#10: You Are Here: Connecting Flights edited by Ellen Oh
On the map, the airport was a sprawling complex with numerous concourses branching out from the main terminal like long, curving spider legs.
Rating: 4.5/5
Three Sentence Review: This was such a fun, fast read! I love short story collections that are woven together in one time and place like this, even if I am certainly older than the target audience for this particular book. I think all of the lessons in this book make it a great and important read for kids and adults of all backgrounds and ages.

The Courage of Writing Nuance
One of my textbooks this semester is Words Overflown by Stars, a collection of craft essays by Vermont College MFA faculty. This week I contemplated Ellen Lesser’s essay “The Girl I Was, the Woman I Have Become: Fiction’s Reminiscent Narrators.” Specifically, she reflects on “the point in time from which the story gets told” and the purpose of placing a narrator in the present, reflecting on the…

Jack Hughes x fem!reader
summary: reader gets a little too excited on her first day at the lake, resulting in a nasty sunburn
notes: hi!!!! long time so see!! my writing slump has been brutal, but i had a lil pool day today and was sitting there thinking about what a summer at the hughes lake house is like while sunbathing and this little piece popped into my head. it’s not much and probably a lil all over the place, but i hope you enjoy!! i missed all of you 🥺
[3.3k]
(also, unedited bc it’s late and i’m going to bed. i might edit it in the morning, we’ll see)
You’ve waited all year for this. You have absolutely nothing on your agenda but two straight months of lake house fun and working on your tan.
Your move to New Jersey had really put a halt to any tan building for a majority of the year. You learned quickly that the winters were long and brutal, leaving little room to feed your sunbathing addiction.
You had tried to find a salon to tan at, but you quickly got bored of the bright lights and sterile smell. You even tried spray tans a couple of times, but you always felt you had more of an orange tone than a golden one.
You didn’t have to worry about any of it for a second longer, though. You were finally in the place you craved to be year-round.
Since the season ended early for the boys this year, the Devils losing their shot at the playoffs, you and Jack had packed your things and left Jersey the second all of his current post-season duties were over with.
Jack had managed to secure himself a pass on any other post season activities the players might be pulled for. He wasn’t required to return to the city until pre-season started.
Luke and Quinn were set to join the two of you whenever they could, but with Luke playing on the U.S. national team, and Quinn’s playoff run with the Canucks coming up, it would be weeks before either brother made their way to the beloved lake house.
Ellen and Jim were also set to join at some point during the stay, but weren’t yet sure of when they could escape their work for a few weeks.
This leaves you and Jack with the entire house to yourself for the beginning of your stay. You loved the other Hughes brothers, but with Luke living with Jack and your own roommate being a homebody, the two of you were rarely ever awarded with true alone time.
You were currently putting sheets on the bed in what will be yours and Jack’s room for the next two months while Jack unloads his car.
You were nearly done when you hear the sound of a suitcase being dragged up the stairs.
“God, Y/N, I know we’re going to be here a while, but it feels like you packed your entire apartment in here.”
Poking your head out of the open doorway, you watch as your boyfriend heaves your gigantic suitcase up the double flight of stairs.
“Well, I was going to only pack a few swimsuits and pjs, but I figured I should pack some real clothes for when the rest of your family gets here.”
Jack responds with a glare as he climbs the final step, stopping to take a breather. His face was a light shade of red and there were a few beads of sweat on his top lip.
“You know, I figured since you just finished your season you’d still be in pretty decent shape, but it looks like you’re going to have to stay in the gym all summer. Maybe do a bit more cardio and weight lifting, seeing as you’re struggling to carry my lil’ ole’ suitcase,” you tease, retreating back into the bedroom to place the decorative pillows on the bed.
“Maybe if you didn’t shove a dead body in your luggage I’d be able to carry it up the stairs like a normal person. But no, you had to pack cinderblocks.” He rolls the oversized suitcase into the corner of the room, placing his own measly duffle bag next to it.
You let a small giggle slip out, walking over to where Jack was standing with his hands on his hips.
Once you reach him, you place your hands through the opening left by his arms on either side of his torso, hugging him close to you. You let your chin rest on his chest as you look up at him, his own face tilted down so he could meet your eyes.
“Thank you, my big strong hockey player boyfriend, for carrying the dead body in my suitcase up the stairs. I’ll make sure to leave your name out of all this in court,” you joke, leaning up to place a small peck on his lips.
“Oh, how kind of you. How will I ever repay you?” Jack places his own arms around you, pulling you even closer.
“Hmmm…” you pretend to think. “How about helping me rub tanning lotion on my back and laying in the sun with me for the rest of the day?”
Jack acts like he’s mulling it over, raising his eyebrows while tilting his head to one side.
“I guess I can manage that. Considering the circumstances.”
You smile up at him, pulling out of his embrace.
“Yay! Okay, I have to go get changed. Set up the chairs for us?” You ask him, clapping your hands together out of excitement.
“Your wish is my command,” Jack says with a bow, playfully rolling his eyes and shaking his head.
You turn to open your suitcase to fish out one of the many bathing suits you brought as Jack makes his way out of the room.
“Find the sunniest spot you can! I need to make up for lost time!” you shout after him, hearing a laugh as he makes his way down the stairs.
Only 10 minutes later, you walk out of the sliding glass door leading to the backyard. You spot Jack on the dock down near the lake, putting the final touches on your sunny oasis.
You make the small trek down to him, pool bag in hand and sunglasses on your face.
“Wow, all this for me?” you announce your presence as you reach the end of the lengthy deck.
Jack had set up two tanning chairs on the end of the dock, an umbrella in-between them for when you inevitably claim you’re too hot and sweaty to sit in the sun any longer. He had a small cooler set up with waters, beer for himself, and some of your favorite fruity seltzers.
He had even found a small fan that he clipped to the arm of your chair to keep you cool while you laid out in the sun. He was fiddling with the small speaker he had under the umbrella as you approached, a country song flowing out around you.
“Only the best for my little felon,” he recalls your earlier conversation, raising up to give you his full attention.
Once his eyes fall on you, his mouth snaps shut.
You had picked your skimpiest bikini, wanting to get all of the risqué swimsuits out of the way before the two of you had company later in the summer.
The number you were currently sporting was a pale pink matching set. Two tiny triangles covered your chest, while a high-legged thong covered the rest of you.
You watched as his darkening eyes raked over your body, his tongue poking out to wet his dry lips.
“Hell, baby, you can stuff my dead body in a suitcase if you’re going to look like that while doing it,” Jack breathes out.
You laugh at his response, walking over and setting your stuff on your chair, patting his bare chest as you walk past him.
You bend over to grab your tanning lotion out of your bag when you feel a light smack on your ass cheek, straightening up to find Jack standing right behind you, his hand finding its place on your exposed hip.
“Y’know, we could skip this whole tanning thing and go make use of that big, empty house while we have the chance,” Jack lowly whispers in your ear, sliding his hand around to ghost his fingers up and down the soft skin of your belly.
You lean your head back on his shoulder at the touch, allowing yourself to enjoy it for a few more seconds before turning around in his hold and placing your hands on his freckled shoulders.
“I think that’s a wonderful idea and would absolutely love to….” You trail off, standing on your tip toes and letting your lips touch his ear as you speak. Jack gulps, closing his eyes as he feels your hand slip from its spot on his shoulder and continue to move downward, almost reaching the band of his swimming trunks when you stop.
“…..after we tan” you finish, bringing your hand back up to pat his cheek, causing his eyes to shoot open.
“Okay, not fair,” he pouts as you push him back so you can continue digging through your bag.
“You told me you’d tan with me, so tan with me you shall,” you remind him, finding the bottle of lotion and holding it out to him.
Jack fulfills your wishes and very thoroughly applies the dark lotion to your skin, only being reprimanded for wandering hands a few times.
The two of you lay out on the dock for hours, enjoying each other’s company while feeling the rays soak into your skin. You talk about Jack’s team and this past season, what the upcoming season might hold, what the plan is for when the rest of the Hughes family joins, and various other light topics.
At one point you let the soft music and warmness of the sun lull you to sleep, only waking up when Jack comes over and gently shakes your shoulders.
“Y/N, c’mon, time to go inside. You’ve been in the sun for way too long, you’re going to get burnt,” Jack softly speaks to you as you come back into consciousness.
“Mmm, don’t wanna. Too comfy. Warm. Five more minutes,” you fight him, turning your head over to face opposite him.
“Nope, not an option. Can’t let you get too fried on your first day. You won’t be able to do anything for days if we don’t go inside, Lovey,” Jack uses the nickname he stole from your own family.
You grumble in protest, but peel yourself from the chair nonetheless. You notice how much lower the sun is in the sky and wonder what time it is. You pull your phone from your bag to see you’ve been out here well into the evening.
You realize you and Jack forgot to go grocery shopping after you got here, your excitement about the sunshine causing you to forget any other chores you intended on doing today.
You grab your bag and follow Jack back up the dock, admiring the way the muscles in his back are flexed due to him carrying the still full cooler on his shoulder.
“Hey, J, what are we gonna do for dinner? We don’t have any groceries and I’m not sure if you want to go out, but-“ you’re cut off by your own stomach, the growl loud enough for the two of you to hear over the music still flowing through the speaker in Jack’s pocket.
“Yeah, looks like we’re going out, huh?” Jack laughs as your cheeks turn an even darker shade of pink than they already are from the sun.
You reach the house and help unload the cooler into the fridge before making your way up the stairs to rinse off and change.
When you step into the bathroom and undress, you’re shocked to see the extremely present tan lines already formed on your very red skin. You hadn’t noticed it outside, but your entire front half is a fiery shade of red.
You lightly press two fingers to the skin in-between your breasts and notice the two white fingerprints left behind. Your eyes widen when you realize how badly burnt you are.
You exit the bathroom to grab the after-sun lotion you packed before returning and turning the shower on, making sure you remember to lather yourself in the lotion after you’re done showering.
You peel back the curtain and step under the warm stream of water, but the feeling of the water hitting your sensitive skin causes you to cry out, trying to remove yourself from the water’s harsh sting.
Your scream of pain grabs Jack’s attention, causing him to rush up the stairs and burst into the bathroom, panic evident on his face.
“Y/N, what’s wrong, are you okay?” he steps into the bathroom, looking around for the source of your scream.
“Jack, we have a problem….” You whine, pulling the curtain back to reveal the state of your skin.
Jack’s eyebrows shoot up, eyes widening at the angry, red color of your skin.
“Oh Lovey…”
You stand with the curtain open, shivering despite the elevated temperature of your skin. You had turned the water to cold to avoid the searing pain again, but the cold felt like small knives poking into your flesh.
“I think we got a little too excited with the tanning lotion….” You squeak out, trying to wrap your arms around yourself, but any touch to your skin felt like fire.
Jack’s eyes fill with sympathy, but also guilt.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I should have woken you up sooner. You just looked so content I didn’t want to make you go inside just yet.”
“No, it’s not your fault. I should have set a timer or something. You know how I get,” you wave off his guilt, knowing you can get a little sun-drunk sometimes.
Although, you had never let yourself get this burnt before.
You blame the New Jersey climate and its lack of warm weather for your tanning needs to prevent this from happening once you do manage to get somewhere warm and sunny.
Jack still looks at you, not sure what to do for you, but not wanting to leave you by yourself, seeing as you’re stuck standing with your arms held out a few inches from your torso to avoid any unwanted skin contact.
“I don’t know how I’m going to shower, Jack. The water burns so bad, even on cold. But I have to get this sticky lotion off of me,” you whine again, frustrated that you’re burnt so badly you can’t even wash the tacky lotion off of your body.
“I’ll go get a soft washcloth, hang on,” Jack leaves the bathroom for only a second before returning with a soft, blue cloth in his hands.
He adjusts the water temperature and holds the cloth under the lukewarm water for a moment before applying some of your body wash to it and handing it to you.
You take the cloth from his hands and attempt to wash yourself, but any movement of your limbs causes your damaged skin to pull, making you whimper out in pain.
