Shower, like Link is watching?
I don't handle changes to my routines very well, and distractions tend to throw me off. Because of this, not having a regular dose of daily mythicality has put me into this state of brain freeze. At 1 pm (which is the time in my world when GMM and everything else mythical is uploaded) I have this feeling I should be by my phone or tv, ready to watch (or listen) to something. For the duration of the entire holiday hiatus, I've been hovering around YT trying to replace what I need with other stuff, and honestly, it hasn't felt right. Luckily, the first Ear Biscuit of 2020 was posted today, and I'm slowly regaining my routines. And with the new year, I'm seriously intending to return my routine of posting my thoughts about the GMM episodes and Ear Biscuit episodes here on Tumblr. So, here's to new beginnings!
I was a bit sad to hear LTAT wasn't going to be a part of my Saturdays in the new year, but the new Rhett and Link vlog was, at the same time, an exciting new thing to wait for. I loved LTAT, not the least for Stevie's ability to make it a little 🌈 every now and then.
In today's EB, Rhett and Link, after saying they don't need to explain their decisions, pretty extensively explained why LTAT is gone, and they do it well. In a nutshell, it turned too time consuming and labourious to produce, and was too BTS to attract a viewer who is not a devoted fan, and they are aimkng to keep the content on Youtube accessible for all types of viewers, and instead, direct the in-depth, BTS content to the Mythical Society. I understand their decision: content that requires you to be a devoted fan will not get as many views on YT since it won't attract the random viewers, and I can imagine the Youtube algorithm doesn't really help with this. It was a business decision, and since, in the end, Mythical is a business, it is the right decision.
But, what about the new beginning of the Rhett&Link channel, with the new vlog content? What R&L tell us on the podcast is really promising. Firstly, they sound genuinely excited about this new idea, and why wouldn't they - it means they get to film themselves and eachother without the huge production, scripts and crew, and they get an excuse to hang out together outside the set.
The premise is that they'll set out a task to perform, and then film what follows - according to their own words, a bit like Jenna Marbles (please don't shave your eyebrows!). Apparently, the plan for the first vlog is for Rhett to come to Link's house and take a shower in Link's bathroom, while Link watches from the outside (like he pictures his neighbour doing). Now...it sounds a lot like Link just wants to see Rhett take a shower, he sure seems a lot more excited about this than Rhett, but either way, I really look forward to seeing, what is going to happen.
After listening to this Ear biscuit, I'm really eager to get the Mythical year 2020 started. GMM will continue on the familiar track, and focus more on being the daily, entertaining entry-level mythical experience it has become, with the more produced high-quality episodes, and on Saturdays, we'll get to enjoy a more diy, candid Rhett and Link video. Sounds like a good balance to me!

“Thanks, work mom and dad.”
( LTAT 52 )
I bought Denise’s Earth Friendly Da Vinci Watercolor Palette (I’m linking to the lowest price of this set, as the one I bought was the fill & paint pan set and is more expensive haha) in November, and decided to try it out with this piece. This was my first time working with Da Vinci watercolors and I really enjoyed it. I also somehow used each color from the set for this haha
I also used ink for the lineart, white gouache for extra detailing, and metallic paint for the sign c:

The Rehearsal
The long teased on camera kiss was happening. There had been a lot of discussion on the whens and the hows of it. Should they do it on the camping series with Stevie? Should they do a bunch of fake out kisses while camping and then do it on a regular behind the desk episode right after the camping series dropped? Should they do the kiss first and then do the camping series? Should they do it on Good Mythical More so the hard core fans would be the first ones to see it? There were lots of variables, and it was important to get it right.
In the end, they had decided to do it during Pride month, in a main GMM episode, right around the time that the crew would be running the big 5K for the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center. The concept for the episode was a trivia game where there were no winners or losers, highlighting the contributions of LGBTQ individuals throughout history. Not just in things like music, and fashion, but in fields of science and technology, philosophy, all kinds of things. It was a solidly good concept. They would finish the game, say something about the Center and the upcoming 5K, they kiss, they spin the Wheel of Mythicality.
