in the end i really enjoyed london bc i got to eat some amazing food this is my dumb review of zapote in shoreditch which ill definitely be dragging ruby to when we go to london together next month

beef tartare with roasted bone marrow: amazing. i love beef tartare and this was really nice w plenty of capers. i think the bone marrow had fried chopped garlic on for a crunch which was BEAUTIFUL like the bone marrow was smoky and fatty and it made it so different

grilled corn and anchovy tostada with aged cheddar: crispy crunchy elote vibes, the anchovy in the mayo was really strong which i loved

roasted guinea fowl with peanut mole sauce: star of the fucking show oh my god. ive literally never had anything like that mole?? im gonna think about that mole every single day of my life. the guinea fowl was also great, perfectly cooked with a hoja santa under the skin

pistachio donut and morello cherry jam: even tho we ordered this as the kitchen was closing they said yes and fried these for us. legit the best way to close the night, i just wish the pistachio was more nutty and salty bc the cherries we're sweet as fuck

anyway. im never hanging out with straight women again because it took these two almost 3 hours to get ready and almost not make it before the kitchen closed at 11. the alternative was pizza express and i would have killed someone.

Little Meals on the Aerie, Week of 1/2

I love meal prepping, so I'm going to share what's on our table this week! I pack breakfast and lunch for us to take to work. For dinner, I make ahead nearly all of this to reheat the day of. I don't often get home until 6pm, so I want dinner on the table in fifteen minutes flat!

Considerations this week: I'm at work but the spouse is home. Also, a friend gave us Christmas tamales and I'm *so* here for it.

Breakfast: Croque Monsieur toasts, yogurt, and fruit.

Lunch meal prep for the Spouse: Salad kits and sandwiches. He's on his own. He'll probably eat all the tamales.

Lunch meal prep for me: Chopped apple, pecan, and bleu cheese salad with ham, pickle, and cream cheese grilled cheeses. Leftover roast chicken and veg with parmesan brussels sprouts.

Sunday (vegetarian night): Loaded quesadillas

Monday: Tamales! Adding in some elote corn and tomato rice.

Tuesday: Tamales, taco salads.

Wednesday: Tamales, elote corn, tomato rice. These tamales are so good we're doing it twice.

Thursday: Pizza night

Friday: Dinner out after food shopping

Weekend: We're feral. It's leftovers and snacks all the way.

I wanna hit up good food spots in Chicago, but I've only seen lists that are made by bougie white people. Any recommendations?

These are off the top, so bear with me.

Stay away from White Castle!!! It's not good. Destroys your intestines.

Giordano's ofc. And like, LouMalnati's for substitution. Get a deep dish, obvi.

Harold's Chicken and tell them extra mild sauce because they're stingy.

If not Harold's, then go to JJ's and tell them you want the lemon pepper wings fried hard with mild sauce on the side.

There's a really good pizza place further into the city, they have really good pasta. But for the life of me I can't remember the name, I just know it's under an expressway. (Yes I'm serious)

The Original Pancake House, their omelets are soooo good.

Jerk Hut. Self explanatory.

Portillo's. It's packed. The lines are long, but it's worth it.

Go to any Mom and Pop shop you come across and get some Banana pudding. You're welcome.

Elote, but only from taco trucks. If you get it from an actual shop, it won't taste right.

I would recommend my Godmother's cooking, but you don't really know me, so-

If you like onions, make sure to get the onion rings from Portillo's. If you get them from anywhere else they're gonna be lightskinned and soggy.

I'm just gonna add my favorite sushi spot, Umai.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Pat's favorite cuisine (as well as the only one she really knows how to cook) is Mexican. Street elotes, pork pozole, birria tacos, chiles rellenos, and aguachile are some of her favorite dishes. She enjoys some spice in her food and definitely would have trouble cooking for someone who can't handle spicy food at all (not that she cooks very often, but sometimes the mood strikes her).

In a general sense, food can be a bit of a source of stress for Pat, because she often worries about gaining weight. It's not that she won't ever treat herself, but on the day to day you'll most likely catch her eating salads, or even ordering something nice but otherwise bland at a restaurant, like the smoked salmon with green beans instead of the penne alla vodka she actually wanted.

But when she's feeling really stressed, that's when the greasy food comes in. She'll be craving burgers and pizza and chocolate and, of course, the extra cheesy quesadillas her dad used to make like crazy. Indulging obviously results on more stress as she works out extra hard to make up for it.

As for desserts, her favorites are churros, tiramisù, or just anything chocolate. She doesn't have much of a sweet tooth, but definitely loves chocolate. Mexican hot chocolate is also a staple that she often goes to in colder nights when she's craving comfort and childhood nostalgia.

Another detail to finish off is Pat will rarely refuse food that's offered to her, specially if it's from a different culture/country, unless it's something extremely unusual. She just finds it disrespectful. She's not much of a picky eater at all and enjoys, or at least tolerates, a variety of cuisines.

Three good things:

-It’s Friday and I am not working this weekend! So it’s really the Weekend!!!!

-one of my cohort mates works one day a week at the museum, so I’ve been seeing her all summer, but H hadn’t seen her since getting back into town, so after work at the museum today the three of us all met up and hung out for the first time since 2019 and it was soooo nice and we got to see W’s baby and I’m just 🥰 these two women have gotten me through this program and we’re all back here together to finish now

-I heard a radio ad last week that Dewey’s has an elote pizza on the menu and because I got paid, and could take a route home from W’s that took me by the [redacted] location, E and I decided to get it for dinner tonight and it was very tasty indeed!!
