend.”
The GHSA report showed a 4 percent increase in pedestrian deaths over 2017,10 and identified a handful of factors that may have contributed to these increasing numbers,11 as well as the cities where pedestrians may be at greatest risk.12
Factors contributing to the rising number of pedestrian deaths may be found inside and outside the control of state and local traffic safety officials. Some include economic conditions, population growth, weather conditions and fuel prices.
The increasing number of light trucks and SUVs on the road is one factor, as the number of fatalities involving SUVs increased by 50 percent as compared to passenger cars, which increased by 30 percent.13
A larger number of fatalities also occurred at night, and cities experiencing the highest population growth had an overall 5 percent increase in the number of fatalities during the first six months of 2018.
High-risk states included Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho and North Carolina.14 The report also identified distracted drivers and pedestrians due to smartphone use as a possible contributing factor.15
The Good News
Despite the overall rise in pedestrian deaths, the GHSA did find some good news in the data. During the first half of 2018 there was a decline in pedestrian fatalities in 23 states as compared to the same period in 2017. Additionally, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada and Oklahoma posted double-digit declines in the number and percent of change during this same time period.16
The number of fatalities in the 10 largest cities declined by 15 percent, and was especially evident in New York City, demonstrating local success across each state may not be reflected in the statewide data reported. The researchers suggested enhancing safety is in the best interest of everyone as the rising number of fatalities makes it clear the issue must be a continued priority.17
While infrastructure improvements are necessary, the researchers also suggested implementing educational campaigns and law enforcement countermeasures. In the appendix, the report shared the strategies each state is using to address pedestrian safety. Although not a full representation of activities, it is a good indication of the types of changes occurring in your state.18
Smartphones Are Distracting and Addicting
The data demonstrated the largest category of roads where pedestrian fatalities occurred in 2017 was local streets.19 Those occurring on interstates often involved motorists who were struck standing outside of their cars due to mechanical issues or minor car crashes.
On local streets, people were more apt to be walking distracted. You've likely seen it many times — individuals walking along the street with their face buried in their smartphone. Riding bicycles, driving cars, on commuter trains and even eating dinner with their families, many are busy scrolling through their phones, paying little attention to their surroundings.
As technology has become more accessible, few are willing to live without it. Many jobs have also changed drastically with the leap from typewriters to computers. Today, more connect to the internet using their smartphone at home than they do on a computer.20
Of the 95 percent of Americans who own a cellphone, 77 percent use a smartphone.21 Some conditions may trigger internet addiction or compulsions, including anxiety, depression, social isolation, stress and other addictions.22 Much like drugs and alcohol, internet activity stimulates your brain's reward system and provides a constant source of information and entertainment.
The physical and mental effects of addiction, coupled with the physical effects of withdrawal, may increase your risks for long-term health conditions. In a recent study involving 144 people between the ages of 18 and 33, researchers discovered both heart rate and blood pressure are affected in those who report spending extended periods of time online.23
Placebo Action May Give You the Illusion of Control
Using a protected crosswalk may reduce your risk of a pedestrian fatality. However, some crosswalks have placebo buttons installed, which appear mechanically sound but have no functionality. In much the same way medicine uses placebo pills, these buttons give pedestrians the illusion of control. In a telephone interview with CNN, Harvard psychologist Ellen Langer, Ph.D., commented:24
"They do have a psychological effect. Taking some action leads people to feel a sense of control over a situation, and that feels good, rather than just being a passive bystander. Doing something typically feels better than doing nothing."
In 2004, The New York Times25 revealed the majority of the buttons in New York didn't work, although 750 were still operational. Today, a spokesperson from New York City’s Department of Transportation reported to CNN only 100 of the 1,000 crosswalk buttons are actually functional.26
This shift may have been triggered by increasing traffic. Today more advanced systems are used to determine when the traffic lights change. However, the buttons are often kept rather than incurring further expense to remove them. In some cities the buttons respond only at a certain time of the day.
In London, where over 6,000 traffic signals are present, there are crossings where the green light comes on automatically, but features such as tactile paving and audible traffic signals are used to help those who are visually impaired and are only activated when the crossing light button is pushed.27
Physical and Mental Benefits of Walking
According to the World Health Organization, inactivity is one of the leading causes of death in adults around the world.28 Walking daily may go a long way toward reducing this risk. Walking produces many beneficial biochemical changes in your body, such as raising your heart rate, increasing calorie burn and increasing the amount of nitric oxide released into your bloodstream.
Walking may also boost your memory and improve your creative problem-solving. One Stanford University study29 found walking increased creative output by an average of 60 percent as compared to sitting still. Several studies have confirmed the effect on health and longevity, including the following:
Walking four times a week for 15 minutes was found to improve overall survival in comparison to those walking less, with the elderly experiencing a 40 percent reduction in risk of mortality.30
In a study of 707 nonsmoking retired men, the mortality rate in those who walked less than 1 mile each day was nearly twice that of those who walked more than 2 miles.31
Participants who walked more than one hour a day had a longer life expectancy than those who walked less. The researchers felt the increased longevity resulted from a healthier lifestyle and decreased the participants’ lifetime medical expenditures.32
Speeding up your walking may increase your life expectancy even further. Research from the University of Sydney found walking an average pace reduced risk of all-cause mortality by 20 percent, but increasing your pace reduced your risk by 24 percent. The protective effects were also more pronounced in the older age groups.33
Watch Out to Walk Safely
One of the best ways to reduce your risk of injury while walking is not to use any digital device that would distract you from your environment. Here are several more ways to reduce your risk of injury:
Walk with reflective clothing at dusk and after
Put reflective strips on your bike or pet
Don’t assume a driver sees you; try to make eye contact with the driver
Use crosswalks
Carry ID with your emergency contact information
Let others know where you'll be going and when to expect you back
Stay in well-lit areas
Stay alert to your environment at all times
Walk facing oncoming traffic and stick to sidewalks when available
Keep the volume of your music down to hear traffic noise