It was a few days before the shoot, and Link seemed nervous and on edge. He and Rhett had talked about it a bit, and it wasn’t that he didn’t want to do the kiss, or that he was worried about their friendship, or their families, or anything like that. He said he was worried about technical things, but had trouble articulating exactly what. They decided to have a rehearsal one evening at the studio after the crew had gone home. After a lot of discussion earlier in the day they had for sure decided they wanted the kiss to be standing up over by where they used to do LTAT rather than behind the desk. Since the premise of the game was really more of a behind the desk sort of thing, the writers weren’t exactly sure what the motivation would be for them to suddenly be standing up, but said not to worry about it. If it was important, they would figure out a way to make it happen.
They were standing in the spot where they planned to do the kiss. They had put chairs out where the cameras would be. They put the wheel where the wheel would be. Once they were satisfied that the scene was set, Rhett turned to Link.
“Ok. So we have camera 1 here, 2 here for close ups, far away cam if we need it will be up there. All good?” Rhett asked.
“Yeah,” Link said pacing around and adjusting the chairs minutely one way then another. “If this is the main camera, then that means we should be standing here and angled like this.” He adjusted his body so that he was in profile to the camera with his feet at a right angle so that his body faced the camera slightly more.
Rhett angled himself to match across from Link, eying the positions and imagining the camera angles. “That should be fine. Do we want to put tape marks down?”
“Not right now,” Link said awkwardly. It seemed like he couldn’t meet Rhett’s eyes and kept sweeping his gaze across the floor and their feet like something still wasn’t quite right. Rhett put a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Hey now. Everything is cool. It’s just me. Ain’t nothing dramatic happening tonight. Tell me what’s bothering you. Was it the camera positions you were mostly concerned about? Do we need to get a real one out instead of these chairs?”
“No,” Link replied. “It’s not that. I’m just overthinking every detail, and it’s kind of embarrassing.”
“Out with it, Neal! Rhett McLaughlin is here to help.”
“What am I supposed to do with my hands?” Link blurted out. “I mean we hug, and it shouldn’t really be that different, right? But do my hands need to be more on your shoulders than they normally would be, am I supposed to touch your hair? Are you supposed to touch my face? Speaking of your hair, is it going to be up or down? How long a kiss are we talking here? We don’t want it to be like a quick peck, so do we count slowly to 5? I know we already talked about that before, I just…” He was spinning out of control fast.
“Man! You really are in your head about this,” Rhett said with sympathy. “That’s too many things to think about at once, right? It’s like shooting a music video. If you think of all the things that need to happen at once, it’s overwhelming. Let’s take it in steps.”
“Right,” Link said taking a deep breath. “Steps. Find the process. One thing at a time.”
“Good,” Rhett said. “Now come here and hug me.”
“I…You..” Link stammered, his hands making tiny helpless windmills in the air.
“Come on! Like you said, it’s not like we don’t hug. Hug your buddy! Let’s start from there,” Rhett prompted spreading his arms in invitation.
Link chuckled about how silly he was being and stepped into the hug. His hands went automatically to the middle of Rhett’s back. It felt fine. Not alien, or awkward, or different than any time they might hug.
“Come on and hug me like you mean it!” Rhett said, giving Link a squeeze and jostling him back and forth a bit. Link laughed in spite of himself and returned the hug with a bit more gusto.
“Alright! Now we just lean back a bit and we are in a perfectly good kissing stance. Are your feet still angled right?” Rhett asked, turning his face to the side and looking down. Both of them had their feet properly angled. “See! We’re pros. We can do this!”
Link chuckled a bit. “Ok. So the hands just sort of go where they would anyway. I’m fine with that.”
“Alright then, let’s talk hair stuff,” Rhett suggested. “Do you want to touch my hair?”
“I don’t know!” Link pleaded. He didn’t try to pull away from the hug though.
“You touch my hair a lot. Remember when you used to cut it back in the day? You’ve cut it, curled it, straightened it, covered it in peanut butter. It’s still just my hair.” Rhett reached up and pulled the ponytail holder out of his hair and shook it out a bit. Link automatically shook his own head in dramatic, somewhat mocking fashion. Rhett chuckled.
