It was also a good time to do so because we're repainting my room and while there's usually a ton of anime merch in front of the books on my shelves, now it's all been packed up. So there's a clear look at the books without me having to move anything, lol.

Stardew Characters' Spirit's Eve Costumes

Happy Halloween / Spirit's Eve / Blessed Samhain / whatever you may celebrate today! Many people dress up in costume for this holiday - what might the residents of Stardew Valley be dressed as this year? (note: there are a few costumes of characters that likely wouldn't exist in the Stardew Valley universe, but I believe that if they did, it would be a likely fit for certain peoples' costumes.)

Abigail: Westley (from The Princess Bride)

Alex: a zombie, maybe even a zombie gridball player

Caroline: a witch

Clint: a ghost (white sheet style)

Demetrius: Gomez Addams (from The Addams Family)

Dwarf: likely doesn't celebrate the holiday (due to not following many human customs), and therefore wouldn't dress up

Elliott: Howl Pendragon (from Howl's Moving Castle)

Emily: A ghost, but full out with a - historically accurate - dress recreation from 170 years ago, white face/body paint, and shimmer powder

Evelyn: The Bride of Frankenstein

George: Frankenstein's monster

Gus: A stereotypical summer tourist (including a bum bag/fanny pack, white face paint as nose sunscreen, a floral shirt, and a far too large sunhat)

okay!!! sad is a little vague, so i’ll do some different recs on various levels and kinds of sad. i’m also going to try to be a bit vague, so i don’t spoil anything. also, the category’s are subjective, somebody else might put a series in a different category (i also haven’t watched most of them and i’m going off assumptions and what other people have said!) this is going to be.. very long because i have no self restraint lol.

the most obvious Will Make You Cry bunch: Your Lie In April (for obvious reasons)Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (don’t need to explain this one either)Angel Beats (particularly the last few episodes)Clannad (particularly Clannad: After Story)Grave of the Fireflies (two young kids try to survive world war II)

a bit more obscure sad, Might Make You Cry:Colorful (a soul gets another chance at life, in the body of a boy who committed suicide)Wolf’s Rain (a pack of wolves try to find paradise. has a 4 episode OVA series that continues the plot to its end)Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (tokyo gets hit with a magnitude 8 earthquake, about kids and a biker lady who looks after them) A Silent Voice (the main character almost kills himself. at the beginning of the movie. about bullying, depression, suicide, and healing)

Moving, but probably won’t cry unless you’re Weak:Given (also deals with suicide. a shounen-ai about boys in a band)Death Parade (people who died at the same time play games to decide which one will be reincarnated, and which one will be sent to the void) Erased (a guy wrongfully accused of murder gets sent 18 years into the past to prove his innocence)Stars Align (a tennis anime about awful, terrible parents and good friends)King of Nabari (the anime is sad too but the manga fucking eviscerated me. seems like a typical shounen from the get-go but then the protag joins the bad guys)Natsume’s Book of Friends (a boy with a troubled past who can see youkai. the ending of season 4 is especially heartbreaking)Natsuyuki Rendezvous (a man falls in love with a flowershop lady. unfortunately, she’s being haunted by her dead husband)Searching for the Full Moon (a girl with throat cancer refuses to have her vocal cords removed until she becomes a famous enough singer that her songs reach her crush in america)No. 6 (another shounen-ai. two boys attempt to overthrow a dystopian government)(^most of the saddest parts are the endings)

Sad in an Anxiety Inducing kind of way: The Promised Neverland (kids being raised as livestock to feed the rich and powerful try to escape their orphanage)When They Cry (a boy moves to a town right before their biggest festival of the year. the story loops to the starting point every time someone fucks up and kills everyone. heavy on the dementia)Madoka Magica (a cute story about cute magical girls :3)D. Gray Man (this is what it feels like to watch a losing war. more than enough comedic relief at the beginning, but the closer you get the the end the more stressful it is)Made in Abyss (small kids explore a very big, deep cavern filled with monsters that even adults have trouble getting back out of)Banana Fish (a young man runs away from a mafia boss to investigate a drug that destroyed his brother’s mind and is hunted down)Rainbow (about teenage boys in a “reform school” (a prison) who plot to escape together. warning for extreme child abuse)Now and Then, Here and There (a guy tries to save a girl from kidnappers and is transported to a desert world. also a warning for torture)