“Okay, don’t worry baby, I got you,” Jack takes the cloth from you, stepping into the shower, standing in-between you and the water streaming out of the shower head.
“Please, be careful, J, it hurts,” you whine out, eyeing the cloth in his hand.
“I got you, Lovey, trust me,” Jack tells you as he drags the cloth over your skin so lightly you’re not even sure it’s touching you.
He continues the feather-light motion slowly, until he’s cleaned your entire body.
“I have to rinse you now, okay? It might sting, but we’ll go slow,” he turns to rinse the cloth, letting it soak with water once more after there’s no traces of soap left.
You close your eyes as he squeezes the water out of the cloth onto your arm, the sting only slightly better than before, but bearable enough you only have to have him stop once.
After he rinses all of the soap off of your body, Jack turns off the shower and finds the softest towel in the cabinet under the sink. He pats your sore skin dry, then rubs the after-sun lotion all over your body before helping you into your pajamas.
“Jack, I don’t think I can wear this, hurts too bad,” you tell him when he hands you the matching button up shirt to the shorts you’re currently wearing.
“Okay, go topless, then. Won’t hurt my feelings any,” he winks at you, causing you to roll your eyes with a smile.
Once you were as dressed as you could stand to be, Jack helps you to the bed sitting in the middle of your bedroom. Luckily your back wasn’t burnt, so he helps you into a partial sitting position, piling several pillows behind you to prop you up.
He starts to pull the blanket over you, but you stop him, knowing anything touching your skin right know would bring you to tears.
“Babe, you’re going to get cold if you don’t cover up with something. As soon as the sun sets you’ll get the chills,” he eyes the large window on the other side of the room, knowing it’ll be dark in another hour.
“Jack it hurts too bad, I can’t,” you cry out, pouting at him.
“Okay, fine. We’ll figure something out later,” he gives in, walking over to the other side of the bed and sitting down.
He turns on the tv and attempts to find something for the two of you to watch when your stomach growls again, reminding you that you still hadn’t eaten since this morning.
“Jack, I’m still hungry.”
“Do you want me to go grab something?”
“No, don’t leave me here by myself, what if my skin starts melting off?” you exasperated.
Jack laughs at you. “Your skin isn’t going to start melting, but fine. I’ll go find the take out menus and see who delivers.”
Thirty minutes later the doorbell rings, signaling the arrival of your Chinese food.
Jack goes to grab the food and bring plates upstairs so the two of you can eat in your bed, knowing you don’t feel like trying to walk downstairs to the dining room table.
He sets everything out like a small buffet. You manage to sit up a little straighter and try to reach for a plate, but the movement brings a new stinging warmth to the skin of your arm.
“Jack, I can’t even reach for a plate, how am I supposed to fill said plate and feed myself,” you say, frustrated.
Jack doesn’t say anything, but he takes the plate you were reaching for and puts all of your favorites on it. He grabs a fork and moves so he’s sitting cross-legged beside you.
“Here, open up,” Jack brings a fork full of food towards your mouth, motioning for you to open your mouth as the fork gets closer to you.
You open your mouth and he shovels the food in, going back in for more food once you had chewed and swallowed the first bite.
“Are you really going to sit here and feed me that entire plate?” you ask him, slightly embarrassed that this is how your first night at the lake house is going.
“Well, yeah. You said you were hungry, right?” Jack responds, looking at you as if he thought your question was stupid.
“I am, but you don’t have to do this. You can eat your food. I’ll figure out something. I feel like a kid sitting here being fed,” you tell him, wishing you could cross your arms the way you usually do when you pout.
“Y/N, you’re sitting in front of me with no shirt on. I’m trying my hardest not to stare at your boobs right now because I feel it would be wildly inappropriate to be sporting a boner when my girlfriend is clearly in pain. I can assure you, the last thing I’m thinking about right now is you resembling a kid,” he says, seriousness lacing his tone.
You laugh at your boyfriend, causing the skin on your belly to burn slightly, but you don’t care. You love how Jack can always make you feel better about any situation, even one as embarrassing as this.
“Now, c’mon and open up. Your food is gonna get cold,” he fusses, bringing another fork full of food towards your mouth.
He feeds you an entire plate of food, then eats his own. He takes the dishes and leftovers downstairs before coming back up to take a shower of his own.
Once he’s done with his own shower, he brings the bottle of after-sun back into the bedroom and lathers your skin in it once again, hoping this will help soothe your skin a bit more before the two of you try to sleep.
He settles in the bed, and as he predicted, you’ve started violently shivering.
“Can I please put a blanket on you now? I know you said it hurts, but you’re going to shiver right out of this bed if you don’t cover up,” Jack pleads, hating to see you shaking like this.
“Yeah, we can try. But maybe just the top sheet only for now,” you tell him, still apprehensive.
He gently pulls the top sheet over your body, letting it fall right at your collar bone.
You thank him for that second coat of after-sun because you can actually bear the thin cotton on your skin this time.
“Better?” he asks, waiting for any kind of negative reaction from you.
“Better. Thank you, Jack,” you tell him, causing him to relax a bit.
“Don’t sweat it, babe,” he shrugs it off, moving to get himself settled on his side of the bed.
“No, I mean it. I’m sorry I let myself ruin our first night here. I just got too eager, I guess. Forgot I haven’t laid out in a while.”
“It’s okay. Really. It’s partially my fault, too. For letting you sleep for so long without making you move under the umbrella with me,” he turns the light off, sliding down next to you, but not touching your skin.
“Well, I promise, I’m wearing sunscreen and sunscreen only for the rest of the summer,” you swear to him, moving your hand to loop your pinky through his, not being able to handle not touching him.
“I mean, I’m all for it, babe, but I don’t know how my parents and brothers will feel about that,” Jack quips back. You can hear the amused smile on his face, even though the room is pitch black.
“Goodnight, Jack.” Is all you say, rolling your eyes and smiling even though you know he can’t see you.
Jack lets out a laugh, squeezing your pinky.
Your skin may be on fire due to your love of sun soaking, but your heart has been sunburnt for years; Jack’s own personal sunshine setting it on fire every second you’re together.

Will wears earrings that glint in the sunlight.
Nico is very aware of them.
He’s never seen anything like them before. Bianca wore earrings, little citrine gems that dotted both earlobes, and Hazel wears little hoops in each ear. Piper has dozens of beaded earrings she made herself. Annabeth wears little owl charms. Percy has a diamond stud, Connor’s ears are pierced all over, and Lou Ellen has gauges she’s slowly stretching out. Most people in camp have a piercing or two, really, some of them done by the Apollo or Aphrodite campers, and really sunny days they glint together like the massive disco ball that spun over the slot machines of the Lotus.
But Will’s earrings are different.
There’s no…pokey part, is the best way Nico can describe it. Each piece is a delicate gold chain, maybe two inches long each, with a thin blue sapphire hanging off one end. He threads them through the tiny holes in his lobes, and they dangle, glittering every time he moves. The sapphires refract the light when he tucks back his hair, shining an array of tiny rainbows on his neck, on his jaw.
He is distracted by them, often.
“You’re staring.”
Nico blinks, twitching back to his body. The blue sapphires he’d been staring at are replaced with blue eyes, twinkling with amusement, and he flushes.
“I was — spaced out.”
“Mhm.” Will turns back to his arts & crafts project, dragging a brushful of lavender paint over stained wood. A jewelry box, by the looks of it. “If by spaced out, you mean staring at me.”
Nico returns resolutely to his own project. His is much less delicate than Will’s — the sheath he has strapped to his calf at all times broke, last week, and he’s felt naked without his dagger — and there’s a warp in the leather, where his attention slipped. He focuses on smoothing it.
“Not on purpose.”
“No?” Coming from anyone else, the teasing tone of voice would have him raising his shoulders, twisting his face. But from Will it’s — tolerable, somehow. Perhaps it’s the hand that rests gently on his wrist. “You space out at me a lot, then. Crazy coincidence.”
Nico stars at the freckly, tanned hand, waiting for it to move. It doesn’t. Will keeps it there, callused fingers brushing gentle circles on the base of his thumb, dipping and swooping along with his quiet humming.
Nico swallows. “You’re — distracting.”
Will’s smile spreads slowly across his face; stilted, almost, like he’d tried to bite it back.
“How?”
“You’re —” Nico gestures, vaguely, at all of him. Will’s smile grows, and his cheeks slowly grow pink, blonde ringlets falling out of place and curtaining his face.
“I’m?” he presses.
His voice is soft, near silent; searching, prodding. Hoping. Nico’s breath hitches, and his palms sweat, and Will’s gentle tracing pauses, briefly. He bites his lip, worrying the chapped skin, breathing quick; in, out, in, out. In a slow, calculated movement, watching Nico carefully, carefully, out of the corner of his eyes, he slides their palms together, fingers resting loosely in the spaces of Nico’s open, twitching hand.
“…Is this okay?”
Nico feels lightheaded. He’s sure his palms are clammy, although he can’t tell against Will’s. He gnaws at his lip again. Nico’s exhales are quick, short.
He curls his fingers until they rest on Will’s cracked knuckles.
“You’re striking,” he says quietly.
Ducking his head, Will turns back to his painting. He dips his brush in a deep, blooming green, now, tracing it along the edge of the lavender.
He’s smiling.

pairing: jack hughes x fem!reader
warnings: fake dating trope + one bedroom trope + jack being an asshole + angst + fluff at the end
a/n: HOCKEY IS BACK EVERYONE!
so maybe it wasn’t so bad to be “tied” down to a man you never actually loved in the first place. that’s a lie, it’s actually far worse.
he’s not a bad person, he’s not a bad kisser, and he’s certainly not bad looking, but his personality is far worse than shit.
his bright smiles and adorable laughter only go so far in a picture to make him seem like he was perfect, except he was so far from it. with his jagged persona and his inability to remain in an actual relationship, jack hughes was a sore spot in your heart. meaning, you knew what you signed up for, he would never actually love you.
and while smiling for his family and holding his hand in the secrecy of his family’s private summer home, there was only so far you were willing to go to prove to Ellen hughes you actually loved her son.
“I’m not sharing a room with you.”
“it doesn’t look like you have much of an option.” he snaps, words cut like a fork scraping a plate, irritation grew in your body. you knew why she did this, she believes you two have far more in common than trying to make each other roll your eyes, but this was too much. you’d rather sleep in a ball in the sand than share a queen size bed with him.
“I wish I had another option.” you mumble for only yourself, however he catches your words and just rolls his eyes continuing to unpack his things.
“you had an option of not coming. now look at the mess we are in.” he gestures his hands to the bed and around the room like a disaster had fallen amongst the four walls. if this was the worst of all things to happen to him, he had a hell of a storm coming for him one day.
you turn your head in his direction, you watch him anxiously tug on the brim of his ball cap before tossing his duffel bag beside the dresser of his clothes. his body collapses against the mattress making the frame squeak under his weight, “can this week be over already?”
“it’s only beginning.” you whisper hearing the echoes of laughter and music begin to make their way up the stairs, the music grows louder and Trevor’s voice bounces off the walls. you can already feel the impending headache.
here goes nothing.
“jack tells me you met at the bars in jersey?” Quinn takes his first dig, the two of you sit in the lounge chairs watching the other boys swim around the lake and toss around a ball that you two had no interest in.
“yeah and he wouldn’t leave me alone.” you stifle out a chuckle because out of your whole story full of lies, that was the only bit of truth. he’d followed you around like a gnat always in your face and never leaving your sight, and that’s when things began to fly south.
“he has a tendency to be very clingy when he’s drunk.”
“you don’t say.” you tilt your sunglasses down to the edge of your nose looking over at the eldest hughes who barked out a laugh in response.
turning your head in the direction of the sun, your eyes automatically fall onto the three boys in the lake: Trevor, Alex, and jack. you can’t help but let your heart melt like butter at the sight of his tanned shoulders, and muscular arms, it makes your heart jump like a kid playing hopscotch with a smile on their face.
you watch him make his way across the sand, tossing the ball in his hands he tosses it over to Quinn before slipping his wet body against yours and taking a seat on your lap. show time starts now, pretending to be in love in 3,2,1…
“saw you watching me.”