“Ok. Just your hair. Not like it’s made of snakes,” Link said, bringing his hands up and sliding them into the hair at the base of Rhett’s neck. His hair is so long these days! He looked at his fingers flexing them a bit. There was more of it than there ever has been, but it was still just Rhett’s hair.
Seeing that Link was fairly comfortable, Rhett slid a hand into Link’s hair as well. Link closed his eyes and leaned into Rhett’s hand ever so slightly. Link brought his hands back down to where they had been on Rhett’s back and focused on the feeling of Rhett’s fingers curling and uncurling gently in his hair.
“Next agenda item, the length and voracity of the kiss,” Rhett stated. “What do you think would be best?”
Link’s eyes flew open and he considered. “I think it does need to be more than just a quick smooch, I think we referred to the tone before as sort of friendly and respectful, but what if when it happens we are all adrenalized? What if it goes wrong? What if I end up kissing you, I don’t know, too much? Not enough?” Link was starting to sound panicky again.
“Let’s establish right now,” Rhett said quietly, “If you don’t want to do this, if it’s too much, it stops here. No guilt or blame, nobody’s going to give you a hard time. Furthermore, if you want to kiss me more than just quick and ‘respectful like’, I hereby consent.” He smiled warm and comforting down at Link, his fingers still lightly working their way through his hair.
“Good. Ok. I’m fine, really,” Link assured. “I’m not backing out, it’s just, it’s the first time, and I want it to be perfect.”
“And what is perfection?” Rhett prompted, giving Link the set up for something he said all the time.
“An illusion,” Link said with a sigh. He was feeling better. This was going to be ok. The girls were fine with it. The kids were fine with it. However it turned out, him and Rhett would be fine. Another shadow flitted across his eyes.
“Anything else?” Rhett asked.
“I guess there is one more thing,” Link began. This was real embarrassing. “I..I’ve never.. I’ve never kissed anybody with a beard before. Do you think the texture will freak me out?”
“I’ll have you know the texture of my beard is perfectly lovely!” Rhett exclaimed in mock outrage. He considered the problem. “But you better go ahead and put your face on it, just to be sure.”
“What?” Link began to pull back.
“Here. I’m going to lean down, you can kiss my cheek, rub your nose in it, whatever you have to do to be comfy with your dear old friend, my beard,” He said with a calm smile.
Rhett leaned down and Link brushed his cheek on the auburn beard he knew so well. Scratchy wasn’t the word. Not soft either exactly, but definitely not painful or unpleasant. He turned his lips into the side of Rhett’s face and lingered a moment, noticing again that Rhett’s hand was still lightly moving around the back of his head, petting his hair.
“It smells nice,” Link said as though in a dream.
“Mythical.com/store,” Rhett chimed in. They both laughed. Link pulled his face back a bit and smiled an untroubled smile up at his friend. He then tucked his head down and snuggled into Rhett’s chest, feeling his heartbeat. That constant, steady beat that had been with him so much of his life. They stood there a long time like that. There was no rush. This was a good idea. They should have done it years ago.

calling out your employee for doing something their other boss has nothing but encouraged, without discussing it separately and privately, is so unprofessional to me. i'm of a different POV where i'm embarrassed that people are defending him or even reveling in that whole outburst. if you've been yelled at by a boss (or called an unfunny lesbian) maybe it reads different. honestly i really don't know why they didn't edit it out?? x to you and your blog, you seemed to not dwell on negatives.
Okay, I’m going to go through this very delicately.
Firstly, Stevie isn’t Link’s employee. She is Chief Creative Officer for Mythical Entertainment. Link isn’t her boss, he is her partner.
Secondly, Link didn’t yell at her. He yelled (if you can even really call it that), at Rhett. He called Rhett out.
