I have a MonsterKind theory!

okay so! I don’t know if anybody else has come to this same conclusion or if it was obvious to everybody but me, but...

I think Roy was created to be a friend for Molly. 

We see in the current arc that Molly and her father look remarkably similar, so it would stand to reason that she also inherited her father’s powers. I think both of them have the ability to bring things to life- specifically dolls. Early in the comic we see Molly with a bunch of tiny cyclops monsters in her room, and she’s sewing together what looks like a plush version of the same type of creature. 

I don’t think she adopted or found those monsters- I think she created them, by sewing together a collection of dolls and bringing them to life. (Side note: look at their coloring. She’s well on her way to making an entire rainbow of cyclopses. Maybe a coincidence, but also possible foreshadowing?) 

I think THIS is what her father’s talking about when she mentions using her powers to help Molly- he sees that his daughter is lonely and wants to create a friend for her. That being said, there might be ethical or legal implications involved in bringing dolls to life all willy-nilly, which would explain why her father’s against the idea.

Despite all this, I think Molly’s dad created Roy to act as a companion for his daughter. It would make sense that Roy would be as friendly and colorful and sweet as could be, because that’s what he was MADE for. Not only could he be a friend to Molly, but his presence might convince other kids to make friends with her as well. This would also explain why Roy’s so good with little kids and why he’d get a job teaching them- he was literally BUILT to appeal to children. 

It would also make sense of some of Roy’s slip-ups with Molly- he mentions what sound like shared childhood memories, like watching cartoons together and being read bedtime stories by her father. It could be explained away with sleepovers, sure, but it would make the most sense if Roy was living with Molly’s family when she was a child.

It would also explain why he was so desperately searching for Molly when they got separated, and why he’s so devastated by her loss of memory. Being Molly’s friend is his entire reason for being. He probably didn’t know what to do with himself without her.

Last thing- but it also explains why Roy’s such an unusual monster. We don’t see any other monsters (to my knowledge) that look like they’re made with inorganic parts or seem to be cobbled together like Roy is. We’ve seen in a few interactions (and bonus panels) that Roy is unusual even by monsters’ standards, and that would make perfect sense if he’s not really a “monster” at all.

Edit: I have no idea why I didn’t catch that Molly has two dads?? I literally didn’t even question it when I originally wrote all this about Molly’s mother. I have no excuse except for the fact that heteronormativity is a hell of a drug. From the bottom of my heart I will say: My bad.

I had a LOT of fun watching the art livestream by @enenkaydoodles for the Monsterkind Kickstarter! This may seem like it has nothing to do with Monsterkind, but the streamers bought pizza at the end and named it “Brian” (Papa Johns gives you the option to “name your pizza”) and for who knows what reason, inspired me to make this?? I don’t know either.