Angsty, bad things happen but in a campy way: Re:Zero (a guy in a fantasy world has the power to reset time when he dies. which he does. often)Akame ga Kill! (a group of assassin’s overthrowing a corrupt government)Elfen Lied (a tortured woman escapes experimentation, earning herself a split personality on the way out)Guilty Crown (a guy who can make weapons out of people’s souls joins a war against an evil government)School-Live (i HIGHLY recommend you just watching the first episode without reading the synopsis…. but if that isnt enough to convince you, this is a zombie show)Charlotte (from the creator of Angel Beats and Clannad, guy with ability to use other people’s bodies helps track down other people misusing their abilities)Magical Girl Site (a girl who is bullied at school and abused at home plans to kill herself but suddenly gains magical powers)

Love Triangle drama/sad romances:Toradora (starts off as a pretty perky comedy, but when it gets sad it stays there)A Lull in the Sea (kids who live underwater have to transfer to the school above ground when their highschool is under construction, only to face discrimination)Fruits Basket (a girl meets a cursed family who, when in contact with the opposite sex, transform into zodiac animals) ef - a tale of memories. (3 interconnected stories of romance and tragedy)Golden Time(a guy with a bad case of amnesia starts college in tokyo and meets a lovely girl)

Now:

St. Mary’s Convent

Ilchester, Maryland

1972

A priest is possessed by a demon. Later, at a service with the nuns, his prayers are a little uncouth.

He locks everyone in the chapel. He starts to ramble a little more about fathers and then his eyes flash yellow. He pulls out a big knife and well, I guess service ends little differently than normal too. 

Meanwhile, Sam stares pensively into the distance. Is he making the right choice? Did he condition his hair too much this morning? Ruby snaps him out of his morose contemplations. Sam’s sad about how he and Dean left things. He knows that there isn’t an “after” for him once they do what they’re planning. 

Dean, meanwhile, stares morosely out Bobby’s window. 

For Elfen Ears and Freckles Science:

Bobby snaps him out of his thoughts. Bobby wants Dean to reach out to Sam again. He shouldn’t give up on his brother. Dean goes into full soap opera mode and makes it clear that “Sam is gone.” He’s not even sure Sam is even his brother anymore --if he ever was. I’m just lol-ing over his overdramatic ass, but Bobby loses his shit and gives Dean the football coach speech. Then he compares Dean to John. And he calls John a coward. SHOTS FIRED! Bobby then makes it clear that Dean is a better person than John (to which Dean scoffs at...grr, Dean!). 

Dean turns away and the next thing he realizes is that he’s in the Green Room. Cas is there. He tells Dean, “It’s almost time.”

At a hospital, a nurse takes a baby from its parents presumably so they can get some rest. In reality, it’s a demon set on nefarious ways. She’s stopped by Sam though. 

Dean wanders his prison and finds beer and burgers...and Zachariah. 

He wants Dean to relax before go time. All the seals are broken, but one. Zach tells Dean that it’ll happen the following night at midnight, and Lilith has to be the one to break it. 

Sam is torturing the demon for Lilith’s location. She doesn’t really see a reason to give it up --she’s dead no matter what. 

Dean calls and leaves a message for Sam. His apology gets cut short. And Sam doesn’t get it anyway because he’s really going to town on torturing the demon. The demon admits that Lilith will be at a convent (the very same one from the cold open) tomorrow night. Ruby wants to drain her of her blood. The demon reminds them that she’s possessing a human, and lets the human come out to play. 

We then flashback to the convent in the aftermath of the possessed priest’s bloodbath. He prays to Lucifer, who responds through the voice of a dead nun. Lucifer tells him that Lilith can break the seals. Then Lucifer instructs old Yellow Eyes to find him a special child. 

Cut to Sam Winchester doing research on the convent. He’s all nerding out over what I can imagine is the serial killer aspect of the murders. 

Ruby’s ready to roll and wants to pack up the nurse and get going. Sam’s showing a little reluctance for murdering the possessed woman. Despite her pleas, Sam still throws her in the trunk of his car. Yowza. 

Like a bored house cat, Dean starts knocking things over in the Green Room. Cas shows up. “I need something,” Dean says. “Anything you wish,” Cas responds. Boy, doesn’t that sum up their relationship for the past 12 years? Dean wants to see Sam. Cas doesn’t think it’s a good idea. 

Dean wants to leave. It becomes clear that the angels are not going to let him leave. And Cas is gone without a word. 

Over the constant, horrible symphony of nurse Cindy’s screams from the trunk, Sam and Ruby chat as they drive. Sam’s horrified by Cindy’s terror and Ruby reminds him that every demon he drains dry is like this: a scared human trapped in their own body. (She accuses him of trying to grow a “persqueeter” -- for which I tell her to go fuck herself.) Sam’s having doubts that he’s on the right path. 