“actually I was looking at Alex.” you point your index finger over to the brunette who quickly presses a kiss to your cheek, “I knew my dimples had an affect on you.”
you can’t help the laughter that rumbles out of your body, if it wasn’t for jack hughes tying you down, you’d be all over that dimpled smile and curly black hair. but alas, the long dirty brown hair and rosy sun kissed cheeks was yours.
“I have a very adorable smile too.” jack argues flashing you a cheeky grin before getting up off your lap and taking the lounge chair beside you. you can’t help rolling your eyes, despite how your heart certainly agrees when he flashes you another wide smile before turning back to his two friends.
“you have the worlds biggest ego that’s what you have.”
“she has a point.” Quinn nudges his way into the conversation earning his brother to glare at him. it’s no secret, jack grew up with people petting his ego and feeding into his greatness, and once you didn’t confined to the rest of the worlds views, that’s when he began to notice how different you were. it automatically drew him to you, and he loved that you didn’t care that he was the worlds best hockey player, you just hated him for him.
“don’t let her win she always does.”
“I’ve actually never won an argument with you, so please yeah I would love this win.” your additional comment earns jack to roll his eyes, and just like usual this is how the banter is. you edge each other on with lies and jokes to see who will crack first, this was truly the foundation of your fake relationship. it started out with a lie and a joke. now look at you two.
he licks his bottom lip, you can see the wheels in his brain are spinning faster than a hamster wheel. he’s trying to find anything to get even, but nothing comes. he just relaxes against the back of the chair and closes his eyes, “enjoy your win.”
“oh I will, this is just the beginning of your torture.”
like it wasn’t enough torture to see you in a skimpy bikini and have to use all of his self control to not inappropriately touch you, and like it wasn’t enough torture that he has to share a bed with you.
yeah, he’s definitely had enough torture on day one.
“you want to split an ice cream cone with me?” you turn to Luke, looking up at him, he’s nothing alike to the two of his brothers. he’s got soft curls and an absolute killer personality.
“only if we get sprinkles?”
“now you have taste.” you nudge your shoulder into his bicep. you stand along side luke at the counter while he orders for you both, jack stands a couple feet away with Trevor, the two still deciding, but you can feel his eyes on you.
“what’d you get?” jack swoops in, his arm wraps around your waist and pulls you closer to him. the man behind the counter gives you both a knowing look that he had taken the hint, but it wasn’t him that jack was trying to make a message to.
“I’m sharing a cone with Luke.”
a frown forms against his lips as he lets go of your waist, “I thought we would share?”
you offer him your best apologetic look, “Luke and I like the same ice cream, you can share with Trevor.”
“I’m not sharing with Trevor.” he pouts watching luke hand you the ice cream cone. you swipe your tongue around the sweet cream swallowing the sprinkled deliciousness, “you want a kiss instead?” you offer, licking the sweetness that’s left on your lips before jack takes his thumb and swipes the corner of your mouth.
“you know,” he leans closer to your ear just for you to hear, “I don’t like sharing. especially you.”
“it’s just ice cream.” you tell him giving him a rather pointed look that earns him to back off. you know his words had zero meaning behind them. and even if they did, you still would roll your eyes, but if they were true, you’d actually kiss him to prove him you love him. instead, you stick with just pinching his side to receive a grunt from his lips.
skipping out the store doors, you and luke find an empty table to dig your spoons into the cold soft serve ice cream, “do you think he’s really mad about this?” Luke asks, mouth full of the sweet flavor, you swear by the look in his eyes it’s like he’s never had a taste of sugar in his life.
you shake your head in response, digging your spoon into the sprinkled goodness and listen to the bell of the store door chime. Trevor and jack join you both, they sit opposite to you two and it’s pure uncomfortable silence.
“should we buy turcs something?” your offer is innocent, nothing but a pure suggestion for the boy who didn’t join you four in the adventure. but there’s a look in jacks eyes that wishes you would just stop. he wishes you didn’t show an interest in anyone else.
“he doesn’t really like ice cream.” Trevor pipes in with a shrug of his shoulders, you can tell he’s trying to ease the mood, “but I’ll leave him a bite of my ice cream.”
“you’re a good guy, Trev.” you smile up at him, his dirty blond hair curls over top his forehead just above his eyebrows. your dashing smile earns him a little blush that quickly pales away when jack shoots him a look.
“I’m full the rest is yours.” you say to Luke and drop your spoon onto the brown napkin. the glares and intense stares from the man across the table was enough to ruin your appetite. what was with him? not even a month ago jack was calling you buddy behind closed doors, now in front of his family and closest friends, he chose to be an asshole? he truly is one man that’s hard to fake date.
“good night.”
he softly closes the door on his mother. she’s whisper rambling on about protection, and other embarrassing things, that you can slightly make out, but jack just closes the door. he says it’s better to stop her before she changes her mind and makes you sleep on the couch.
“so what was with you tonight?” you bite the bullet. there wasn’t a question in your mind you didn’t want answered, and after the ice cream show down you stood your distance from him. even when he rested his hand on your thigh, you made it obvious you weren’t in the mood.
he’s taking his shirt off when you look up from your phone. the white shirt is thrown over his head and soon right on to the floor among many other items of clothing, “nothing was with me.”
“please,” you bark out a sarcastic laugh. you sit upright in the bed, he paces the floor unpacking his clothes and preparing for the next morning, “you don’t like sharing me? what’s that all about?”
“I see the way you flirt with my friends.” he says so in a matter of fact tone, like it’s not news to him how you interact with everyone, “I know you want to fuck Alex.”
rolling your eyes, you toss a pillow in his direction, it hits the side of his head making him turn in your direction, “you are ridiculous, jack! I’m with you—“
“not really! this isn’t even real. you don’t like me like you like Alex.”
his shoulders slump, he crawls into bed, he curls his body close to yours, “you don’t actually like me. you’re just with me because you have to be.”
an unconscious scoff leaves you lips, “jack, I wouldn’t be spending a week with your family if I actually hated you.”
his ears perk to that, head snapping upward to meet your eyes, “what do you mean?” he asks. the words so faint against his lips he’s sure you didn’t hear him.
“I mean I like you, but man you’re the worst date ever.”
he springs upward, mouth slightly agape, “I—I was only ever being rude because I thought you hated me?”
you’re shaking your head at him. he’s unbelievable, and to think that was all his true personality, his next move proved differently. especially when it landed soft against your lips, then stronger with each passing second.
“I actually like you too, with strong feeling by the way.” he whispers these words in between breaths and gasps that escape both of your lips.
“we should stop here before your mom hears us.” you push his face away gently, “but that’s good to know you’re not actually an asshole.”
he barks out a laugh collapsing beside you, “it was hard to be an asshole to you, but now that that’s out of the way can I take you on a proper date?”
“absolutely.”

welcome to the family -quinn hughes-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: after their trip to vegas ended in an accidental marriage, the hughes brothers and y/n head to the lake house where quinn and y/n have to explain to jim and ellen that they got married
word count: 3.8k
pairing: quinn hughes x reader
notes: this is a part 2 to 'married in vegas' that was requested & i really hope you like it thanks for your patience @aphrcdites 😊 w: implied smut; loving family situations; jack being an idiot kinda; quinn being the most adorable human being; slightly coarse language
masterlist
because jack and luke had to stay back in vegas an extra night for something to do with the devils, y/n & quinn were able to get a day alone. they flew to michigan and found themselves at the lake house.
just before y/n opened the door, quinn put his hand on her shoulder to stop her. before she could question his action, he picked her up and looked at her.
"carrying you over the threshold." he smirked, as if he had read her mind.
"you're ridiculous."
"but you love me."
"but i love you." she nodded her head in confirmation as quinn opened the door and walked in with her safely in his arms. when he kicked the door closed, y/n looked up at him. "so now what?"
"now we enjoy our alone time before everyone else gets here tomorrow."
"and how you suppose we do that, hmm?"
"we take the boat out and tan a little bit, of course."
"sounds perfect. is my bikini still in the spare bedroom?"
"should be." quinn carried her upstairs and when they got to the spare room, he finally set her down. she rushed over to the dresser and pulled out the bikini she kept at the lake house.
y/n was pulling her shirt off before she felt quinn's eyes on her. she turned to face him, her eyebrow raised a little. "a little privacy, please?"
"not like i haven't seen you naked before."
"we were drunk, stupid." she giggled and when quinn pouted, she rolled her eyes. "fine. you can stay in the room but i don't want you staring. turn around."
"a win's a win." he shrugged his shoulders and turned to face the doorway. y/n changed into the bottoms first and looked behind her as she pulled the top on.
"um, can i....can i get some help with the tie, please?"
"of course." quinn turned around with his eyes closed, causing y/n to giggle again.
"babe, you can open your eyes."
quinn opened his eyes and smiled. "you are perfect. oh my." he grabbed the strings and tied them behind her neck. "have i mentioned i love it when you call me babe?"
"not yet. but noted, babe." she reached up to kiss his cheek but quinn being who he was had to turn his head at the last moment so her lips landed on his. "get changed, quinn. i'll go down and pack some snacks."
"you're the only snack i need." he leaned in for another kiss but y/n avoided him.
"oh god." y/n gently pushed him away and walked out of the room. "10 minutes, hughes." she called over her shoulder before descending the stairs.
"you got it, hughes." quinn smiled and quickly changed. the entire time they spent apart, he was thinking how awesome it was that y/n was now an actual hughes family member.
when he finally joined y/n down in the kitchen, he was pleasantly surprised at how much food she had stuffed into the bags.
"wow. you're fast." he came up behind her and rubbed her arms, placing a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
"that a good thing or a bad thing?"
"a good thing." he smiled. "a very good thing."
"good to know." she smirked and tried to pick up the loaded bag. quinn picked it up with ease and followed her out to the boat.
as they drove the boat around the lake, y/n gazed at the view. quinn did the same but his view was easily more beautiful. it was y/n smiling widely as the sun made her skin glow. she was wearing shorts over her bikini bottoms but her shirt had been removed as soon as they stepped outside. and to quinn, it was the most amazing thing he had ever seen.
y/n turned and caught him staring, causing her cheeks to burn red. the sun couldn't be blamed though.
"what are you staring at?"
"the love of my life, of course." quinn winked in her direction and slowed the boat down. he dropped the anchor and approached y/n. she grabbed 2 beers, handing one to him as he sat on the seat opposite her.
after a few moments of comfortable silence, y/n spoke up.
"have you ever had sex on the boat?"
"that came out of nowhere." he chuckled and sipped the beer. "why do you want to know?"
"i don't know. just curious, i guess."
"well, you'll be happy to know that i myself have never had sex on the boat. but i'm pretty sure luke and jack have. trevor and cole probably have as well."
"luke has?!? really? my sweet, innocent baby angel isn't so innocent?""
"no he is not. he's probably done more than all of us combined, actually."
"no. stop. i refuse to ruin the image i have of lukey in my head." y/n covered her ears and looked at quinn. "let's move on from that." she smiled. "maybe we could change the fact that you're the only one who's never had sex with someone on the boat."
"i don't think that would be very comfortable for you and your comfort is my number one priority. so, as enticing as the offer is, i think i'm gonna have to pass on this one. sorry."
"no need to apologize, quinn. it was a hypothetical statement. but i appreciate you always thinking of me."
"of course." he placed his hand on her knee and rubbed his thumb up and down. "i love you. so so much."
"i love you too, quinn." she gazed up at him lovingly. the look she was giving him made his heart melt. "the most perfect person alive."
"no. that's you." he leaned over and kissed her nose. "ready to take a dip in the water?"
