emberwood update: 10-26-22

hello hello! I still don't know how to start these things but yeah. firstly, the reaction to the halloween special has been so nice! thank you so much! I fixed a few errors and updated the game, but I still have more to go (and will do so once I have time). Thank you so much for the compliments and all the reactions! My inbox has been backed up super bad so I wasn't able to respond to all the praises, but I saw them all <3 edit: also thank you so much for 1.1k followers! thats wild!

Now that the special is over, my focus is going to be on chapter two. I've had a few people ask me if I have plans to do more specials, and I do but the next special will most likely be a small, birthday special for a certain RO *wink wink*

I think holiday specials/scenario specials will be as intensive as the halloween one, but this one will probably be short and sweet, mostly because I want chapter two out.

I get so many asks about things that are all in chapter two and im just like ahhh, chapter two clears up so many things and it's when the narrative really starts to get moving, but it's also pretty thick with all the details and branching, which is why its taking me a while.

On top of that, I'm updating things on the gameplay side (like the stats and such) which means I have to make sure chapter one is good before I continue, so I'm basically working on all of them at the same time haha

To reiterate what it is I'm doing, I'm:

updating the stat system into a description-type stat system. example here:

I've explained a few times why I'm doing it this way and I found I prefer it over the stat bars (which I hate with a fiery passion).

2. adding rivalry routes for Alex and Dani.

That means instead of going the normal romance route, you will be be in a rival route, where you can choose to encourage that rivalry or try to mend it. Both options will still be romancing the characters, but it's just the different flavors you prefer. (it'll also probably change the speed of the romance, yk yk)

3. adding a new power (electrokinesis).

Yeahhh, MC can now control electricity (and do some other stuff, fun)

4. polishing prose and such + the relationship and character screens.

5. adding more hidden stats for story purposes (it's...a lot)

6. Most likely adding a new "inventory" screen for story reasons, so I'll have to figure out the coding logistics for that.

7. I've also decided that there will be options the characters don't like, and you can get a hit in relationship/friendship stats. It just feels more realistic that way (also helps with the rivalry routes). So the relationship system will change. :)

Also, I'm aware there's a big bug in the prologue (some options do not trigger the conversation with Andrei). I'm aware and I get it a lot, I just haven't fixed it because my files got fucked up but that will be fixed come next update lol.

I still don't know what the rating of the game will be, but as of right now where I'm at in chapter two, it's still PG-13. I will make a formal post if it changes (it most likely will), but as of right now, we're in the clear!

And finally, I will soon be looking for volunteers for beta testing! I'm so bad at catching my own errors and stuff, so it's very much needed for me haha. I'll post a form when I'm a bit deeper into finishing Chapter Two.

There's prob a lot more that I'm missing but I'll mention them as I remember it haha.

OC map 2024!

It was not long ago since Valedale been updated and it shows. Many OCs have moved there.

I have not included OCs from the old map as I didnt have access to the old file and I dont want to jump between multiple posts to get names and photos because that was just too confusing. I have done a google doc list with the Ocs so next update will be easier. But even if I didnt include OCs from the old post, we went from 73 to 95 Ocs, the population is growing.

I will not update this untill a new area been updated or added. But if anyone sees spell mistakes or wrong infomation given for ocs I can edit that. But I will not fix the map pic.

My time has come. Everyone listen as I grant you with the knowledge of all my favorite IFs…

Gotta start strong with Uroboros by @uroboros-if . It’s a fantastic IF with amazing worldbuilding and characters. I could not recommend it enough.

Mind Blind by @mindblindbard is another great recommendation. Honestly it’s one of the IFs that got me interested in actually following the authors and community actively.

The Night Market by @night-market-if. Another one with fantastic worldbuilding and characters - I would recommend a million times if I could.

The Exile by @exilethegame. It’s a classic for a reason! The ROs and worldbuilding literally keep my eyes glued to the page every time I play through it.

Infamous by @infamous-if. I’m usually not a fan of this genre but this IF has me absolutely hooked. It kinda gives me Daisy Jones and the Six vibes (which is a book I absolutely adore).

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Affair of the heart by @doriana-gray-games. One of the BEST IFs I’ve had the honor of reading. It fantastic and a good read even if you aren’t into Sherlock Holmes stories.

Emberwood by @emberwood-if. It’s fantastic - the characters are intriguing, the plot is attention grabbing and it reminds me of the X-men which is a huge plus!

The Voice of Silverking by @lilac-den. Vigilante shit? Robot sidekick/caretaker? Sign me the hell up!

Next in Line by @nextinline-if. Fantastic, wonderful, 10/10, would recommend a million times. It’s a genuinely wonderful story!

Defiled Hearts: The Barbarian by @defiledheartsblog. This is my guilty pleasure read. It has the best “enemies to lovers” I’ve seen in an IF.