They didn’t edit it out because that kind of thing gets clicks. That’s what this is all about, getting people to watch their videos. And sometimes, a grown man throwing a tantrum is going to pull in views. Perhaps not from people like you, but from someone. It’s not wrong for you to not enjoy that kind of thing, and it’s not wrong for other people to enjoy that kind of thing. Entertainment means different things to different people. And that’s okay!
I’m not sure if you’re saying people are calling Stevie an unfunny lesbian, or if you’re saying they’ve said that to you. If it’s the latter, I’m sincerely sorry that has happened to you. That’s an awful thing to say to someone. Personally I think Stevie is great, and I was really sad when LTAT ended because I loved it. I just don’t enjoy her in her role on GMM. And I think it’s perfectly okay for me to say so on my own blog.
And finally, every day is Unfollow Amnesty Day here at Soho-X, I will never hold it against anyone of you need to unfollow me to better curate your experience. It’s important for you to establish your own boundaries and keep yourself safe. I wish you peace. ❤️

I like Stevie, I do. But I feel like ever since they ended LTAT and didn't (maybe they can't rn due to the pandemic?) continue with their vlogs, she talks over them, or is interrupting way too much. And I don't know if it's a 'hey covid made us sideline our vlogs, so let's have her talk more sine LTAT is gone!', but interrupting CONSTANTLY is annoying. No matter who it is Let them at least finish a damn sentence or thought before you ask something! It's common courtesy!
I can’t think of a way this can be related to the vlogs. She wasn't even in the vlogs. LTAT I never cared about, I honestly found it boring. Even Link found it boring on so many occasions, you could see! I don’t think any strategic thinking went behind her talking so much. She just likes attention and has power to do anything she wants in GMM/More.

ok but just after they shot LTAT Link can tell Rhett’s a little put off, and, y’know, that makes sense since he just saw a weird funhouse mirror version of himself right in front of him - Link would be a little put off too. He’s just hoping the cake made up for it and that it wasn’t so weird that it ruined the intention of it - to have fun, to be a funny gift, to try to help Rhett visualize his physical future. But when Link opens the door to the car after work and falls in, Rhett’s gripping the wheel with both hands and staring forward. Not angry. Just tense. Nervous, maybe. Link nudges him with his elbow and raises an eyebrow, a silent, “what gives, man?” The sharp intake of breath and the long sigh afterward tell Link all he needs to know about what this car ride is going to be like. Rhett doesn’t speak until they’re safely on the road, safely away from the crew, safely in a place that Link and, more importantly, Rhett, can’t run. He says, “you know I’m trying, right?” “What?” Rhett glances at him quickly out of the corner of his eye, manages to size him up in a split second, and repeats, “you know I’m trying.” “Trying what?” Another sigh and then, “to meet your ‘friendship emotional needs’.” Link snorts, immediately realises that was probably the incorrect response, then heaves his own sigh. “I know. It was a joke, man. Maybe not the most appropriate one, given your newfound sentimentality, I guess, but...” They’re quiet for another few blocks, getting closer to Link’s house, closer to the end of this conversation, closer to Rhett shutting down again for god knows how long. When he rounds the corner into Link’s neighbourhood, he slows a little before he says, “I just want to be the one you come to.” “Come to for what, Rhett?” He’s kind of getting tired of the mildly cryptic declarations. “Anything. Everything. I don’t just want to be your goofy friend and business partner, Link, I want to be there for you. I want you to put your arm around my shoulder and laugh, and I want you to grab my leg when you get scared watching Hereditary, and I want you to cry at me, if you need to for some reason.” “Sounds like vows, man-” “Yeah, well, maybe it is, in its own way.” They’ve taken the last turn; Link can see his garbage box from here, sitting at the end of his driveway. Rhett doesn’t cut him off very often. Usually the other way around. “I’m just saying, man. I’m trying to be better. I’m trying to be more open. And it’s a little hard, but just-” He turns the car around in the neighbours driveway and pulls in along the curb in front of Link’s house. He shuts the car off. “Just bare with me.” Link’s never imagined ever not baring with Rhett. Actually, he never has to “just bare with” Rhett. It’s not a chore, to be his best friend. But he gets it, kind of. He definitely gets it when Rhett turns to look at him and the first word that comes to Link’s mind is “scared”. Rhett’s scared. Rhett’s scared that now, after all this time, Link is going to run? Just because Rhett has trouble showing his emotions? Link almost laughs, it’s so absurd. Instead, he reaches out and grabs Rhett’s knee, tugs it a little so it hits the centre console, jiggles it around, pats it - he could get used to this - and says, “of course, Rhett. I’ll see you tomorrow.” The little line between Rhett’s eyebrows disappears as the tops of his cheeks round out over his beard. It’s not a smile, not a big one, anyway. But it’s something.