"yes sir." she quickly stood up and rid herself of her denim shorts. quinn took his shoes and shirt off before picking y/n up and jumping in the water. when they resurfaced, quinn moved a strand of wet hair out of her face and grinned.
"just so you know, when we tell my parents tomorrow, they're gonna ask questions. a lot of questions."
"i'm prepared. it's jim and ellen. how many questions could they possibly have?"
----------
the next morning, y/n got up early and began to clean. the place wasn't a mess and it's not like she had to make a good first impression on them. but she was nervous and whenever she got nervous or stressed, she cleaned. non-stop.
back when she used to live with jack when he got drafted, he took notice of her actions over the months she was there. it broke his heart to see his best friend struggle the way she was so he ended up sitting her down one night and got her to spill everything to him. it was the night they both knew their friendship was solid and nothing bad would happen to one of them as long as the other one was around.
by the time quinn came down, y/n had a large breakfast buffet made and the table was set for 6.
"you didn't have to go this big, y/n/n. they already love you."
"i know. but after i cleaned up, i saw that i had plenty of time left so i figured i'd make breakfast for everyone. there's tons of food so we should be good for a while."
"two questions. one, how long have you been up?"
"3 hours. maybe 4." she sighed when quinn raised his eyebrow. he didn't believe her. "okay fine. 5 hours."
"baby, that's crazy. you need to sleep too."
"i know. but i have so much energy right now."
"okay." he chuckled. "my second question is, if you still had so much energy when you were done with the cleaning, why didn't you come wake me up? i know a few ways we could've spent our time."
"well," y/n checked her watch. "we still have a little bit of time before everyone is supposed to get here. what's one of those ways?"
"hmm, we could start by doing this." he leaned in to kiss her gently and smiled when she kissed back. "or maybe we can do this." he placed a kiss on her jawline, causing her to bite her lip.
"don't start something we can't finish." she smirked and put her hand on his chest.
"we can make it quick."
"quinn, your parents could get here early."
"they're at the airport and it takes like 20 minutes to get here from there so we have plenty of time." he searched her eyes for any rejection. he was basically begging her without saying another word. when the corners of her lips turned upwards, quinn knew he had won.
"fine. but we need to go upstairs. i'm not about to get caught in the kitchen."
"fair point." quinn picked her up and ran up to his room. whatever clothes they had on were quickly discarded and they soon found themselves tangled in the sheets.
----------
45 minutes later, y/n was putting the finishing touches on her hair and make-up when quinn walked into the room.
"you don't need to get all dressed up. they're your in-laws and like i said an hour ago, they already love you."
"i know. but i like doing this. makes me feel pretty." y/n caught his gaze in the mirror and smirked as she placed the cover up on her neck. "plus, i need to hide these marks you left on me."
"hey, i can't help it. you taste so sweet." he came up behind her and kissed the spot on her neck that was bare. "come on. they're going to be here any minute."
"okay. let's go." y/n practically ran out of the bathroom and went to the kitchen to make sure the breakfast she made an hour ago was still warm enough to eat. it was.
mere seconds after quinn's feet touched the last step, jack and luke were walking in.
"mom jsut called. said they'd be here in 5 minutes." luke informed them as he set his bag down on the floor. y/n picked it up and moved it out of the way.
"perfect." she smiled and looked at the 3 boys in front of her. jack raised an eyebrow and how happy she was.
"okay so what's going on with you two lately? i know you got married and everything and the last time it was discussed, you were on your way to get it annulled."
"yeah. about that...."quinn began but his sentence was interrupted when his parents walked through the door. jim hugged his boys while ellen went straight to y/n.
"oh it is so nice to see you, dear. it hasn't been the same since you moved to be closer to jack and luke."
"i missed you too." y/n smiled. "there's breakfast if anybody's hungry."
"well why didn't you say that first?" luke shook his head and headed to the kitchen. jack, jim and ellen followed while quinn stayed behind.
"ready to tell them?"
"let's wait until we all eat. everyone's happier when their stomachs are full.' y/n smiled and looked at quinn.
"they're gonna be happy regardless. you are aware of that, right?"
"of course i am." she smiled and headed for the kitchen. everyone had their plates filled with food and y/n noticed that luke was placing a plate down in front of her chair. "oh lukey. i love you." she kissed the top of his head and sat down.
"it's the least i could do for you, considering how you cooked it all for us. also, think of this as the start to my apology."
"apology? what did you do to her, luke?" ellen sent a playful glare in her youngest child's direction. "you better not have hurt her.
"of course not, mom. you raised me better than that." he chuckled. "i was talking about how i rigged the rooming situation for vegas and made her share a room with quinn."
"oh. well that's not so bad, really." she turned to look at y/n and quinn. "they didn't kill each other so it seems to have worked out perfectly."
"i wanted to kill him. first 3 nights there." y/n smiled. "but he's a really good guy so i didn't do it."
"that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me." quinn smirked and sipped his coffee. when he set the cup back down on the table, he didn't miss the look his mom gave him but he brushed it off as she almost immediately started another conversation with y/n.
"so, y/n, when are you and jack going to get married?"
jack, who was in the middle of drinking some water, spit it out all over luke. "wait, what?"
"what the hell, jack." luke wiped his face with his napkin and looked at his mom. "she's already married."
"you are? why didn't you tell me?" ellen turned back to y/n. "wait, more importantly, who are you married to?"
"well, it's a long story but while we were in vegas, one thing lead to another and quinn and i got married." y/n glanced up at her. "please don't be mad at me."
"i'm not mad. i'm really happy actually." ellen smiled. "a little disappointed that i wasn't invited, but ecstatic none the less. i was also hoping that you and jack would be the ones to get together. but honestly, you and any one of my boys would be good."
"so, tell us more about how it happened." jim was invested in the conversation now.
"i had been in love with jack for so long so i never really paid attention to quinn."
"but then luke rigged the rooming situation and after 4 days, she woke up from a nightmare. i comforted her as best as i could and after that, things were different."
"yeah and then at the casino, i guess quinn thought i was a good luck charm. i stayed by him all night and he won a lot of money. then we woke up the next morning and we were married. we were gonna get it annulled but while we were in the office, we couldn't do it."
"yeah. i took one look at her and just knew that even though we were drunk, marrying her was the best thing i've ever done. she is without a doubt, the perfect girl for me."
"awe. that's so sweet." ellen grinned. "you feel the same about him, right?"
"of course. you raised the perfect gentleman, ellen."
"please. call me mom." she smiled again. "oh this is so exciting. i finally have a daughter."
"am i the only one who's still focused on the fact that she was in love with me before?" jack looked around the group.
"how could you not tell?" luke, jim, and ellen said at the same time.
"anyway, we didn't have a celebration. it was a small thing at an all night chapel & korean elvis officiated it." quinn chuckled. "in fact, y/n wanted to talk to you about this mom."
"what did you want to talk about, sweetie?"
"i was hoping that since you know we're married, if you could help me throw a reception type of party."
"when do you plan on having it?"
"i was hoping we could get it all set up for this upcoming weekend."
"okay. yeah we can do it." she smiled and stood up. "let's go get some supplies. because of the short notice, it won't be fancy but we can invite quite a bit of people."
"that's fine." y/n followed ellen out to the car.
while they were gone, the hughes boys all had a serious talk about the marriage. jim acted like the perfect father figure and made sure quinn's intentions were good, while jack and luke acted like y/n's brothers and told quinn that if he broke her heart, there'd be serious consequences. if y/n had been there for the talk, she would've loved knowing just how much the family cared about her.
----------
3 days later, everything was set up and y/n was in the room getting ready for the party when quinn knocked on the door.
"you decent?" he came in with his eyes covered. y/n faced him and removed his hands.
"you really need to stop covering your eyes every time you enter a room i'm in." she giggled.
"i know i don't need to do it, but i do. it's respectful and if ellen hughes knew i wasn't being a gentleman, she'd kick my ass."
"fair point. she's the best."
"yeah. she truly is." he pulled her close and admired her for a few moments. "so, has mom been bugging you about grandchildren yet?"
"she mentions it every time i talk to her." she smiled. "but we haven't even had the talk about children yet."
"and we've been married for 5 days. should've been discussed by now, right?"
"yes. but how about we wait until after the reception to discuss it? that way we're not incredibly late to our own party."
"okay. fair enough." quinn grinned and grabbed her hand, carefully whisking her downstairs to join the guests.
they went around the room and listened to a bunch of their friends congratulating them and a few family members giving them some wise advice.
by the time ellen had brought out the cake, everyone had said their words to y/n & quinn. the only thing they had left to do was eat the cake and have more fun than they were already having.
when the party had come to an end, y/n was happier than she had been in a long time. the hughes family was to thank for it.
quinn shut the door after the last guest left and turned to y/n. "now what?"
"well i was gonna help your mom-"
"nonsense, sweetie. you and quinn go enjoy yourselves." ellen appeared from the kitchen with a dish towel in her hand. "i got the boys helping me."
"thanks mom." y/n smiled and went up the stairs. she missed the look ellen gave to quinn as he made his way up behind her.
when they were finally alone again, they were both on the bed when quinn turned to look at y/n. she faced him and smiled.
"today was a success." she grinned. "i never want it to end."
"you're coming back to vancouver with me, right?"
"of course, quinn. how could i not join my husband in the city he calls home?"
"i am never going to get tired of hearing you call me your husband." he placed a kiss on her forehead and smirked. "i'm also never going to get tired of being your husband."
"that makes two of us." y/n returned the smile he gave her. "i'm really glad your family likes me."
"they love you. and very right to do so. if anyone had hated you, i would've said goodbye to them."
"no you wouldn't have."
"you're right but i don't want to hear anyone hating you for no reason at all. you're perfect."
"you're perfect too, quinn." y/n gazed lovingly at him. "and i thought it was pretty sexy when you were having fun with the children early. got me thinking."
"oh yeah? what about?"
"how good of a father you'd be & how cute your kids would be."
"if you think my kids would be cute on their own, then our kids would be genetically gifted & all the other kids would be jealous that our kid would be superior."
"okay, quinn. calm down a little bit." y/n smiled and pecked his cheek. "do you want to have kids?"
"i never really thought about it but now that i have you, i really think i do. especially with you. nobody else."
"sounds perfect." y/n turned to look out the window. "wanna go out on the boat?"
"really? it's kind of dark to go swimming....OH!" it took him a second to process what she was suggesting but when the words finally registered in his brain, he shot off the bed and grabbed her hand.
they were in the middle of the lake in no time. y/n was straddling quinn's lap while he placed kisses all over her neck. the soft moans that were falling from her mouth were letting quinn know he was doing a good job.
breathlessly, he pulled away from her neck and smiled.
"you're so perfect." he gripped her thighs gently and flipped them around so her back was flat against the seat. y/n pulled him down and attached her lips to his before he could speak again.
----------
the sun was beginning to rise when quinn and y/n were getting ready to head back to the house. y/n couldn't help but stare at quinn as he drove the boat back.
she truly loved him and she couldn't believe it took her this long to realize it.
as quinn parked the boat back at the dock, y/n snapped out of her trance and helped him anchor it to the post.
they walked up to the house and entered it slowly, being careful not to make any noise as they climbed the stairs and made their way to quinn's room.
"think anyone noticed we were gone all night?" y/n smiled as the two of them collapsed on the bed. she looked at quinn and he shook his head.
"i highly doubt it. they're all a bunch of heavy ass sleepers."
"good to know." y/n smirked. "when do you think everyone's gonna wake up?"
"hmmmm...." quinn glanced at the alarm clock on the nightstand. "jack usually wakes up around 6:30 so he'll be up real soon. why? what did you have in mind?"
"wanted to test just how heavy your family actually slept."
"we just got back from a night of doing that. aren't you tired?" he chuckled.
"no. not even close, my love." y/n leaned over and kissed quinn. "who could be tired around you?"
"you'd be surprised." quinn smiled and lowered his voice when he heard movement in the hallway. "sounds like jack is up."
