It’s just a little dive bar down the road from the studio, one where the bartender knows them and always squirrels them away into a darker corner for privacy. The drinks are strong, the music is loud, and the patrons could give a fuck less about the guys stuck at the high top near the bathroom. Sure, it’s not the best seat in the house, nor is it the best bar in town, but it’s removed enough that Eddie never needs to sign an autograph or take a picture. Maybe that’s why the silence feels so comfortable. Or maybe it’s just because it’s silence with Steve. “You know,” Steve starts, breaking the silence and swirling what’s left of his whiskey around the rocks glass in his hand, leaning back as Eddie resists the urge to chase him. “I was thinking about the writer's block… “Mmm,” Eddie hums, silently urging him to continue. “And I’ve heard that sometimes, creative people need a change in scenery to kickstart something new and get the juices like, flowing or whatever.”  “That sounds like something Robin would say,” Eddie grunts into his drink and sits back with a huff. “Because she’s the one who said it,” Steve shrugs. “But I don’t know man, maybe she’s right. Maybe you need to change up your environment for a while. Maybe you could like…” He trails off and Eddie stares, which isn’t a new thing for him by any means. More than once, he’s had to ask Steve to repeat himself because he was too busy staring at his mouth but this time, he stares with purpose. He stares with a purpose because Steve can’t possibly be suggesting what Eddie thinks he’s suggesting.  “Maybe you could go home.”

Or, With Steve at his side, Eddie faces his past to find so much more than inspiration for his next album.

When Eddie died he thought that would be the end. He hadn’t run away this time, Dustin was safe and Eddie could finally rest. However, waking up bloody, torn and alone was not what Eddie would call a good time.

Meeting the literal, invisible manifestation of the Upside Down was also something Eddie could have done without. But to be given the chance to help his friends from the very beginning? Now that was something that Eddie could get behind.

It’s too bad that Eddie wasn’t given the full story of what occurred in 1983, 1984, 1985. That would have probably prevented him from becoming The Party’s Future Cryptid.

A being who somehow always shows up just when needed. No matter what the year. But he can't stay. Eddie isn't human anymore and as such no longer belongs to either world.

It doesn't help that the Upside Down likes to fling him through Time like a sling shot.

Eddie wakes slowly, wading through a murky darkness, trying desperately to claw his way out of its depths. He grasps at little flashes of light, pulls himself toward muffled sounds and murmured voices he can’t quite reach. He’s lost in an abyss, unsure of how he got there or how long he’s spent floating in the vast expanse of nothing, but he knows he has to get out. He knows he was doing something. Something important. Something urgent. He has to get out so he can go back. 

When he finally makes his way back to himself he blinks against a harsh light with a groan, his body heavy and mind foggy. A soft touch on his arm sends his body into overdrive, yanking clumsily away as he tries to get his bearings, mind racing back to the last place he remembers being, blinding pain, soaked in blood, waiting to die and–

Excerpt:

Steve leads them into Eddie’s room, pulls back the blankets, and settles into the mattress with Eddie following closely behind. And sure, they’ve shared a bed before— nights where they’ve been too drunk to know any better, crowded hotel rooms, that first shitty apartment where the roof started to leak and he ended up in Steve’s bed long after it was a necessity— but this feels different.  This time, Steve grabs an extra pillow and tucks it under Eddie’s sore hip for extra support without saying a word and leans back against the pillows behind them. Normally, Eddie would crack some joke and make Steve laugh, roll over on his side to look away from Steve, and deep breathe himself into something that resembles sleep. Usually, he’d just dream about looking at Steve all warm and comfortable in his bed, about leaning into his side or pulling Steve into his. He’s not picky, even in his dreams.  But this is clearly not a normal night. Nothing about the day has been normal; why would this?  Steve smiles, a small almost hesitant thing that plays at his lips as Eddie scooches closer, unclear of how to position himself. He’s not exactly a cuddler by nature just based on lack of opportunity, but Steve answers his unasked question.  “Lift your head,” he instructs, and then Eddie’s neck is resting on Steve’s arm, body tilted slightly by the pillow cushioning his hip so that he’s looking directly at the side of Steve’s temple. He smells like cucumber body wash and some sort of fruity shampoo and Eddie can feel his heart thudding against his sternum.  “Wanna talk about it?” Steve asks, gently playing with his hair, and Eddie cuddles closer because in the dark of his room, he feels like he can.  “Nope,” he responds simply. “You should write about it then,” Steve suggests, his fingers softly scraping against his scalp and if he could purr, Eddie would be doing the most embarrassing thing right now. “Kind of the whole reason we came here, right?”  If Eddie’s being honest, he kind of forgot that part. He’s made some notes, scribbled a bunch of random words and lines in his notepad in the drawer next to his bed, but not much has really come together. Really, he’s just been focused on spending the time with Steve.  “Yeah, maybe I will.” Steve looks over at him, their noses close enough to touch. He’s not going to bring it up, not right now, but Eddie falls asleep still thinking about it.
