Ornette Coleman "Ornette on Tenor" 自由自在に疾走する、アルトではないテナーのオーネット・コールマン！1961年、Atlantic Recordsレーベルと名作予感のカバーに▲Jazz beginner's personal challenge No. 26。 オーネットはContemporary Recordsと契約、"Something Else!!!! ", "Tomorrow Is The Question!"の2枚を発表後、彼の才能を高く評価していたジョン・ルイス(MJQ)の勧めでニューヨークに移り、1959年にAtlantic Recordsに移籍。 センセーショナルな"Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation"を1960年12月21日に録音。本作は、1961年3月22,27日NY録音で、そのAtlanticでのラスト・アルバム。カバーの配色、赤緑黄色の3色はズバリAtlanticカラー、意識的？ 彼は元々テナー、本作の世評は高くないが、原点のハード・バップ的な部分とフリー・ジャズ的挑戦的な彼のスピリットが融合した稀少な名演。私にとっては、ここがギリギリかな。難解さは、あまり感じない。 ｢テナーはリズム楽器。黒人にとってSOULとは一体何なのか、そのBESTな声明はテナー・サックスによってなされた。考えてみればわかるだろ？テナーにはHONK(警笛)があって、それが人々の心をとらえる。テナーを演奏できれば、人々を線路に飛び込みたくなるような気持ちにすることだってできるんだ。特にあのD♭のブルースだ。そのD♭のブルースは、人々の魂に訴えることができるんだ... ｣ これがライナーに掲載されている｢何故今回はテナーなのか？｣という質問に対するオーネットの答え。なぜ普段はアルト？D♭のブルースって何？そんな曲ない。 オーネットのニューオリンズ、テナー・サックス時代のこと。｢ブルース｣でソロをとっていてモダンなフレーズを挿入したら、客は不快感を示しダンスを中断。オーネットがソロをやめたら客はダンスを再開。その夜クラブの外に呼び出され、見知らぬ男に殴る蹴るされた上、テナー・サックスを放り投げられ破損、(リトワイラー著オーネット伝記)。この事件がきっかけで、オーネットはプラスチック・アルト・サックスを演奏するように。 さらに遡ってテキサス時代、調子に乗ってテナーを演奏していたら、クラブ内で殺人事件が。オーネットは自分の音楽のせいだと思い悩んだと(これも伝記)。 彼にとってテナーは呪い？その封印を解いたのが本作か。D♭は？テナーはアルトより低く♭は変調。聴衆を不快にさせ不安に陥れるそんなブルースを演奏していたのかも知れない。 #OrnetteColeman (ts) #DonCherry (pocket tp) #JimmyGarrison (b) #EdBlackwell (ds) #jazz #fuzey #atlanticrecords #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #jazzrecords #ジャズ #��イングジャーナル

Ornette on a Friday deserves many exclamation points! In all seriousness, though, the exclamation point in the title of Ornette Coleman's "Ornette!", released on Atlantic Records in 1962 is pretty descriptive of how surprising and full of energy the music is on this recording. This is a fantastic version of Ornette's quartet, featuring his favorite drummer Edward Blackwell, as well as the very incredible Scott LaFaro on bass, alongside Coleman and trumpeter Don Cherry. They get right into it on the first track "W.R.U" and you can tell right then and there that Blackwell and LaFaro will make for a very different rhythm section than Haden and Higgins, or even Haden and Blackwell himself - such is the power of LaFaro's unparalleled ability for musical interplay, then quite evident in his work with pianist Bill Evans. Playing with Ornette Coleman is as far away as he could probably get from playing with Evans, yet the fundamental quality in his playing manages to remain unchanged, which is what marks a truly individual player. Blackwell's drumming is also highly innovative, while very much rooted in the second-line tradition of one of Jazz's birth places, and Blackwell's hometown, New Orleans. Every time Blackwell takes a solo here is an event in itself - the track "T&T" being a prime (and extended) example. To me this is Ornette's rhythm section record, and since I am a drummer and a massive Blackwell fanatic, it should not surprise you to hear that it is my favorite Ornette Coleman record.