"oh darn." y/n smiled and watched the shadow pass underneath the door. "can't believe i loved him when you were right in front of me the entire time."
"yeah. what were you thinking?" quinn chuckled and started to tickle her. as she giggled, quinn couldn't help but fall more in love with her. she was absolutely perfect and he was glad she was his. he couldn't wait to start a family with her.

sun burns
prompt- Rubbing aloe on a sunburn.
She shook her head from where she was spread out on the boat lying next to Ellen as they watched the boys mess around on the boat and in the water.
She had told Jack many times through out the day to put sunscreen on knowing how easily Jack sunburns and he will complain for a long time about his sunburn, she tried to prevent that by telling him to put sunscreen on but Jack did not listen.
She could see from across the boat how his shoulders, ears and the tip of his nose already turning pink.
“That boy never listens.” Ellen shook her head noticing Jack is turning pink as well, Ellen saw how many times Jack’s lovely girlfriend tried to get Jack to put sunscreen on but he did not.
“Oh i know.” She laughed agreeing with Ellen knowing how much Jack hates listening.
Luke yawned feeling extremely tired from how many times he was on the wakeboard the past few hours and walked over to his mom and hopefully his future sister, he plopped on the seat next to her and rested his head on her shoulder.
“At least one of them listen.” She laughed telling Ellen, Luke had listened and out sunscreen on and now is obviously just tanned and not at all sunburned. Quinn half listened but didn’t put any on his face and now his cheeks and nose were turning pink.
“Barley.” Ellen laughed looking at her son and future daughter in law fondly watching as Luke began falling asleep on her.
She smiled back at Ellen before shifting her head and resting her head on top of Luke closing her eyes feeling extremely tired from being out in the sun.
Jack and Quinn finally finished messing around on the water and both got back on the boat grabbing their towels.
Quinn plopped down next to his mom smiling seeing the two passed out next to each other, “They’ve been sleeing for awhile?” Quinn asked curiously wondering where Luke had gone. Ellen nodded to Quinn’s question.
Jack smiled slightly seeing his girlfriend sleeping so cutely with Luke but then frowned wishing he could nap with her.
Jack leaned down smoothing her hair from her face and pressed a kiss to her forehead before sitting down next to her letting Quinn drive them back to the lake house.
Jack gently lifted up his girlfriend once Quinn docked the boat, he carried her up to the house and to their room, he set her down on their bed letting her continue sleeping as he headed to the bathroom to take a shower.
She yawned waking up rubbing her eyes and realized she was in their bed and knew Jack carried her to bed after she had feel asleep on the boat.
She narrowed her eyes hearing wincing coming from the bathroom and immediately knew what was happening.
“Oh Jacky baby.” She frowned in concern as she saw how sun burned Jack really had gotten from their day on the lake.
“Let me go get aloe.” She pressed a very gentle kiss to his warm cheek and walked out of their room and headed to the kitchen grabbing the bottle of aloe from the fridge.
Ellen saw her grabbing the bottle and shook her head not suprised Jack needed it.
She headed back up the stairs to their room seeing Jack sitting on their bed in just a pair of boxers.
She sat on the bed next to him and poured some aloe on her hand and very gently started rubbing it on his shoulders making him sigh in some relief.
“I’ll listen to you next time.” Jack promised as she rubbed aloe my most of his body. Jack can be stubborn but he has learned that his girlfriend is always right and just has his best interest.
“You won’t.” She smiled softly knowing Jack will always be stubborn but that’s just who he is and she loves him for it.
“Probably not,” Jack chuckled admitting it, “But you are always right.” Jack looked at her softly.
She smiled softly pressing a kiss to his burn nose.

Best Yet | Luke Hughes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: when luke gets the wrong idea of your friendship with ethan you can't help but let your feelings for luke slip.
request: yes/no
warnings: swearing, underage drinking.
word count: 2.53k
authors note: just like that we are back with the regular fics! this one has been staring at me from my inbox for a while now so it felt right to get it done. I know a lot of you guys wanted it to be done in one part but it didn't feel like the vibes meshed well so due to that keep your eyes peeled for part two soon!
part two
Tumblr media
Being Luke’s best friend was the role you had your entire life.
Your moms went to college together so when they learnt they were pregnant at the same time it was of course a matter of destiny. When you were five you moved to Toronto and ended up having Luke a treehouse away from you. Quickly the two of you got known as each others other half as you were never seen too far away from Luke and he the same with you.
Life came at you both quickly as you ended up forever in Luke’s corner and his number one fan who was now watching him almost live out his dreams. Both Quinn and Jack had paved the way for him to become the third Hughes brother in the NHL and Luke wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass him by.
Draft day was finally upon you both and it was suffice to say that Luke was a nervous wreck. You had been in Toronto still after he moved to Michigan.
It was tough on you both having to watch him leave you “I can come visit?” Luke’s proposal was honestly there to make him feel better too as tears formed in his eyes “you better.” You nodded pulling him into a hug as tears streamed down your face. Ellen and your mom couldn’t help but feel bad about separating you two as it now meant you were no longer y/n and Luke who do everything together. You were now going to have to be y/n and Luke who only see each other twice a year “I’ll text you when I land.” Luke offered making you nod “no you better call me!” To the untrained eye they would think you two had never left each others sides. But you had, and the two months he spent in Michigan over the summer two years ago were total hell for the both of you.
Jack and Quinn couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of their younger brother “dude you’ll see her in December!” Plans had already been made for you to spend Christmas with the Hughes family but not even that felt like enough “now move over and let us hug her.” Jack nodded in agreement as he ruffled his hand through your hair making you groan.
But life had found itself getting in the way of your friendship when you were in Greece the same summer of the draft. Luke was crushed when he realised that you weren’t meant to be back until the week after the draft “Luke honey could you get the door please?” Ellen called out as she heard the knock. With the pandemic it meant the draft was happening from peoples homes “why should I have to?” Luke groaned getting up as he saw that Quinn and Jack were both closer to the door.
Yet when Ellen sent her son an unimpressed look Luke knew that he was best to go and see what was up “yes I’m coming!” Luke complained rolling his eyes until he froze upon opening the door.
There you were with a golden tan that he was certain you got whilst in Europe “surprise?” You smiled bringing your hands up as you shrugged “what are you doing here?” Luke asked as he rubbed his eyes trying to see if he was dreaming or not as he looked at you “you really thought I’d let you get drafted without me here?” You laughed as you shook your head.
What you two didn’t notice was that Jack and Quinn were watching “just hug her you idiot!” Jack groaned as he rolled his eyes waiting to see you hug his brother. Luke didn’t wait for another second as he pulled you into a hug where he continued kissing your head like if he didn’t you would disappear.
The point was that through everything, even the draft, you were there. Even when you were both applying to university you were together.
It was a warm morning when you and Luke hopped onto a FaceTime call “you got your college?” You asked tucking your hair behind your ears as you smiled looking at him. You were in one of his old sweaters as you bounced your legs waiting for him to answer “yep.” He nodded shutting his door as you two agreed to only tell each other about your university applications until you accepted one.
Your moms agreed that it might sway your decisions about where you were going to go if you each knew what the other was doing “promise you wont get sad if I’m not at your college?” You teased making him scoff “I made peace with you not coming to Michigan months ago.” Luke rolled his eyes as your face dropped.
When you didn’t respond it made him raise his eyebrows “you didn’t apply to Michigan did you?” He blinked as you nodded “Umich.” You really didn’t remember the last time that Luke cheered the way that he did hearing you say that “me too!” It was one of those moments that you two seriously wished you were together so you could celebrate this.
Everyone laughed upon hearing the news that you and Luke were finally going to be back together. You were happy to have him back in your life sure. It was great having him back to only being a couple of minutes away from you. But what you never could have taken into account was that you would develop feelings for him.
Sure everyone predicted that it would eventually happen. Even Jack and Quinn were smart enough to know that this was on the cards for you and their brother. But not even having it in big bright letters would have made you believe it. Lo and behold though you were in the midst of watching your love grow strained as Luke found himself trying to get with other girls.
Every party came with Luke flirting with a new girl as he fully lived out his time as a college boy. It was clear he never wanted to settle down. With each new girl who took his attention it only seemed to land up with you hurt. And to top it all off Luke couldn’t even bother to pick up on it “you deserve better peach.” Ethan sighed as he pushed off of the wall to see you quietly nursing a beer.
It made you stare at the ground as you shook your head “doesn’t matter when it’s not what I want.” You had turned down every guy who looked at you since April of your freshman year. You thought that if you showed Luke that you wanted him then maybe, just maybe he would want you too “maybe you’re looking in the wrong place.” Ethan shrugged wanting you to see that you were wanted by someone who was right in front of you.
But as Luke’s laughter echoed in your ears you couldn’t help but shake your head “this is stupid.” You chewed at the inside of your cheek “I’m gonna go.” Ethan watched as you went to leave “let’s to do something tomorrow.” His offer made a smile form of your face.
You nodded as he squeezed your shoulder “I’ll text you the details then.” Ethan announced as if he didn’t already have something planned for his time with you.
The boys were leaving for Tampa the next day so of course the moment the final skate ended Luke was back in your dorm as he sat on your bed helping you get ready for this date. All of the dresses in your closet weren’t worthy as Luke stayed stolen for way too long before muttering something along the lines of “it’s okay.” Before he would point out something he didn’t like about it “since when do you dislike my entire closet?” You scoffed as Luke bought you two of the dresses that he had turned down.
Luke felt bile rise into his throat as he shook his head remembering how the last two hugged your body in all of the right places. It looked a little too good on you for Luke to even consider letting you wear it. If it was up to Luke he would have burnt the red satin fabric so nothing could see you in it again “why do you even care about looking good for Ethan?” Last night when he got back to the house Luke was less than impressed to hear about how Ethan was taking his best friend out.
The one and only rule Luke made the team agree to was that you were meant to be off limits. It had always been the rule amongst his teammates as Luke knew what some guys were like and you deserved better than that “I want to look good for myself.” You corrected him as you had been raised on the idea that dressing up for yourself meant more than dressing up for a guy who didn’t want you.
You hated how quiet Luke was as he sat cross legged on your bed with your duck plushy on his lap. Quacky was something he won for you when you guys were seven at the town fair. Quinn joked that it was your guys’ first chance at being parents to your child. At the time it was something that you brushed off as the sheer thought of becoming a mom especially to Luke’s kids. It actually made you laugh when you looked back on it, going from thinking that the boy had cooties to now having your world revolve around him had you feeling sick.
As you stared at Quacky, Luke couldn’t help but let his mind come out in the form of word vomit “if I didn’t know any better I’d say you like Ethan.” Luke teased watching the color drain from your face. It was the way that the smug look sat perched proudly on his face yet in actuality he was so far away from the truth that you almost wanted to laugh “not him.” You shook your head raking your fingers through your hair.
That answer made Luke feel sick as he raised his eyebrows trying to mask his surprise “is it Luca?” It was clear that the Fantilli boy had always had a thing for you from the moment he met you. The way he left himself tongue tied after most attempts to talk to you had everyone laughing in amusement as they teased him, well everyone but you did and Luke thought he finally knew the reason behind it.
You couldn’t help but pinch the bridge of your nose “Rutger is a guy that could be your type too.” Luke thought aloud as he nodded to himself remembering the times you went for tall blonde guys “no god dammit!” You snapped finally hitting your palm flat against your table as you rolled your eyes. You had to chew at the inside of your cheek in an effort to stop the tears from rolling in.
Part of you refused to let Luke see you like that and the other part of you knew you wouldn’t have enough time to fix your makeup. Once you let your floodgates open you knew they weren’t going to shut.
An irritated laugh left your lips as Luke clearly scanned your face as he grew concerned by your outbreak "you're the one I like!" You blurted out for the first time in your life leaving Luke absolutely speechless. It was crazy how five words could do that to someone you have known your entire life, the one person who is meant to know you better than you know yourself is left with their lips sealed shut and their eyes wide. As if that wasn't meant to bring you comfort already you instead opted to dig the hole you were forming around yourself deeper "which I don't know why I am telling you because it's not like you have even noticed it as you've got your head shoved so far up these girls asses that I'm pretty sure you could see the light of day if you looked hard enough." The efforts you made to not cry were officially thrown out of the window as you raised the back of your hand to wipe your cheek.