Fields of Asphodel by @chrysanthemumgames. Genuinely one of the best pieces of fiction (interactive or not) that I’ve read so far. I’ve spent literal hours playing it every time it updates!

Of course this isn’t all the IFs I read but these are definitely my favs that I keep coming back to!

And it's finally here, the cozy series I've been talking about for ages! I was up till 3 am, sorting out my mods and updating everything that needed to be updated because my game decided that it would be a good idea to update automatically. Backstory: Elise, a once career-driven individual, shifted her focus entirely to creating a nurturing and loving environment for her daughter, Iris, after becoming pregnant. Emberwood Update #1 (9/30/2022)

I guess I'm doing these now? but anyway, hi! I wanted to post a general update because my presence here has started becoming sporadic.

As of right now, I’m officially around 85% done with the Halloween special! I just have to write the platonic route (which is the group date route). When I’m done with that, I’ll do a quick round of editing and will be adding some meat to the solo routes since some scenes left me a bit unsatisfied. I wasn't planning on making the specials a particularly long or complicated affair but ofc...my ambitions always leave me with so much more coding and writing lol but I prefer it that way. I'd rather have to do more and finish with a better piece of work than publish something I'm not proud of.

I'm hoping to release in early October, mostly because I'm traveling later in the month and won't be online. Worst case scenario, it'll release either mid October or right before Halloween.

Just to repeat: this specific special will be free! I do get a few asks about that.

If everything goes well, this will be the first and last piece of bonus content before Chapter 2 releases. HOPEFULLY. I really want to release Chapter 2 before the year ends, but my full time job makes that pretty difficult (I work nine hours—I’m usually tired by the time I’m done haha).

My brain is already running with ideas for a New Years Special and a birthday extra story (since one of the ROs bday is in December)) but Chapter 2 will take priority.

Chapter 2 is looking to be hefty already, but I might trim it down for pacing purposes.

I really really really want to release chapter 2 as soon as possible but it really depends on my free time.

That goes to my third point, with the way chapter 2 is progressing and how many components I'm adding to it, I feel like it won't be feasible for me to publish chapters without getting more eyes on it. There's so much branching, scene changes, choices, variables that publishing with little errors is def not likely hahaha.

When Chapter 2 is close to finishing, I guess I’ll look for beta testers/early readers

It depends on interest, I kind of want a beta reader/tester for each route (+the platonic route).

I created a form just to see if there is interest in being a beta tester.

(I hope the form works I never actually made one before lmao)

This is NOT an application (???) I just want to make sure there is some general interest.

Also, the visual masterpost is still coming haha It has slipped my mind but I will be posting that still!

Anyway, that’s all :) you’ll probably have a guess of how close I am to finishing chapter two once the (possible) beta forms come out (if people are interested), because that’s when I’ll have enough content to justify needing more eyes.

Update (01/14/2023)

My first real update post of 2023, hi! First I do want to apologize again for the delay in...everything. I didn't expect to get so sick to the point where I couldn't really work on Emberwood. I'm actually done with Chapter 2 like actually actually. The reason why I haven't contacted beta testers yet is just I've been so under the weather that the effort of creating a whole discord and stuff just felt like it was taking so much energy out of me.

I am getting better though, so that discord will be created and I will contact beta testers hopefully soon.

If you applied to be a beta tester, so sorry that I've kept you waiting.

To reiterate: Chapter 2 is done. It's at 70k words as of now, which is pretty wild considering the prologue + chapter 1 together is at 25k lol There's nothing I can say about it that I haven't said before, except that I'm pretty happy with it. I can't wait till you guys meet *** he's become my favorite character to write no matter how bad he is lol

I already have the bones for a bonus special (Road tripping with Andrei) for a possible Patreon, but we'll see.

I'm aiming for February for Chapter 2's release, or if there's not a lot of errors and I get beta testing up and running immediately, late January.

update (01/23/2023)

I've sent the demo to beta testers and the first people are officially reading Chapter 2 (let's toast to my literary anxiety and the slight nausea in my stomach!)

Truthfully, I am so glad to soon wash my hands of Chapter 2. As harsh as it sounds, I've been working on it so long I literally have passages memorized. I really want to jump into Chapter 3, but I can't focus on multiple things like other authors do (outlining and writing or writing and outlining). So once this is done, then I'll begin the chapter outline for 3! I think soon I'll do both so chapters can release quicker.

I said I cut multiple things in Chapter 2 for pacing and to avoid shoe-horning so many things at once (which is what I was doing) so Chapter 2 is a character-driven chapter as well as a plot opener. The training scene and the extended scene where you meet head editor Lena Crown has been pushed for Chapter 3 (it just makes more sense, trust me on this). You do meet Lena, but very briefly. It does introduce MC to the plot in a gnarly way so I'm excited for that, as well as readers meeting the antagonist doing antagonist things.