Dean tries to break his way out of the beautiful room. I bet you could use a GRENADE LAUNCHER right about now, eh? Nothing he does seems to make an impact. Zachariah flaps down to rub it in. Dean demands to see Sam, and asks how to kill Lilith. It’s now that Zachariah drops some truth bombs. Heaven’s plan all along has been for the final seal to break. “The end is nigh. The apocalypse is coming, kiddo. To a theater near you.”

Not every angel knew the grand plan, Zachariah admits, but Heaven’s top brass allowed all the seals to break. While Zachariah talks about Heaven’s glorious victory in the coming battle, Dean takes another look around the room. This time, he realizes that the beautiful paintings are full of depictions of angels versus demons, and bloody war. People are just acceptable losses. Dean insists that Sam will save the day.

Zacharian tries to “comfort” Dean, telling him that he his role in the apocalypse is actually to stop Lucifer after he rises. No pressure! And where’s God? “God has left the building,” Zachariah says smugly before he peaces out again. 

At a spooky convent, a security guard patrols when he’s confronted by Lilith! It’s show time, baby. 

Still trapped in the room, Dean’s trying to call Sam when Cas arrives. “You’re outside your coverage zone,” Castiel, cell service technician of the lord, says. He tells Dean that all the trouble Sam’ll get into will be entirely his own doing. But Cas has flapped down for Dean. “We have been through much together, you and I. I just wanted to say I’m sorry it ended like this.” (I have no regrets for the gleeful series of pictures of Dean and Cas that are about to follow.)

Dean’s not receptive to an apology, and takes a swing at Cas.

“This is long foretold,” Cas insists. 

Dean refuses to condone this argument. “Destiny? God’s plan? It’s all a bunch of lies, you poor, stupid son of a bitch!” The apocalypse narrative is Heaven’s way of keeping the grunts in line.

“You know what’s real?” Dean asks. “People. Families. That’s real.” (Excuse me while I make the EYEBALLS EMOJI at season 15 because dang, ya’ll.)(Boris, curled in a ball in the corner: “We are.”)

Cas demands to know why the world ought to be saved when there’s suffering in it. When paradise descends it will bring peace. This is such an angel line it KILLS ME. (Especially with all we now know about Heaven.) “You can take your peace and shove it up your lily white ass,” Dean says quietly. 

Dean would rather have pain, guilt, and dark!Sam than be some “Stepford bitch in paradise.” A super valid, excellent point, even if I am going to take a moment to picture Dean Stepfordized. Dean insists that there is a right and wrong side, and Cas is currently on the wrong end of it. 

Dean begs for Cas’s help to get to Sam and stop him from opening the last seal. Cas knows if he rebels, they’ll all be killed. “If there’s anything worth dying for,” Dean insists, “this is it.” Cas looks conflicted but nevertheless doesn’t immediately swing over to the rebellion, and Dean disgustedly tells him that they’re “done.” Cas flaps out.

Outside the convent, Sam contemplates what he’s about to do. Ruby prods him to act, playing with her demon-smiting knife impatiently. Sam finally checks the voicemail that Dean left near the beginning of the episode. Only, it’s not quite how we remember it. In the voicemail, Dean now accuses Sam of being a “blood sucking freak” and a monster, and promises to kill Sam. Um. Behind Sam, Ruby smirks.

It’s go-time now. Sam decides he’s his own only hope and tells Ruby to pull the screaming nurse from the trunk. 

In the beautiful room, Dean finally gives in to temptation and picks up a burger when Cas arrives, spins him around, and pins him to the wall. 

For Mark Me Down as Scared and Horny Science:

Cas pulls out a knife, cuts his forearm, and inscribes a sigil on the wall with his own blood. When Zachariah shows up, pissed off, Cas blasts Zachariah away. 

Cas tells Dean that they’re heading off to stop Sam from killing Lilith who (surprise!) is the final seal. When she dies, Lucifer pops out like a dancer in a birthday cake. 

Cut to Chuck, who’s pacing around his house ordering women on the phone. EXTREME SIDE EYE. Dean and Cas flap in, looking for answers. 

At the convent, Lilith holds court when Sam arrives. The lesser demons fall insta-dead while Lilith closes the doors to her chamber. Dun dun DUN!

Chuck hands over information on Sam’s showdown with Lilith to Cas. “You’re not in this story,” Chuck says accusingly to Cas. 

“We’re making it up as we go,” Cas says. 

Chuck’s house starts to rattle. An archangel is descending to nip this little angelic rebellion right in the bud. Castiel vows to “hold them all off.” He zaps Dean to the convent and awaits the approach of the archangel.