Christy did make Rhett soup that time when he was sick within the past year or so and they make enough suggestive jokes about each-other's wives to hint at the four of them having a pretty comfortable relationship. And then Christy made that "I love Rhett's wood" joke in that LTAT painting episode. All that to say that I think it's easy to focus on what causes drama when the reality may not be nearly that deep.
That’s true!! And there was that time Rhett went on adventure to get Christy cheese and ended up injuring himself in the process.
It is. It’s so easy. They love each other. Period.

Moving in together
So, Rhett and Link rented themselves a house. Let’s talk about that!
I already know there is no way I can keep this post ship-free, so this is a fair warning for all those who are not into nautical themes. It’s the day after Valentine’s, my movie date with my mom and sister last night was as far from romantic as humanly possible, and then I see the latest R&L vlog today, and now I have zero selfcontrol over this. Bear with me.
Tumblr media
First of all, Link is wearing the same hoodie he had on in the LTAT episode, where Stevie told the guys what strangers thought about them, and the consensus was that he is a gay lifestyle blogger who wants to settle down with his man and have a baby.
Tumblr media
Clearly, Link is over the moon excited about this house, and I really hope we’ll get another vlog about the guys decorating the place. It’s empty and echo-y now, but I can imagine a comfy sofa in front of the fireplace, big enough for the two of them to get creative on...
Just imagine these two in a second hand shop, finding the perfect sofa with enough wear and tear to feel instantly comfortable. Rhett wants some carved wood details, and Link insists on testing every alternative by lifting his feet up and curling up like a kitten. A good sofa needs to be snuggly. The shop owner assumes they are a couple, and instead of correcting them, they just grin, because it seems pointless to explain everything to someone they only meet once.
Crap, I got lost in my mind for a second. So, yeah, this is a creative space, for working, writing and getting creative. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
Tumblr media
The kitchen appears to be fit according to non-giant standards. The good thing is Rhett won’t bang his head on the cupboard doors, because he’s above them. My neck hurts by just looking at how low the counter tops are. He should bring his instant pot over, so he doesn’t need to crouch over the stove when he gets hungry. I assume there are going to be some sleepovers in the future - or they could just as well have rented an actual office space, instead of a fully equipped house.
Tumblr media
Let’s get one thing straight: they’re not gay. They are just two best friends renting a creative space to do creative things in, in private. And that is not a euphemism for anything.
Tumblr media
Does Link know what air quotes mean? Calling the first bedroom an “office” isn’t helping their cause at all. He just basically undermined the entire “we’re not gay” moment. And then they spend all that time playing with the closet. This is not how a we’re-not-coming-out video is typically made. Guys, seriously, why?!
Tumblr media
I lost track of the house plan at this point, but there are three bedrooms in this house? Is the Jack-and-Jack bathroom between the two “offices”? No, the middle room is in the middle, duh.  Oh, and Jenna is found behind the last room door. It’s good she’s around to act as a chaperone, because this video needs to stay professional.
After a heated game of...what is that, squash? in the livingroom of the rented house with multiple windows and pristine white walls (which Link wins), Rhett pulls out a shruti box, in order to determine which office / bedroom should go to which guy.  What a beautiful sound that thing makes!
Tumblr media
But hang on - Link’s zipper was definately not open when he won the ball game earlier:
Tumblr media
Now, how did that happen? Why are your glasses fogging up, Link? (Sorry, he looked SO guilty, and his glasses actually did fog up.)
