wip: emery ostagar fic

The warden woman is doubled over her own sword dry heaving, the mage behind her is shaking so much their stupid feather cap looks ready to fly off, Alistair is frozen, and Emery can feel a dozen more darkspawn staked out behind the stupid door. The fire from the barricades on the first floor might not be following them up the stairs, but the crackle of it is echoing and she can't think past it. 

She forces her breath out through her nose. 

"I'm taking her shield," she says. It's not like the woman is using it. "I open the door. Pop in. They chase me out. You," she points at the mage, "Fire. Freeze, maybe. Alistair and I keep them pinned in the doorway until you can go again. Freeze first, actually, to block the door more. When they push through, we swing."

That seems to drag Alistair back. "Cath."

What? Emery blinks, she can feel her face twitching. Alistair isn't even meeting her eyes. "Their name's Cath." Ah. Forget the twitch, Em reels herself back with yet another breath. It tastes like the blood.

"Cath sparks. You and me keep the darkspawn back. Ready?"

i dont think ive ever mentioned it but emery and irene fucking hate eachother. their personalities clash in the first place but since em brought bethany to the conclave as part of the warden delegation—well. lets hope they complete the questline before reaching the boiling point

excerpt from the emery ostagar fic! some early drafting < guy who cant finish things

Alistair: Duncan said you spoke to the King on the way in?

Jory: You met the king? What an honor!

Daveth: What was he like?

Emery: "… He was," Young, stupid and dangerous for it, a steeled-up warrior– a dozen answers ran through her mind. Her eyes passed over Jory and she finished, "shiny." [trying to call him an attention whore without insulting him. or say hes peacocking?]

Daveth: (laughs.) Could feed a nice dozen families with the ring on his pinkie finger, right? If I'd got my hands on that I'd never steal another trinket in my life.

Emery: He didn't seem like he'd notice if you did. [implying that he's oblivious.]

Alistair: Hey, hey! Warden's don't need to steal either!

Daveth: I did say if!

Alistair: Though you aren't a Warden yet I suppose.

Possibly my favorite part of the dwarf commoner origin is that its the most triumphant from the bunch. For the first half of the origin youre playing gopher, its shown exactly how much the people in Orzammar look down on you, and how little mobility you have (Rica is more optimistic, but even she believes that its a long shot to change anything, even though she KNOWS her sibling is worth it! its the nobles who wont see). Youre under the Beraht's thumb, yes, but youre also under the city's shoe more generally. Half the people in Dust Town recognize you as Beraht's enforcer, half the dialogue in the Commons are people thinking you getting too close would get them "infected" or at least looked down upon—your very existance a taboo. And then you arrive at the Proving Grounds, Duncan greets you with blessings, something not afforded to the casteless, and then you walk into the tournament, beating everyone handily (and in one dialogue option rubbing this in their faces!)! And even when you are caught! when they try to get rid of you for stepping out of your place, you kill the man using you to his own ends! and and Rica is fine and safe and maybe happy! and Duncan is calling you couragous and saying a group that half of Orzammar admires would be blessed to have you! You WON!

And then you get to Ostagar, and you lose everything.

like. the epic highs and lows of highschool football have NOTHING on the commoner to ostagar route! maheriel and tabris and cousland and aeducan are playing bad things happen bingo! amell and surana are on the worlds worst graduation bender! but BROSCA! brosca my BELOVED. the bigger you are the harder you fall!

im thinking im conceptualizing and an interesting fact about emery is. well normally my characters distort their [view of] reality to fuel their self-perception, but Em is distorting her sense of identity(?) to suit her new reality

Alistair not being in DAA makes me skeptical about the success of the relationship. Emery absolutely would not want him gone, and would've tried to get him to stay, which clearly didn't work. Emery could have read this as like. Sort of sporatic answer. But he spent the whole Blight listening her and trusting her and letting her bear the weight of the world, and then the second a higher power appeared left her for it.

Meanwhile Velanna and Emery I think have chemistry and potential but in a kind of… troubling way. For all that I think they could genuinely love eachother it's both complicated and possible because of Velanna's disdain for authority. I also think its interesting to contrast the way Em's potential partners relate to her power. Alistair gave it to her/laid it on her and is explicitly into it while Velanna distrusts her specifically for it.

Emery: You can't cast when you're a spider.

Morrigan: Curious about my skills, Warden? I assure you they're up to par.

Emery: Not what I said.

Morrigan: I suppose not. No, I cannot cast when I'm a spider. I am thus relegated to biting things. Not a terrible fate, even if our enemies are usually less tender than I prefer. Is this where you explain your real question?

Emery: You're making yourself… something you're not. You like your magic. When you change, why wouldn't you keep it?

Morrigan: 'I like my magic,' what a strange way to put it. I do not simply like it, it is inseperable from the rest of me; if I were to cling to any part of it I would not be able to make the change.

Morrigan: For all it's strengths, a spider is not a mage.

Emery: This spider always turns back to one though.

Morrigan: Indeed.