Sam makes his way into Lilith’s chamber and pins her to the altar with his mind mojo when Dean arrives on the scene. Ruby smirks at Dean before slamming the doors shut between the two brothers. Sam burns Lilith out with his fancy demon-blood powers while Dean shouts through the door and Ruby screams at him to finish the job. Lilith laughs at Sam, mocking him for his hesitation, and that’s what does it. Sam kills her with demon-black eyes. 

Lilith’s blood seeps across the floor like it’s on a mission. Actually, it IS on a mission. It oozes into a circle. Ruby’s ecstatic and tells Sam that he opened the door for Lucifer. She may have been hated by demons for her apparent betrayal but “I was the best of those sons of bitches,” Ruby insists. “The most loyal.” Sam tries to pin what just happened on Ruby but she throws it right back at him. His choices brought him to this point. She just gave him the options. Horrified, Sam asks why he was the one to unleash Lucifer. “Because it had to be you, Sam.” OUCH. 

Dean breaks through the doors at last and storms over. Sam grabs Ruby so Dean can stab her. Hooray! They’re working together again! And then the cage starts to open. WHERPS. Sam apologizes futilely as the room fills with impossibly bright light. Lucifer’s on his way out.

Elfen Lied – 01 – A Study in Extremis

The haunting opening credits feature Latin vocals and Klimt-inspired art, a blending of the sacred and the profane. A research subject breaks free of her industrial-strength restraints and goes on a harrowing homicidal rampage, lifting neither arm nor finger but utilizing a kind of telekinesis to relieve both guard and functionary of their heads and/or various limbs.

Every effort to stop or slow her steady march ends the same way: an abundance of blood and viscera staining an otherwise cold and sterile environment. She is finally seemingly neutralized by a shot to the head from an anti-tank round, and falls at least fifty feet into the inky ocean. But, of course this isn’t the end of Lucy…it’s only the beginning…of Elfen Lied.

Why am I watching and reviewing this show, which aired fifteen years ago in the season before Bleach premiered? Many reasons: A look at a show I missed because I wasn’t even into anime back then; a means of complementing today’s crisper, cleaner, and overall safer anime; and mere curiosity in a show notorious and controversial for its transgressive content; a show nearly as many people hate as love.

Also, it’s a show that gives you those first ten minutes, then follows it up by switching gears completely. What follows is a mundane, low-key romantic comedy without a hint of the supernatural horror or military intrigue of the prologue. College student Yuka meets up with her same-aged cousin Kouta in Kamakura, and end up on the beach reminiscing about his departed little sister, Kaede.

That’s when Yuka notices something, or rather someone quite out of place: a buck naked woman with pink hair: the research subject Lucy. Due to her head injury, she seems to have reverted to the developmental state of a young child, and can only say one word—nyu—which they eventually decide to name her.

Since Yuka and Kouta are decent folk, they do what anyone would do: offer Nyu clothes and then shelter at the otherwise vacant ten-room inn where Kouta and Yuka will be living. She confirms her developmental state by being unable to adequately communicate she has to use the bathroom, and relieves herself on the floor of the foyer.

As Lucy has profoundly changed and entered a profoundly different world than the lab where she no doubt lived and suffered for quite a while, her handlers are already planning an operation to hunt her down and eliminate her, as the lab’s chief researcher declares that an unbound Lucy in the outside world would spell the “end of mankind”.

Bando, the man they choose to lead the manhunt, is about as heartless and despicable as they come. He’s bored with simulated kills, slaps the shit out of unwitting assistants, and desires nothing but the opportunity to kill without restraint. In effect, he’s a “Lucy” by choice. In any case, he surely won’t hold his fire just because Lucy isn’t quite herself.

After sharing a meal of onigiri with Yuka and Nyu, Kouta takes out a shell that he keeps as a memento of his deceased sister, who died suddenly of an illness. Nyu interprets his connection to the shell as something making him sad (not necessarily wrong) and breaks it into pieces, throwing Kouta into a rage. He shouts and fumes and tells her to get out, and she does.

Returning to the now rain-soaked spot of beach where they found her, Nyu stares out into the ocean and tears start to fall from her eyes, as Bando & Co. close in on her via helicopter. Roll Credits.

Elfen Lied is a compelling blast from the past with a first episode that packs a vicious punch in its first act before easing into its more domestic latter two. It’s an exploration of extremes, be it between Lucy and Nyu, the research facility and the sleepy Japanese town, the blunt lethality of Bando and innocence of Kouta, and yes, the warmth of human flesh and blood and the chill of metal and concrete.