Still Luke didn't know what to say, honestly a little surprised that you felt so strongly about the girls he saw "which kills me because you really are a great guy but you aren't letting anyone, even yourself see it anymore!" You were going through an emotional roller coaster similar to grief as you now found yourself getting angry "Ethan saw that I was upset at the party and he said we should go out." Your words finally made sense to him as Luke finally found comfort in the fact that you were going out with one of his best friends in just under thirty minutes.
Your fists clenched as the boy remained silent now staring at the floor as he processed your confession making the room feel heavy "would you just say something please?" You begged as you went to touch his shoulder but the boy was quicker as he pulled away "I-I-I need to think." Luke shook his head as he got up, his ears were ringing and his skull felt like it was closing in on his brain. He was waiting for you to say that this was some kind of sick prank, some kind of joke. Like the YouTube videos where someone jumps out of the bushes with a camera, they reveal that it was all just some big setup.
But as tears streamed down your face and your lip began to quiver Luke felt the pit form in his stomach as reality sunk in. You were in love with him "I'm sorry." Luke didn't know what he was meant to say as he pushed past you when he went for the door of your dorm. He didn't dare look back as he could feel the sound of your sobs attack his heartstrings. Through your blurred vision, you reached for your phone when you collapsed onto the floor needing to call someone, literally anyone to talk to you. But in that moment you knew there was only one person that you could have spoken to "Ethan?" It wasn't clear why you were so hurt by this. You had prepared yourself for rejection as you knew you weren't Luke's type.
Yet even as you had done that, it still wasn't enough. That day Luke hadn't rejected you, but he also didn't tell you he felt the same way. It left you feeling like you were in this awful state of limbo going back and forth between the two options. But not even four days on, Luke no longer needed to tell you how he felt.
The radio silence and the message that you had to get from one of his brothers sealed his feelings towards you practically on the dotted line.

A long time coming—
Request: Luke has been in love with jacks best friend since childhood, but the reader never lets anything happen out of respect for Jack but eventually the two have a moment and she can’t hide her feelings for Luke anymore, and I think Jack would be supportive of his two favourite people
I changed the prompt a bit cause I read it wrong, so sorry abt that!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Luke we can’t,” she said in between kisses, her hands that had once been tangled in his curls now lightly pushed him away from her, “we can’t do this to him,” she mumbled as Luke shook his head in denial. “He doesn’t care, he’s understanding, and he’ll get over it,” his lips travelled down her neck as she groaned into his shoulder, his fingers digging into the soft skin of her torso as she let out shallow breaths.
The little voice in the back of her head kept repeating the same words to her, whispers about Jack being disappointed in her decisions made her tense and finally take a step away from the Hughes boy whose hands sat comfortably on her hips.
“I can’t,” she whispered. "Wait Y/n/n," he said as her hand went for the doorknob, "let's just talk about it," she shook her head and looked at him once more as the tears started and she left the quiet of the locked bathroom and ventured back into the party to find her friends to take her home.
That had been four months ago at a St Patrick’s Day party, it was now the end of June and Y/n and Luke had yet to talk about what happened.
Luke left for Jersey, and Y/n stayed in Ann Arbor to finish out her third year at Umich, so life got busy. They made it through playoff runs, final exams, injuries, and so many other bumps in the road, and finally, it was the Hughes brothers and company’s favourite time of the year.
Summer at the lake house.
Summers with the Hughes’ were always like an escape from reality, days on the lake, sun tans, sand, and beer, it was always so chalked full of life. Four months of being with the best people, at the greatest time of the year.
But she was dreading this particular summer.
“You seem down Missy,” Ellen hugged the girl as Y/n placed the last bag of groceries on the kitchen counter. The girl shrugged, “just tired, that’s all” the girl said as Ellen rubbed her back and nodded. “Well I’m sure the boys wouldn’t mind if you napped for a bit,” she ushered out to Jack, Luke, Trevor, and Alex who were playing ping pong in the backyard.
Y/n nodded with a sad smile and headed up to her room, flopping down on the soft mattress as she let the weight lift off of her shoulders for a second.
A light knock on the door woke her up from her nap, she groggily sat up and looked at Luke who was smiling at her, leaning up against her door frame, “Did you know you snore?” She stared at him with not a trace of amusement, “No I don’t.” “No you don’t,” he confessed as the girl stretched her tired limbs, “Mom told me to tell you that dinner is ready whenever you are,” he said with a nod and then headed back downstairs to get a plate without another word.
She got down to the bottom of the stairs to be whisked off into a conversation with Z, loud laughter erupting from Jim as Trevor poked fun at Luke for something. The girl sat in between Quinn and Josh who both picked at her for her bedhead, too which gained each of them a smack followed by no more pestering as she ate her burger and salad in peace.
Her eyes travelled over to Luke who was already staring at her, then to Jack who was watching the tension unfold. His brow quirked at her gaze immediately stared down at her plate.
To Y/n the idea of loving Luke, romantically, was something she never seemed to be able to shake. Nothing had ever erupted between the two of them except for that one kiss months ago in a random bathroom that smelled like beer and sex. Thinking back now, everything about that moment felt perfect to her. She would give up pretty much anything to go back to that night and live out her fantasy of finally giving in to the overwhelming urge, maybe even the need, to love Luke.
She’d give up anything, anything but Jack.
She stood in the kitchen, hands buried in the warm soapy water, as she scrubbed the dinner plates that the boys had so graciously dropped off at the sink for her to clean.
Jack walked in with a grin on his face, "You need to stop moping, you're making me depressed Missy," he grinned as she looked at him unamused by the nickname, even more, displeased by the poking he did to her side as he taunted her mood.
"Y'know a little birdy told me something about a kiss, and I think that's why you might be a little tense," she looked at Jack wide-eyed, her lips parted. "I'm so sorry Jack, it was once, and it was a mistake that never should've happened," she began to ramble as the boy smugly grinned at her. He placed his hand over her mouth to shut her up, "a mistake that you wanna do again?" he grinned as her cheeks heated up.
"I never wanted to upset you or break your trust, it was only once," she continued her rant as Jack laughed dryly at her panic. "I don't care Y/n/n, Lu's been crazy about me since we were kids, and I'd much rather you date him than the other douchebags you normally go after," he smiled as her face dropped. "I do not have bad taste in men," she gawked as he looked at her unconvinced.
Jack grinned one last time, "All I'm saying is that it's a win-win situation for me and you, you get the boy, and I'd get to see you more often in Jersey," he leaned against the counter as she stared at him, unable to tell if he was being serious or playing some sick joke on her. "I get the boy?" "You can have the boy," he nods, "but if he hurts you, you tell me and I'll set him straight," he said leaning forward to pull her into a hug and pressing a kiss to her temple as she smiled into his shirt.
"You're sure it's okay?" she said, her words muffled into his shirt as he nodded. He pulled away with a smile, "I approve," she grinned back as he headed back to the rec room where the rest of the boys were playing pool.
Luke walked in shortly after, quietly with a soft smile on his face as he picked up the dry cloth to help take a little bit of the workload off of her.
"You okay Y/n?" he asked as she looked at him with an unsure look, her hands still in the sink trying to finish the still never-ending pile of dishes. "You told your brother?" she whispered and looked at him her attention falling on a strand of hair that had fallen out from its place behind her ear and into her eye. Luke reached forward to brush the hair out of her face as he smiled sweetly, "I did," he said almost sweetly as he held her face in his hands.
"What did he say to you sweets?" he asked with a grin as she looked at him with something resembling love. She blushed at the nickname as chills ran up her spine due to the soothing feeling of his thumb running over her cheek, "well he said that he was okay with this," she motioned between the two of them as he grinned even wider. "I told you he would be understanding," he lowered himself down to capture her lips in a slow kiss, the hands that were previously in the soapy water were now gripping at the cotton material of his sweater as he pulled her closer.
She was the first to pull away, as a smile took over her face while recalling another thing that Jack had said during their conversation, "Jack said another thing that caught me off guard." A short hum left the boy's mouth as he chased her lips, pecking her once before noticing the pleased grin on her face, "what did he say?"
The boy's brows furrowed as she let out a short laugh, "he might've dropped that you've been 'crazy about me since we were little'" she quoted as Luke's face broke out into a bright shade of pink. "I might've been," he mused as she grinned and stood on her tiptoes while her arms looped around his neck. "Good, 'cause I might been a little crazy about you too," she whispered before smashing her lips back onto his, the dishes long forgotten as they stood in the lake house kitchen surrounded by love.
Both of them realizing that this romance had been a long time coming

Kiss it better | Jack Hughes x Reader
Tumblr media
︵‿︵‿୨♡୧‿︵‿︵
Warning: smut, language, surgery?
Summary: Jack demands you cook him a lunch after his surgery, but he’s supposed to be healed. As the “best” girlfriend in the world you fix up a salad and share with Jack. Jack decides he wants more to eat, but not food.
A:N- AGH first time writing for a summer blurb!! Also it’s really short bc I had lots of hw recently!! (Sorry!)
. . • ☆ . ° .• °:. *₊ ° . ☆
It’s off season. Jack and I are in Michigan, Jack has been watching Quinn play, and I’ve been tanning. I called Luke to check in and he said that it’s been stressful, playing with older guys, specially ones who’ve played in worlds before.
“Baby?” Jack hollers for me.
“Coming!” I reply, I throw my Jean shorts from American Eagle in the clean pile of clothes I’ve gathered, and run upstairs. Jack and I live in the basement, and Jack likes to spend his time upstairs on the main floor watching the TV.
Normally the guys spend time downstairs playing pool, and I watch Dance Moms on the TV next to the pool table. Jack is doing well with his recovery after his surgery.
“I’m hungry, I know. It’s a lot to ask for but could you make me some avocado toast with chicken parm salad?” Jack seems like he’s on his monthly period cravings. I mean it sounds good.
“Of course, only if you help me.” I say, and Jack throws his gaming controller to his blanket on the side. He gets up, rolls his shoulders out and cracks his neck. He stands behind me when I been down to grab the chicken.
I stand up and see him towering over me. I lean in for a kiss after setting down the ingredients. I pull back to grab a bowl from a cabinet, I pull out a fork to distract myself from the man that stares at me like I’m the only girl in the world.
“You’re so cute.” Jack says, disrupting the noise of tension between us. “I know.” I say giving him a stare. Right now we’re home alone, but I’m sure Ellen and Jim are heading back from Target.
“Mom will be home soon.” Jack says. I’m sure he’s inferring that we need to hurry up if we’re gonna do stuff.
I make it known I feel the same, but before I can say anything to stop me from going in for more kisses, Ellen walks in from the garage door.
“Hey mama bear!” I rant out, I push Jack away. I pour the lettuce into the bowl and stir in a salad dressing I made last night. I cut in boiled eggs from last night and stuff them in the salad, I microwave the chicken, just because I didn’t feel like cooking. I chop the warmed meat and lose the chicken into the bowl. Done!
“Here, your salad.” I saw shoving the bowl into Jacks reach. I toasted up some toast and slice the avocados. I grab some seasoning and seasoned the toast, I spread some avocados and took a bite of my work, delicious. I hand the rest to Jack and I walk back downstairs to to finish my laundry.
“I’m coming baby.” Jack informs me as he runs down the stairs.
“Yeah you will.” I say as I throw all of my folded clothes off into a hamper, ruining all of my work. Jacks eyes glow when he talks to me, his beard needs to be shaved.
“You look so edible.” Jack says as he pulls me into his arms. Hands in my hips, he slides his head into my neck. My perfume wraps him into my chest, he’s stuck in this love bliss.
