I wonder how the other ghosts reacted to become ghosts for the first time. Robin mentions that everyone tries to leave at first, I wonder how many times Captain ran full speed at the gate, or if Pat panicked and tried to reason with the others that he needed to see his family. How many times did Fanny scream at George before she gave up, how much of Isabelle’s life did Thomas get to see. Once Humphrey got used to Robin, did they spend a lot of time together? Did Kitty try to join in on Eleanor’s life if she both outlived her and stayed at the house?

3. For kitty, Eleanor, Thomas, Isabelle, Francis and Mary from bbc ghosts
3. A song that reminds me of them
Kitty: “Pretty Little Head” by Eliza Rickman, the song has a childlike feel while also having a bit of a darker undertone within the lyrics
Eleanor: “String Quartet No. 8 in C minor” by Shostakovich, that song sounds like pure evil but it’s still really good lol
Thomas: “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, No questions asked lol
Isabelle: “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi, I mean technically it’s not her fault but Thomas didn’t know that for a super long time so…
Francis: “Night on Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky, I mean just listen to it, it’s so sinister lmao
Mary: “Gather Up” by Matt Berry, (yes, that Matt Berry) it’s just a song listing a bunch of herbs but it’s super catchy and I love it

Mathew Baynton: 'We've held off doing Kitty's story for so long, we'd begun to feel, like, actually I think it'd be really disappointing if it is just her sister poisoning her. What's lovely is that Kitty's always been totally non-judgmental of her sister while the ghosts all...'
Nathan Bryon: 'Know what time it is, yeah!'
MB: 'They really care about her, but, you know... obviously they've got this judgment of her sister from everything that she has ever said about her. But unbeknownst to her and unbeknownst to them, her sister did have this moment of conscience.'

Colour Symbolism: Katherine
Tumblr media
Kitty’s outfit is what I consider another kind of clothing deception. Burgundy is a symbol of power and wealth, which are both not significant to Kitty. It’s a representation of her family, whilst the ambition aspect shows Kitty’s excitement for love and life. Kitty seems to have a fondness for bows in her dresses, incorporating a part of her unique personality. Burgundy applies to her individuality, which is further highlighted by the use of bows. Pink is Kitty’s signature colour in a large fraction of her dresses, and with a combination of orange, represents a sense of youth and enthusiasm.
The pink and orange of the bows stands out apart from the burgundy, as it conventionally should, but also represents the exclusion Eleanor exerts over Kitty from their family. Okay, now Kitty’s pink looks-
Tumblr media
Her blue dress is in a scene where Eleanor knocks over her cards. Light blue is commonly associated with trust and reliability, something Kitty has in her sister. It brings feelings of peace, which she feels when alone and content. An undertone of pink coupled with blue implies she is hopeful in love, as we know Kitty to be very excited by the prospect. In this scene, Eleanor is wearing (what I assume is) white-
Tumblr media
She presents herself as both equally hopeful and angelic. She presents herself as trustworthy to Kitty in an act of deception, allowing Kitty to lower her guard. Her first look being white throws you off to begin with despite what we’ve already heard about her. The maliciousness of her actions become more clear leading to the end, when she wears the dark dress. Eleanor’s descent shows the gradual revealing of her real personality.
Tumblr media
Kitty’s other pink look is worn when possible suitors arrive, further enforcing Kitty’s pursuit of love. It is a stereotypically feminine and youthful colour, showing Kitty’s naïveté in love. Kitty’s other looks are either light blue or green, which are decidedly less intense than Eleanor’s, showing Kitty’s more kind and open nature.
Tumblr media
In the scene she accidentally breaks the urn, Kitty is wearing greenish bluish colour, which may have been used to frame her in a more malicious light with the envy symbolism. Eleanor wears yellow, presenting herself as more positive and optimistic to frame herself as a victim. Kitty’s light colours show her honesty and innocence which is contradicting her memory of Eleanor’s actions, as she knows something is wrong.
Tumblr media
Knowing Eleanor, yellow is another representation of deception, appearing sincere to her father and to Kitty. Eleanor’s other looks are dark greens, showing that she was the jealous one. Kitty’s dresses are rarely dark, her burgundy one being the exception. This shows the contrast between them, Kitty being oblivious to Eleanor’s malicious intent.

oh dont mind me just thinking about how Eleanor might could have died at Button House and haunted for a while and so then not only could the ghosts observe her, they could interact with her and thats why theyre all so familiar with her and with Kitty's toxic relationship with her which probably continued once theyd both died

i think it's interesting how pineapple day has effectively recontextualised eleanor from a malicious figure to a childish bully. don't get me wrong, it hasn't made her actions to kitty any less cruel or upsetting, but there isn't the same kind of callous ruthlessness behind her actions that we see with francis in the thomas thorne affair. she is, ultimately, not sitting around plotting murder like certain other characters i could name. she's just childish, and mean, and petty. deeply unpleasant, for sure, but not exactly a villain.

the inherent sadness of eleanor never being able to be the sister she wanted to be. she realised too late that kitty loved her despite everything and that she wasn't a threat to her. then kitty died before she could make good on her word to be better. and that would've eaten eleanor up for the rest of her life. eleanor had chance after chance to be kind and never took them. she was only kind when she realised what she was losing. and i can almost guarantee from that day on, eleanor made the conscious choice to be kind. because being kind can be hard when you're bitter and misguided on top of losing someone you cared for. and yet kitty made it look easy. so what was stopping eleanor when she already had everything? so she apologised to polly. she admitted to their father it was her who broke the bust of their mother and destroyed kitty's dress. she grew burgundy roses beside her herb garden in memory of kitty. kitty was so full of life and love and kindness, that even as she slipped away in her sleep, she was helping people. ok, maybe eleanor wasn't the sister she could've been, but after kitty died, i like to think she actively chose to become the person kitty thought she was.

It’s really kinda sad painful and interesting that the Captain’s death is one of the few where we don’t see him become a ghost. We almost expect it but the final shot of that scene is just him laying lifeless on the floor (and I suppose there there’s some mirroring between his and Kitty’s death, especially through the cinematography). How horrific must that have been when he did become a ghost? To be able to see Havers and trying to reach out to him, trying to get through to him only for Havers to never know he was still there, alone. Having to listen to all the nasty comments made by the other officers. To watch Havers leave the house for a second time, unable to get his attention or say goodbye.
