When Tyler and I first moved in together back in August, I wanted to draw a family portrait of us and our cat, Sullivan. Unfortunately, between the move and my nightjob becoming quite busy, I was unable to find the time. Then, Sullivan suddenly fell ill and left us in November. For weeks I drove home from work thinking about that portrait, wondering if it was too late. But then I figured it might be nice to make family portraits for both of the cats I’ve had, as a little dedication. It felt nice to visit with both of my cats again. I got to capture what I love about both of them!

Elliott liked being held upside down like a baby, and he’d stroke my cheek with his paw. He had a squeaky meow and a tendency to get up on my piano while I practiced. He liked the smell of strawberries, and would nuzzle up to anything that smelled like them. Oddly enough, he loved curling up next to the vacuum cleaner, and batting tennis balls around the house.

Sullivan was a snuggle bug -- literally climbing into my arms at the shelter and rubbing my face, and loved being held. When I came home from work, he would wake up, stretch out of his cat tree cubby, and climb onto my shoulders -- whether I was ready for it or not. We would both walk around our home with him on our shoulders. He’d also curl up between us at night. He had a little black heart on his back toe beans. He never figured out where the sound of his mealtime alarm came from.

CHOPPA 2023 - Show Day 2 & Bump-Out

29th September

Today was a little more frustrating than Day 1. The stage crew was missing in action half the time, leaving Shreya to be alone on stage most of the time during soundcheck. Everyone was lounging in the dressing room, and some were tipsy from alcohol. I understand that they were tired and needed rest, but we needed to stage hands to help troubleshoot during soundcheck.

For example, Antiwira's personal TS cables were faulty, so we had to swap them out with ours. There was also an electrical buzzing problem with Eugene and Ming En's DI boxes (which we later found out was due to a power outage in the building), and we had to swap out multiple things to identify the point of failure. Andy, Christoven and Natalies set was also the most elaborate setup among the two days, which meant a lot of stage movement.

These were all "easy" tasks to do, but because of the number and frequency of it, we needed all the help we could get. I had to walk back and forth from the stage to my console multiple times to help out Shreya on stage, which was very inconvenient. Eventually I did go into to the dressing room to call for everyone, but I felt like it shouldn't have been my job to do so, and should have been the production manager's. It would have been better also if Elliott had done consistent time checks to help keep the crew in line.

I also learned from my mistake yesterday, and made sure that the gain staging was healthy. There were no more clipping issues from the submixer, which was used by the second students band ORRA.

Antriwira's set was also a little difficult to mix, because their guitar amp was so loud compared to the sound system. As a result, I barely sent any signal from the guitar amp mic to the mains, and just let it come direct from the stage instead. But the mic still had to be there for it to be recorded.

Bump-Out

Bump-out was fast. Nobody disappeared halfway. Everyone was there to help pack. Some things were still wrongly packed, but that's understandable because cables can be confusing. I was even more grateful for the team during bump-out, because our cooperation and coordination gave each other space to focus on our specialized roles. I could focus on delegating and giving instructions, while Gladys and Shreya could be trusted to put the equipment back correctly into their corresponding flight cases.

t thats a good question hAHa idk growing up ive always loved like ne/il gai/man slashing thru his name so he doesnt see this somehow, anne mccaffrey, douglas adams, tolkien etc etc. i love grand fantasy stories past future whaever that have some humor to them. that rlly craft a world you can visualize n put urself into. i do like more of the classic macabe stuff like poe or ts elliott etc etc but like idk i guess thats for world building persay ? for telling stories shinichiro watanabe & satoshi kon made me rethink how i tell a story & left a super big impact on me so yeah