“I cant get enough of you. You look so yummy.” Jack whispers into my ear. He licks under my ear, and I feel his hot breath on my cheeks.
gross.
“That’s icky.” I say. I love to make him mad.
“Shut the fuck up.” Jack says as he lets go of me. He sits on our bed and watches me fold the laundry that I threw.
“I cant believe you did that. Y/n I need you, I haven’t felt actually love in forever.” Jack implying on my “turn off” of words.
“Sorry.” I holler back, knowing I don’t fully mean it. His medium toned hair sits right under his ears, he plays with his wristbands as I walk over to him.
“Can you sit back please?” I request. He does as I say, not making me having to push him back, which would have been easier.
I hop onto jacks legs as I straddle him. “You feel so warm. I’m freezing.” I wiggle out of my mouth as I start to rock my hips. I grab into jacks shoulder and start to whisper in his ears.
“Take everything off.” I imply.
“We could take it to the hot tub.” I suggested. “No, wr can start here and end on the boat.” Jack responded within seconds.
“Sure.”
I feed into jacks neck and leave a mark. He’s bruised from my bites. Jack groans intensely as I start to make my way to his cargo shorts. I unzip everything and pull it off.
“You’re already so big.” I let out a sigh and take his boxers off. “Only for you.” Jack caressed my check and pulled my hair behind my ears.
I start jerking him and his head leans all the way back. Jack lifts his hips up when he feels he’s going to cum.
“Are you ready?” He asked me. His eyes glimmering up ast me. I pull down my leggings. I keep my shirt on and I lay on our bed. Jack spreads my legs as he goes down.
“You look wet already.” Jack insisting to start our activity. He pushes two fingers into my hole and he starts to pump. I feel erratic, my moaning screams out.
“Quiet down.” Jack deadly stared at me, and he pushed his tounge down my throat, I moan as he massaged my tounge into his. I feel our saliva mixing. I pushed his fingers farther in and I feel I’m going to cum. He lets go of my mouth.
He takes his fingers out as i jerk up from my release. Jack shoved one finger into his mouth licked it clean, and the other into mine. I suck kn it until he leans into me, I feel his hard cock pressed up against me.
He gets up as we try to finish what we started until we heard, “Jack! Help me clean up the yard! Your shoulder should be fine now!”
Jim and Ellen are having people over and apparently Jack needs to help him fix up the yard.
“We’ll finish later. I promise.” Jack smiled at me as he zips his cargo shorts on and pulled on his shirt. He leaves the room, and up the stairs as I hear him wash his hands upstairs.
I’m left alone in our room and I’m forced to do my laundry.

Cobblestone Love
Hello, everyone! I have just dropped my new fic Cobblestone Love on ao3! Updates will be every Tuesday!
Castiel Novak was raised with only one purpose: to be King. With an arranged marriage between himself and Princess Megan Masters of a neighboring kingdom approaching, he finds himself wanting to spend a night in town, enjoying his freedom before his royal duties catch up to him. Dean Winchester works his farm by day and Ellen's tavern by night trying to make ends meet so he can put his brother, Sam, through medical school. When a mysterious stranger with dark hair and blue eyes, claiming to be a knight for the King, sits down at the bar, Dean's life is forever altered.
You can read a teaser below:
A man plopped down beside Castiel with a nasty leer on his face. “So you’re rich, pretty boy?”
Castiel met the man's gaze, he saw nothing but dishonesty there. “My wealth is of no concern to you.”
“It is when you come parading in here with gold coins fit for the King. I reckon you could spare a few more coins for some poor folk like me.”
Castiel let his expression harden. “And I reckon you think you can take it from me if I don’t give it willingly.”
The man grinned at him, revealing a few missing teeth. “You reckon right.”
A moment later a pair of hands was on the lapels of his shirt and he was being pulled to his feet.
“You stop that this instant!” the barkeep woman shouted. “Put him down!”
“If he can spare you some change then he’s got to have more where that came from. I’m just going to shake him down, see how much more coin he’s got.” Castiel found that amusing, especially since the man threatening him was a great deal shorter than Castiel himself.
“That would be a horrible mistake on your part,” Castiel said.
Castiel had been trained to fight by highly respected knights, he could hold his own in a battle and he was very good with a sword. It was a pity he didn’t bring his sword with him, but he’d opted not to as it would have been a dead give away that he was from royal descent. He would have to win the fight by his own fists instead.
As he was gearing up to get free of the man's grip and send him to the ground, the man was suddenly being ripped away from him. A whiskey rough voice spoke in anger and mockery as Castiel tried to get his wits about him again.
“You really don’t want to do that, Marv. How many times do I have to kick you out of this bar!”
Castiel watched as Marv was shoved roughly through the door by a tall man with light brown hair and an impressive set of bow legs. When he turned around again, Castiel felt his breath steal itself away from him. The man was gorgeous, there was no other word for it. His face was dotted with a fair few freckles and his jawline was sharp and decorated with the thinnest layer of scruff. He was dressed in high riding boots with a tan tunic that was tucked into his brown leather pants. He wore a matching leather vest over his tunic and his sleeves were rolled up to the elbow. This man clearly worked with his hands a lot and by the muscles in his arms and back he looked like he was good at it.
“I’m so sorry about him,” the man said, and there was that perfect voice again.
“It’s no trouble,” Castiel found himself replying, it was a wonder he’d been able to recover his voice.
The man extended his hand. “I’m Dean.”
Castiel took it. Calluses brushed against his skin as his palm slid into Dean’s. It was a warm handshake, he found himself rather enjoying the touch. “I’m-” he paused, he shouldn’t say his name. The purpose of his trip outside of castle walls was to go unrecognized and mingle with the common folk to experience their way of living, so that once he took the throne he’d know how best to help them. No, it was best he didn’t reveal who he was, besides, he was never fond of how once anybody learned his identity they felt the need to drop to their knees and genuflect in the name of the crown. It was rather unsettling and it made Castiel uncomfortable to be the receiver of such respect. “James,” he decided to say. It was his middle name and a common enough name to get him through this moment. “But everyone calls me Jimmy.”
“Well, Jimmy,” Dean said with a smile, “I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of your evening. If Ellen or I can get you anything just say the word.”
Ellen, Castiel took it, was the woman behind the bar. “Thank you very much, Dean.”
Dean’s cheeks pinked slightly in the lantern light. “Don’t mention it.”
Up close, Castiel could see that Dean’s eyes were the most emerald of green, and he could almost picture himself getting lost in those eyes and never having to worry about leading a kingdom or marrying a girl he was not in love with, nor could he ever be. Alas, his daydreams were for naught, and after tonight he was to return to the castle and take his rightful place as King.
He sipped slowly at his mead and let himself slip away into the hum of people around him. He wasn’t eavesdropping, per se, but he couldn’t help but hear what people were saying. A young family to his left, with a weary looking mother and an exasperated father, tended to two young children, a boy and a girl. The children were pretending to fight with sticks they must have picked up from the ground outside. Their parents were trying to stop them from running about, but the children bore no mind.
Head on over to ao3 for the rest :)

J. Hughes - So Fine
Tumblr media
✄————————————
Jack Hughes x Reader
Requested✨
Part two of, Home Alone
Word Count: 3.2k
Warning(s): implied smut, and lying to poor Ellen
—————————————
If I come get you in 5 will you be ready?
JackyBoy… Uh
JackyBoy… Yah
JackyBoy… Why
I’m home alone, and we haven’t seen each other all week.
JackyBoy… Okay. 5 starting now? Or five starting like.. a minute ago when you texted?
Five starting now
Wear swim trunks
My parents were out of town on a brief business trip. A once in a blue moon event that hadn’t happened since Jack and I got together. And considering our last rendezvous didn’t exactly go so well, I was eager to get him alone again.
I left my house in a tank top and a pair of Jean shorts. It was hot out, and as much as I was itching to lay out and tan, I figured alone time with Jack was more important.
When I pulled up into the driveway, I tensed at the sight of Quinn on the front porch with Ellen.
They waved with big smiles, and I decided I’d get out and visit for a moment.
“Hey!” I called as I slipped out of the car.
“Jack said you were coming to pick him up.” Ellen spoke, waving a hand in a gesture for me to join them on the porch. I walked up the few steps and made my way over to the two.
“Yeah. Had some last minute plans. He told me there was no hockey today, so I figured I’d take what I could get.”
“That’s how I feel sometimes. Jimmy steals my boys away for sports and sometimes I have to remind them to give me a hug before they leave.” The woman’s joke caused me to laugh softly. Quinn rolled his eyes, clearly in disagreement with his mother on her confession.
“What are you two getting into today?”
I hated lying to Ellen.
I decided to tell half truths.
“We’re gonna go over to mine. I thought maybe we’d swim for a bit, order takeout and watch a few movies.”
“Parents are home?” Ellen always asked. Even before the incident. I never minded. I understood she had boundaries and concerns. Once upon a time, I never dared to cross those lines.
“Yeah. My mom just got home from work an hour ago.”
“Between you and me, it might help if you get him to lay down for a bit. Jack hasn’t slept well recently, and he’s been a little pissy.” I tried not to smile, but Quinn’s little giggle from the side had certainly amused me.
“A little?” Quinn chimed in so unexpectedly that it caused me to snort out a laugh. Ellen pursed her lips and gave her son a questioning glance.
“Maybe more than a little, but I’m sure he’ll be a ray of sunshine for you.”
“He always is.” I joked softly as the front door opened. Jack stepped out onto the porch in a tank top, the sides practically cut out. I’d seen him wear them on occasions, but really only when I went on the occasional run with him, or when I met him coming back from the gym. I liked the way he looked in them. Especially accompanied by a pair of shorts. I didn’t mind the appearance of Jack’s legs either. His eyes though, those did bother me. The darkness beneath them let me know he’d been having a real issue with sleep. I just didn’t know why.
“Ready?” Jack asked, as if he had been the one waiting on me. I chuckled and nodded.
“Have a nice day, you two!” Ellen called as I grabbed Jack’s hand and walked him off the porch and to my car.
“You too, mom!” Jack shouted back, waving at her.
“You didn’t hug her!” Quinn called playfully, earning a swat on the arm from Ellen. “Makes me her favorite!”
“Quinn!” Ellen scolded.
“At least I’m still her cutest!”
I stifled a laugh at the boys’ banter as I slipped into the car. Jack quickly got into the passenger side.
“Buckle up, Hughes.” I instructed, watching him put on his seat belt, his shirt useless to cover anything as he leaned one way and half of it bunched up to uncover his chest.
“How does your mother let you leave the house like this?” I teased as I reached out to fix his shirt. Jack giggled quietly. “It’s awful revealing.”
“But it’s just you.” The brunette reasoned. I rolled my eyes at him and pulled out of the driveway.
I was thankful I didn’t live far, because Jack was too close to keep my hands off of. We hadn’t seen each other in a week, and for the summer, that was a long time. I practically yanked him out of my vehicle once we got to my place, leading him through the garage and into my uncharacteristically quiet home. No parents shouting and making jokes. No baby sister running about. Just me, and Jack.
“You’re sure they’re not coming home?” Jack asked as he followed me into the kitchen. We both kicked off our shoes in the hall.
“As sure as it gets, Jackson.” I spoke softly as I turned to grab his hands. I walked backwards toward the fridge.
“That’s not my name.” Jack moved one of his hands from my own to gently push me back, in a playful manner.
“Well I need something fuller to call you than just Jack, ya know? And you always throw a fit when I call you Rowden.” I looked up at Jack with an accusing glare.
He huffed.
“Want a water?” I asked as I turned and opened the fridge, pulling out a bottle.
“Yes, please.” I grabbed another bottle and shut the appliance, handing one over to him.
“Figured we could spend some time outside first?” I suggested.
“Don’t have to tell me twice.”
I walked across the kitchen with Jack hot on my heels.
I pushed the sliding glass door open and stepped out onto our back deck, smiling to myself as Jack followed close behind.
“Sometimes I wish we had a pool.” Jack admitted, sounding refreshed at the simple sight of the body of water.