Tumblr media
That shruti box is so cool. I have a bad habit of starting to sing whenever I hear a humming noise (like a microwave oven), but this is just beautiful. They need to make a whole album of singing like this, it would be so cool for meditating. And Link needs to rap more.
While talking about choosing their “offices” here, it turns out that Rhett has the same principle when choosing a room as he does when choosing the side of bed he sleeps on: he goes for the safer option. Link gets the room with more light he originally wanted, while Rhett gets the one in the back. And just to be absolutely sure here, when they talk about the sides they sleep on, it’s with their WIVES.
Tumblr media
To end this exciting vlog, the guys head out to get food - in order to have their first meal in their new house. My European heart is slightly offended by the fact that they go to a restaurant called Wienerschnitzel, which instead of actual Wiener schnitzels, sells hot dogs. But of course they go for wieners, because you know, they are just two male best friends getting food to eat in the house they are moving in, and none of this would be quite gay enough without wieners and corn dogs. Oh, and apparently Link’s neighbour from his real house is at the register. Or is it a different chipmunk?
Tumblr media
But hey, here’s a dink for all the vlogs and creative endeavours to come - and hopefully next time we see this house, it has a snuggly sofa and everything required to get into the creative rhythm they need. Without distractions.

My heart is broken. I get that they want them to stay fun and not be forced, and that was something most of us were wanting too. I just enjoyed the vlogs so much and I feel deeply sad about them not being a regular thing anymore. I like LTAT too but it’s end didn’t upset me so much. I want to cry about the vlogs ending even though I totally understand why and support them. They both look so sad and stressed. I wish we could send them a giant virtual hug. 😭😭😭
Yeah same. But it's kinda impossible to do fun goofy vlogs while in quarantine. I look forward to them so much but more than anything I want them to take care of themselves and not feel pressured to put out vlogs if they feel like an obligation.

The first Rhett and Link video I watched that didn’t really turn me off of them (because their type of content and loud, blaring beginning is really not my usual scene), was the LTAT where the thumnail is “QUIRKY GAY BEST FRIEND?” and Link’s face.  YouTube was like, This is relevant to your interests!!!  I finally broke down and watched it.  It wasn’t particularly relevant to my interests, but the thing that got me was how much more natural and interesting these guys were when they weren’t being loud and doing weird, gross things with “food.”
And the bit where Link seemed hurt that people thought he was gay affected me because I understood that feeling and the defensiveness about it.  I mean taking one look at the way he was sitting, how fancy his hair was, and his gentle and expressive sort of mannerisms, it seemed easy to me that someone might assume he was gay, whether he was or not, and the way he tried to laugh it off but obviously it fucked with his self-esteem, enough that he made a comment about not being the one with the pink jacket!!!  I was like, I understand that emotion on a base level.  The self-consciousness and maybe not being able to (or not wanting to) see what other people might see related to you that makes them think “gaaaay.”  And not really being able to laugh it off even if you want to, because it just always hits a little too close to home, a little too often, and no matter how you try and even when you’re doing everything “right” and not crossing any lines, people see something about you that makes them go “hmm” and it’s obviously not something you can change, even though they’re WRONG OBVIOUSLY OKAY.  I felt a lot of empathy for that.
It also made me think there was more to these guys than the gross-out stuff.  Later when I was feeling really sad after losing my cat, I ended up watching some of their “food ranking” videos because that is the sort of mindless, easy content you can’t go wrong with when you want videos for distraction or company but not to have to think about anything.  Munch Madness, which candy is the best / worst, that sort of thing.
And eventually I became interested in them enough to watch other content and sort of get acquainted with the Lore and more of the back story, and now I think they’re interesting people.  Sometimes I can even watch some of the gross-out content if it’s not too extreme.
I still definitely identify with Link more than Rhett.  I’m grateful for the distraction during a difficult time in my life.  And I like seeing the nuances beneath the over the top click bait stuff.  I’m definitely not going to be the sort of fan who gets annoyed with them for too much food content, though.  Food content can be very comforting when it’s not just gross stuff.