It sets things up superbly for one hell of a clash of worlds and personalities—between parties that seek to simply live their quiet little lives, and those who seek to end a life, before, as they claim, it threatens to end all life. Having no previous knowledge of Elfen Lied or where it goes, a great start is no indication of a great anime, but most definitely warrants further viewing.

Return of the Anime Copypaste Game

Back in August, I did a little list/game thing about basically how I feel about certain anime.  Well I saw another list like that floating around that has *more* questions, so I figured I might as well answer the ones I didn't do last time around!

ANIME I CAN WATCH AGAIN AND AGAIN: Excel Saga.  Don't ask me to account for why I find it as funny as I do.  It's just the "references and meta-humor" show that appeals the most to me.  Plus I'm a sucker for "totally inept (or at least comically failed) attempts to take over the world" as a premise.

ANIME THAT MADE ME FALL IN LOVE WITH ANIME: It's really been more of a process than an event, but if you mean "show that convinced me anime is something grown-ups can like too", then I am slightly embarrassed to admit the answer is probably Tenchi Muyou.

ANIME THAT CHANGED MY LIFE: Elfen Lied, and not in a good way.  It will haunt me for the rest of my life.  That show is truly disturbing -- and not just for the gore, but for the actual plot.

ANIME THAT SURPRISED ME: Surprised in a good way?  I resisted Full Metal Panic! for years because I vaguely remembered ads for it that implied the main focus was the Sousuke-Kaname-TelethaTeresa love triangle.  This turned out to be very wrong, and instead I got a very good sci-fi series with a well-functioning core ensemble of characters that stays consistently engaging across many tone shifts.  Surprised in a bad way?  I still can't get over how much That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime fell apart after the first few episodes.

GUILTY PLEASURE: ... ... ... Interspecies Reviewers.  Just you wait.  It's going to be in the 2020 End of Year Mini-Review Pack.

ANIME I SHOULD HAVE SEEN BY NOW: I bought the complete series of Avatar: The Last Airbender two years ago because it was shockingly cheap at Target.  I still haven't opened it.  Don't @ me.

GREAT ANIME TO SEE: I'm not sure I understand what this one is asking me...?  If it means "most spectacular to look at", then the easy winner is Puella Magi Madoka Magica.  Wow.  Just wow.

ANIME I WISH I HAD NEVER WATCHED: Can I possibly get back the time I wasted on Mikagura School Suite?  The fact that it was inconsistent from episode to episode in exactly how bad it was got me stuck in a gambling-like situation of continuing to spend my time on it in hopes of a "payoff" of the next unpredictably-spaced enjoyable bit.

ANIME I WISH HAD MORE SEASONS: SOOO many.  But first and foremost: how the hell hasn't there been a second season of No Game No Life yet?  It's popular!  It got a prequel movie!  There's more books to use as source material!  It clearly ended in such a way that it was not ready to be over yet!  Make more of this show!  Aaaaaah!

Do you wet your toothbrush before or after you put on toothpaste? (Or both?) After, though before might actually be more convenient because sometimes the blob of toothpaste falls off the brush when I wet it. 

Are/were you a smoker? And if you quit, how? I have never touched a cigarette my entire life, but i think I’ve inhaled enough secondhand smoke from my dad to account or at least a couple of packs, haha.

If you watch anime, what’s the first one you ever watched in its entirety? I...don’t know, actually? I started watching when I was 15-ish, but it was all ongoing series. I might have finished Elfen Lied first, and all I can remember is lots of severed limbs and misery. 

Can you listen to music and read/write at the same time? Ha, no! Whenever I listen to music and read simultaniously I end up focusing on the music rather than on the words I’m reading. Curiously, I am able to draw/design while listening to music just fine.

What’s your favourite kind of tree? Hnnn, I think the Rainbow Eucalyptus tree is very beautiful. Other than that, I have fond memories of collecting chestnuts with my family in autumn, so I have to mention the chestnut tree.

Do you remember your myspace URL? I never had myspace. My country had it’s own social networksite before facebook got popular. 

What was one of your favourite shows as a kid? Pfffffttt, I liked Pokemon a lot, haha. but I liked a lot of shows as a kid I think. 

If you had a chance to meet and speak with your favourite actor/musician, would you? I don’t love any actor of musician enough to want to meet up with them, so no. 

What’s a question you wish people would stop asking you? I get a lot of questions regarding my decision not to eat anything at a meet-up or gathering or something, and while i know it is well meant I just don’t really want to get into it everytime.
