Watching the documentary “Chasing Trane” and the story of how #JohnColtrane secluded himself in the room above his garage in his house for two weeks working on a project and only coming downstairs to get morsels of food every now and again. He was working on a suite that he didn’t have any direction on how this suite was going to go other than him having some loose ideas and melodies floating in his head. Once he was finished as his wife Alice Coltrane stated, “It was like Moses coming down from the mountain.” As Trane would say to his wife, “It’s the first time I have everything read.” “I’ve completed the project on paper.” “I know exactly what I’m gonna do in the studio.” “A Love Supreme” was recorded on December 9, 1964, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Trane on tenor, soprano and vocals, #JimmyGarrison on bass, #McCoyTyner on piano and #ElvinJones on drums and gong. It was released on Impulse! in January 1965. It became one of the most acclaimed jazz records in modern history and by 1970 had sold over 500,000 copies, far exceeding Trane's usual sales of about 30,000, although it never charted on the Billboard 200. The story of this Japanese copy goes like this, my first time in a Japanese record story I wanted to purchase everything, but I settled on #MilesDavis “Kind of Blue”, #HerbieHancock “Takin’ Off” and this, but I only had enough money to purchase two, so I actually put this copy back. Once payday hit a few days later I headed straight down to the record store and purchased this Japanese copy. This was in mid-March of 1981, so this copy has been in my possession for over 40 years.