I was swift to set my water down and pull my shirt off, tossing it onto one of the empty lawn chairs.
“Even better, Jack.” I turned to him, adjusting my bathing suit top while he set his own water aside. “Your girlfriend has one. And a house all to herself.”
“Sounds like she’s living the dream.” Jack laughed as I grabbed his shirt and pulled him forward. I raised a brow before peeking down at his exposed chest.
“You don’t wear this around other girls, do you?” I whispered curiously. Somewhat playful, but deep down I did wonder. I didn’t like the idea of other girls staring at him.
“No. No I don’t.” I nodded at his words.
“Okay.” I let him go and stepped back before slipping my shorts off. I tossed them onto the same chair as my shirt. I was quick to remove my socks and toss them aside as well. Then I sat down by the edge of the pool, dipping my feet in the water.
“Jack-“ I was on the verge of calling him over before I heard his loud steps padding against the wood deck. I was barely prepared to see his body fling in the direction of the pool, and I was much too late in shielding my body before it was drenched in the chilly water.
“Jack!” I shouted as laughter erupted from my lips. He surfaced with a toothy grin, his long brown hair all over his face. A mess, even after he tried to push it back. “You got me all wet!” I moved my hair over my shoulders, watching as he made his way over, giggling like he’d just heard the most inappropriate joke.
“You said you wanted to go swimming!” He defended himself, reaching out to grab my legs. I gave him a warning glance.
“I said wear your swim trunks. I didn’t say anything about myself swimming.” I tried to swat his hands away, but Jack kept a tight grip. One that felt rather nice on my calves.
“You’re gonna make me swim all alone?” Jack pushed out his bottom lip in a comedic pout.
“Maybe.” I leaned down to be eye level with him. “I might swim with you if you give me a kiss.” Jack’s eyes lit up before he pressed his lips to mine. He pulled away far too quickly for my liking.
“Is that good enough for you?” Jack asked, trying but failing to contain his smile.
“That one felt off. Just one more.”
The boy sighed and shook his head.
“I don’t know man. Might not be worth all this hassle.” I gasped playfully at his words.
“Jack Rowden Hughes!”
“Hey! I told you I don’t like that!”
“Then get those lips over here and kiss me!” He looked at me with a furrowed brow and a defiant gaze. I looked right back with expectancy in my eyes.
“I’ll wait.” Thankfully I only had to wait two seconds before Jack released the breath he’d been holding and leaned upwards to kiss me again.
Only this time I fell victim to his tricks.
Jack’s arms flew around my body and pulled me into the pool. I clung to him almost immediately, the chill of the water welcomed by my overheating skin, but still a shock nonetheless.
“Jack!” I shouted through laughter, trying to peel myself away from him, to no avail. Jack lifted my legs around his hips and smiled to himself at his own accomplishment.
“That’s all I wanted.” He informed me as he hooked his arms beneath my thighs. I glared down at him and rested my arms on top of his shoulders.
“If I wasn’t so comfy right here I’d swim away.” He took backwards steps toward the middle of the pool as I spoke, seemingly in his own little world. Content just to hold me and have me close.
“No you wouldn’t.” The confidence in his tone would have been unattractive, but the fact of the matter was that he knew me too well. He wasn’t egotistical or cocky. He didn’t think he was ‘all that.’ He simply knew I wouldn’t have left him all alone even if he ticked me off to my wits end.
“Whatever, Hughes.” I rolled my eyes at him and leaned forward to rest my chin against his shoulder. I heard him sigh. My thoughts ran rampant until they settled on a topic, one of my hands gently playing with the long brown hair at the nape of Jack’s neck.
“Your mom says you haven’t been sleeping well.” I broke our silence with a sigh. I moved one of my hands around Jack’s back to gently massage his skin.
“I’m fine.”
“We can take a nap today if you want.”
“I don’t need a nap.”
“Right. I forgot. You’re all grown up now.” I rolled my eyes, pressing a kiss to his neck. I felt Jack’s chest puff slightly with the hitched breath he took. I smirked.
“Can I convince you to take a nap?” My tone changed, slowly lifting my lips to his ear, pressing a gentle kiss to the corner of his jaw.
“We’re in the middle of your back yard.” Jack mumbled in response, his grip tightening on my thighs.
“Completely alone, Jack. The whole house is ours.” I reminded as my lips trailed back down to his neck.
Jack let out a breath somewhere between a sigh and a whine. Like he’d been faced with a difficult decision to make.
I slipped my hand down his back to tuck into the waistband of his swim trunks, and nipped at his neck.
“We can go to my room.” I whispered, “we’ve never done this before and we finally have a chance, Jack.” I wouldn’t push if he declined, but I figured by the way he pushed me against his body, that there was a strong chance he wanted it.
“Okay..” he finally breathed out. “Okay.. okay.”
“C’mon, baby.”
We grabbed towels from the downstairs bathroom after tracking pool water through half of the house. We were in too much of a rush to actually dry off though, so the trek up the steps and to my room was filled with even more dripping water and the occasional sliding foot. Seeing as my parents’ floors were all hard wood. When we got into my room, Jack and I tossed the towels aside and turned to each other. Excited and eager. Up until we made eye contact.
“Oh god.”
“Don’t be nervous.” Jack was quick to close the space between us when he heard the uncertainty in my tone. His hands came up to hold my face. “We don’t have to rush.”
“We’ll do it when it feels right?” I asked, my voice unexpectedly quiet.
“I’ll wait however long until you’re ready. And if you decide you’re not, we won’t do it at all.” My shoulders eased, and I reached out to rest my hands on Jack’s sides.
“I got so lucky.”
“You’re about to get even luckier.”
My laughter was cut off as Jack leaned in to press his lips to my own.
My heartbeat raced when he pulled away, head dipped, but looking up at me through his lashes. Asking for permission to continue on with an act we didn’t know how to navigate.
I nodded.
Did we have a single idea as to what we were doing? Absolutely not. Jack and I just kinda.. went for it? He asked me questions, I was the leading force assuring him he had been fine and was doing okay. He was loud and embarrassed. I was sensitive and un-expecting. I found it amusing to watch him hold his breath to keep quiet. I had to remind him multiple times to actually breathe before he passed out. I’m sure he found it equally as amusing each time he moved and caught me off guard. It wasn’t serious or exactly lustful to the point of meaningless sex. It was full of quiet laughter and the occasional jokes. The type of euphoric giddiness only two people experiencing something so exciting for the first time can hold.
I’d say the only thing that kept us going as long as we had, was the awkwardness killing the mood every so often. And the new feelings. By the time Jack and I got settled side by side in bed, we were both still staring each other down in complete shock.
“That was weird.. wasn’t it?” He whispered.
“A little. But it felt good. Practice makes perfect, ya know?” He nodded. The longer we stared, the wider our smiles got. “We’ve never done that before.”
Jack had one arm tucked beneath his head like a pillow, the other rested carefully on top of my hand that lay between us on the mattress.
“It was good though.. yeah?”
“Yeah.” Our conversation ended with both of us sighing. Jack’s fingers fiddled with my own. We both tried to process the new wave of emotions.
“What do you think we do now?”
He was asking a question I didn’t know the answer to.
“Just lay here?” I paused. “Maybe you should take that nap now.” He looked away, a pout settling on his lips. “Don’t be like that, Jack.” I rolled my eyes with a giggle and swiftly slipped out of my bed. I grabbed a new set of clothes out of my dresser and put them on. A simple pair of shorts and a loose t-shirt.
“You were already exhausted. And you wore me out.” I teased, glancing back at him to see the blush spread across his face.
“Can’t sleep naked.” For a moment, I thought he was joking. I knew for a fact Jack slept with only a pair of boxers on. But then I remembered his were wet. I sighed.
“Fine.” I turned back to my dresser and dug through it to find a pair of gym shorts. Orange, but the only other clean pair I had because I hadn’t done laundry yet. When I turned back to Jack, he immediately shook his head.
“I’m not wearing that.”
“It’s just for a nap, Jack.” I tossed the shorts in his direction.
“They’re so short!”
“It’s not like I haven’t seen everything, now.” I tried to reason, but the recollection of our previous activities had him flushing again.
“It’s the best I can offer, J.” He looked away and told me to turn around. I chuckled at his antics, but I turned nonetheless. When he told me I could join him in bed again, I laughed softly at the sight.
“Are they too tight on your hips?” I asked, climbing into bed beside him. The shorts hung dangerously low, but if they worked, that’s all that mattered.
“It’ll be fine.” He shrugged, reaching down to tuck one of his hands into the waistband. A boyish habit I didn’t understand, but I could only imagine now that it helped him ease the pressure from the waistband two sizes too small on his body.
I rolled onto my side and wrapped an arm around him. Jack smiled, as did I.
“Can we try again when we wake up?”
I had just rested my head on his chest when I lifted it to look up at him. I raised my brow.
“Try what?”
“Ya know..” his voice trailed off, and it took me a moment before I realized what he was asking.
“Oh! Yeah, baby. If you’re up for it. We’ve got all day to figure this thing out. We can even go to the guest bedroom. Probably should have done that in the first place. Considering the bed is bigger.” I reached up to push a few strands of his wavy brown hair from his forehead before I rested my hand against his chest. I traced lazy shapes and lines into his skin, and tossed one of my legs over his own.
“I wish your parents were out more often.”
“Me too, bud.” I heard a yawn slip past his lips, and I smirked to myself before tilting my head upwards to look at him.
“Quit talking so you can sleep, Hughes.”
“Im not tired.” Despite his words, the boy still allowed his eyes to close.
“I know you aren’t,” I whispered as I watched him. Eventually his breathing slowed, and his body didn’t feel as tense. His lips parted slightly and his features smoothed out. I only looked away when I was positive he was asleep. I wasn’t quite as tired as Jack was, but I didn’t want to leave him. It felt wrong to slip away after the step we had taken in our relationship. Perhaps it was more of a leap. I simply wanted to be with him.
So I laid there quietly, occasionally shifting until I found a comfortable spot to lay. Then I dozed off to the sounds of Jack’s occasional snores.

oh i just know when devils pr finds out about them they start putting all of the pieces together “oh wait- OH KY GOD SO WHEN HE -“ type of thing
and jack’s being nothing short of a diva, refusing to leave until angel calls him and assures him that they’ve made it through customs and once they get their bags, they’re going straight to the arena. also if he’s not there she’s going to be very sad. suddenly, jack’s the one rushing everyone out of the door.
they miss the draft, but they make it just in time for mascot dodgeball which was angel really wanted to see. luke sends his brother a snap of them in the stands with their parents and jack is immediately calling like, “get her down here. i need to see her.”
“but jacky, dodgeball,” she pouts.
and jack has gone almost a month without seeing his girl and he’s ready to rip scotiabank arena to pieces if he can’t get his hands on her, “angel, please.”
and within minutes, angel’s a little too familiar with bowels of another arena. the halls are busy with people from all of the teams and she spots some players. she keeps her fingers in luke’s belt loop as he guides them to wherever jack had directed and as soon as she spots her other two boys, it’s over.
she’s darting down the hall and into jack’s open arms, wrapping her legs around his waist and squealing when he spins her around, “i told you i wouldn’t miss this for the world.”
“and i didn’t doubt you,” he mumbles, pressing a quick kiss to her lips. quinn’s quick to break off from his conversation with petey and join their little group, leaning over his brother’s shoulder to place a quick peck to her jaw, “you’re staying with me.”
“i don’t think i can, jacky. i’m fine sitting with ellen and jim,” she taps his shoulder to be let down and he surprisingly obliges. she quickly moves into quinn’s arms and grin’s up at him, “you look good.”
“so do you,” his fingers ghost over the tan line her bikinis had left behind and her cheeks burn.
“i think you can- beth, she can stay right? get her a pass!” jack calls out and the pr person who had been tasked with following them is standing behind them, mouth slightly ajar as she tries to compute everything she had just been forced to witness.