All in all, I'm very happy with this chapter. I feel like I've balanced being introduced to the characters and introducing the plot well, but I trust in my beta testers to give me feedback, so I will leave the final opinion to them! haha

Hopefully, it comes out soon. For now, I'll start answering questions again and going through my inbox. So sorry for ignoring all the asks !

- small update.

I just finished the climax of this chapter...and once I finish two more (admittedly hefty) sequences and then I'm done for chapter two!!

I'm very happy with how the climax turned out. MC and [redacted] discover something gnarly and it's the moment MC realizes that "holy crap what did I get myself into?"

I keep forgetting that technically, your character doesn't know the characters. Even though you guys, the players, know the characters pretty well atp due to how many questions I've answered and all the discussions we've had, MC has only been there less than a day, so it's been fun writing scenes where the MC is trying to feel out the characters and the ROs are pretty [redacted] in response aha.

The best part of this chapter is the movement. I was so happy to get out of the house as if I was the MC themself lol but it was nice to write the town.

I loved being able to sprinkle in the side characters who make more of an appearance (depending on your choices). There's one side character in particular that...well, might be pretty divisive which I'm excited for aha. Some might love them, some might not! Actually, this goes for multiple side characters. The town definitely becomes more of a main character in later chapters.

It was also fun to write the antagonist. He's not a huge part of this chapter (well kind of, depends on perspective) and his presence grows in the later chapters but his small appearance(s) in this one does make me giggle a little lmao

Finally, being able to write the powers!! That's the good stuff, yk? That's what we come here for yeah yeah yeah

I see the finish line...I'm like that fish in that one scene of SpongeBob who drags themselves inside the Krusty Krab looking for help lol

"food...water...atmosphere..."

hi friends, im still a bit under the weather but getting better. I've gotten well enough to work on Emberwood from bed here and there but I'm getting tired after reading one passage lolol (someone help me).

two more scenes and chapter 2 will officially be done :,)

It’s at 53k words as of now. For reference, the prologue and chapter one TOGETHER only makes 20k words, so yeah, this coming update is significant! Chapter 2 adds a lot of new info story wise and character wise and it feels like the true start of Emberwood.

In chapter two, we get things like:

the antagonist coming into the story

Noah/Nora and Eva/Everett joining the story

Lena Crown (and one of of three side characters you meet depending on your choices) joining the story

introduction to the powers and how they’re used (finally)

and more.

After a round of personal editing and fine tuning, I’ll be looking for beta testers to check it out! I said that in my last update but I never realized how much writing goes into writing the same scene six or seven times sorry lol

Hopefully sooner rather than later, there will be more content to the demo (after, like, three months yay!)

This isn’t a proper update, just a casual check in and an explanation of my inactivity on here. I haven’t been answering much questions or doing much because I’ve just been full steam ahead on chapter 2 + real life stuff.

Hopefully my next official update is an official release date for chapter 2.

small update (11/24/2022)

I am almost done with the first draft of chapter two! I knew the coding would be pretty intense but I didn’t realize how branch happy I am. Every time I finish a sequence of dialogue or add in some internal monologue I just want to keep writing more choices and more branching options which makes the story more meaningful and detailed, but a one page scene could be, like, four pages of just coding so I’ve been trying to find a balance of adding what I want but cutting things out that are not exactly needed to progress the story.

On top of that, Chapter 2 is nothing like chapter 1 in the sense that it expands the world into the town of Emberwood and we meet all types of side characters and such. Chapter 1 and the prologue were easier because it felt very contained, but Chapter 2 is when the antagonist comes into the picture and MC is thrown headfirst into the drama of these side characters and the main plot, so I’ve been really careful in making sure every piece is in its rightful place (hence the slow coding). This is a story where, depending on your choices, you may not get all the information or different information, which can make me feel the sense that I’m writing two separate main plots ahaha it’s fun, but a lot of work. (This also explains my inactivity, I’ve just been focusing on writing for now)

I’ve finally implemented the stat system and have fixed the relationship stats and all the bugs in chapter one, and have added a bit more to thicken the scenes. this update will be the last time I touch the prologue and chapter one lol. I am a bit of a perfectionist who is never satisfied soo yeah bad combination. 🫣

Alex’s rival route will be added in chapter two, while Dani’s will probably be chapter 3/4. There’s been a lot of hidden stats added, a lot of overlapping relationship stats and personality changes and such. I’ve been really proud of the work so far! I hope you guys like it !

Because of this, i will likely be looking for beta testers sometime this week or the next :) and they will become the first people to read chapter two, woo!
